The Salmon Dilemma, Red Or White Wine? Posted By: John V

You've picked the perfect salmon dish for dinner, and now it's time to choose the perfect wine. While common convention may have you turning to the whites, the truth is reds and roses may work just as well, if not better! Matching food to wine is something of an art; however, even a novice can follow a few guidelines that will definitely improve their ability to appropriately pair a wine with a meal. The common rule is to use a milder white with a delicate or mildly flavored meat like fish, while reds will take over that kind of meal and are better with stronger dishes because they can easily stand up to bolder flavors. However, salmon falls out of the typical "white fish" category and therefore can be paired with a wide range of wines.

Salmon is an extremely versatile fish, which makes it an exceptionally accommodating wine companion. Depending on its preparation, salmon can be paired with a variety of wines, including champagne, chardonnay, and pinot noir. Unlike most foods, salmon can be matched to wine by texture as well as by its saucing.wine wines

A Wine Lover's Weekly Guide To $10 Wines - A Pinot Grigio From Hungary Posted By: Levi Reiss

Today's wine is an interesting combination, a Hungarian Pinot Grigio. It's named for Baron Lazare de Schwendi who according to legend brought Tokay vines from Hungary into Alsace back in 1565. Just so you don't make a mistake, these are not the vines that produce Hungary's sometimes world-class sweet Tokaji wine. I don't recall ever tasting a Hungarian Pinot Grigio. I do recall tasting a Hungarian Tokaji that I preferred to a French Sauternes, but that's another story. This wine was produced in the Pozmand region of Etyek, Hungary's youngest viticultural area in the eastern part of the country. The locals claim that it has stunning landscape, and is known for excellent wines including sparkling wines. You might want to check out the local Cellar Festival in mid-May. Today's companion wine comes from Austria's signature grape, Gruener Veltliner in a moderate price range.

A Wine Lovers Near Weekly Guide To $15 Wines - An Organic Marselan From Southern France Posted By: Levi Reiss

Today's wine comes from Languedoc in the heart of Provence, France. It is organic and suitable for vegetarians. It comes from a grape that most people have never tasted, Marselan, which is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Maybe because the vines weren't heavy croppers, this grape essentially went nowhere for decades. The first non-blended Marselan was released in 2002. But now it has started to become popular, both in Languedoc and in California; Sunridge Nurseries of Bakersfield has been selling it to growers who want to supply winemakers with unknown varieties. For about three years it has been legal to import wines with Marselan on the label into the United States. Today's winemaker is the top organic winemaker in France. Maybe he knows something. The companion wine is also a blend. It's an upscale Chateauneuf-du-Pape at almost five times the price.

A Wine Lovers Weekly Guide To $10 Wines - A White Viura From Northern Spain Posted By: Levi Reiss

Today's wine comes from Carinena in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain. Carrying the DO appellation; it is the first wine to be so honored in Aragon. The region's wine history dates back some 2300 years. In those days people often mixed their wine with honey. Unlike most of our reviewed wines, this one comes from a wine cooperative. The coop, Bodegas San Valero, was founded in 1945 uniting 60 growers. They are now up to about 700. The Viura grape, called Macabeo in France, is the most popular grape in northern Spain. It is found in Cava, a popular Spanish sparking wine. Traditionally this is not a prestigious grape but I just came across a review entitled Macabeo/Viura - the Cinderella Grape? from Jancis Robinson, one of the world's leading wine reviewers. Exceptionally there will be no $10 review next week. It's not a question of taking time off, I'll be doing an upscale wine review and the companion wine came in at about $12. On the subject of upscale wines, I found an 1989 Viura/Malvasia (also not a prestigious grape) marked down to about $55. I won't be tasting that wine unless the markdown process goes viral.wine bargain wine food pairing tasting red wine white wine buy wine cheap wine review wineries

A Wine Lover's Weekly Review Of $10 Wines - An Italian Vino Novello Dated 2011 Posted By: Levi Reiss

It is new wine time. This Italian Vino Novello was grapes on the vine only a few short weeks ago. You may remember when new wines, especially Beaujolais Nouveau, were a hot, hot marketing phenomenon. Times have changed. This year I had to keep my eyes really open to find the display in my wine store. Have consumers finally caught on? Cantina Tollo was founded in 1960. They do about a dozen reds, about a dozen whites, several ros AND eacute;s, and a dessert wine. In 2010 The German international wine academy MUNDUSVini designated them the Best Wine Producer in Europe. Cantina is located in the small Abruzzi town of Tollo on the Adriatic Sea. Check out their web site for local sites to see including an ancient convent, a spa, and a nature reserve. Interestingly enough, their web site did not reference this particular wine. The companion wine is a Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau from Georges Duboeuf, the king of Beaujolais.

It is new wine time. This Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau was hanging on the vine a few short weeks ago. Many of us still remember when new wines, especially Beaujolais Nouveau, were a hot, hot marketing phenomenon. How times have changed. At least in our bailiwick you must keep your eyes really open to find them displayed this year. Have consumers finally wised up? Georges DuBoeuf is known as the roi (king) or even pape (pope) of Beaujolais and is the person most responsible for this phenomenon. They used to deliver BN to New York via the Concorde. Not any more; and not only because there are no more Concordes. Let's not exaggerate, there are still a lot of New Wine parties and Beaujolais Nouveau is often the star, especially when it carries the higher class Beaujolais-Villages designation. You might want to check out the company web site and visit their wine theme park. The companion wine is an Italian Vino Novello costing a lot less.

A Wine Lover's Weekly Review Of $10 Wines - A Low-alcohol Rosefrom South Austalia Posted By: Levi Reiss

Once again we are in Australia this time tasting a wine whose alcohol content is less than half the "normal" level. Low alcohol wines meet many people's needs. Interestingly enough the label says "Wine Product of Australia" rather than the more usual "Wine of Australia." Can we say it's a wine product similar to a cheese product, in other words winey or cheesy? Something else to consider, its distributor Constellation Wines is largest wine group in the world. Constellation has been associated with Wild Irish Rose, Italian Swiss Colony, and Manischewitz wines, none of which I will recommend. On the other hand, it is also associated with Robert Mondavi and Kim Crawford wines, both of whom have produced many fine wines.

Banrock Station offers a wine and wetland center and a restaurant with a conference center. It is located about 120 miles (200 kilometers) north east of Adelaide in South Australia, the most productive of Australia's wine regions. The company has made a major effort to reduce water usage. Today's companion wine is a Pinot Noir rose from the neighboring region of Victoria, Australia with well over twice the alcohol content.wine bargain wine food pairing tasting red wine white wine buy wine cheap wine review wineries

A Wine Lover's Weekly Guide To $10 Wines - A Penfold's Chardonnay From Australia Posted By: Levi Reiss

We have been doing a lot of Australian wines recently. Today's offering comes from yet another huge Australian wine company founded by a young British doctor over 150 years ago. Dr. Penfold's started by planting vine cuttings from the south of France at a modest stone cottage on the outskirts of Adelaide in South Australia. The cottage was called The Grange. Penfolds Grange wine is anything but modest; it is considered Australia's finest wine. At well over $500 a bottle I won't be reviewing it here or in my upscale wine column. Penfolds has been making this particular South Australian Chardonnay since 1976. Today's companion wine is a Chardonnay from one of the finest wine areas of Australia.

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed Penfolds Koonunga Hill Chardonnay 2007 13.5% alcohol about $10

Let's start by quoting the marketing materials. Tasting Note: Pale lemon gold color; tropical fruit, spicy oak and vanilla aromas; mouth filling flavor, long crisp spicy finish. Serving Suggestion: Ham with a honey mustard glaze; chicken dishes. And now for my review.

A Wine Lover's Near Weekly Review Of $15 Wines - A South Australia Verdelho Posted By: Levi Reiss

Our stock of Australian wine is slowly but surely getting lower. Along the way there have been both positive and negative surprises. Today's wine comes from a major Australian winery that was founded by a medical doctor well over 150 years ago. As you will read below, the (white) Verdelho grape was originally Portuguese. You might want to visit the producer's website for lots of detailed information on their wines. However, because I bought this wine about three years ago the site does not provide information on this specific wine and vintage. Hunter Valley is north of Sydney in southwestern Australia. Despite its fertile soil, hot climate, and high yields its wines are often quite good. Today's companion wine is a South African Chenin Blanc priced at about $10.

A Wine Lover's Weekly Review Of $10 Wines - A South African Chenin Blanc Posted By: Levi Reiss

We have had a lot of luck with South African wines in both our bargain reviews and our other reviews. I cannot remember the last time I tried a Chenin Blanc, so maybe that in itself is a comment on this often far from remarkable grape. Don't get me wrong; there are some great Chenin Blanc wines on the market, but few, if any, will be found in this price range. My supplier presently stocks 6 bottles of a Loire Valley (France) Clos de la Coulee de Serrant Savennieres 1995 produced by arguably the world's best biodynamic winemaker, Nicolas Joly. But at about $225 a bottle you won't see it reviewed here or in my organic wine column.

Today's wine comes from mostly old bush vines in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch, not far from Capetown. These hand-picked grapes were grown in mineral soil in vineyards facing the ocean where the days are hot and sunny and the evenings are really cool. The 2006 version of this wine was ranked 6th in the international top 100 BEST BUYS in the American publication, The Wine Enthusiast. But now we are talking about a 2008.wine bargain wine food pairing tasting red wine white wine buy wine cheap wine review wineries

A Wine Lover's Near Weekly Guide To $15 Wines - A Southern Italian Primitivo Posted By: Levi Reiss

Apulia, also called Puglia, situated on the Adriatic coast of southern Italy produces a huge quantity of wine. Along with Sicily and Veneto it contends for the dubious title of Italy's top wine producer, volume wise. This is an up and coming region, quality wise. While the region is flat, its soil tends to be good for winemaking. This particular wine comes from the region's center, not far south from Bari, the regional capital. It is named for a lovely small town whose name translates to Jewels of the Neck. There you will find a Thirteenth Century castle, lots of private label Primitivo wines, great mozzarella cheese, and local pasta known as orechiette (little ears). The manhole covers come from the days of BM, Benito Mussolini, but you won't see me trying to sneak any home. The winery's main building is over 100 years old but it is equipped with up to date machinery and is certified ISO. The Gioia del Colle DOC designation also includes a few sweet red wines that just may end up in my baggage after my next visit.wine bargain wine food pairing tasting red wine white wine buy wine moderate-priced wine review wineries

A Wine Lover's Weekly Guide To $10 Wines - An Old Vines Zinfandel From California Posted By: Levi Reiss

Of course, we have been reviewing a lot of California wine, and a lot of Zinfandels, even white Zinfandels. Today's wine is as red as can be. It comes from the Lodi area, home to over 40% of California Zinfandel. This is Northern California, south of Sacremento and east of San Francisco, in the heart of Gold Rush country. John Kautz started with 12 acres (less than 5 hectares) and now has over 5 thousand acres (over 2 thousand hectares) in the Lodi area and the Sierra foothills. Ironstone is home to California's largest winery entertainment complex including a museum and a culinary center. You can even pan for gold. Their wine aging caverns were blasted through limestone. While this is not an organic wine, Ironstone practices sustainable viticulture, including owl boxes, raptor perches, and drip irrigation. This wine actually contains 9% Petite Syrah. Today's companion wine is a medium priced Primitivo from southern Italy. Zinfandel is America's only native European grape variety and some experts, but not all, consider it to be a relative of Primitivo.

A Wine Lover's Weekly Review Of $15 Wines - A Canadian Gewurztraminer Posted By: Levi Reiss

We haven't been reviewing too many Canadian wines. Maybe we should. Over three decades ago the Pennachetti family helped to pioneer noble grape varietal wines in the Niagara Peninsula with Riesling and Chardonnay. The hillside of the Niagara Escarpment overlooking Lake Ontario is known as Beamsville Bench. In this fine location a single bloc of 25-year old vines grew the Gewurztraminer grapes that were fermented in stainless steel. This is a popular tourist area; the winery also offers an inn, a restaurant, and a spa with vinotherapy treatments. What more could you possibly want? Today's companion wine is a $10 Georgian wine grown from the most popular local grape, the white Rkatsiteli.

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed Cave Spring Estate Bottled Gewuerztraminer VQA 2008 14.0% alcohol about $15

Let's start by quoting the marketing materials. Tasting Note: Medium gold. Intense aromas of lychee, white flowers, candied citrus, and exotic spices. Just off-dry, medium bodied with an emerging lime cordial note on the palate. Very well-made Ontario Gew AND uuml;rz. Pair it with grilled prawns in a moderately spicy sauce, or lemon grass chicken.wine bargain wine food pairing tasting red wine white wine buy wine moderate-priced wine review wineries

A Wine Lover's Weekly Guide To $10 Wines - A Classical White From Georgia Posted By: Levi Reiss

If memory serves me correctly, this is our first Georgian wine. Teliani Valley winemakers was established in 1997. At least one of the buildings dates back an additional century and was built for a prince by decree of a Romanov. Talking about history, archeologists have found clay vessels dating back some five thousand years that contain Rkatsiteli grapes, the ones that form this wine. Even if you or I have never heard of these grapes, in the days of the Soviet Union they may have been the most widely planted white grape. These grapes are also found in the United States, in particular in the Finger Lakes district of New York State. This particular wine comes from the Kakheti region of southeast Georgia. Kakheti is Georgia's major wine growing area; it is divided into about 25 microregions. Rkatsiteli grapes are often used for making sweet wine. Today's companion wine is a moderately priced Gewurztraminer from a choice region of the Niagara Valley in Ontario, Canada.

A Wine Lover's Weekly Guide To $10 Wine - A Kosher Semi-sweet Cabernet Sauvignon Posted By: Levi Reiss

We've already reviewed several wines from the Baron Herzog (kosher) winery. And it goes without saying that we have reviewed lots and lots of Cabernet Sauvignons, both kosher and non-kosher. But this is our first semi-dry or should we say semi-sweet Cabernet Sauvignon that we have ever reviewed, or as far as I can remember, even tasted.

Jeunesse is French for youth; as the label says it's French for youthful, flavorful, and fun. This wine was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks. No oak. The label recommends enjoying this wine slightly chilled. The website recommends not cellaring it. The companion wine is an Israeli Cabernet Sauvignon at twice the price.

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed Baron Herzog Jeunesse 2008 12.0% alcohol about $10

Let's start by quoting the marketing materials. Description: A vibrant purple color leads to a pretty nose of plum, prune, spice cake and black cherry. Dry, round and ripe, this ready-to-drink number is an ideal candidate for many of the meats and vegetables off the barbecue. And now for my review.

The label said semi-dry.wine bargain wine food pairing tasting red wine white wine buy wine cheap wine review wineries
