Workplace Conflict Resolution Posted By: Marsha A. Ostrer, Esq.

Managing and resolving workplace conflict is one of the major challenges facing businesses and organizations. Because of our hardwired "fight or flight" response, we often respond to conflict either with avoidance or hard line, win at any cost, tactics. The problem is neither achieves a workable resolution. The good news is that better alternatives exist.

Afterall, conflict is a normal part of life. Our ability to resolve problems effectively and manage change dramatically impacts our success and work satisfaction. A company or organization's ability to resolve conflict productively impacts productivity, competitiveness, and its bottom line.

Five Ways of Addressing Conflict

There are five basic styles we humans use to address conflict:

Accommodation - or "killing them with kindness." It is surrendering one's needs and wants for the satisfaction of another. This works well in courting situations of all kinds, whether customers, potential employers, or love interests. It is the strategy of choice when the relationship is the most important element.

Avoidance - the flight part of "fight or flight." It is the process of ignoring or postponing conflict. This can be useful as a temporary measure but it never resolves the problem.Workplace Conflict Resolution Resolving Conflict in the Workplace Workplace Conflict

Prison Reform: Breaking The Grip Of The Shadow Government Posted By: Stan Moody

I received a poignant email from a colleague. She had read my article, Racketeering Charged at Maine State Prison. Her message got my attention: "The same rules that apply in prison have evolved in organized crime AND hellip;Officers gain strength by creating a 'selfhood' out of so-called 'brotherhood' because they are incapable of full humanity."

The Sicilian code of omerta holds to two primary virtues: "Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward; whoever cannot take care of himself without police protection is both." Thus is created a conspiracy of silence.

In the context of prison reform, I was having difficulty understanding why guards, who are treated poorly and unfairly by administrators, will sacrifice their personal integrity by complying with a set of arbitrary rules that are off the books and remaining silent over violations of human rights.

Just Following Orders:

The Nuremburg Trials rejected the defense that the perpetrators of the Nazi Holocaust were simply following orders. Each was tried on a high, personal standard they called "natural law.Prison Reform Abu Ghraib Maine State Prison Department of Corrections omerta Stanford Experiment Nuremburg Trials prison-reform-breaking-the-grip-of-t

Why You Must Learn To Hate Your Friends And Love Your Enemies Posted By: Leo Blanco

The world is cruel and your friends are there to cushion the pain and suffering. I guess you're wondering why I wrote this article and most importantly why you must apply this "crazy" concept if you want to gain power in life. If you look closely, you have more to fear from your friends than your enemies. Ironic isn't it?

Here's why. Your so-called friends usually say yes to whatever you say or do in order to avoid any conflict. Even if you're wearing the most hideous outfit they will still say you look good.

Unfortunately, there's no way to really tell how they feel. Moreover, your close friends know the most intimate details of your life and they have the power to use this against you when things get sour. The world is filled with stories of betrayal and I'm very sure you've experienced this same feeling at certain point in your life.

If you're interested to gain power and wealth, it is a fatal mistake to hire friends just because you trust them. Generally, hiring friends will limit your ability to expand your reach and gain more power.self improvement law of attraction sun tzu quotes success tips

The Simple Trading Gem Of The Darvas Box Method Posted By: Jimmy Cox

It's time to be Introduced to the Darvas Box Method. After years of trial and error, Nicolas Darvas perfected one of the most successful trading methods of all time. But what made his system so unique was the amount of money that it brought in. Darvas himself was often shocked at the profits his system made. Yet even with these profits aside, the most important point about his system is how easy it is to apply it.

The essence of Nicolas Darvas' method was to identify stocks that were on the rise, using only the price action and volume of a stock. Although Darvas didn't consciously set his method up this way, he created a simple way to calculate a volatility range. Normally, finding volatility ranges is an extremely complicated calculation. Yet working with nothing but the price action and range of a stock, Darvas was able to calculate a reliable volatility range.

Darvas' method is probably one of the most successful trading strategies ever created. Research has shown that his method is effective almost fifty percent of the time. This is an incredible success rate for stock market transactions.nicholas darvas nicholas darvas trading

Recipe For A Successful Merger Posted By: Jim Sirbasku

Unless you are a world-class chef, it is necessary to follow a recipe in order to create a culinary masterpiece. Just as it is difficult to cook without a recipe it is impossible to diplomatically handle mergers without a plan. Mergers and acquisitions require business leaders to pay careful attention to the details for a seamless fusion.

Yet people often get overlooked and they are much more than a detail. Like a recipe provides a chef with a list of ingredients that has already anticipated how the ingredients interact, employee assessments provide managers with a recipe for employees that can be useful intelligence for such times.

The post-merger phase requires adjustments and every angle of the businesses must be inspected. People are not typically excited about the idea of change. Therefore, it is crucial that managers view the post-merger phase as an adjustment period for their employees.mergers and acquisitions employee assessments team building employee development management

10 Simple (but Not Easy) Steps To Turning A Company Around, Particularly After A Recession Posted By: Ann Andrews

So you were hit hard during the recession. BUT YOU ARE STILL IN BUSINESS! Well done.

The past 12 months have served up a few bigger challenges than in a normal business cycle, but history is peppered with businesses that survive challenging times and even businesses that are created during challenging times.

If you have staff then you have a huge opportunity, because company turn-arounds are actually not difficult - updating systems and processes is easy; updating the thinking and skills of the 'people' in the organization is usually the obstacle.

As a Personnel Manager in the poultry processing industry I observed managers and supervisors working 60/80 hours a week stressed beyond belief while employees leaned against walls bored out of their brains. Yet if anyone dared suggest a better way, EVERYONE in the organization went into paroxysms of fear, denial and resistance. We eventually did change the way people worked in that industry, and the results we achieved amazed even the most cynical.Human resources personnel team motivation business manager people goals resistance communication

Realizing The Importance Of The I In Team Posted By: Jim Sirbasku

The clever phrase "there is no I in TEAM" is used in conference rooms throughout the corporate world. Businesses spend a great deal of time and money on team building training, seminars, and workshops. Companies are aware that in order for business to be successful people must learn to work as a team, but the phrase about the absence of "I" in team may be a problem. That phrase implies that there is no individuality brought to team situations, and that individuals with different viewpoints must not object because they are part of a team. That seems ridiculous, because effective businesses know that anti-groupthink holds a lot of value and often provides innovative ideas. What if instead of ignoring the "I," businesses focused on it, and attempted to understand each individuals potential inside of a team.

If managers could pinpoint their employee's individual strengths, they could then utilize those strengths to build a stronger team. In order for teams to be truly efficient and cohesive, team members need to understand each other's differences and how they contribute to the overall effectiveness of the team. One team member might excel where all others lack, and vice versa.employee assessments team building team analysis team development

Poor Management Leads To Failure Posted By: Jim Sirbasku

Ineffective managers contribute to the decline of productivity in the workplace worldwide. Their contributions include the dreaded 80-hour work week, discouragement of initiative and creative thinking, opposition to risk-taking, massive turnover, and the ultimate failure of many organizations.

This scenario is repeated, often in scandalously public ways, year after year. One astonishing collapse of a poorly run company earlier this decade included a customer service vice-president who did not exist, even though his name appeared at the bottom of the company's form letters. The business received so many complaints from customers that it made up the name so that no one had to deal one-on-one with dissatisfied customers.

According to a recent study by Happy Worker, "Thirty percent of workers who plan to leave their current jobs would change their mind if they were able to work under a different boss or management team." Despite this startling statistic, organization with poor management can survive for years or even decades. How is this possible?

First, many poorly managed organizations provide important goods and services, something that a majority of the population needs or wants.management styles productivity effective managers business leadership

Current Labor Markets Affect Strategic Planning Posted By: Jim Sirbasku

The famous mantra "failing to plan is planning to fail" may seem irrelevant to most, but in fact it may be one of the most important for businesses to understand. Strategic workforce planning is a process that ensures that your business has the right people in the right jobs at the right time to achieve maximum results. Strategically planning will enable companies to understand their current situations and take advantage of labor market forecasts.

To effectively plan, businesses need to understand how the current labor market directly affects their employment process. Considering multiple elements of the labor market will enable employers to make informed decisions and detect potential problems they may encounter during the hiring process. Today's economy provides a unique situation that requires businesses to primarily focus on two elements of the labor market when strategically planning. Those elements include demographic trends, and talent movement trends within each industry.

First, demographic trends are rarely given the consideration they deserve during the hiring process, but they can severely impact how businesses create strategic plans. Equal opportunities are promoted in the majority of businesses today, but research shows there are some demographics to think about in order to maximize productivity.strategic workforce planning demographics labor market business planning

Team Building In Business - What Is A Team? Posted By: Kate Tammemagi

The concept of Team is vital to success in Business, and Team Building is part of every Manager's role. By building high performing Teams an organisation can harness the power of many individuals to achieve even greater heights. A good Team has benefits both for the Company, and for the individual members of the Team. Belonging to a winning Team is one of the most satisfying and motivating factors inside and outside of work. Team Building is an important part of working life. But what exactly IS a Team?

Defining 'Team'
It is important that a Leader has a tangible, clear vision of what exactly he or she is building, and that they have a good definition of what a Team is, and what it is not. It is equally important when discussing Team Building with the Team itself, that everyone has a shared understanding of the definition of Team.

A Team is 2 or more people, but so too is a Group, and the two are very different entities. There are 4 factors that differentiate a Team from a Group of people.

1.A Team is a Group of people who work together to achieve a SHARED purpose.defining team what is a team team building work together tea

Is Ours A Herd Morality? Posted By: JOHN HARDY

Do you know the difference between right and wrong? This is the question we ask our teenagers, ad nausea. This is the litmus test for deciding if the criminal is bad or mad. The question itself presupposes that we human beings have an innate sense of right and wrong. It further assumes that what is deemed to be right and wrong is incontrovertible, that they are universal constants which transcend culture and context.

Even though the most primitive of tribes, such as aboriginals or criminals, have a rudimentary morality, this only extends to its own members. Those outside the tribe are rarely afforded equal treatment under the code. Even the medieval knights with their strict code of chivalry only reserved this treatment for others from their own caste. These same knights who would not hesitate to sacrifice themselves for the honor of a damsel in distress, thought nothing of butchering the local peasantry. Selective morality is no morality! In this sense all tribe are essentially amoral.

Even though we like to think of ourselves as freethinking individuals, the group has a strong influence on the mental frame with which we see the world.herd mentality morality groupthink free will destiny indiviudality thinking for oneself

The Challenge That Groupthink Presents To The Company Posted By: JOHN HARDY

Several years ago, I attended a Tai Chi seminar in Florida, during which we learned a long and complicated series of movements, called a form. We were in a group of about twenty, all of us novices learning the form. The members of the group were all from different parts of the North America. Few of us had met before. Our only connection was a shared interest in Tai Chi.

The master would demonstrate the form from an elevated platform, in this case a park bench, and we would attempt to replicate his movements. Periodically the master would ask the group to perform the movements on their own so that he might gauge our progress. The fascinating thing was that when we did the movements without any instructor for us to follow, the entire group would get stuck at the same place.

We would then get a prompt from the master, proceed further into the form, and yet again the entire group would come to a dead stop at another point further on in the form. Intuitively, this does not make sense.trance tribal mind control free will society herd mentality groupthink

The Benefits Of Running Your Web Applications In A Cloud Posted By: G Klingsheim

It wasn AND rsquo;t so long ago that being told you had AND ldquo;your head in a cloud AND rdquo; wasn AND rsquo;t any kind of compliment. For computer and IT folks, it is now. As AND ldquo;cloud computing AND rdquo; becomes the Buzzword Of The Millennium (until the next one) it is going through the usual growing pains AND mdash;defining itself, redefining how companies use applications, being misunderstood and, sometimes, being adopted too quickly.
New developments, in everything from computing to gardening, tend to be disruptive, especially to systems whose rationale has been reduced to AND ldquo;the way we do things. AND rdquo; That AND rsquo;s a dangerous attitude in any enterprise, but can be deadly in business. Cloud computing has already started to disrupt the way in which business users think, but the big question is, When do we jump on board? Fortunately, the benefits of running your web applications in a cloud are starting to come into focus.
Fast rising vapor?
The term for software or products that are talked up but don AND rsquo;t show up, is AND ldquo;vaporware. AND rdquo; In an interesting nexus, clouds are made up entirely of vapor.
How To Make Change Stick Posted By: Kate Mercer

Well, I've talked about 'mindsets', and I've talked about 'groupthink'. So what am I saying: that all you need to pay attention to if you want to produce effective change in your team or your organisation is the attitudes, values and beliefs of yourself and the people you work with?

The Balancing Act

Not at all. There are two clear groups of factors to take into account if you want to make the changes stick and produce outstanding results quickly, efficiently and permanently: the 'internal', and the 'external'. And there's a sensitive balance to strike when you consider which to pay attention to at any given time.

'Internal' factors include people's mindsets, and 'groupthink', together with the attitudes, values, perceptions, feelings and beliefs that dictate how people think individually and in groups. Most importantly, these 'internal' factors colour how people react to change in the world about them, including the organisation they work in.

'External' refers to what the organisation needs to change. These are the concrete, tangible structures, processes and systems that are needed in an organisation of any size to make it work effectively. Examples include organisation structures, salary schemes, IT systems, and business processes.change internal external factor manage business result people organisation leader
