Spot Birth Defects By Scanning Techniques Posted By: josexwraba

A parental concern that something could be wrong with their baby is a normal one. A birth defect is a problem that happens while a infant is developing in the mother's womb. The majority of birth defects occur in the first 3 months of pregnancy.

Defects of limbs, heart and spinal cord together represent about 50% of all abnormalities.

The most usual kinds of defect are those affecting the limbs (arms and legs). Missing or additional fingers or toes, deficiencies in limb length, and abnormalities in positioning, such as club foot are all possible limb defects.

Clubfoot is a term used to describe a group of structural defects of the foot and ankle in which the bones, joints, muscles, and blood vessels are formed incorrectly. One or both feet may be affected and the defects could rank from mild to severe. Feet affected by this defect most often point down, turn in, and generally have a limited range of motion.

A birth defect may affect how the body looks, works or both. Particular birth defects like cleft lip are structural problems that can be simple to detect in a 4D scan before birth.4D scan

If Your Child Was Born With A Birth Defect, You May Be Able To File A Zoloft Lawsuit Posted By: Roger Design

Many women experience depression in their lifetimes, and a high percentage of them end up taking anti-depressants which literally save their lives.Anti-depressants can serve a lot of good in many situations. There are also plenty of women who suffer from depression and then go on to get pregnant. Some of these women were taking the anti-depressant Zoloft during their pregnancies without being warned of its potential for birth defects in their unborn baby.Zoloft's manufacturer, Pfizer, did not publicize its knowledge of said birth defects until years after many children were born with problems. Now women are looking back and realizing that they may be able to file a Zoloft lawsuit.
There have been many studies done that show a strong connection between taking Zoloft while pregnant and birth defects, however, Pfizer was slow to report the findings of these studies, for fear that women would stop taking it.Many children were born with birth defects such as anal atresia (closure of the anus), Omphalocele, heart defects, cleft lip and/or palate, clubfoot, defects with the skull or limbs, neural tube defects, and PPHN (pulmonary hypertension of the newborn).Fosamax side effects Zoloft birth defects hip replacement problems Zoloft lawsuit

Famous People Who Were Born With Clubfoot Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

You may be surprised to learn, but some famous celebrities and athletes were born with clubfoot, here are just a few!

Comedian/actor Damon Wayans is famous for starring in the TV show 'My Wife And Kids,' but he was also born with a clubfoot. He was reportedly teased as a child and learned to fend off putdowns, which later led him to stand-up comedy.

Another comic actor was born with a clubfoot is Dudley Moore, who starred in 'Arthur' and several other films; prior to that he was part of a comedy team with Peter Cook.

Superbowl MVP Troy Aikman played quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, but few people know that he had a clubfoot at birth and was in plaster casts until he was 8 months old, then he wore special shoes until he was 3 years old. Since then he has not suffered from any form of club foot.

Another pro football player, Charles Woodson, who played for the Oakland Raisers, was also born with a clubfoot, which was later corrected.

Top female athlete Mia Hamm was a member of the U.S. women's soccer team, which competed in the 1996 Olympics.Ponseti Method of clubfoot correction clubfoot doctors famous people with clubfoot foot doctor foot specialist babies with clubfoot clubfoot correctio

Clubfoot Management: How To Keep Your Child's Shoes From Slipping Off Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

After your child has been through his or her clubfeet castings, they will need to wear a brace attached to a pair of tiny shoes for a certain period of time to prevent a relapse. This bracing one of the most important treatments for clubfoot. One challenge parents may find is how to keep their children's feet from slipping out of their shoes. Here are a few tips and tricks to help your child stay in his or her shoes!

One trick is to add calf skin (also called mole skin) inside the heel which should help prevent your child from getting out of the shoe. Also, consider Mitchell Shoes which are specially made to fit the smaller feet of children under a year old.

If your child continues to escape from the shoe, try tightening the shoe strap by one more hole, tighten the laces (but do not cut off circulation), and/or remove the tongue of the shoe (use of the brace without the tongue will not harm your child).

Try the Dobbs Bar, it will let your little one move their legs independently.clubfoot doctor clubfoot specialist clubfoot treatment clubfoot management clubfoot shoes

Clubfoot Information That Parents Need To Know Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

If you have a baby with clubfoot, or know someone who does, here is some vital information about clubfoot that all parents should know.

How likely is your baby to be born with clubfoot?

Clubfoot is more common in males. Family history. If you, your spouse or your other children have had clubfoot, your baby is more likely to have it as well. Smoking during pregnancy. If a woman with a family history of clubfoot smokes during pregnancy, her baby's risk of the clubfoot may be 20 times greater than average. Taking anti-depressants during pregnancies. Some anti-depressants, such as Zoloft, have been found to cause babies with clubfoot.

How do you know if your baby has clubfoot?

Clubfoot twists the top of your baby's foot downward and inward. The foot may be turned so severely that it actually looks as if it's upside-down. The calf muscles in your child's affected leg are usually underdeveloped. The clubfoot may be up to 1 centimeter (about .4 inches) shorter than the other foot.

What are the complications of clubfoot in babies?

When your baby gets older, he or she is likely to have arthritis.clubfoot information clubfoot repair management of clubfoot ponseti clubfoot treatment for clubfoot treatment of clubfoot

Why Is It Important For Your Child To Wear A Brace For Clubfoot? Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

If your child has been treated by the Ponseti method for clubfoot, it is likely that she or he will need to wear a foot abduction brace after their castings are complete. This brace keeps the clubfoot in its corrected position, preventing a relapse.

The brace is used only after the clubfoot has been completely fixed by manipulation, serial casting and a possible tenotomy. The brace is effective in 95% of the patients. Parents will be relieved to know that 'bracing' will not cause developmental problems for their child.

Relapses are common among children with clubfoot, up to the age of six years. That's why bracing is an important part of the treatment of clubfoot and prevents relapses. You don't want to go back to square one.

Whether your child had a severe clubfoot at birth or a clubfoot that wasn't extreme, he or she is at equal risk of the their clubfoot going back to its deformed position, if the a clubfoot brace isn't worn exactly as a foot doctor recommends.

Bracing hours will be different for each child.clubfoot doctor clubfoot specialist babies with clubfoot foot doctor treating clubfoot managing clubfoot clubfoot brace

Study: Clubfoot Defect May Be Caused By Smoking Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

According to Dr. Allan Hackshaw of the University College London Cancer Institute, who led a study published in the journal "Human Reproduction Update," smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of a wide range of birth defects, including skull defects, missing or deformed limbs, cleft palate, protrusion of the gastrointestinal system through the skin and heart problems and clubfoot. Smoking during pregnancy is already well known for increasing the risk of miscarriage, low birth weight and premature birth, but very few public health educational policies mention birth defects when referring to smoking and those that do are not specific; this is largely because of past uncertainty over which ones are directly linked, said Dr. Hackshaw.

Hackshaw and his colleagues surveyed the medical literature for the last 50 years looking for studies that examined smoking and birth defects. They ultimately isolated 172 reports that, collectively, found 173,687 infants born with birth defects and 11,674,332 healthy controls. Analyzing the data, they found:

- A 33% increased risk of skull defects.

- A 28% increased risk of being born with a clubfoot.

- A 28% increased risk of cleft lip or cleft palate.Ponseti Method of clubfoot correction treatment for clubfoot in newborns babies clubfoot foot doctor clubfoot treatment foot specialist clubfoot studi

Does Your Doctor Follow The Ponseti Method To Correct Clubfoot? Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

Is your foot doctor using the Ponseti Method to treat clubfoot? Some foot doctors may "say" they are using the Ponseti Method, but they may be only referring to the fact that they do serial plaster casts, or they may have modified it, or not be following it exactly.

Research has shown that the best results are achieved by following the protocol of the Ponseti Method exactly as developed by Dr. Ponseti. Here are some questions to ask, or things to note, if you are not sure that your doctor is using the true Ponseti Method.

Is the doctor using full leg casts or half leg casts? The answer should be full leg casts. The Ponseti Method uses casts up to the groin and bent at the knee. This helps to immobilize and hold the manipulated foot in the right position so that the ligaments, tendons and skin can grow until the next cast is applied.

How many casts are needed to correct a clubfoot? The answer should be 3 to 6 casts, and maybe a couple more if the clubfoot is very severe and stiff.management of clubfoot clubfoot doctor Ponseti Method of clubfoot correction clubfoot doctors clubfoot specialist

Are Mitchell Shoes The Best Shoes For Clubfoot? Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

Dr. Ignacio Ponseti, an orthopedic surgeon, developed the Ponseti Method to correct clubfoot during his tenure at the University of Iowa Hospital. The Ponseti Method involves the use of four to five casts,to manipulate the foot to correct the deformity. After the castings are complete, the clubfeet need to be placed in braces (such as the Dobbs Brace), which have small shoes attached.

Dr. Ponseti said that in the 1950 AND prime;s when he was first developing his method that he used regular shoes from J.C. Penneys. He would cut the toes out of them and put a couple of screws through the bottom of the shoes and attach them to a bar. Eventually, J.C. Penney's stopped making those kind of shoes and other companies such as the Markell Shoe Company began manufacturing them.

But in attaching Markell shoes to new babies feet, there is occasionally a problem with sores or blisters while children's feet get used to the shoes. Also, for a small percentage of clubfeet in the first year, the Markell shoes may not fit or stay on very well.

Enter John Mitchell, a small businessman in Iowa whose specialty is molded plastic medical models.clubfoot doctor clubfoot treatment clubfoot shoes clubfoot specialist clubfoot management

Report: Clubfoot, No Clear Cause, But Ponseti Method Cures Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

IRINNews.org recently reported that, worldwide, 150,000 babies are born with clubfoot, which is when the feet are turned inward at birth. Fortunately, there is a cost-effective, non-surgical cure, the Ponseti Method.

Ignacio Ponseti of the University of Iowa developed the non-surgical intervention in 1963, but only decades later did his research catch on in the United States, Canada and the UK.

Named after its inventor, the Ponseti Method means that clubfoot can be fixed with corrective foot manipulation and castings, followed by corrective shoe braces.

"It [clubfoot] stops children from following life's normal trajectory. In developing nations, children with neglected clubfoot face great practical difficulties and are often stigmatized. As a result, many do not attend school and cannot find work or a marriage partner," said Canada-based health expert Shafique Pirani.

Clubfoot is the most common and serious birth defect of the muscular skeletal system, said Pirani. "It has been a scourge on civilization for thousands of years, but until the Ponseti technique began to be practiced in the 1990s, the only cure was expensive, corrective surgery.baby with clubfoot clubfoot babies clubfoot in newborns clubfoot management clubfoot treatment ponseti method treatment for clubfoot

Mothers Taking Zoloft Linked To Clubfoot In Babies Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

We don't know exactly what causes clubfoot in babies, but studies have shown that taking the anti-depressant drug Zoloft during pregnancy has been found to increase the risk of several birth defects. These birth defects include clubfoot in babies. If taken during pregnancy, Zoloft can cross the placental barrier and enter the fetal blood stream, where the drug may interfere with normal growth development.

Clubfoot is when your baby's foot is twisted out of shape or position. The term "clubfoot" refers to the way the foot is positioned at a sharp angle to the ankle, like the head of a golf club. Clubfoot is a relatively common birth defect and is usually an isolated problem for an otherwise healthy newborn.

In some cases, clubfoot can be associated with other abnormalities of the skeleton, such as spina bifida, a serious birth defect that occurs when the tissue surrounding the developing spinal cord of a fetus doesn't close properly.

Environmental factors (such as Zoloft and other SSRI drugs) can also play a role in causing clubfoot. Studies have also linked clubfoot to cigarette smoking during pregnancy, especially when a family history of clubfoot is already present.babies born with clubfoot baby with clubfoot clubfoot in babies clubfoot treatment for babies what causes clubfoot in babies

What Is Clubfoot And How Can It Be Treated? Posted By: Dr Alireza Khosroabadi DPM

Clubfoot is a type of birth defect that causes the lower extremity to take on the shape similar to a golf club. In adults, children, and infants with Clubfoot the leg is short in appearance, the heel points downward, the front half of the foot turns inward, the heel can appear narrow, the muscles in the calf are generally smaller compared to normal, and the Achilles tendon is tight.

Clubfoot is a "multi-factorial trait," which means the causes of clubfoot are believed to be genetic and environmental. On the genetic end, a clubfoot deformity happens to boys twice as often as girls and occurs more often in families with a history of clubfoot. It is environmental in the sense that the fetus is not actually born with a clubfoot, but rather will develop the clubfoot while in the mother's womb.

Although this deformity occurs in nearly 1 out of every 1000 births, the exact cause of Clubfoot has not yet been determined. The cause of Clubfoot is believed to possibly have to do with the position of the unborn baby in the uterus. Sometimes babies with clubfoot will have serious neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida.clubfoot treatment treatment for clubfoot treatment of clubfoot clubfoot deformity babies with clubfoot causes of clubfoot ponseti method

The time in which the foot begins to develop during infancy and early childhood is vital to ensuring healthy feet during adulthood. This article will discuss some of the ways parents can ensure proper foot development, and what to look out for that could indicate a developmental problem.

The development of the human foot begins in the embryo stage, and continues throughout the time we spend in the womb. When a baby is born, all the components that a foot needs for proper function are generally present, with the exception of several bones that are only cartilage at that point. Overall, the complete infrastructure is there, and the foot needs only to strengthen, grow, and create bone over time. The body has an amazing ability to do this on it's own, and needs little external help. Parents do have the ability improve this development, and can play a role in assuring proper development.baby's feet foot deformity baby shoes foot turns in when walking child begin to walk foot growing indianapolis foot doctor indianapolis podiatrist ind
