Die Geschichte handelt von Silvia, einem Mädchen aus einer adligen Familie, die von ihrem Vater Orgon an Dorante verheiratet werden soll. Doch Silivia ist skeptisch der Ehe gegenüber und wehrt sich gegen die Entscheidung des Vaters. Sie bittet also ihren Vater, Dorante zuvor unerkannt prüfen zu dürfen Ihr Plan ist es sich als die Zofe Lisette auszugeben und in ihre Rolle einzuschlüpfen. Diese merkwürdige Idee seiner Tochter amüsiert Orgon. Er gewährt Silvia ihren Plan durchzuführen. Doch was Silvia nicht weiß, ist das ihr Versprochene Dorante die gleiche Idee hatte.
