All though the blades are stamped from domestic steel and then hardened using proprietary heat treatment methods, the handles are carved from hand using many different materials. Columbia River Knife & Tool or(CRKT) started making knives in 1994. It's headquarters is located in Tualatin, Oregon. Even though they are located in the United states most of there knives are made in China or Taiwan. Columbia River Knife & Tool was founded by Rod Bremer, and Paul Gillespi. These two men use to work for Kershaw knives. The very controversial switchblade knife has been around a very long time. This blade is the size and shape of most of you average pocket knives but with a twist. With the push of a button a spring pops the blade out and is ready to be used. There are two sorts of switchblades one opens though the top, and one from the side. The blade that opens from the side is much like other pocket knives. You push the button and the blade swings out the side like any other knife. The out-the-front or the OTF switchblade, pops out the front as the name suggest. Single action, and double action are the two types of OTF blades. The single action is when you push the button and the blade pops out and then you have to manually push the blade back in. Survival knives are some of my favorite knives. These knives are used not surprisingly as tools for survival. People that might carry one of these knives are hunters, hikers, or any outdoor sports fan, Pilots in case of crashing, or if in the military being shop down behind enemy lines. Or for that matter any reason being behind enemy lines. Basically any one that might find them self?s lost in the woods. Survival knives are normally on the thicker heavier side for the reason that if you are lost in the woods, you would have to use them for hunting. Many people make them apart of a survival kit, people sometimes get a smaller lighter knife to save room for other things that might come in useful. But a survival knife is probable the most important thing that you could put in a survival kit. Other important things would be first aid and things to keep warm, food and water. Knives made to day are much more complex then the stone or even bronze knives of the past. With a wide variety of medals to make knives out of. Depending on the metal your knife will have very different strong points and weak points. If your knife is made out of carbon steel it will be able to get very sharp, and hold its edge for a long time. When it is no longer sharp it is very easily sharpened. On the down side carbon steel will rust and stain easily. Now stainless steel will not rust and stain as easily but will never be as sharp as the carbon steel. Knives start to look more like what we know as knives about five thousand years ago. This is when man started to understand how to work with metal. At this point knives where made out of copper, then bronze, iron, and now steel. These are the most popular of the manufactures. These are knives of great quality and can go from reasonably priced, to very high priced, and any where in between. But if you buy a knives from one of these manufactures it will be of good quality, and you will be more than happy with it.
