Collectable Porcelain Figurines Posted By: Bobby Buys

The story of porcelain began in China around 100-200 BCE (hence the other name for porcelain, "china"). Porcelain figurines and the technology for making them reached Europe by the 17th century.

Early in the 18th century, August the Strong, Elector of Sachsen commissioned sculptors from Meissen (Germany), to make porcelain figurines for his palace. In the years that followed, production techniques rapidly improved; porcelain factories across Europe catered to the craze among the well-heeled for these expensive objets d'art. Porcelain factory towns like Dresden and S AND egrave;vres are famous even today. By the late 18th century, with thousands of factories engaged in the business, the middle classes could afford figurines as well; artistic standards however, had declined. Fake figurines, typically in Baroque and Rococo styles flooded the market, falsely marked with the names of old, prestigious manufacturers.

In the 20th century, mass production fuelled an explosive growth in figurines for home decor and as collectables. High quality figurines were valued for their artistic excellence. Notable English factories that produced thematic "families" of collectables were Doulton and Wedgwood, among others. Jugendstil, an art nouveau style originating in German-speaking areas of Europe hugely influenced porcelain figurines.porcelain porcelain figurines collecting collection collectors Doulton Wedgwood Meissen china

Enjoy The Historic Sights Of Riga On A Baltic Cruise Posted By: Luke Tricker - Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

Choosing Baltic cruises for your next holiday will allow you to visit some of Europe's most fascinating cities, including historic Riga.

The Latvian capital is renowned for the sights of its old town, which has been given UNESCO World Heritage Site status, but is also notable for its unique mix of East and West European influences. During your visit to Riga you will see modern western-style architecture, together with lots of evidence of Latvia's time under Russian control and of Riga's history as part of Sweden and the Holy Roman Empire.

One of the highlights of your cruise holiday in the Baltic is sure to be a tour around Riga's historic centre. You will see some of the finest examples of medieval architecture that can be found anywhere in Europe, together with some magnificent art nouveau buildings.

At the centre of the old town are some of Riga's original medieval homes, including the House of the Three Brothers. And the area is packed with imposing buildings dating from the Middle Ages, including Riga castle, St Peter's and St George's churches and the famous domed cathedral, which houses a huge pipe organ.Baltic cruises cruise holiday

Originalstuben Vor 100 Jahren Posted By: adam white

Tischlerei Kitzb¼hel Original Stube Originalstube Landhau

The History Of The Chair Posted By: Laura Minx

From each of the furniture needs, the chair may be the most imperative. While the majority of other forms (save for the bed) are designed to support objects, the chair supports your human form. The term chair must be viewed here in the widest sense, from stool to throne to further items including the bench and sofa, which may be regarded as extended or connected chairs, and whose character (i.e., whether they are intended for sitting or reclining) is not clearly labeled. The social history of the chair is as curious as its history as a creative craft. The chair is not simply a physical support and/or an aesthetic piece of art; it can also be an indicator of social ranking. From the historical royal courts there were social signifiers between being seated on a chair with arms, on a chair with a back but without arms, or having to use a stool. Since the recent century, a director's and manager's chair has been regarded as iconic of superior dignity, and in democratic government debate the speaker sits on a high-set platform. As its furniture form, the chair holds a wealth of different models.business furniture office decoration

The City In The Heart Of The Natural Gas Fields Posted By: Douglas Scott

Groningen is the capital city of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands.Today, it is an important industrial and commercial centre. The city sits at the heart of one of the world's largest natural gas fields. This region has a largely flat terrain and agriculture is the main occupation.

The Heerestraat is Groningen's biggest shopping street and all the famous brands and shops can be found there. A more recent shopping area is Westerhaven and for those more unusual purchases try the Folkingestraat or the Oude Kijk in t Jastraat. Once the cornerstone of Jewish Groningen, the Folkingestraat is now one of the most diverse shopping streets in town. Nearly every day is market day in the city.

The city centre boasts no fewer than on hundred and sixty bars, cafes and discotheques, and scores of open-air terraces on which to enjoy a summer evening.
Grote Markt is the main square of the city.

The Grote Markt, the Vismarkt, the Poelestraat and Peperstraat are crowded at night, especially on Thursdays and Fridays when some bars do not close until 7 in the morning. Nightlife centre is not very big, but offers plenty choice for everyone.Flowers gas

Jugend Magazine Posted By: Mark Saunders

Germany is not known for its contributions to the world of arts and sciences which could be attributed to its being the home of the Third Reich in during the third world war. Unbeknownst to many Germany has been a major player in the evolution of European art and the development of some practices that are common place in today's world of art. One of its most visible contributions is the way print ads have their titles created and the different styles of fonts that was heavily influenced by a movement in Germany that worshiped a form of art known as JUGENDSTIL.

Jugendstil, was a style of art that became predominant in Germany in the late 19th Century. Asides from the common forms art's influence on the styles of furnishings such as in home dcor, furnishings, architecture and the design of common household utility items such as pitchers and many more. The art form boasted clean flowing lines that were heavily based on the female form. Vegetation and classical art form drew influences from the specific country of origin evolving into their own sub-groups of mainstream art forms.magazine entertainment home and family

Jugend Magazine - German Expressionism's Greatest Influence Posted By: Tom Takihi

In every culture around the world there are eras where different fads and trends reign supreme. The popular trends dictate the arts and many facets of life during their either brief of long reign and reflect the character of that era. What sets the trend differ in each instance so that some may be due to more serious issues like economics while others are ushered in by the mere introduction of a new publication. In German speaking countries in Europe this was exactly the case. A magazine, called the Jugend, set the stage for the advancement of German Art Nouveau during the late 19th and early 20th century. The Jugend not only ushered the coming of the German Art Nouveau movement but also largely influenced publication style and art worldwide.

The German Art Nouveau movement indeed became very popular and soon was very evident not only in the typical art like paintings and drawing but in architecture and other products and furniture that were made artistically. The movement, named Jugendstil in recognition of the publications contribution to the development of the movement, inspired a lot of artists indeed especially those involved in graphic arts.arts and entertainment magazine information

The Jugendstil Artists Posted By: Word Content

Jugendstil predated the magazine Jugend in Bavaria.

The first major artist of the style was Emil Hansen (later called Nolde), who had been teaching ornamental design in St. Gall since January 1892. He met Georg Hirth in 1895, and discussed the paper Jugend with him. From this short meeting, Hansen was destined to design ornament after ornament for its pages. And artist after artist found his beginning in Jugend.

Hans Heinrich Christianson was well known as a graphic designer, painter, commercial artist, and decorative artist. He created several covers for Jugend, and was a frequent art contributor.

Hugo Hoppner, also called Fidus, was born in 1868 and trained in an artists commune in Munich. In 1892 he moved to Berlin to create another commune. His graphic art illustrations were known for dream-like abstractions. Jugend could depend on him for illustrations of German mythology, and he often combined mysticism, eroticism, and symbolism in Art Nouveau and Sezessionist styles graphically. He was one of the first German Jugendstil artists to use photo advertising postcards to promote his work; many others followed, leaving us a rich legacy of remarkable postcard images that are highly sought after by collectors.jugend jugend magazine german expressionism art nouveau jugendstil art magazines collect art

The Modern Art Movements Posted By: Breiana Cecil

"What distinguishes modern art from the art of other ages is criticism."
-Octavio Paz

The Modern Art movements can be said to have begun in the mid 19th century. Up until this point, the artists of the world focused their artwork on realistic depictions of the world around them. They made their living solely on commission work, government sponsorship, and exhibitions chosen by government officials. Needless to say, a change was about to come. Insisting that there was more to express and teach through art was not only an artistic movement, but a social development as well.

The first group dedicated to this change were the Impressionists in Paris, circa 1860. The term was coined by a Claude Monet painting called Impression, Sunrise. The artists belonging to the movement were the same artists who had been rejected by the Academie des Beaux-Arts--the largest art institute in France. This indeed caused tension, and upon exhibition in 1863, it also caused the beginning of the movement. The impressionists concentrated on the light of objects in painting and the change of light over time. They insisted that painters should paint with natural light, concentrating on landscapes and scenes of daily life.Modern Art artists paintings
