Two years ago, the Federal portion alone was 24.4 cents per gallon and the States averaged averaged about 21.8 cents per gallon. And some States and counties and cities, etc charge additional taxes. The retail price is also affected by local market conditions and factors such as the location and the marketing strategy of the service station owner. Some stations are property of refiners, while others are independent businesses that purchase diesel fuel and sell at retail to the public.

Considering, though, that the American economy is in a deflation right now, the current soaring price of oil is not the result of inflation either, at least not in America.
