Eight or nine years ago I asked myself if I could join the growing band of colour consultants. Having had my colours and style analysed a few years before Iâ€™d found it tremendously useful and exciting to know more about my own colouring and body shape. As a teenager, Iâ€™d always been interested in fashion and had spent many evenings giving my friends makeovers in my bedroom with make-up, curling tongs, clothes and accessories! But, "Could this work as a career, how hard would the training be, how much money would I make?" were some of the questions I asked myself. I went into image consultancy and joined other colour consultants with pretty selfish motives - I wanted to escape a career in which I wasnâ€™t particularly happy, I wanted a job that I could fit around my children and I wanted something I enjoyed. My job as an image consultant often leads people to ask, "What sort of people come to you for a image advice?" They often assume it must be rich people or those in high positions. There really isnâ€™t a simple answer of a type of person who comes to see me. I see people from all kinds of situation, all kinds of jobs, male and female and all ages from teenagers to octogenarians! Often the people who come to see me for image advice do have some sort of profession - solicitors, accountants, teachers who realise how important their image is if they want to maximise their chances of promotion instead of being overlooked. They want instant respect from their clients, junior staff and bosses. As women we are meant to be natural born shoppers and our own style consultants. We are meant to go into department stores or boutiques and enjoy the whole experience. The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance is a survivor-led, national umbrella organization that was established in 1997 with the goal of uniting ovarian cancer survivors and their families, womenâ€™s health advocates, health care providers, researchers and the general public in the battle against ovarian cancer. Our mission is to conquer ovarian cancer by uniting individuals and organizations in a national movement. In the United States this year, approximately 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and the vast majority of them will be diagnosed in late stages of the disease. Unfortunately, the five year survival rates for ovarian cancer have not significantly increased in the last 30 years, and less than 50 percent of women will live five years from diagnosis. The majority of patients with advanced disease will undergo chemotherapy, and while the response rates for primary treatment are fairly high, more than 70 percent of women will have at least one recurrence of her ovarian cancer. Once a patient recurs, there are many choices of chemotherapy drugs, however response rates are typically below 50%. There is nothing worse than being unable to move about freely for months on end, especially for somebody addicted to sports. When my friend was unfortunately injured during his motor car racing accident, fracturing both his legs and his backbone, he could only stay at home with the least possible physical movement. He was almost a person paralyzed with a disability. Since it was mandatory for us to leave for work every morning, he was left alone at home for the entire day. The only person who he managed to have for company was this depressing nurse. She would come, serve him and then leave. The days were a drag and he complained that he was â€˜beginning to forget what the rest of the house looked likeâ€™! The situation was sad, and we all felt sorry for him. But how could he be helped? The only way to recover after the operation was to restrict body movement, especially the movement of his legs, since they were badly affected in the accident. However, it was only after two weeks of staying bed ridden when he had had enough.
