What Is Combatives: Part 1 Posted By: Matthew McKernan

What is Combatives? A Brief Study of Hand to Hand Combat, Self Defense, Mixed Martial Arts and Beyond

The root word COMBAT - "to fight in direct contact," "active fighting between enemies," "any fight or struggle".

There are no specific country origins or techniques to define Close Combat, Self Defense, and Hand to Hand maneuvers. Based on historical fact and my 30 plus years experience in training, teaching, and understanding self defense, I present the following.

"The Roots of Close Combat, Self Defense, and Mixed Martial Arts"

There are comprehensive surveys and presentations of armed and unarmed combat. You will find a vast array of skills that deploy a diverse mix of "techniques." One truth remains; where people exist, there is a need for defense against aggression. Every culture has its own form of close combat, both traditional and unconventional, yet all have striking similarities.

In Ancient Greece, Pankration was a combined system of "all powers" combat, the equivalent of what is globally known today as Mixed Martial Arts.

The Samurai original fighting systems, Koryu Bujutsu, included a comprehensive catalog of both armed and unarmed skills.martial arts self defense

Tai Chi Chuan: Notes On The Classical V The New Age Posted By: Al Case

Saw Tai Chi Chuan on the youtube, and it was quite fascinating. Young chinese lass performed a Tai Chi New modern version, and my mind began to inspect the intricate movements, the rights and wrongs. Of course, one could claim that there is no right and wrong, there is only interpretation.

But, in this ancient Art of Tai Chi Chuan, should there be interpretation? The young lady flowed like a skyrocket in molasses, giving off chi energy, wielding chi power, and was as gorgeous as a constellation in the early evening. But...function should define the art, am I not correct?

The classical Tai Chi was low, powerful, thrusting poppings of power that would slay a phoenix or three. Her modern Tai Chi Chi was low and graceful, and there were circles in her motions, but the arms were not set in the unbendable sphere. They were bendable and amazing to perceive...and useless in a fight.

Standing on one leg and presenting the Open Kick posture...but borrowing from Shaolin, or perhaps even Taekwondo for the stretch and the flair and the indelible impression on the mind.tai chi chuan power tai chi chuan chi power chi power

Karate Kiai And The Secret Of Kotodama Posted By: Al Case

Karate Kiai translates as 'spirit shout,' and it is the deadly scream that karate practitioners emit when chopping somebody's head off. Well, maybe I stated that a little strongly, grin, but there is a truth to the karate shout that is undeniable and leads to some rather arcane and mysterious knowledge. I am speaking, of course, of the practice of Kotodama, which translates as 'Word spirit.'

The notion behind a Karate kiai is to commit all of ones energies into one moment, one karate technique, and thus to enhance the power of the strike. The idea of scaring a somebody is somewhat secondary, but not to be discounted. Both of these concepts lead to rather interesting belief systems and mysterious realities.

Kotodama is the practice of creating soothing sounds, which sounds can engender a more spiritual feeling in a person. There is, of course, the flip side, the bad word phenomena, in which a sound is used to hurt another person. Either way, kotodama results in the practice of kotomuke (soothing speech to bring peace), and kotoage, which is producing magic.karate kung fu shaolin kenpo taekwondo savate

Jeet Kune Do -the Martial Art Invented By Bruce Lee Posted By: mica6d4opa

Bruce Lee is extremely famous for his awesome Kung Fu flicks but not a lot of people know that he developed his own martial art style referred to as Jeet Kune Do. Jeet Kune Do is being taught internationally and it's really based on older martial art forms with new techniques and strategies. In this article, we will be looking at what Jeet Kune Do is all about and how it is different from other martial arts.

Even though Bruce Lee is mainly known as an actor, he was also an authentic martial artist. He was a student of a lot of traditional fighting styles, especially Wing Chun Kung Fu. He invented Jeet Kune Do, or JKD, by incorporating the most effective elements of these other arts to develop a modern and diverse fighting system. Bruce Lee wanted to have a martial art style that was effective but could be customized to fit the needs of the individual. Jeet Kune Do has had an influence on modern day fighting styles as well as Western boxing and fencing. Lee's real goal with JKD was for anyone who studies it to have their own personal interpretation of it.martial arts

Jeet Kune Do: The Martial Art Style Of Bruce Lee Posted By: lano6e93ha

While everybody knows Bruce Lee as a fantastic Kung Fu actor, he also developed his own style of martial art named Jeet Kune Do. This martial art style is now taught worldwide, and has elements from older martial arts with several new techniques and strategies. This article will focus on what Jeet Kune Do is about and what makes it different compared to other forms of martial arts.

Bruce Lee was an accomplished martial artist before he become known as an actor. He was a student of several standard fighting styles, especially Wing Chun Kung Fu. Jeet Kune Do or JKD, is a mix of all highly effective elements in the fighting methods Bruce Lee mastered. Bruce Lee wanted to have a martial art that was effective but could be personalized to fit the needs of the individual. The influence of Jeet Kune Do can be easily seen in martial arts nowadays and also fencing and Western boxing. Bruce Lee's whole objective was to develop a martial art form that any person could learn and develop their own personal style.martial arts fitness

Three Things One Must Know When Doing Real Shaolin Kung Fu Training Posted By: Al Case

The wins students get from true Shaolin Kung Fu training are absolutely unbelievable. The key to these wins is to train correctly. After all, you could have the nicest cut of ribs in the world, but cook it incorrectly and you'll have a charcoal mess.

When one is studying Kung Fu one should always move the body as a single unit. Six Harmonies Boxing preaches that one should move the hand at the same time as the foot, the knee with the elbow, and the hips with the shoulders. This is a technical viewpoint, which tends to separate body parts even as it unifies them.

As for the hands and feet, one should step or twist into a stance in conjunction with the starting and stopping of the hand movement. For the knees and elbows, one should properly align the body when doing any movement. For the hips and shoulders, move them together and you will be putting all your body weight into whatever motion you are doing.

The second of the three secrets of Shaolin Kung Fu training is to use the waist when turning the body.shaolin kung fu kenpo karate aikido taekwondo

Shaolin Kung Fu: The Chinese Martial Arts Worth Practicing Posted By: Pranav Mehta

In fact Shaolin Kung Fu is a group of Chinese Martial Arts that have a connection to the Shaolin Monastery which was the place where these martial arts were developed and spread across China and further into the world.
It is believed that the Buddhist Monks from India travelled to China to translate the Buddhist Scriptures from Sanskrit to Mandarin and it was they who carried the original manuscripts that described martial arts that came to be known later as Shaolin Kung Fu.
Unfortunately, the Shaolin Temple was destroyed many a times in its long history and during the Cultural Revolution and Communist rule where anything religious was destroyed, the Shaolin Monastery bore the wrath of many and was burnt and pillaged. Yet, somehow we can see that the few monks who managed to escape have been able to save this deep-rooted, discipline from being completely obliterated and spread it across China and to the western world.

Thus, what started in India has come back to India as Shaolin India.
Karate Kumite...getting Emotional And Mad Dog Survival Posted By: Al Case

Karate Kumite and Clint Eastwood, I never thought those two things would come together in a single paragraph. In the old western 'The Outlaw Josie Wales,' Mr. Eastwood talks to some some soft pioneers about how to get mad dog mean when you're in a fight to the finish. There is truth to be found in this advice, but if you are training in classical martial arts training, there is also a falsehood.

The truth is that you have to raise up your desire to survive. You have to be willing to do more than you have ever done before. You have to be willing to fight harder and never give up.

The lie is that emotion increases your desire to win. To understand this, and other things concerning emotion and the martial arts, we have to define what, exactly, emotion is. The odd thing is that if you look in a dictionary you will not find a good definition.

Emotion isn't 'mood,' or an 'instinctive state of mind,' except in the vaguest of terms. When somebody is unable to accept reality he/she creates a mental turmoil that is labeled emotion.karate kung fu shaolin keenpo taekwondo savate

Karate Chop Is Not The Deadliest Weapon In The Martial Arts Posted By: Al Case

Karate chop him, yelled the girl, and I laughed. This was a movie where neither the actor, the writer, the director, not nobody, knew the martial arts. See, people used to think that a karate chop to the neck would kill people outright, of course, this was a while ago.

When I first began studying the art of Chinese Kenpo Karate I was told that a spear hand strike to the solar plexus or the neck was the deadliest martial arts attack one could deliver. Just stick those steel hard fingers in the soft areas and watch your opponent die. A spear hand was supposed to be better than a karate chop, but only by a little.

Then I heard about the Dim Muk, or what is commonly called The Death Touch. You touch a person on a special spot somewhere on their body and they drop dead. Of course, it would take twenty years to master the Chi Power, learn all the pressure points and times they were vulnerable, and by that time I'd be ancient and too slow to do such a thing.karate kung fu shaolin keenpo taekwondo savate

If you are a fan of authentic Chinese culture than you can immerse yourselves in tribal folklore in Yunnan, where you can interact with ethnic minorities and learn more about their unique lifestyle and practices.xian terracotta warriors safari tours africa shanghai tour

It's About Kicking Ass Posted By: Matthew McKernan

When you get down to it, there is only one real reason anyone gets into martial arts, to know how to kick someone's ass. Yep, I said it and I'll say it again, I don't care if you're a Shaolin Monk or Thelonious Monk, you got into martial arts because you wanted to know how to kick someone's ass. It's like the only real reason to go to a dance club is to hook up (don't trust anyone, gay or straight who says it's to dance, or the music). There's a reason why you stop going when you're attached, it's because you don't have to.

I know you probably give explanations for choosing your martial arts path to friends and family. I'm sure the reasons range from fitness to spiritual. Unfortunately that reasoning is pure and complete bullshit since there are dozens of other hobbies from yoga to triathlons, that will give you either or both of those benefits. Side note: Anyone uses the term "path" or "spiritual" in a sentence needs a swift boot to nuts.

The only reason ANYONE EVER signs up for a martial arts class is learn how to fight. Think about it, why "martial arts"?martial arts self defense

Bubishi Martial Arts Book Is Number One Bible Of Karate Posted By: Al Case

The Bubishi, the one having to do with White Crane and Monk's fist Boxing, was compiled sometime over the last few hundred years in Fuzhou Province. Fuzhou is where Shaolin Kung Fu was practiced, and which kung fu became the inspiration for Naha-te, which became Karate. There is no doubt that it is one of the most influential martial arts books in history, and probably the bible of All Karate.

The Bubishi is actually a lengthy work of art, jam packed with poems, anatomical drawings, and so on. In writing this article I decided to concentrate on the eight phrases which were pivotal to the inspiration of such arts as Goju Ryu Karate and Uechi Ryu Karate. The meaning of these phrases, which are named Kempo Hakku (Eight Rules of the Fist), can be found by examining them through the Science of Matrixing

The beginning phrase is, 'the mind exists as one with heaven and earth.' This is a realization that the universe is dichotomous, that there is the realm of the spirit and there is the realm of material universe.bubishi karate bible kung fu bible shaolin monks fist

Old Man Knocked Down For The Count...is It Time To Study Kung Fu? Posted By: Al Case

You're going to realize it is time to Study Kung Fu when you see this video. It takes place on a Chicago subway, some old guy is walking along begging for change, and he runs into the wrong people. To see the video simply google 'Elderly Man Attacked on CTA Platform (Chicago).'

Now, time for some serious thought about what just happened. You see somebody old and helpless, almost dazed, definitely doesn't have a clue, get the sense knocked out of him. So what is it about him that drives a bunch of young criminals to violence?

He isn't a threat, not any way you look at him. He's not threatening people, doesn't really look like he knows what he is doing. So there is no reason for his mugging, and let's consider the young punk who did the deed to him.

The guy is young and full of himself, probably doesn't work for a living, and doesn't look like he wants to. He's got his circle of friends, all as full of themselves and as criminal as him, and they are cheering him on. So here's the question: is this what is happening to America?study kung fu kung fu class shaolin class kenpo class karate
