How Titanium Jewelry Invaded the Oscars

Oscar night is one of the biggest nights in Hollywood. For the elite in the movie industry this is not only the night where they award their own for excellence in cinema, but also show off their outfits and jewelry to their world. While females are usually the main attraction at the ceremonies with their cleavage bearing dresses and million dollar (plus) jewelry, men are not completely immune to the fashion bug. At the Oscars men show off their look with exclusive tuxedos and subtle- well, usually at least- jewelry which adorn their hands, necks and, sometimes, ears. While I tend to not notice men’s jewelry on celebrities, there was, for some reason, one piece that stood out to me. During the presentation of the Best Picture category, they showed a brief glimpse of Jeremy Renner who starred in the eventual Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker. During this glimpse I noticed that Renner was wearing one of those titanium rings which I’ve seen gaining in popularity in recent years. The Act of Melding Comfort and Fashion

The problem with sunglasses is sometimes style has a tendency to win over comfort and practibility. For example, have you ever had the choice between a really comfortable pair of polarized sunglasses and a pair that are a bit more stylish yet much more uncomfortable? Have you ever decided to choose the more stylish pair over the more comfortable ones because they were a bit more fashionable? Yeah, thought so. And don’t think I’m here to judge because I’ve done the exact same thing before. After about a week of these large awkward things on your face you realize that picking style over comfort was a really, really terrible idea. In a way companies have always been slow to blend comfort and practicality. I’m not just talking about sunglass companies; I’m talking about most companies. For women, we have had a history of fashion looking really good but being some of the least practical and comfortable things you could ever put on. A Proposal At McDonalds: Crazy or Brilliant?

I heard an interesting story the other day. Over lunch my friend told me the story about how her brother proposed to his girlfriend. The guy got down on his knee in front of a crowded restaurant and asked her for her hand. She cried, dabbed her eyes and said “Oh course”. They embraced and the whole restaurant broke out into applause. Sounds beautiful right? Well the way she told it is was. Of course, what she didn’t tell me until the end of this story was that the crowded restaurant was none other than a McDonalds. Commercial Lighting and Sports: Not As Mundane as You Might Think

A couple nights I went to a hockey game. One of my favorite things to do is watch sports live and to me there is nothing like watching a hockey game. There is something so awesome about the beauty and the force that you see on the ice. It’s a mix of toughness (both physical and mental), finesse, and luck all put together in a game that is played on the fastest sporting surface known to man. Of course, none of this would be possible at a live setting without the commercial lighting at the arena. I know, I know, it’s a mundane thing to think about: lighting. We take it completely for granted at sporting events. But without expert lighting we wouldn’t be able to watch our favorite team go out there night after night to beat their hated rivals. Are Olympic Medals a Piece of Mens and Womens Jewelry?

Is an Olympic medal a piece of jewelry? I know it’s more substantial then say a necklace you bought at Target, but does it qualify as a piece of mens jewelry or women’s jewelry because of its resemblance to a necklace? Maybe I’m just stretching, and I doubt that any athlete would ever wear it on a daily basis, but outside of something like the hope diamond, in my opinion an Olympic medal would be just about the coolest piece of jewelry you could ever wear. Imagine walking into a party with that thing on. Who wouldn’t be impressed? I write this as I’m watching the Opening Ceremonies of the Paralympic games in Vancouver. Here in the US the Paralympic Games aren’t exactly “Muse-see” TV. Regardless, it’s some of the best athletes in the world excelling at what they do best. It’s essentially the same format as the Olympics with gold, silver and bronze medals with each athlete proudly representing their country. The medals vary slightly from the Olympic ones but still have the basic round design. Lab Coats and Comedy

Lab Coats have a long history in the annals of comedy. Somebody, a long time ago, decided that a doctor in a lab coat could be just as funny as a clown in makeup or a straight-man wearing a suit. This is especially true for animated shows. For decades animated shows have cast doctors in the role of comedic fodder, usually as slightly inept professionals who are always there with a funny line or a comical diagnosis. For a perfect example of this type of character you have to look no further then Julius Hibbert, the resident physician at Springfield Hospital on the hit animated show The Simpsons. Modeled after Bill Cosby’s character on the Cosby Show, creators even went as far as to give Dr. Hibbert a pension for colorful sweaters and children who resemble Cosby’s on-screen progeny. Dr. Hibbert is a smart man, though he has a tendency to laugh even at the most tragic news. Most of his comedy comes from either comedic diagnosis, or clever one-liners, which vary form person to person. The Ever Expanding World of Live Video Streaming Services

I’m not afraid to admit that I’ve spent my fair share of time sitting in front of my computer recently intensely watching live coverage through my live video streaming services. During the recent Olympic games I spent at least three hours a day in front of my computer watching hockey, curling and skiing action (don’t hate, once you get into curling your hooked) live through the internet. This does not count the highlights I watched through the websites video sections. I’ve also become a big fan of watching live concert footage online. The AT&T Blue Room website has become a big force in the online concert world with full weekend coverage of such coveted music festivals as the Coachella Music & Arts Festival, Lollapalooza and The Bonarroo Festival. With their live streaming you can now see your favorite bands from the comfort of your own living room (and without having to spend $10 on a beer). Clogs and Curlers: A Match Made In Olympic Heaven?

Was it just me, or did the curling teams at the Olympics wear clogs. They weren’t like wooden clogs or medical clogs, but they were more like a dress clog. Like they almost looked like dress shoes but at the same time they were clogs. I’d never seen those before. I never would have guessed curlers wore any type of special footwear, though I’m guessing that when your playing a sport where you’re sliding on the ice with precision you would need something special. This got me thinking about what kind of shoes you would need to best maneuver on the ice. I know that curler wear a special type of rubber sole that they slip onto the bottom of the clogs when on the ice, but I’m guessing those don’t give you any special advantage. Essentially these rubber soles are so you don’t scuff up the ice, I’m guessing they don’t have much to do with giving the curler any extra advantage. The Beauty of Spring Training Baseball

When I was a kid my dad used to take me and my brother to spring training games down in Florida for the weekend. This was always a weekend of sun, fun, catching multiple games a day and meeting a lot of young players who would go on to be superstars. I came to treasure these times not only because it was great family time, but because it would ignite a lifelong love of spring training. It not only meant that the sun was coming out again, but that it was a new beginning for everyone in baseball. During the off-season you would always here about baseball players getting ready for the season. In the dark days of December you would read about their workout regimens, about how they would spend their mornings learning how to mix HCG, then going out to train at their indoor gym all afternoon long. I’m probably about to date myself, but do you remember that old comedy bit by George Carlin about “stuff”? High Speed Satellite Internet and the Future of Olympic Broadcasting

Yesterday I was reading an article on the history of Olympic television coverage. As some might know, the 1932 Olympics was the first television program to ever be broadcast using satellites. It wasn’t until the 1960’s when United States viewers started getting live coverage of the games. In the 1990’s, CBS started using additional cable outlet’s to give viewers more viewing opportunities for their winter Olympic broadcasts. Then in 2004, NBC took the next step and expended their coverage even more with 24 hour-a-day coverage on their family of cable networks. Now, in 2010, coverage has again expanded thanks to high speed satellite internet as many of the events are now being streamed live on the internet. For the Olympics, this seemed like the next logical step. For as much as the Olympic movement is steeped in tradition and aren’t as open to change as some might want it to be, they do love to update technologically. Commercial Lighting and the Winter Olympics

For the last four days I’ve done nothing but watch the Olympics. Day and night, the Olympics have dominated the television in my house. Get together’s have been canceled, dinners have been rearranged and my DVR has been cleaned out for the events that I miss. There is just something about the pageantry of it, and, more impressively for me, the entire massiveness of it. Just the commercial lighting that has to be utilized to light over a dozen venues for the fans is amazing. I know, I know, here are Olympic athletes giving there all for the chance at gold and I’m focusing on something as small as the “lighting”, but if you think about it its small stuff like this that has to be meticulously considered to put these games on. Imagine that it’s your job to figure out how to light a venue at the Olympics. Professional Clogs in the Medical Field

Professional clogs? When you read that, what immediately comes into your head? For me, when I first heard that phrase I automatically thought that they were a line of clogs for clogging competitions in Holland. There has to be some type of professional clogging league in Europe, right? I mean, I have no idea how they score it, but I’m sure they have some type of expensive clogs they buy from suppliers that give them superior clogging ability, right (I know, I know, I’m saying clogs a lot)? Well, not only are they comfortable for professionals who are on their feet all day, but they are also breathable while being stain resistant. Most clogs can be cleaned with either a cloth or a little spot of water. This is absolutely paramount for a doctor. What Is The Real Orange County?

What has Orange County, Ca. contributed to the entertainment landscape of the country? For most, Orange County is known as a place of riches and excess, full of beautiful Orange County jewelry and even more beautiful Orange County people. The reason for this idea? Television. While many residents might point out the many companies that call the OC home as well as industrial contributions and the many fine arts and cultural establishments that blankets the county, many people will never even consider any sort of sophistication because of what they have viewed on TV. While many people might point to the FOX show “The OC” for showing Orange County as a place of self-centeredness and excess, I would like to point out that the show actually featured well rounded characters who all seemed to have their hearts in the right place. Lab Coats = Sex Symbols?

When did wearing a lab coat make someone a sex symbol? I know your mother always wanted you to grow up and marry a doctor, but I never really grew up thinking that doctors were sex symbols. Lab coats are essentially work clothes developed to keep gross stuff off of a doctor. What’s sexy about someone who looks down people throats and has handwriting so terrible that you need some kind of amulet to decipher it. Apparently, in the past twenty years things have changed. Thanks mostly in part to TV shows the idea of doctors as sex symbols has gained much traction. It probably started with General Hospital. For those of you who have never watched the show, General Hospital is a long running ABC soap opera where a bunch of beautiful people work in a hospital. Typical soap opera stuff occurs in droves: lots of sexy doctors with their shirts off, lots of casual hookups, etc. The continuing popularity of soaps like General Hospital led to an explosion in prime time hospital dramas in the 1990s. Famously two hospital dramas premiered in the 1994-95 season. Moving? Make Sure You Make Your Big Purchases After You Move

I recently helped a friend move from an apartment to a house. In every group, there is always the “first” couple to make the leap from renting an apartment to owning a house. For our group of high school and college friends, this was the couple. I only mention this because helping someone move from an apartment to a house can be a much different experience then purely moving someone from one apartment to another. The reason for this difference is because people who are moving into their first house tend to go a little bit crazy buying stuff in preparation for the new house. My male friend was pulling his hair out for a few weeks prior to the move because his wife was buying a variety of stuff for the new place. Valentines Day just passed and it appears that I might be the only one not currently on the personalized jewelry bandwagon. A Brief History of Olympic Medals

As most of you are aware, both men’s jewelry and women’s jewelry are usually deeply personal and treasured pieces of one’s overall ensemble. Womens Sunglasses: Not Just For Summer Anymore

Now more than ever, sunglasses are a year round accessory. If you want proof that men’s and women’s sunglasses do a killing in the winter time, all you have to do is watch a couple of minutes of the Winter Olympics coverage. Not only are the athletes fully decked out in shades (or specially designed goggles that cost more then you could imagine paying for some head gear), but everywhere you look people are wearing shades to protect their eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. And, as they are probably thinking, while they are protecting their eyes why not look good with designer shades that will make them stand out from the crowd. Skiers have known for years that sunglasses are important tools for snow play. Besides protecting your eyes from “snow blindness” (an actual medical term), sunglasses can also help skiers better see the course and those who surround you. When snowboarders began to rule the slopes, they brought their own style with them. The Olympic Games: Itâs All About Time

At this moment I am obsessive watching the Winter Olympics. I would consider myself a bit of an Olympic junkie. Summer or Winter, doesn’t matter. Every two years for two weeks in either February or August, my life seems to stop and, to quote Fight Club, everything just seems to have the volume taken down- unless it’s Olympic related. These aren’t people who have decided to take HCG for weight loss to get their bodies in shape; these are people who have worked their entire life to for a chance to win. These people spend every day of their life in constant training for their event. They are in it physically and emotionally. So many sacrifices have been made all in the name of either making the Olympics or winning the gold. This, to me, is what makes the Olympics so incredible. It’s not about getting a new contract; it’s about giving your all and hopefully winning a medal. Men and Bridal Showers: A Good Mix?

I was at a bridal shower a few weeks ago when something rather strange happened. To properly explain what surprised me, I must brief you on typical bridal shower etiquette. For those who don’t frequent many bridal showers, most are female only events. As I’m at the age where my friends are getting married, I’ve been to around five showers in the past two years and all of them have featured only female friends, co-workers and families. In fact most bridal shower invitations will mention to bring a female companion if you wish to bring someone (some though will not give you that option which means only bring yourself and, of course, a gift). What made this last bridal shower so interesting was that there were men in attendance. Now, let me just say this didn’t really bother me. I’m sure there are some “purists” who would faint at the idea of a man being in attendance, but to me, eh, maybe I don’t care enough to freak out. While it didn’t bother me, I have to say it did make a difference. Did you know that you could get quality baby shower invitations online at a great price? Amazing, huh? Alright, maybe I’m in the minority that I found this kind of shocking. Maybe I was always under the belief that you needed to go to someplace that dealt only with personalized invitations to get something of quality for an event like a baby shower.
