Ageism In The Workplace Posted By: Julie Austin

A recent Linked In poll talked about discrimination in the job market and who suffered the most under it. The question that was asked was "What type of discrimination, if any, is prevalent in today's job market?" The answers were "older, younger, unemployed, and race/ethnicity". An overwhelming number of participants answered that older workers were discriminated against the most, with the long term unemployed coming in a close second. This shows that the older and longer term unemployed are finding the current job market especially brutal and unforgiving.

In 1967 the Age Discrimination in Employment Act was signed which protects people 40 years or older from age discrimination in the workplace. It applies to companies that have 20 or more employees, including government employees. The protections include apprenticeship programs, job notices and advertisements, pre-employment inquires, and benefits.

But even with these laws in place, it still doesn't stop the rampant ageism that continues every day. Stereotypes are deeply engrained. Older workers are seen as being slower to change, even though many older workers are actually very open to change and are quite tech savvy.job market age discrimination unemployed older workers job notices long term unemployed employees government employees workplace creating your own job

Give Your Loved One With Wonderful Gift Baskets Posted By: Harry Jakob

Gift Baskets represent warm traditional presents that are given with heartfelt wishes and love. They can be filled with an assortment of food, drinks or whatever you desire. The contents will depend on the occasion basically and on the recipient. Male and female Gift Basket recipients would have a common interest in a food and drinks Gift Basket but cosmetics and toiletries would be geared more towards the female recipient. There is much common sense involved with choosing appropriate Gift Baskets and if you intend to build your own Gift Basket then gender considerations are important. Whilst the same consideration could be applied to building Gift Baskets for older people we could be accused of ageism and at that point it is purely a case of being sensible and sensitive to the needs and wishes of the individual recipients.

There are certain gifts that cross over all boundaries and a few that spring immediately to mind are drinks and foods such as brandy, sherry, biscuits and cake. However giving Gift Baskets requires certain sensitivities and people skills that denotes the very personalised gifts they actually are. Knowing the recipient personally dictates what type of Gift Basket you will offer them.Gift Baskets

Is The Average American Still Average? Posted By: Knight Pierce Hirst

More American couples are unmarried. According to the 2010 census, 12% of couples were unmarried - a 25% increase in the past 10 years. Sixty-six percent of the cities with the largest share of unmarried couples were in the Northeast and Midwest - cities where employment opportunities were more precarious. Camden, New Jersey had the highest share - 35%. The census showed lower shares of unmarried couples in middle-class and upscale suburban areas. Baltimore had 27%; however, nearby Columbia, Maryland had 9%. It seems the bad economy was a major factor. Two can live as cheaply as one - if one doesn't eat.

Two may not be able to live as cheaply as one; but according to a 2011 Bureau of Labor Statistics report, married people can live more cheaply than single people. A typical married person 21 to 23 years old spent more on average than a single person the same age - $21,138 and $19,980 respectively a year. At those ages married people earned about 33% more. Among 27 to 29 year olds, income levels were about the same.marriage income vacations leisure age

Ageism---between Truth And Consequences Posted By: Gwendolyn M. Ward

I spoke to a woman in her late 50s who was humorously telling me about ending her 30-year marriage. Her husband had an affair and, after she confronted him, he asked her was she happily married prior to the discovery? She said, "Pretty much," and he then confessed to having other affairs over the years; but since she was "pretty much" happy, then why divorce?

She was stunned by his revelation and even more shocked when the majority of her friends agreed with him. Her friends told her that she had a great house, luxury cars, and three successful adult children. Why rock the boat? Why change at her age? Why throw away 30 years? Why start over?
She questioned why change in her 50"s was labeled as starting over. Why couldn't it just be change? A divorce didn't negate her successes prior to it; she was still a loving and supportive parent, caring daughter, and a successful executive. She loved her husband but not at the cost of her self-respect; he wasn't her life but a part of it.

To her, the divorce was a change in course while moving forward.Aging Baby Boomer Baby Boomers Divorce Generational Performance Skills success Ageism transitioning career development career transitioni

An Appreciation Of Dr. Robert Butler, Advocate For The Aging Posted By: PhilipJSherman

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Do you intend to live to a ripe old age? To enjoy "the last of life for which the first was made," as Robert Browning wrote?

If so, you need to pause a moment and tip your hat to Dr. Robert Butler, who passed July 3, 2010 in New York City. He was 83 years old., full of honors and of years.

I knew Dr. Butler professionally and worked with him as a consultant to The National Caucus and Center on Black Aged. He was a much respected and even revered member of the Board of Directors. His fellow directors realized that they, along with so many other elder services, might not even exist without his pioneering work on aging.

Dr. Butler And The Invisible Aged

Until Dr. Butler and his ground breaking work, it is hardly too much to say that the aged, while everywhere among us, were not seen and were but rarely considered.

In a very real way, therefore, Dr. Butler discovered the aged and turned the spotlight on their deplorable situation.commission crusher behind commission crusher commission crusher- commission crusher exactly money online commission crusher works online office

Strange But True - Dirty Cars Are Involved In More Accidents Posted By: Richard Craig

I don't know what it is about this time of year, but car insurance seems to be in the news rather a lot recently: first we had the European Court of Justice's ruling that women will, as of next year, pay more for their premiums in an effort to introduce parity to the system which has hitherto rewarded them for their statistically better behaviour behind the wheel and offset a 'discriminatory' disparity which has become de rigueur in recent decades.

Then we heard insurers complaining about the House of Commons Transport Select Committee's steadfast refusal to pin the blame for their rising costs, which they transfer to their customers anyway, on to personal injury lawyers and other associated practitioners.

Subsequently we then had the welcome suggestion from the Co-operative that they would fit clients' cars with a black box data recorder, thus removing the blanket premium, er, premium often levied at young male drivers.claim compensation for a car accident

What Do Percentages Say About Americans? Posted By: Knight Pierce Hirst

Fifty-four percent of men have experienced love at first sight versus 41% of women. That's according to the largest, most comprehensive, American study on singles. The 2011 "Single in America" study included 5,200 singles ages 21-65. The study found that only 20% of men and 29% of women thought the same ethnicity was very important. Only 17% of men and 28% of women thought the same religion was very important. Regarding ageism, 21% of women had dated someone 10 or more years younger. About 33% of Americans are single - but it seems that they are less "single-minded".

However, 14% of Americans in a 2010 AP/Petside poll said if they had to chose between their significant other and their pet, they'd chose their pet. In a breakdown of the sexes, females were likelier than males to say it would be a tough decision - 40% to 26%. However, when it came to dog owners versus cat owners, there was no difference. Thirty-five percent of both said it would be a hard choice. Of course, because only 1,000 of the 1,501 adults in the nationwide poll were pet owners, some might say the poll was "petty".love pets exercise flu

Holiday Safe: Backpacking Not Just For The Young Posted By: Herbert Miller

Once upon a time, backpacking was the sole preserve of the young: students who wanted to find themselves, experience other cultures and seek spirituality (translation: drink their way around Australia but have a good time doing it) before finding a job and settling down. Either way, this is not the case anymore. Make way for the Golden Gappers!

With the population living longer and more healthily, older people are choosing backpacking, or independent travel, as a way to enjoy their retirement, made easier with the advantages of senior discounts and the luxury of time and money. A survey carried out by the Telegraph revealed that older backpackers were leaving their younger counterparts far behind, visiting an average of 12.8 countries as opposed to 5.8 managed by 18 to 25 year olds.

Norm says: "at 71 years old, I continue to backpack around America and South East Asia. [It is] a way of life that has kept me in top physical condition and seen as being much younger."

The economic power of the 'grey pound' has not gone unnoticed by the travel industry.Best backpacking insurance Gap year travel insurance

Ageism In The Workplace Posted By: Jayden Briggs

There is a tendency to assume that employers veer towards people with less experience in the market place. Why is that? Do they consider the mature applicant to be less flexible, less driven and less technologically aware? It would be naive to think that age isn't taken into account, when employers are looking at a prospective applicant. However the number of people working beyond the age of 65, is, apparently, rising by a third, according to the 'office of National Statistics and so the competition for challenging senior roles will increase; this is especially true of the 'Interim Management' market place.

A great many 'purchasing' activities are 'project' driven - therefore it would follow that the older one is, the greater the experience on a diverse range of projects. Functional projects such as - business process re-engineering, information technology, financing of new product launches, franchising and licensing agreements, critical commercial negotiations, export development and sales improvement etc.,

In an increasingly competitive business environment, mature 'Interim Managers' would be required for their length of experience for short-term needs arising from acquisitions or sudden take-overs; relocation and expansion or consolidation of facilities in the office or manufacturing environment; privatization issues;business

Overcoming Ageism In Organisations Posted By: Alex Gray

Ageism in organisations is a considerable issue and needs to be tackled effectively in order to ensure it is not an ongoing problem. Ageism discriminates unfairly against people on the basis of their age and fails to take account of other qualities, skills and experience a person might bring to an organisation. This discrimination may be against younger people but is actually more prevalent with older people, usually with people older than say 50 years of age. Ageism is rooted in stereotyping behaviours in which assumptions are made about people of a certain age.

It is often in the workplace that older people encounter ageism, in job interviews and in terms of losing jobs. Developed countries do tend to have legislation in place in order to eradicate ageism in organisations, and this clearly gives support to people who are discriminated against. However, it is notoriously difficult to change people's attitudes, habits and prejudices. Unfortunately, those who do have ageist opinions often do not realise the damage they can do to the people being discriminated against.ageism workplace diversity organisations

Have You Found Yourself Wondering About...? Posted By: Knight Pierce Hirst

Have you ever wondered why there isn't a traffic jam when a swarm of bees returns to its hive? Because other bees inside the hive rush to open the bottleneck. Why do fish swim in schools? Because thousands of eyes are better at spotting food, as well as danger. What does a queen ant do? She just lays eggs. The work of the hive is divided among maintenance ants, trash collectors, foragers and patrollers. There aren't any bosses. In nature many species work together for the good of the whole. So...have you ever wondered why we call them dumb animals?

Have you wondered about bias in drug trails that are funded by the pharmaceutical industry? American and Canadian researchers looked at 546 trials in a registry of both federal and private trials in the U.S. and abroad. Sixty-three percent of them were funded by the drug industry and more than 85% of the industry-funded trials posted favorable results. That was 4 times greater than the favorable results posted for government- and non-profit-funded trials.bee fish ant drug trial expiration date lawn

4 Top Issues Facing Hr Professionals In Today's Hr Market Posted By: Mark Carey

HR professionals fulfil a variety of functions in any organisation, incorporating payroll, recruitment policies, online induction, legal issues, company structure and matters of confidentiality, to name a few. They are also faced with a large number of ethical and sometimes moral issues when it comes to dealing with sensitive staffing matters, not the least of which include confidentiality and privacy.

As a profession, they must adapt to ever-changing economic and political climates, not to mention the vagaries of company policies that can be set without reference or input from them. The challenges therefore are many, but some issues stand out for more urgent attention. Here is a list that will start your thinking:

An immediate issue to be confronted is that of rebuilding staff confidence after the difficult years that followed the global financial crisis. Staffing levels were battered and salaries remained largely stagnant, having a negative impact on morale and output generally. It is a continuing challenge to capitalise on the emerging economic recovery and rebuild staff morale, while at the same time planning for the expansion which will inevitably follow.online induction training management software.

Looking Old: An Actor's Worst Nightmare Posted By: Jim Terroirier

Hollywood is well known for idolizing youth and beauty especially nowadays. All one has to do is look at current stars like Taylor Swift,Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers.

Therefore, it is no surprise that many stars have decided to take measures to look younger. Nicole Kidman, for instance, is one high-profile actress who appears to have resorted to Botox or other fillers in order to rejuvenate her appearance. However, not everyone agrees that she succeeded. Stephanie Zacharek, a senior film critic at respected culture magazine Salon.com has written that she rather dislikes Kidman's new look. Other stars have taken somewhat more drastic surgical measures, as we can pinpoint with Rupert Everett and his brow lift.

In fact, the pressure to stay young-looking is so strong that people often say that those who never go the opportunity to grow old were, in a way, lucky. Entertainers who die young, such as Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Jim Morrison tend to be romanticized by popular culture.anti aging youth aging aging stars staying young hollywood youth actors hgh resveratrol

Why It Is Rude To Ask A Woman's Age Posted By: Jim Terroirier

It is considered a matter of traditional (Western) etiquette not to ask a woman her age. However, the exact reason why this is thought to be rude is not clear. Many people have different explanations as to why asking a woman her age is not polite. This article sets out some of those common theories and explores the assumptions behind them.

According to some standards, this question only really violates etiquette if the asker is a man, not another woman. One of the reasons has to do with the idea that women usually have an earlier "expiration date" than men. In other words, a woman will probably stop being considered attractive at a relatively early age as compared to her male counterpart. Thus, the "burden" of appearing young tends to be placed on the woman, when it comes to interaction between the sexes. A man will find it easier to assume that he is not too old, while it is riskier for a woman to make the same assumption. The woman might be nervous that, if she does not give the "right" answer AND #8212;i.e. happen to be young enough AND #8212;then the man will simply dismiss her from his attention.etiquette hgh aging anti aging age etiquette wrinkles old age

Addiction To Youth: Out With The Old At Work? Posted By: Jim Terroirier

Guarding against discrimination is a major part of workplace-related laws and regulations. Employers and managers are not supposed to treat people unfairly on grounds of sex, religion, race, or age. Merit and performance are supposed to be the deciding factors in a person's career.

Of course, actually putting these fine principles of fairness into practice does not always work. Sometimes, you do get clear instances of glaring discrimination, such as a bank being unwilling to hire homosexuals because they are supposedly unable to keep secrets and would doubtless betray client confidentiality. However, there are also the "gray area" issues, where discrimination is simply taken for granted, or convincingly mixed in with concerns of strict merit and qualification.

In the Philippines, for example, many hospitals (even those run or partially-run by the government) have an age cap on nurses who begin service at the lowest rung in their hospitals. Nurses over 35 or so need not apply.

The reason given for this practice is that nurses often have very physically demanding jobs. They must lift and carry patients, haul medical equipment, and somehow refrain from catching (too many) diseases while spending all their time around sick people.aging work aging work work discrimination stay healthy hgh resveratrol

Growing Old In The Spotlight Posted By: Jim Tirtolinomo

The entertainment industry is one that famously (or notoriously) privileges youth and beauty. This seems to be especially the case these days, particularly if one looks at the artists who are dominating today's pop charts: people like Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, and Tokio Hotel.

Therefore, it is no surprise that many stars have decided to take measures to look younger. Nicole Kidman, for instance, is one high-profile actress who appears to have resorted to Botox or other fillers in order to rejuvenate her appearance. However, not everyone agrees that she succeeded.
