Accessible Walks In The Lake District Posted By: Lee Smith

The Lake District located in the North West of England is home to England's highest mountains. It also hosts a large concentration of lakes and tarns (smaller lakes in higher altitude) of different sizes. The rugged landscape is scaled with hundreds of walking routes that scale the mountain and lakeside. But amongst the challenging mountain hikes, there are a surprising number of walks that are accessible to all. So even the less foolhardy and able nature lovers can enjoy stunning scenery equipped in the right outdoor clothing.

Let's start with Windermere, the largest natural water lake in England. Located in the South of the Lake District National Park it is some ten miles in length and one mile wide. There is a lot of history to discover here and most of the land is owned by the National Trust and therefore being preserved. There are an abundance of cafes and tea shops around the lake, so plenty of refreshment stops to take in the views and local culture. A particularly recommended accessible and easier walk is Gummer's How, situated at the south eastern shore of the massive lake.outdoor clothing Lightline down jacket

Exploring The Richly Historic Cumbrian Town Of Egremont Posted By: Matt McFay

Egremont is a market town located in Cumbria with a rich history and a fascinating culture. It is situated on the River Ehen, only a short distance from the west coast of northern England and at the foot of the Uldale Valley and Dent Fell. The nearest larger town is Whitehaven, actually located on the coast and Egremont is also just over an hour away by road from Carlisle. Its northern location also means it is only a fairly short drive to the Scottish border, where towns such as Gretna are easily accessible. There is no train station in Egremont itself but there are good bus links with Whitehaven which has decent rail connections; in addition, the A595 bypasses Egremont, offering excellent road links throughout Cumbria and beyond.

Egremont has a history that dates back to a Danish settlement on the site from some time before 1000AD and there was a Norman castle at the town from the 12th Century, the ruins of which are still present today and provide a popular tourist attraction. Since around 1300 the town has had a similar layout to that which it has now, with its main street widening out into a market square.property real estate estate agents buy house house for sale buy flat business property search to let property mortgage home and garden finance

Santa Special At Threlkeld Quarry Posted By: Sally

On a bitterly cold and grey December afternoon, William and Merryn braved the outside carriages on the Santa Special. They very much enjoyed sitting behind Ian the engine driver and his collie dog Jip, who howled with excitement when the tooting engine horn signalled the start of the ride! Mince pies and mulled wine kept the adults happy whilst there was a trip to see Father Christmas in his decorated portacabin grotto (!) for the children.

The Quarry and Museum is normally open seven days a week between Easter and October with plenty on offer for families and adult visitors alike. The location is well within reach of several Keswick cottages in the area.

Set in dramatic scenery on the edge of Keswick the Threlkeld Quarry AND Mining Museum is run by enthusiastic staff and volunteers. The site offers an underground tour, a geology and mining museum and a shop. There is free parking should you be travelling from further afield.

Sir Tom is a jewel in the crown for the Quarry, having undergone a complete restoration after its arrival in 2001.Cottages in the Lake District Lake District cottages Keswick cottages

On Writing: Who Tells The Story? Posted By: Harry Bingham

If it's a first-person narrative there is unlikely to be a problem. You probably had a clear vision of this character narrating when you first had the idea for the book. With a third-person narrative you have more options open to you. We rarely use the God-like overview of Victorian novelists now. The viewpoint usually narrows down to one specific character, with only a partial view of what is going on. Should it be the chief protagonist? A lesser character who can bear witness to these events, like Lockwood in Wuthering Heights? Although The Writers' Workshop rightly steers novelists towards a single viewpoint, it is common in children's books to alternate between two protagonists, often one boy, one girl. This can allow us to know more of the plot than would otherwise be the case.

Whichever you choose, the person through whose eyes we see the action is not synonymous with you, the author. They are a real character in the story. They have a personality and history different from yours. The way they tell the story can be a valuable way of letting us in on the kind of person they are, without telling us in so many words. How to write Writing Tips Writing courses Fiction Non-Fiction first-person narrative

Lake District Industry Posted By: Adrian Vultur

Lakeland carriers ventured south each winter with cloth for the Italian galleys, taking home with them winter luxuries for the Westmorland housewife oranges, nuts, wines and dried fruitsin addition to the raw materials of industry. arrivals grounding their craft on Cumbrian beaches around the opening years of the tenth century. Main areas of the Viking landings were around St. Bees Head to the west of the Park and along the northern side of Morecambe Bay. The process of taking over the thinly populated land was very gradual and not complete even by the twelfth century. Although some raids may have been accompanied by violence, there was plenty of un-utilised land, and it was mainly as settlers that they left their mark. The place names show that the National Park was once predominantly Scandinavian in culture.

As W. G. Collingwood pointed out' if we try to recast the progress of Norse settlement in the Lake District, we find that the placenames are curiously suggestive. At the mouths of the valleys which converge towards the centre of the fells there is nearly always a place (often a by) named after some early owner.Things to do in Windermere

Medieval Lake District Posted By: Adrian Vultur

For most of the medieval period literary sources for the history of the area are very sparse, leaving large gaps in our knowledge, of which many are unlikely ever to be filled. From the sixth century onwards much of the area belonged for some time to the Celtic kingdom of Cumbria with its capital at Dumbarton on the Clyde. But its frontiers are uncertain and certainly were not stable, the whole area for long after the Norman Conquest being something of a noman's land, During the sixth and seventh centuries not very strong bands of Anglian colonists pushed into the Park area from the Eden valley and lands around Morecambe Bay.

But they were people who liked good farming land so left much of the Park untouched, though amongst other things they gave their names to Keswick ('cheese farm'), Buttermere (the Lake adjoined by pastures yielding plenty of butter) and Staveley ('the wood where staves were got').The Aphrodites Romantic Hotel in the Lake District

Following The Seasons In The Lake District Posted By: Sally

Everyone knows that the Lake District is beautiful. Each season has its own character, so no two visits would ever be the same. There is an abundance of self catering Lake District cottages to help enhance your visit. Here are some of our seasonal favourites...

Spring

Magical walks through bluebell-carpeted woods, spotting wood sorrel as its flowers rotate to follow the sun throughout the day; golden celandines; wild garlic with its starry white flowers; jolly primroses and frothy dog's mercury. Try Wallabarrow Woods in the Duddon Valley, Dodd Wood near Keswick, Johnny's Wood in Borrowdale or the Brandlehow Wood at Derwentwater.

Head to Ullswater to catch Wordsworth's famous Daffodills: 'I wandered lonely as a Cloud/That floats on high o'er Vales and Hills/When all at once I saw a crowd/ A host of dancing Daffodills'. They were inspired by a walk taken by Wordsworth's sister, Dorothy, in April 1802.

While you're in the Ullswater area, take a frosty walk up Aira Force. When the waterfall still has it's post-winter volume, but before the tree canopy has closed overhead in spring, it's a really magical sight.self catering lake district lake district cottages holiday cottages lake district cottages in the lake district cottages lake district

Is It Worth Taking The Risk In Snow? Posted By: Sabina Kucz

This year, being 2010, has seen the UK severely hit by unexpected weather conditions. Although last year was a very bad time the lead through into the New Year. Cumbria as a whole county was seriously unprepared for the snow in 2009/2010. Many accidents and even fatalities occurred from the hazardous conditions. Lessons were learnt rapidly and the council vowed that they will be better prepared for this the next time round.

Well here we are the next time and are we prepared? The simple answer is a straight no. Surely grit would be evident but unfortunately we find that many Cumbrian Counties are still, if not worse than the previous snow fall. Gritters were only ever seen on the road post snow fall and not seen since. As the weather warms slightly and starts to melt the snow, the sun goes away and approaches night fall, the prime time for temperature to drop and what happens to the melted snow? Yes that's right it freezes and yet not a dingle gritter vehicle in sight. And they wonder why so many accidents happen!lake district cottages

Lake District Breweries Posted By: Sally

I hear a rumour that there are 28 breweries in Cumbria. Certainly, I ran out of fingers AND toes listing the ones that come readily to mind! I tried to come up with a Top Ten from that fabulous long list, but I'm afraid it just wouldn't get shorter than fourteen. There are plenty of self catering lake district cottages to stay in near these breweries, it"d be crazy to miss out. So, in no particular order, enjoy!

1. Keswick Brewery
Thanks to the Keswick Brewery, Brewery Lane is once more alive with the sounds and smells of a proper craft brewery. Established in 2006, the Keswick Brewery is located on the site of the town's Victorian brew house, producing a number of popular beers all named 'Thirst "" something' : Thirst Run (4.2% ABV), a golden pale ale; Thirst Fall (4.8% ABV), a chocolatey, malty bitter; Thirst Noel (6% ABV), a dark, rich, malty ale and Thirst Rescue (3.7% ABV ), a citrussy, golden bitter that makes a donation to the Mountain Rescue.self catering lake district lake district cottages holiday cottages lake district cottages in the lake district cottages lake district
