<description>Neuroscientists are working extremely hard on "brain mapping" to learn ever more about how the chemistry of the human brain works and to put that understanding to use in treating emotional and functional conditions which, up to now, have been just untreatable.

One of several tools in development is the somewhat new practice of "brain mapping". This is the common phrase put to use to describe what is recognized officially as "Quantitative EEG", or "QEEG". In the simplest terms, QEEG refers to a thorough evaluation of the bandwidth from the electrical currents inside brain as are measured by an EEG machine.

The information produced are employed to develop computer generated color coded maps of the electrical currents in the cerebral cortex. The colors produced are compared to a scale used in identifying possible trouble places.

In the same manner as some other tests calculate the flow of blood within the brain, a QEEG measures electrical activity. <description>Is it even possible to do stress reduction meditation in a fast paced society where taking two twenty minute breaks to sit quietly and chant a mantra could cost you your job?

While it may not be possible to do Transcendental Meditation as described above on the job, I do believe it is very possible to weave stress reduction meditation thoughts through the course of your day.

I have watched folks in the addictions recovery community train themselves to create thoughts to gratitude or say the Serenity Prayer to themselves or out loud to change their feelings from overwhelm to calm.

Prior to learning tools like the above, the one thing that always worked to make them feel good was a substance, but as I heard an anger management client say yesterday, one beer is never enough.

Learning to weave thoughts of gratitude through the fabric of their thinking and to really feel the change in physiology that follows that is seen as gift.

There is a way to manage both anxiety and stress, or even anxiety about stress management.

The physiology of anxiety and stress is very similar, and the antidote is of course some kind of relaxation.

Most of my clients will began the anxiety stress management process by telling me of the external situation, the chronology, and the implicit assumption is that they will no longer feel anxiety or stress when the external world has been controlled.

So at this point in the process of anxiety stress management, I will ask my clients where they see me.

Almost all will reply that they see me across the room, and I will tell them that they are incorrect.

The only place they can see me is in the visual cortex, inside their head.

<description>Your stress management program is an inside job. In other words, stress is a physiology that exists inside my body. Most of us have learned to link the external world to our physiology, by blaming the outside for the inside.

(For example, I will not have stress when I earn more money. That is not necessarily true).

In order to manage that physiology I am going to have to manage my inside chemistry, which is linked to my perceptions, what I think, how I breathe, my heart rate variability coherence, how I eat...any number of variables.

When I am advocating a stress management plan to my clients, I like to use the brain fitness model, which is based on enhancing the recently discovered capacity of the human brain to grow more neurons.

At first blush, it would seem that the searcher might be seeking to manage the relief of stress, but I am going to guess that the folks searching for information using those keywords are feeling stressed, and noticing that their performance in some area of their life is impacted by stress, and they would like to change the stress from distress to eustress, and see how their performance results change.

Never heard of eustress? That is the good stress, the kind we have that helps us learn new skills and tools and apply them in our lives. Distress is the too strong stress response that can move us into a flight of fight chemistry where we have three behavioral options, run, fight, or freeze, none of which are appropriate to the office or the living room, unless perhaps you work at the Post Office.

<title>June 10th: New Cognitive Health Roadmap Announced Posted By: Alvaro Fernandez</title>
<description>Many publications haven't fully announced this yet, but we have an exciting initiative to report on. On June 10th, the National Brain Health Road Map was announced by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Alzheimer's Association. The objective of the task forece is to maintain or improve the cognitive performance of all adults accross America, helping us all maintain memory, attention, and other important mental faculties.

I want to first share with you the 10 top actions proposed by this report, and then provide a quick glossary to explain the key words that you will hear more and more when discussing brain health.

Top recommendations:

1) To ascertain how diverse groups think about brain health and its relationship with lifestyle factors. This work has already resulted in a phenomenal report on Baby boomers' attitudes towards Brain Fitness.

2) To disseminate the latest science to increase public understanding of cognitive health and to dispel common misconceptions.
