Kathy Schweer doesn’t consider herself an expert in selling collectibles.

But on Wednesday she was trying to sell several valued items at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow at the Super 8 in Cape Girardeau.

While she didn’t sell her silver coins or toothpick holders like she had hoped, the Cape Girardeau resident received $35 for a chain purse.

I got more out of it than I thought I would,” said Schweer, who had never sold items at a similar show before. I’ve had it for several years, and when I saw the ad in the paper for the roadshow, I thought this would be a could time to see how much I could get for it.”

Since 1996, the Treasure Hunters Roadshow has visited more than 600 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. At each show local residents bring their antiques and collectibles to learn an associate’s estimate of its worth. If the seller agrees to sell the item to the associate, the item is then shipped to private collectors or its corporate office in Athens, Ill.

Our goal is for people to leave with a check,” said show manager Doug Feese. **End Summary** Topics: Treasure Hunters Roadshow
About the Author:
Matthew is one of the treasure hunters at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow.

By ALICIA SPATES - H&R Staff Writer

DECATUR - A penny was worth up to $2,500 to Decatur resident Jerry Morrison.

But according to Jeff Parsons, president of the Antique Treasure Hunter’s Roadshow, it’s not your average penny with Lincoln’s profile gracing one side.

This is the holy grail of penny collectors,” Parsons said of the 1909 S VDB Lincoln penny, describing it as being in good condition and with luster. Grading is everything.”

Morrison and other local residents brought in their valuables or items they thought could be valuable to the Antique Treasure Hunter’s Roadshow to be appraised Thursday.

Such items as toys, jewelry, paper currency and coins were brought to the experts of the roadshow at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel to find their worth and even sell on the spot. The road show will be available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Saturday at the hotel.

Morrison, who acquired his valuable penny along with other rare coins and paper currency from his late father, was adamant about not selling his coin to Parsons but appreciative of receiving an estimated value. **End Summary** Topics: Treasure Hunters Roadshow
About the Author:
Matthew is one of the treasure hunters at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow.
Buying Paintings: Synchromism

Synchromism paintings feature harmoniously balanced colors and a feeling of movement. It is believed that synchromist paintings evoke similar feelings and sensations as music. This is a basic tenet of the synchromism art movement. As such, these paintings make wonderfully pleasing additions to any modern art collection.

Founded in 1912 by Morgan Russell and Stanton MacDonald-Wright, synchromism was an art movement based no the idea that sound and color are phenomena that are similar in the way that the individual experiences and perceives them. Movement as well as organization of color into ‘color scalesâ€' are the ways in which synchromism pieces correlate to musical art forms.

A basic tenet of synchromism is that color can be arranged or orchestrated in much the same way that notes of a symphony are arranged by composers. This harmonious arrangement of colors and shapes produces experiential results similar to that of listening to well balanced orchestral compositions.

Artists of the synchromism art movement believed that by painting in color scales could evoke sensations that were very musical in nature. Typically, synchromism pieces feature a strong rhythmic form or forms that then advance toward complexity in form and hue, moving in a particular direction. **End Summary** Topics: Treasure Hunters Roadshow
About the Author:
Matthew is one of the treasure hunters at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow.
Buying Paintings: Realism

In literature as well as art realism is the depiction of subjects as they appear in practical, everyday life. Realism does not deal with interpretation or embellishment. The point of realism is to capture people or situations in a gritty and real way. Similar to realist photography, the realist painter does not place emphasis on stylization but is most interested in depicting situations just as they appear to the naked eye.

While realism depicts real characters in real situations, there tends to be emphasis placed on the sordid or ugly. In this way, realism is very much the opposite of idealism. In idealism the theory is that the reality and regular world around us is merely a reflection of a higher truth. With realism, however, it’s as though we’re saying all I know for sure is what my eyes and other sense organs tell me”.

As a reaction to the idealism of Romanticism in France during the middle of the nineteenth century, realism became the popular cultural movement in many ways. Realism is often linked to demands for political and social reform, as well as ideas about democracy. **End Summary** Topics: Treasure Hunters Roadshow
About the Author:
Matthew is one of the treasure hunters at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow.

The question arises when a company pays out to local residents in large and small cities country wide; Do I have to worry about a bounced check, or will my check bounce when I take it to the bank with the Treasure Hunters Roadshow? They are here for a week and then gone the next. Well we dug deeper into this question to find some answers.

We talked with hundreds of different sellers all attending the Treasure Hunters Roadshow events countrywide and asked a little about their experience and to see what happens AFTER the Roadshow has left and they have your items. Tony Steeles of Minnesota said that he had an extensive coin collection that he brought into the Treasure Hunters Roadshow and here is his comment, I was pretty skeptical at first because I have all these coins, I have waited for an hour and I kind of know what they are worth. After the expert reviewed my items they gave me an extremely fair offer almost double of what the pawn shops offered me. So I ended up selling and walked out with just a little over $4,000. **End Summary** Topics: Treasure Hunters Roadshow
About the Author:
Matthew is one of the treasure hunters at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow.
Art Auctions: Grotesque Artwork

That there is an overwhelming number of pieces that represent this particular grouping of artwork seems false to believe, but this is happens to be on the rise as we get further into the new millennium, and realize the shedding of our culture’s skins time and again. Grotesque artwork pulls us back into the human forms we have been born into, and truly seems to give us a reaffirming sense of who we are. There are many artists, though part of other artistic movements, which have proven to fill the criteria for this grouping of concepts.

Grotesque art from the past ranges from varying degrees of mood and theme, but always seem to draw from those factors that are widely considered by most to be taboo or dark in nature, adhering to some of the most brutal and thought-provoking events in history. All these things have come together to create a body of works that jump between particular eras, but seem interrelated in the subject matter that they portray, creating works that define the morbid attentions that we seem to take from our history as a whole. **End Summary** Topics: Treasure Hunters Roadshow
About the Author:
Matthew is one of the treasure hunters at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow.
Buying Paintings: Symbolism

Evoking a taste similar to the Romanticist tradition, but utilized mysticism and sensitivity through mythology and dream imagery, preceding the psychoanalytical work of Freud and Jung. With a strong philosophical touch, more so than a style of art, and Art Nouveau and Expressionist artists such as Edvard Munch. Beginning in France as a reaction to the movements of Naturalism and Realism, which seemed to capture the particular components of consensual reality, and presented spirituality and imagination reflecting some artists budding interest in religion and spirituality.

In literature, poet Charles Baudelaire was developing his work and the movement, and especially with such luminaries as Verlaine contributing to the collective effort of the literary movement during the 1860s and through to the 1870s. With the works of Edgar Allen Poe coming to popularity in the 1880s, the Symbolism movement in artwork represented an outgrowth into the darker and more gothic nature of Romanticism, and contrasted with Romanticism’s rebellious and impetuous sides. Symbolist writers wrote in very metaphoric and suggestive manner, to imbue the subjects with a sense of symbolic meaning, and made realistic images into representatives for more esoteric and primordial ideas. **End Summary** Topics: Treasure Hunters Roadshow
About the Author:
Matthew, is one of the treasure hunters at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow.
Buying Paintings : Romanticism

The Treasure Hunters Roadshow are looking at buying paintings that you may have sitting around the house. Art is such an expression of one's heart and passion. During the Romanticism period they had such a wonderful way to express their passion through paintings.
Though sometimes referred to as the "anti-classical" movement in art, Romanticism is a style that focuses on the artist's individualistic and emotionally wrought point of view, and is found to oppose the art movement known as Neoclassicism. Even though there have been many artists to combine elements of both. Some of the more renowned names around this movement, which utilized strong emotion to convey meaning, were Francisco de Goya and William Blake respectively. This particular art form became a reaction to the outgrowth of reason by homing in on imagination and feeling.
It is not difficult to see the value in the paintings by these artists, and there have been many examples of how other artists have influenced one another over time. As the whole category of Romanticism refers more to the trends of artists, poets, and philosophers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries than as much to an artistic movement. **End Summary** Topics: Treasure Hunters Roadshow
About the Author:
Matthew is one of the treasure hunters at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow.
