What Is Combatives: Part 1 Posted By: Matthew McKernan

What is Combatives? A Brief Study of Hand to Hand Combat, Self Defense, Mixed Martial Arts and Beyond

The root word COMBAT - "to fight in direct contact," "active fighting between enemies," "any fight or struggle".

There are no specific country origins or techniques to define Close Combat, Self Defense, and Hand to Hand maneuvers. Based on historical fact and my 30 plus years experience in training, teaching, and understanding self defense, I present the following.

"The Roots of Close Combat, Self Defense, and Mixed Martial Arts"

There are comprehensive surveys and presentations of armed and unarmed combat. You will find a vast array of skills that deploy a diverse mix of "techniques." One truth remains; where people exist, there is a need for defense against aggression. Every culture has its own form of close combat, both traditional and unconventional, yet all have striking similarities.

In Ancient Greece, Pankration was a combined system of "all powers" combat, the equivalent of what is globally known today as Mixed Martial Arts.

The Samurai original fighting systems, Koryu Bujutsu, included a comprehensive catalog of both armed and unarmed skills.martial arts self defense

What Is Combatives: Part 2 Posted By: Matthew McKernan

The Battle of Britain began in early July, 1940. England was isolated in a war against the axis of evil. The miracle retreat from Dunkirk and the German "Blitzkrieg" across Europe, including the crushing tactical defeat of the famed French "Maginot Line" proved the Third Reich war machine to be virtually unstoppable. Hitler's plan for the invasion of England, named "Operation Sea Lion" was a daily focal point of danger and concern for the British.

Dunkirk had decimated the British forces and moral was at an all time low. Two recently returned veterans of British colonial rule in Shanghai, China approached the War Office and offered their services at this desperate time. William Ewart Fairbairn, retired as a ranking officer of the Shanghai Municipal Police and his partner Eric Anthony Sykes, a private arms dealer who served as a volunteer in the Shanghai Municipal Police and headed the sniper unit of the famed Shanghai Riot Squad, promised the War Office that their training and methods could in short order, make "any one man the equal of ten."

After the debacle at Dunkirk this was a most important and dramatic statement.martial arts self defense

Does Your Martial Art Have Street Value? Posted By: Matthew McKernan

Watching martial artists perform acrobatic and complex techniques is awe inspiring. When I was a child I wanted to be Bruce Lee or any other number of actors on Saturday afternoon "Kung Fu Theater". These movies made the idea of mastering my body, spinning, jumping and defying the laws of gravity seemed possible. In the mid 1980's I would start my Asian martial arts career with Tae Kwon Do. I would spend hours on end practicing jump spinning kicks, split kicks and back kicks. A few years later we all caught the joint locking craze thanks to Steve Seagal. We would train in Aiki-jujutsu techniques until my wrists and grip would get so sore that I could barely hold the steering wheel on the ride home. Later, I would be fortunate enough to discover the truth about defensive tactics. Those techniques and principles would evolve into the Self Defense Training System twenty years later.

Like most people, my early training and perceptions of the martial arts consisted of sport and Hollywood martial arts. All of those methods appeared to work when everyone involved was on the same page.self protection best self defense

Are You Being Ridiculous? Posted By: Matthew McKernan

People spend countless hours training for scenarios that will never, or could ever happen. Yet masters all over the globe teach them without any thought to what they are actually to the content or context of the attack itself. It's mindlessly regurgitated techniques in "because I said so" fashion. Well it's time to seriously take a look at what you are doing and ask your self "Am I being ridiculous?"

There are three factors that make an attack ridiculous, the way it's practiced, the attack itself and the circumstances around the attack. The video gives an example of each of these with the wrist grab, the "stiff arm knife" and the POW execution.

The wrist grab is an ever popular attack and if you walk into any self defense seminar or martial arts school you will most likely be placed in this deadly hold.

Why do we practice it?

You practice this attack because like most other attacks, it's left over from Judo's Goshinjutsu. In the 1900's Judo developed a series of self defense techniques and called it Goshinjutsu. Yes JUDO (doesn't sound so sexy anymore does it?self protection best self defense

How To Choose A Martial Arts School!! - Phase - I Posted By: Jonathan Metcalf

As the chief instructor of Integrity Martial Arts, it is a bit awkward for me to be writing an article on how to choose the best school because, of course, I want you to come to my school. That is because I know my school has the most to offer; but how can you decide for yourself what the best martial arts school for your child is?

Who is karate for?

Martial arts are for anyone. There are martial arts students who are underweight and there are students who are overweight. Some martial artists are very athletic and some start out as real klutzes, some are flexible and some are not. I have seen good martial artists as young as 4 and as old as 82. Men and women, girls and boys all participate in martial arts classes around the world. While practically anyone can do it (consult your physician if you have medical concerns), not everyone can teach it.
Can my kid do it?

Research has shown that children derive tremendous benefits from doing karate such as: focus, self-esteem, discipline, increased responsibility and an ability to set and accomplish goals.Martial Arts for Kids Self Defense training classes

Jiu Jitsu For Self Defense Posted By: Aaron Landry

Jujutsu is a form of martial arts that originated in Japan by Samurai's in the seventeenth century. The literal meaning of jujutsu is way of yielding. This primarily concerns with disarming and disabling attackers that are armed or armored, without being armed (heavily at least) themselves. There are a few small weapons such as knifes, chains, certain helmets, and so on that are used in some cases, however this is not practiced as much. Because going against an armed or armored opponent can be an incredibly daunting task, jujutsu was formed. It is a combination of the most effective ways to disarm the attacker in the form of quick strikes, pins, joint locks, and throws. Many of these moves are counter attacks from the attacker. The theory behind this tactic is to use the oppositions energy against him in a quick and very effective counter. Many of these moves can disarm and disable the attacker in one move whether or not they are armed or not.

Jujutsu is considered to be a soft art as opposed to a hard one such as karate and taekwondo.how to fight jiu jitsu learn how to fight how to win a fight

What Is The Difference Of An Old Karate To A New Karate? Posted By: Daren

Ryukyu Kempo (also known as Chinese Kempo) has been the way of martial arts in Okinawa hundreds of years. This is what martial arts was before the transition into what most people know as 'modern karate'. Ryukyu Kempo is not a 'style' of martial arts like Goju-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu, Shuri-ryu, Tai Kwon Do and the list goes on. Rather, Ryukyu Kempo encompasses Okinawan arts with emphasis on life-protection techniques, regardless of an individual's size. The concepts of Ryukyu Kempo bridge the gap between styles and aid the student in defining his or her techniques, regardless of style.
Ryukyu Kempo incorporates many of the same concepts as 'Acupuncture' dealing with over 300 pressure points of the body, chi flow (also call Qi, Ki, or Bio-electric energy), yin AND yang (positive AND negative), the 12 bi-lateral body meridians, and the 5 elements (earth, wood, fire, metal, water).

Ryukyu Kempo consists of two areas that are not included in Modern Karate and most other modern Martial Arts:
Kyusho-Jitsu is the pressure point striking of Ryukyu Kempo. To perform a Kyusho-Jitsu technique, a student must be trained in striking a combination of points.RyuKyu Kempo Kenpo Karate Okinawan Karate Shotokan Karate

A Brief History Of Mixed Martial Arts Posted By: Daren

While Mixed Martial Arts gets a bad name, it is generally by people who do not understand the history of this sport. Mixed marital arts, or MMA, is something that has been around for a very long time, longer than most other sports, so here to help educate, is the mixed martial arts history.

In the 1880s, there was a no-holds-barred type of fighting that used various fighting styles including Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing and more. In 1887, the first match between a boxer and a wrestler took place when heavy weight champion John L. Sullivan went up against his trainer, losing within two minutes to the wrestler.
Mixed style matches between boxers and jujutsu fighters were very popular during the early 1900s in Europe and Japan. In 1936, Kingfish Levinsky, a heavyweight boxer, went up against wrestler Ray Steele. Steele won within 35 seconds.
After World War Two, this mixed style faded away until the early 1970s when Bruce Lee brought the concept of combining elements of multiple martial arts to the West.mixed martial arts Karate Classes Martial Arts School Kar

The Basics Of Judo Posted By: Alex Smith

The martial art style Judo can mean a lot of things to different people. In reality, it is a fun and exciting sport, an art, a discipline, an activity, a way to protect yourself, and quite simply a way of life. Although you may hear many different meanings, the word Judo actually means all of the above and several more.

Original founded back in 1882, Judo comes from the feudal Japan fighting system. Upon founding, Judo was a refinement of the martial art jujutsu. Jujutsu is one of the oldest martial arts styles, dating back hundreds of years.

Judo made the biggest impact in 1964 when it was first introduced into the Olympic Games. Now, it is practiced by millions of people all across the world. Judo can help students stay in shape, excel in all areas of competition, stay protected with self defense, and several other things. For a majority of students, Judo is practiced just for fun. Although it starts out as fun for many, it quickly turns into a way of life, a burning passion if you will.

Similar to other martial arts styles, Judo has rules that ensure the safety of those competing in the competitions.judo

Martial Arts Training Will Give Your Kids Self Confidence Posted By: Nick Messe

Enrolling a child in a martial arts program can provide numerous physical, emotional and mental development advantages that continue throughout adulthood. Trained instructors offer programs in disciplines that are designed to enhance self esteem, respect for others, and confidence in every situation.

The most obvious benefit of martial arts training is the ability to improve a child's self defense skills. Especially with children small for their age, martial arts training can provide a mechanism for improving self confidence and coping with recurring bullying.

The physical condition of the participant will also progress through training. General conditioning differs with each discipline, but cardiovascular fitness and muscle tone will improve as the workouts evolve. Martial arts training includes extensive calisthenics and strength control exercises that enhance balance and coordination.

The emotional development achieved through training is helpful to all children, but can be especially beneficial to those with anger or mood issues. Many martial arts instructors include mental and spiritual elements in their teaching to help identify the roots of anger and fear. Mastering these emotions will improve the quality of the decision making process.

Choosing the appropriate martial arts discipline involves identifying the overall objective for the child.Richmond VA Martial Arts Richmond VA Karate Richmond VA Ju Jitsu Hanover VA Martial Arts Hanover VA Karate Hanover VA Ju Jitsu
