Dick Turpin England’s Most Celebrated Highwayman

In the wilds of the Essex countryside Dick Turpin lived rough and survived by joining a band of smugglers. During this time his wife would bring him money and food. He later moved into Epping Forest, which then covered a huge area and was much favoured by royalty for hunting deer. He fell in with an already notorious band of rustlers – the Essex Gang or Gregory Gang, and joined them in the highly risky business of stealing deer and horses. This crime, in a royal forest, was considered to be committed against the monarch personally and was punishable by death.

Such was the notoriety of the gang that in 1735, when Dick Turpin was 30, George II offered the kingly reward of £50 for their capture. Not long after, the gang carried out a raid at Loughton and three of the ringleaders were apprehended, tried and hanged as common criminals. The remainder drifted away. Only Turpin and one other thief, Thomas Rowden, continued with their unlawful activities, and decided on a career change. They began to rob stagecoaches. **End Summary** Topics: the york dungeon the york dungeon discounts York Attracti
About the Author:
Roman garrison, Viking battleground, part time plague pit and hangman’s heaven, the northern city of York has a colourful past.
Get more from Dopplr by inviting people you know to become fellow travellers

Dopplr is a service for the smart traveller, and at its heart is the concept of travel planning and sharing plans with people you trust. Consequently, the more people you connect with on Dopplr, the more useful the service becomes.

Dopplr is all about spotting the co-incidences that might otherwise be overlooked. It knows where you are going to be, and when; and it knows where your fellow travellers are going to be, and when. It can see those co-incidences and point them out, without individuals having to sit down and compare notes on every single trip.

So it makes sense to open up your travel planning activity to as many people as possible. Dopplr has made it easy to do this.

The first way to add more fellow travellers is simply to invite people you already know. From your account home page, click "Invite", and you can fill out a simple form with the name and email address of the person you wish to invite. You can add a short text note as well. **End Summary** Topics: business travel travel tips travel advice travel plan sm
About the Author:
Dopplr is a service for smart travellers.

Dopplr is an excellent source of travel tips and a good way of doing travel planning, but not all of your friends, colleagues and

contacts will be fellow travellers, or regularly viewing your Dopplr profile.

That's why we created the Dopplr blog badge - a simple tool that displays your Dopplr travel plans on other web sites you own or

manage, such as blogs and personal home pages.

The blog badge works on almost any web site. You will need to have access to the management system of the site, so that you can paste

in a short snippet of HTML. Most blogging services make this an easy task.

The badge is easy to set up. From your Dopplr home page, click "Your account". Under the "Using Dopplr elsewhere" heading, you'll see

a link saying "Blog badge". Click this to get started.

The first step is simply to activate the badge. One click and this is done. Click "Save changes" to move on to the second step.

Now you can customise some aspects of the badge. You can choose to only display the badge to fellow travellers. **End Summary** Topics: business travel travel tips travel planning travel a
About the Author:

Share your travels past and present, with the Dopplr public profile

Every Dopplr traveller can see a summary of their recent travels on their personal home page on the site, but this information is otherwise hidden from everyone else. Sometimes, it's nice to share.

That's why we created the Dopplr public profile, a feature available to every smart traveller using Dopplr for travel planning.

The public profile can be activated from your Dopplr account page at any time. The profile is a flexible, customisable web page that's open to all, not just fellow travellers on Dopplr. It can be used to display a great deal of information, or very little information at all - depending entirely on the traveller's wishes.

The profile is divided into four sections. The first is "About you", and can be set to display information about a traveller's home city, home page on the internet, forthcoming trips, travel statistics, and travel tips. There's also an option here to hide the profile from search engines.

The second section is called "Past travel". Display options here include past trips, notes on trips, accurate or approximate dates, maps, photos, and places from the Social Atlas.

The third section is "Planned travel". **End Summary** Topics: Dopplr is a service for smart travellers.
Cheyne Capital Appoints Two Partners for Macro Equities Team

Cheyne launched its first fund in 2000 and today manages net assets of approximately $6 billion across a diversified suite of products. Cheyne currentlyemploys approximately 170 people with its primary offices in London, New York, and Bermuda.

Cheyne Capital Management has appointed two new partners: Paul Ruddleston and Paul Keohane, who were previously managing directors at Morgan Stanley. Paul Ruddleston and Paul Keohane join from Morgan Stanley where they worked for a combined 26 years, much of which as managing directors. Alongside former colleague and head portfolio manager Jorge Giampaoli, who joined Cheyne in June, they will be managing the Cheyne Equity Macro Fund employing a liquid, macro-based trading strategy.

The pair have been recruited to broaden the team managing the Cheyne Equity Macro fund, which launched earlier this year under the lead management of their former colleague Jorge Giampaoli. Giampaoli joined Cheyne from Morgan Stanley in June to head up the fund, which follows a short-term, macro-based equity trading strategy.

Ruddleston headed the global market trading strategy unit at Morgan Stanley, working with the firm's principal market risk takers and with key clients across all asset classes. **End Summary** Topics: cheyne capital
About the Author:
Cheyne Capital is one of Europe"'s leading alternative asset managers.
Become a smart traveller and boost your social network with Dopplr on Facebook.

Dopplr is great for travel planning, but how can a smart traveller use it alongside other web sites and social networks? Dopplr was built from the start to make this easy. Connections to services like Flickr, XING and Facebook are built-in. Let's take a look at Facebook in detail.

In Facebook, users can add apps to their profiles; these apps can do all sorts of things, some useful and some just for fun.

The Dopplr: Where Next? app is one of the more useful ones. Once activated, it inserts a Dopplr profile box on your Facebook home page, showing your current location and an outline of your planned trips.

When you go travelling, the Dopplr app updates your Facebook feed, so that all your Facebook friends can see where you're going and when.

Facebook also works as part of the Dopplr Social Network subscription. That means that when you connect to someone on Facebook, Dopplr will automatically check to see if that person is a Dopplr traveller. If they are, you'll get the chance to share your trips with them on Dopplr.

The app also gives you access to a list of all your Facebook friends who are Dopplr travellers. **End Summary** Topics: business travel travel tips travel advice travel plan sm
About the Author:
Dopplr is a service for smart travellers.
Exchange travel tips with fellow smart travellers on XING

XING is one of the biggest professional networks in Europe, with over seven million members. Smart travellers can now connect their Dopplr account to XING, to get more from both.
Anyone whose work involves frequent business travel will appreciate the connection between the two services. XING is all about managing relationships in a business context. It is a useful way of finding new contacts, sourcing business opportunities, finding employees, and even getting a new job. XING knows the skills and experience that every member can offer, and helps its members find connections that they might otherwise have missed.
Dopplr does a similar thing for travel planning. Dopplr’s smart travellers have their own ideas about the travel advice that might be useful for them, and because they travel frequently, they find it useful to know where their friends and business colleagues are going to be. Dopplr spots those easily-missed co-incidences where two or more people will be in roughly the same place at roughly the same time. It alerts travellers to the co-incidences and helps them get in touch at the right moment. **End Summary** Topics: Dopplr smart traveller travel advice travel tips xing
About the Author:
Dopplr is a service for smart travellers.
Travel tips and travel planning in your pocket: introducing Dopplr for iPhone

Over the past couple of years, these travellers have been helping Dopplr to build a thing they call "the Social Atlas". It is the combined wisdom of these frequent travellers, people who know a good hotel, a nice restaurant, and an interesting place to explore when they see one.

Wherever anyone is in the world, he/she can call up his/hers current location and find the nearest places that Dopplr travellers have recommended. If the person is hungry, open the app and find a cafe. If he/she is tired, it will help him/her locate the nearest hotel. And if the person has got time to kill, find something interesting to see or experience.
The app is not just a view of the atlas, it is also a means of adding new places to the database. By just tapping the blue locator, it would allow people to enter the details of the fantastic new bar they are standing in. Travel tips are added to what Dooplr know already, and automatically shared with fellow travellers.

People do not even need to be on Dopplr to use the iPhone app. **End Summary** Topics: Dopplr smart traveller travel advice travel tips Iphone
About the Author:
Dopplr is a service for smart travellers.
Visit any bookstore and it's easy to find a dozen or more guidebooks for any one of the world's major cities. Dopplr's Social Atlas is a guidebook unlike any other the information within it has been compiled by the smart travellers who share their trips with others on Dopplr.

In addition to trips, they can share the discoveries they make along the way. They are able to add travel tips about places to eat, stay, and explore that might not have caught the attention of the publishers of printed guidebooks.

Dopplr travellers add hundreds of new places every week, and we aggregate and anonymise the information they send in. Looking at the data as a whole, we can start to see patterns emerging and that's the true power of the Social Atlas.

It means we can pinpoint the cool cafes, hip shopping streets, gourmet restaurants and fashionable bars that people have discovered in the last few months. We can see where people are choosing to spend a night, be it in a tiny backstreet guest house or in the grandest of five-star hotels. **End Summary** Topics: business travel travel tips travel planning travel advice
About the Author:
Dopplr is a service for smart travellers.
Digital Influencers Share Travel Plans Before They Make Them

Dopplr, the online service for smarter travel, today shared the results of its recent research into the travel patterns and preferences of the world's best-connected frequent travellers. Two insights stand out in the research:

- First, how early in the decision process digital influencers share their travel plans. When people share a trip through Dopplr, 2/3 have not yet booked a hotel and half have not made any travel arrangements at all (e.g. plane or train reservations).
- Second, the importance of recommendations in key travel decisions. Over 95% of digital influencers claimed to be strongly or slightly influenced by recommendations in their choice of hotels and restaurants.

Other key findings of the study include:

- Dopplr travellers prefer unique travel experiences with over 40% going for boutique hotels when they travel, and 25% choosing a trusted chain
- Dopplr travellers are highly educated, and compared to traditional frequent travellers they are younger, earn more, and travel more often

Dopplr may have the most international social graph of any social network. Over half the people on Dopplr share trips with a person from another country. **End Summary** Topics: Travel planning travel plan business travel travel tip s
About the Author:
Dopplr is a service for sharing personal and business travel plans privately with the people you trust.
