I think many people in our modern society struggle with self-control (I know I do). There are so many temptations staring us in the face each day. We are always on the search for the next best thing that will make us feel better about ourselves or enhance our lives in some way.

Self-discipline is the act of controlling our emotions, actions, thoughts, words and personal direction. Some people seem to be naturally self-controlled and some seem to have no self-control at all. Others seem to constantly struggle with self-discipline.

Parents who use punishment are missing important opportunities to teach their children better behaviors and help them self-discipline. Now it occurs to me that I generally motivate myself to quit in the following manner:
(i) Make a demand to myself to quit.
(ii) Fail to quit.
(iii) Punish myself for continuing to smoke by nagging myself about it (I call it “worry”).
(iv) Make an offer to myself – I will stop the nagging, but only as a reward for quitting smoking.
(v) Fail to quit again.
(vi) Go back to Step (i) and repeat….
