There are three different types of diabetic comas have been identified as follows:

1.Severe diabetic hypoglycemia. This means that the blood glucose levels have become too low for the body to properly function, resulting in the automatic shutdown of many physical processes. The signs include paleness, rapid heart rate, excessive sweating as a result of the body releasing adrenaline to counteract the symptoms of hypoglycemia. Breathing is shallow and this can be reversed through injection of glucagon to normalize blood sugar levels.

2.Diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a complication of diabetes that when left untreated results in unconsciousness because of the combination of severe hyperglycemia, dehydration, shock and exhaustion. This means that the body has too much blood sugar that the liver goes on overdrive to expel the excess levels and without any fluids retained in the body. External signs include flushed skin color, rapid deep breathing, dehydration and these would eventually reverse when nearing comatose condition.
