Get Close To Nature At Udawalawe National Park Posted By: Pushpitha Wijesinghe

Udawalawe National Park is considered to be the third most visited national park in Sri Lanka and it is located between the Uva and Sabaragamuwa Districts of the country and thus can be found more towards the Southern part of the island. It is a popular tourist destination and is visited not only by foreigners but also by a large number of local wildlife and nature enthusiasts.

The reserve was established in 1972 as a sanctuary for wild animals, who were displaced during the building of the Udawalawe reservoir. Over the years the farmers cultivating in the area have been gradually removed and provided with alternative areas for farming.

The national park is perhaps the most popular spot in the country to go elephant watching as there are a large number of pachyderms who have made this place their home. For wildlife enthusiasts, it is a perfect place to go watching not just for elephants but also a wide range of birds such as cormorants, painted storks, Sri Lankan hornbills, Sri Lanka jungle fowls, red faced malkohas and a variety of species that are both endemic and migrant.udawalawe national park sri lanka elephant safaris

The Link Between Humidity And Dehydration In Reptiles Posted By: gregory m Russell

Lets look at this from outside the box, forget about everything you have read before, written by heaven knows who and passed on just because they read it. I always find my answers by looking and observing nature. Give your input. What does dehydration mean? Up to 75% of the body's weight is made up of water (I am not sure of the percentage with reptiles). Most of the water is found within the cells of the body (intracellular space). The rest is found in the extracellular space, which consists of the blood vessels (intravascular space) and the spaces between cells (interstitial space).Dehydration occurs when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken in. Dehydration is not a disease but a condition characterized by the body's depletion of fluid (water). Dehydration may also be accompanied by salt (sodium, chloride), or another electrolyte imbalance in the body. How much water do our reptiles really loose per day? This is something that most people do not know because their reptile defecates either in water or on something that absorbs the water.
Photo illustration That is a LOT of water, ask me who cleans it everyday.dehydration reptiles humidity for reptiles

Mother Nature has bestowed upon us lush landscape, endless water bodies and a magnificent variety of flora and fauna. It is impossible to imagine a world without such wonderful endowments. To keep the natural cycle going, it is extremely essential to conserve the priceless elements of Planet Earth. However, it is disheartening and disappointing to see the beautiful animal species being endangered and threatened to life. We are losing the most beautiful creation of God only because of human carelessness and their irresponsible behavior. Animals are becoming extinct and vanishing away, the reason for which is loss of appropriate habitat, human interference, pollution and many such more causes. Wildlife conservation has become a critical issue of national importance.

Thankfully, the governments and national authorities have now become sensitive about this issue and many positive steps are being taken to protect and conserve the beautiful fauna of the world. The wildlife comprises of all those non-cultivated and non-domesticated animals that live in their natural habitat. Mammals, birds and reptiles all come under the category of wildlife.
