Ancient Egypt History ' Posted By: Dave Clark

The Hellenistic and Roman Periods
The occupation of Egypt by the forces of Alexander the Great in 332 BC brought an end to Persian rule. Alexander appointed Cleomenes of Naucratis, a Greek resident in Egypt, and his Macedonian general, known later as Ptolemy I, to govern the country. Although two Egyptian governors were named as well, power was clearly in the hands of Ptolemy, who in a few years took absolute control of the country.
The Ptolemaic Dynasty
Rivalries with other generals, who carved out sections of Alexander's empire after his death in 323 BC, occupied much of Ptolemy's time, but in 305 BC he assumed the royal title and founded the dynasty that bears his name (see Ptolemaic Dynasty). Ptolemaic Egypt was one of the great powers of the Hellenistic world, and at various times it extended its rule over parts of Syria, Asia Minor, Cyprus, Libya, Phoenicia, and other lands. Partly because native Egyptian rulers had a reduced role in affairs of state during the Ptolemaic regime, they periodically demonstrated their dissatisfaction by open revolts, all of which were, however, quickly suppressed.Ancient Egypt tour travel package visit trips places cairo nile luxor aswan pyramids temple history day tours sightseeing Alexandria

Syria Information (aleppo, Arwad, Bosra, Damascus, Hama, Homs, Palmyra, Tartus, Palmyra, Latakia..) Posted By: www.etltravel.com

The name of Syria comes from the ancient Greek name for the land of Aram at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea between Egypt and Arabia to the south and Cilicia to the north, stretching inland to include Mesopotamia, and having an uncertain border to the northeast that Pliny the Elder describes as including from west to east Commagene, Sophene, and Adiabene, "formerly known as Assyria" (N.H. 5.66). By Pliny's time, however, this larger Syria had been divided into a number of smaller regions: "Palestine" (formerly known as Israel, now the states of Israel and Jordan) in the extreme southwest, Phoenicia along the coast, with Damascena to the inland side of Phoenicia, Coele-Syria (or "Hollow Syria") north of the Eleutheris river, and Mesopotamia. Geographical Syria: located at the meeting point among the Africa, Asia and Euope makes an important stop point for all travelers. The strategic importance of Syria is due to its unique position at the meeting point of three continents, Asia, Africa and Europe, and at the crossroads between the Caspian Sea, the Black Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Nile.syria syria information aleppo arwad bosra damascus

Palmyra: A Brief History Posted By: Archie Blazer

If you thought that there is hardly anything of interest in the desert, then visit the Syrian city of Palmyra. The desert is not all about sand and sun, although these have their own kinds of attractions, instead of things to be dreaded. Palmyra was an ancient city whose magnificence you will clearly see from its ruins.

Some of the first things that will get your attention are the columns of the pillars of the ancient city, which resemble an army standing at attention for a guard of honor. The pillars are the remnants of the ancient Roman city with a great history behind it. The resilience and appearance of the pillars seem to symbolize the historic reign of Queen Zenobia.

Palmyra is a unique city in the middle of the dessert, which seems to be cut off from the rest of the world. Sand spanning for about 100 kilometers separate it from the Valley of Orontes on the western side. Towards the east, the sand stretches for more than 200 kilometers before ending at the banks of the great Euphrates river.Vacation Travel

Damascus - The Oldest Continuously Inhabited City Posted By: Archie Blazer

Damascus, the capital city of Syria, has a long history and is known as the oldest city in the world that has continuously been inhabited by people.

The origin of the name has been controversial. According to some people, the term 'damashaq' means a swift camel and the city was so named because its construction happened quite fast. Some people believe that the city was named after the great grandson of Noah, Damashaq, from the line of his son Sam. The arguments come from the belief that Damashaq was the one who founded the city. There is still another school of thought that states that it was the Romans who called the city Dumuskus, meaning double musk. Some people also said that the name was coined from either dersauk or Dermask, which may be loosely translated to red land.

These are just a few of the numerous versions given as to the origin of the name Damascus. This only goes to show the great interest that the city inspires. The city has a rich culture and traditions. When you visit Damascus, you will have a better understanding of how the people of the region lived some centuries back.Vacation Travel

The Meteoric Rise Of The Fashion Accessory Posted By: catsuit

A blast of novelty - in everything from sandals to satchels - has made for irresistible items; just consider the notorious designer boutique waiting lists. New shapes and styles plus a fresh feminine attitude have also given women a reason to buy. Because, let's face it, how many AND #160; or shoes does one actually need?

Although here at home designers are merely dabbling with accessories, today's real breadwinners are those setting the runways ablaze, not with their clothes necessarily, but withtheir accoutrements.

With her haute but quirky take on ladylike essentials such as the bowling- purse, UGG Soldes AND #160; has fuelled her company's shoe and leather-goods divisions. According to results published recently in fashion trade journal Women's Wear Daily, these areas account for a hefty 77 per cent of the fashion behemoth's annual sales figures. Similarly at Gucci, leather goods and footwear designs with the sex appeal of the steel stiletto shoe of 1997, have spiked sales to 56 per cent of business totals.

To battle, Americans such as New York's big three - Ralph, Donna and Calvin - are reportedly infusing their accessory divisions with cash and energy.

Idyllic Summer Holidays - Cyprus Posted By: Henry Ashworth

There's plenty of islands in the Mediterranean to choose from for a holiday, and with over two million tourists annually, Cyprus is the holiday island of choice for many.

Cyprus is the third largest of the Mediterranean group. The island is favored not only for its fabulous climatic conditions, but also her wonderful history.

Historically, Cyprus has one of the most intriguing pasts of most Mediterranean countries. This historic past is in many ways still very evident in the architect and sites. The historic intermingling of Egyptians and Byzantine cultures provides a unique mix hard to find anywhere else. Signs and relics of the various conquerors who set foot in Cyprus at one time or another still remain today.

One of the most interesting and must-see historic relics is the prehistoric settlement of Choirokoitia. This Neolithic settlement is viewed as one of the most important of its kind in Europe and possibly the world.
Choirokoitia is believed to have been occupied from the 7th to 4th century B.C. This site has much to offer now and in the future, as not all of it has as yet been dug.Cyprus history holidays summer vacations

A Woman Driven To Success Posted By: Pat Marcello

Zenaida Lorenzo...

An interesting name, derived from Zenobia, Queen of the wealthy city of Palmyra in the Arabian Desert, and in Latin, a feminine form of "Zeus." Indeed a powerful name, but quite appropriate for an incredibly self-driven woman, rather adequately described by the words "motivation" and "prosperity." Zenaida was the #1 earner in her home business in 2005, though she didn't start off with a silver spoon, didn't have the best education, and generally had a rough time just living as she grew up.

Zenaida began life in an ethnic neighborhood, primarily Puerto Rican like Zenaida herself, in Dover, New Jersey. The family was so poor that there were a few times when she went hungry and had to wear the same clothes to school more than once. It didn't seem to matter then, as many of the families in her school had similar problems. Poverty was a way of life.

"Welfare was much better then," Zenaida remembers. But she can still recall coming home to a bare cupboard at times. School trips were out, because there was no money for them. There just wasn't money for anything, and many times, not enough for food.profile leadership self-help
