History: Continued

Popular in some parts of England in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, auction by candle was the preferred method for the sale of goods and leaseholds. The auction began with the lighting of a candle at which point bidding began. The process continued until the candle finally extinguished itself. The highest bid secured at this point won the auction. It was used from about 1490 to 1893 and is sometimes used even today in ceremonial events. After 1674, it was gradually replaced by the English auction. Both types of auction are ascending open auctions.

The Stockholm Auction House was established in 1674 in Sweden and is widely regarded as the worlds oldest auction house.

Shortly after the end of the French Revolution in 1799, auctions came to be held in taverns, now referred to as public houses, and coffee houses, similar to a café, with the purpose of selling art. These types of auctions were held on a daily basis, and catalogues were printed to make known the items that were available for sale. Such catalogues were normally printed and distributed before auctions of rare or collectible items, such as art, jewellery, postage stamps, and antique furniture. **End Summary** Topics: auctions open auctions auction by candle sale goods tav
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
Online Marketing: Continued

In recent years, there has been a huge increase in the volume of articles written online with the intent of having them submitted for possible publishing. This can be a very cost effective form of advertising since, invariably, the cost to the author is zero.

Writing an article and presenting it online a few at a time has now been replaced by submissions involving hundreds, and even thousands of articles from a single author.
The publishers of these articles certainly benefit. In fact, that they can add Adsense contextual ads to each submission and therefore receive a corresponding income. Accordingly, the more articles they receive from authors, the greater their projected income. It is for this reason that publishers make every effort to encourage authors to submit ever more articles. There is evidence to indicate that one highly prolific article writer has written and submitted 12,900 articles.

A further benefit of generating such huge volumes of online articles is that the author will receive abundant backlinks, which are incoming links to a website from another website. The number of backlinks that a website receives represents the popularity or importance of that website. **End Summary** Topics: articles online publishing backlinks incoming advertisi
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.

Signs and Symptoms

A lump that appears in the breast that feels at variance with the surrounding breast tissue is typically the first symptom or indication of the presence of breast cancer.

The prestigious Merck Manual has indicated that, in the vast majority of breast cancer cases, it is the woman herself who first discovers the presence of a lump. The first medical indication of breast cancer, as stated in the reviews of the American Cancer Society, is usually discovered when the patient is subjected to a mammogram upon the advice of her doctor. Another indicator of breast cancer is the presence of hardened tissue found in the lymph nodes located under the armpits or in the region of the collarbone.

Alterations in the size or shape of the breast, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or discharge from a nipple may be regarded as alternative indications of the presence of breast cancer. The incidence of pain is not a reliable determinant for the presence of the cancer. Such an observation may in fact be more indicative of other breast related issues such as mastodynia. **End Summary** Topics: breast cancer breast cancer signs symptoms lump mammog
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
Brand Management

Types of Brand: Part 1

There are, in fact, many different types of brands each with its own recognisable features. The following characterises the essential features:

A Premium Brand - Compared with other products in the same category, the price is pitched at a premium. The age group that is identified more than any other with premium brands is that of the 30-65 grouping. Furthermore, this age sector continues to increase in its receptiveness.

An Economy Brand - This is a brand that is targeted, which means that it is focusing on a specific market rather than following the marketing strategy of mass marketing, to a high price elasticity market segment. The price elasticity of demand is a measure of how the quantity demanded is affected by changes in price. It is measured as elasticity. Water is an example of a product that has inelastic demand in that people will pay anything for it. Conversely, sugar is very elastic since, as the price of sugar increases, people will turn to other products, such as saccharin, which are treated as sugar substitutes. **End Summary** Topics: brand branding premium brand economy brand fighting bran
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.

Types

There is a wide variety in the types of blogs. Such differences may relate to either the subject material of the blog or the manner in which such content is presented or the style in which it is written. Consider the following:

Personal Blogs - This takes the form of a continuously updated diary or commentary, usually by an individual, and is the traditional, most widespreadly used type of blog. Such bloggers tend to put a lot of effort into their blog posts, which is another name for a blog entry, even if their posts are never read by anyone but themselves.

In this way, blogs often become more than just a way to relate to the outside world. In some cases, Blogging can emanate a sentimental quality. It is an accepted fact that few personal bloggers acquire fame and notoriety. However, some personal blogs develop a loyal following.

A specialised form of personal blog is that which is referred to as microblogging. This is an extremely detailed style of blogging since it seeks to capture a particular moment in time and record it for posterity.

Other sites include Twitter, which is a free social networking and microblogging site. **End Summary** Topics: blogging personal blog blog posts microblogging twitter
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.

Recent History

Greek and Roman artists have provided the basis and also set the standard by which male beauty in western civilization can be measured.

Accordingly, the ideal Roman male was defined as tall, muscular, long-legged, with a full head of thick hair, a high and wide forehead a sign of intelligence wide-set eyes, a strong brow-line, a strong perfect nose and profile, a smaller mouth, and a strong jaw line.

A combination of these characteristics would give rise to an impressive and commanding look depicting an aura of handsome masculinity.

The desirability of a beauty ideal may be a harbinger for racial oppression. Accordingly, there is a well established notion in American society that black features are less attractive or desirable than white features. The perception that all that was black was inherently ugly was highly damaging to the psyche of African Americans, manifesting itself as internalised racism, in which members of marginalised groups hold an oppressive view toward their own group, or start to believe in negative stereotypes of themselves.

It was for this reason that the black is beautiful" cultural movement set out to dispute this idea. **End Summary** Topics: beauty male beauty handsome masculinity racial oppressio
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.

1970s Onwards

In 1977, the film Pumping Iron, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the famous bodybuilder, was released. This gave the sport a huge publicity boost.

At about this time the IFBB, the International Federation of Bodybuilders, were the pre-eminant force in the sport. Conversely, the AAU, the sports alternative governing body, took a back seat. In 1981, the National Physique Committee, or NPC, was established. Since then, the NPC has established itself as the most successful bodybuilding organisation in the U.S. It is also recognised as the amateur division of the IFBB.

There was a large reduction in the AAU sponsored bodybuilding contests during the late 1980s and early 1990s. In fact, in 1999, the AAU voted to withdraw completely from bodybuilding events.

This was the era in which anabolic steroids were being widely used in bodybuilding and a variety of other sports. Certain chemicals, such as the hormone testosterone, are particularly effective for building muscles. Tests to detect doping, which refers to the use of performance enhancing drugs, were then introduced by the IFBB for both steroids and other banned substances. In this way, the IFBB retained its membership of the IOC, or International Olympic Committee. **End Summary** Topics: body building bodybuilders anabolic steroids hormones t
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.Body Building Articles cover Early Years, 1970+, Types of Exercise, Competitions, Diet, Training.

Aviation - How To Succeed Part 2

Recent History

During the 1920s and 1930s, there was a huge leap forward in the field of aviation. Noteworthy milestones included Charles Lindbergh"s transatlantic flight in 1927, and Charles Kingsford Smith"s transpacific flight the following year.

Without doubt, the most successful design of this period was the Douglas DC3, which became the first airliner to carry passengers profitably, and ushered in a new era in passenger airline service.

By the beginning of the Second World War, many towns and cities had built airports, and there were many eager and qualified pilots available. There were many new innovations in aviation, including the first jet aircraft and the first liquid-fueled rockets, which were the result of research generated during WW2.

There was a boom in aviation, in both the private and commercial sectors, after the war, in particular in North America. This was due, in no small part, to the thousands of pilots who became available from the military, and the plethora of inexpensive war-surplus transport and training aircraft which became available. Manufacturers such as Cessna, Piper, and Beechcraft rapidly expanded production in order to provide a ready supply of light aircraft for the new middle class market. **End Summary** Topics: aviation aircraft airliners airports pilots jet liquid
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
Audio Streaming - How To Succeed Part 2

Protocol Issues

Designing a network protocol which supports streaming media can be quite involved.

The following issues are noteworthy:
Protocols called Datagram, such as the User Datagram Protocol, send the media stream as a series of small components of data. Although this is simple and efficient, the protocol does not contain any provision to guarantee delivery of the data stream. In fact, the onus is placed on the user to detect any loss or corruption in the data, and to reinstate such data using error correction methods. If some of the data is lost, the media stream may incur what is called a dropout.

The following protocols have been particularly designed to deliver streaming media over networks:
Real-time Streaming Protocol, Real-time Transport Protocol, and the Real-time Transport Control Protocol.

Dependable protocols, such as the Transmission Control Protocol, ensure the correct delivery of each bit in the media stream. However, in order to achieve this, they use a system of timeouts and retries, which makes them more complex to implement. **End Summary** Topics: audio streaming audio streaming multimedia protocols ne
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.

History

A bronze sculpture of "Artemis and the Stag," reputed to date from the Roman-era, was sold, in 2007, at Sotheby's in New York for US$28.6 million. Such a price, which surpassed all pre-auction estimates, produced a new record in so much as it represented the most expensive sculpture ever sold at auction.

One of the most popular pieces at most art sales are items of porcelain. Christie's sold for £15.68 million, in 2005, a piece of Chinese porcelain dating from the 14th century. Such was this sale that it produced a world record for any ceramic work of art sold at auction.

The derivation of the term "auction" comes from the Latin aug"re, which means "to increase" or "augment".

Throughout history, auctions have not been the favoured way of negotiating the sale and purchase of goods and commodities. Apart from the sale by a pre-determined price, by far the most popular method has been that of the age-old art of haggling, which refers to the process of negotiating the price of an item with a view to securing a better deal than the stated price. **End Summary** Topics: auction haggling uses selling liquidate assets bidder
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
Development

An infant between 12 months and 36 months old exhibits a number of changes that form part of its process of development. The following series of observations focuses on that particular time span, and highlights those changes that may be classified as a milestone. It will consider what may be defined as an average child covering specific time periods within this development phase.

Age - 18 to 24 Months

Physical

The child should now have moved on from drinking from a cup to the act of holding a spoon and being able to feed itself in a rudimentary manner.

The ability of being able to walk unaided should now have progressed to actually running, the distance and speed increasing with confidence.

The mastery of scrambling up onto low-lying pieces of furniture will now have moved on to the ability to climb up onto a small chair with confidence.

The feat of being able to move beyond ground level, such as onto a chair, may provide the impetus to make tentative steps of mounting the stairs, initially at home. **End Summary** Topics: infant baby toddler development physical mental emotio
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects. Climate - 2

Florida is known throughout the world as the "Sunshine State." However, severe weather is not uncommon across the state. A case in point is that of central Florida which has the unfortunate nickname of the lightning capital of the United States. This is because the area is subject to more lightning strikes than any other part of the US.

Between late spring and early autumn, most of the state experiences regular afternoon thunderstorms with the result that Florida has the highest average rainfall of any state in the US. A pleasant, sunny day may suddenly be subjected to a thunderstorm and then, an hour or so later, the sunshine returns.

Such thunderstorms are caused when moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean collide overland. Such occurances normally take place in the early afternoon and can be associated with heavy downpours, high winds, and sometimes even tornadoes. It is for this reason that Florida gives rise to more tornadoes than any other state in the US. However, the intensity of Floridian tornadoes rarely matches those in the Midwest and Great Plains. **End Summary** Topics: florida climate severe sunshine lightning thunderstorms
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects. Early Property Boom

In the 1920s, Florida experienced its first taste of land and property speculation, which led to a land boom. The bubble finally burst in 1925.

Leading up to the 1920s, the states economic fortunes had been on a steady uptrend. This was particularly true of Miami which, by now, exuded an image tantamount to a tropical paradise. Accordingly, investors and speculators from across the United States were drawn by the spectre of easy money by way of Miami real estate. The market was further ignited by pragmatic developers who embarked on aggressive advertising campaigns using illuminated billboards. Unsurprisingly, property prices began to rise steadily accompanied by a development boom.

Everything seemed to be rosy in the garden until, in January 1925, the influential Forbes magazine ran a series of articles in which they cautioned that property prices in Florida appeared to be based on appeasing pent-up demand rather than realistic land valuations. Warning bells finally began to ring in the minds of investors when not only New York bankers but also the IRS began delving deeply into what had surely become a Florida real estate boom. **End Summary** Topics: florida land property boom bubble tropical paradise
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
FLORIDA

Introduction

The State of Florida may be found in the south eastern portion of the United States. Its position is such that it borders on Alabama in the northwest and Georgia in the northeast. The land mass of the state constitutes a peninsula, surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico in both the west and south, and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. In terms of climate, most of the state is subtropical and humid, whilst the southern portion is distinctly tropical. With respect to population, Florida is the fourth highest state in the US.

Urbanisation

The state of Florida consists of 20 metropolitan areas, referred to as MSAs. Florida state is made up of sixty seven counties, of which thirty nine are contained within an MSA. Further, most of the Metropolitan areas within the state are centred in or around the coastal region of the peninsula. Such a disposition is in direct relation to the population distribution in Florida.

These MSAs take the form of a continuous band down the east coast of the state and extend from the Jacksonville MSA to the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach MSA. **End Summary** Topics: florida state geography peninsula climate subtropical
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.

Overview

When a group of cells display uninhibited growth, which refers to division beyond the normal limits, this phenomenon is commonly referred to as cancer. Other characteristics include an attack and destruction of surrounding tissues, and the spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood, which is known as metastasis.

These malignant, which refers to a severe and progressively worsening disease, properties of cancers differentiate them from benign tumors, which are self-limited and do not invade or metastasise.

A tumor refers to a swelling or lesion formed by an unusually high growth of cells and occurs with most cancers. However, some, like leukemia, do not produce tumors.

Breast cancer becomes established, initially, in the cells of the breast in men and women. On a worldwide basis, the second most established form of cancer, after lung cancer, is that of breast cancer. It represents 10% of all cancers relating to both sexes. It is the fifth most common cause of cancer death.

The most common type of cancer specifically related to women, globally, is that of breast cancer. **End Summary** Topics: breast cancer cancer metastasis breast malignant tumor
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
Brand Management

Overview

The application of marketing methods in respect of a particular product, range of products, or a specific brand is commonly referred to as Brand management. Its role is to increase the product's perceived value in the eyes of the customer, and at the same time increase the strength of the brand and its brand equity, which refers to the benefits associated with a product that has a particular brand name as compared with the benefits that the same product would achieve if it did not have that brand name.

A brand is regarded as being synonymous with a product whose quality, effectiveness and desirability is perceived by the customer to be maintained no matter how often the product is purchased. The purpose is to increase sales by increasing the profile and desirability of the product in relation to competitive products. An associated benefit is that the manufacturer may feel able to increase the price of the product.

A brands value can be assessed in a number of ways, but a particularly pertinent method is the level of profits that it can generate for the manufacturer. **End Summary** Topics: branding brand manager brands brand loyalty brand effect
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
Overview

The word blog is a shortened version of the term "Web log". Essentially, it is a website, which itself is a collection of Web, or internet pages, images, videos or other digital forms that reside on one or more web servers, which control the images, and are accessible via the internet.

A blog is normally set up and run by an individual, and often for his own personal satisfaction. Entries are added to the blog, on a regular basis, in the form of personal anecdotes, descriptions of particular events, together with other material, such as graphics or video, which will enhance the impact and appeal of his posts.

The entries themselves are commonly displayed with the first entry being available at the end, and newer entries being added before it. Many blogs provide an ongoing discussion, or act as an update for news on a general or specialised subject. Others, however, function as more of a personal diary that is placed on the internet for possible broader interaction.

A blogs characteristic structure combines mostly text, and sometimes has additional images. There are some that have links to blogs or other web sites whose content is on similar subjects. **End Summary** Topics: blogging blog website internet diary text images hous
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
Beauty - How To Succeed

Overview

The concept of Beauty can refer to a particular person, a special place, an object of interest or even the concept of an idea, all of which can provide a perceptual experience related to pleasure, meaning or satisfaction.

The study of beauty is intrinsically a part of aesthetics, sociology, social psychology and culture. In the form of a cultural creation, beauty has become extremely commercialised.

The characterisation of an "ideal beauty" is represented in a person who is admired, or possesses features widely associated with beauty in a particular culture. There are many historical figures that have come to personify beauty itself, such as Cleopatra, Helen of Troy, and Marilyn Monroe. The subjective experience, which refers to the sensory buzz and awareness associated with a perceptive mind, related to "beauty", often involves the interpretation of some entity as being as one and in harmony with nature, which may lead to feelings of attraction and emotional well-being.

Beauty, as expressed by the popular saying, is in the eye of the beholder. **End Summary** Topics: beauty definition perceptual aesthetics culture ideal b
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
Babies And Toddlers - How To Succeed

Insight

A baby may be referred to as an infant at the earliest stage in its development, in particular before the walking phase is reached. In essence, it applies to an infant who is less than one year old.

An infant that is less than one month old is referred to as a newborn baby or a neonate. Once an infant has begun to walk, or around the age of one year, it is then referred to as a toddler.

Overview

The term toddler is commonly applied to a young child who is in the process of learning to walk, or toddle. This phase is generally regarded as representing the second stage in the childs development, that of infancy being the first. This stage is normally reached between the ages of 12 months and 36 months.

During this second stage, the child rapidly develops the social skills required as well as the ability to move itself about. Prior to toddling, an unsteady form of walking, the child may go through the instinctive motions of trying to walk whilst holding onto nearby objects for support. The development of this second phase can vary from one child to another. **End Summary** Topics: baby toddler infant child newborn neonate development
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
Bankruptcy - How To Succeed

Overview

Bankruptcy may be defined as the legally declared inability of an individual or organisation to pay their creditors, who represent a third party which supplied, to the individual or organisation, a product or service for which they are legally entitled to receive full settlement.

As part of a process called involuntary bankruptcy, a creditor may instigate bankruptcy proceedings against a debtor in order to secure the funds for which they are owed. However, in the majority of cases, such proceedings are not required. Under the auspices of a voluntary bankruptcy, the bankruptcy process is initiated by the debtor, which means that it is filed by the bankrupt individual or organisation.

History

In the Old Testament of the Bible and Hebrew Scriptures, the laws of Moses laid down that one Holy or Jubilee Year should take place every 50 years. Accordingly, on this day, all debts would be expunged from all Jews, and all debt slaves would be freed from their encumbrances, this being part of a heavenly command. **End Summary** Topics: bankruptcy involuntary bankruptcy voluntary bankruptcy cr
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.

History

Early Years

Bodybuilding has its roots in India in the 11th century when men would lift a specifically sized piece of stone in order to determine which of the participants had the greatest strength.

However, bodybuilding became established in the West sometime during the period 1880 to 1930. Bodybuilding may be described as the art of displaying ones muscles.

It did not really exist before the late 19th century, when it was brought to prominence by a Prussian called Eugen Sandow, who is now generally referred to as "The Father of Modern Bodybuilding". He is credited as being the founder of the sport since he was the first to present himself in front of an audience so that they could enjoy viewing his physique.

Although audiences enjoyed watching men with well-developed physique, these participants simply displayed their bodies as part of strength demonstrations or wrestling matches. On the other hand Sandow stage managed, with the help of his manager, an impressive show which was built to augment these displays.

He became so successful with his shows that he established several businesses and was among the first to market products based on his own brand name. **End Summary** Topics: body building keep fit developing muscles eugen sandow p
About the Author:

Overview

A baby, or infant, may be defined as a human child at the earliest stage of life. In particular, it refers to that period before they can walk, and essentially before they attain the age of one year.

The term "infant" is derived from the Latin in-fans, which means "unable to speak." Interestingly, there is no exact definition for the term infancy. "Infant" is also a legal term with the meaning of a minor, that is, any child under the age of legal adulthood.
In the case of a human baby less than one month old, it is referred to as a newborn baby or a neonate. When referring to a newborn child, this also includes the characterisation premature, post mature, and full term babies.

Around the age of one or at the stage where the child is beginning to walk, babies are subsequently referred to as toddlers. This stage of development is normally associated with the age group of 12-36 months.

Daycare centres, which contain facilities for babies, often describe all the children in their care as infants. Even when they are older than one year or may be walking, they sometimes use the term "walking infant". **End Summary** Topics: baby young baby newborn neonate infant premature baby
About the Author:
Peter Radford writes Articles with Websites on a wide range of subjects.
