Is The Recession To Blame For The Surge In No Win No Fee claims?

The number of no win no fee claims made during the recession has soared.

The overall amount of compensation claims made has increased significantly as the downturn of the UK economy has left the councils, employers and motorists struggling to cover the costs of carrying out health and safety regulations and simple repairs.

Road accidents

With more motorists failing to carry out MOT and safety checks in fear of having to fork out extra repair costs during the crisis, along with the increasing number of pothole damage to Britain's roads, previous claims that the number of road accidents will soar has been proved wrong.

Figures from the Department for Transport, (DfT) revealed that the number of road accidents in the UK has reduced for the year ending March 2009.

According to the figures, the number of road casualties fell by eight per cent with the number of fatalities or those seriously injured falling by nine per cent.

AA Insurance has welcomed the DfT's figures.

Fall figures good news

Director of AA Insurance, Simon Douglas said: "The falling accident rate is good news, especially as this continues a long-term downward trend. **End Summary** Topics: No win no fee Compensation claim Personal injury
About the Author:
Find out how to make a <a href="http://www.accidentsdirect.com/no-win-no-fee.aspx">no win no fee claim</a> if you have been <a href="http://www.accidentsdirect.com/personal-injury.aspx">injured</a> .

Biker To Pay After Falling Victim To Bike Theft

With the recession leading to an increase in the number of bike thefts, even motorcyclists with cheaper vehicles are being urged to ensure they secure their bikes after research found that motorbike thieves are now targeting the "low value vehicles."

Although during the crisis it may seem expensive to ensure you have a good security over the vehicle, those who fail to secure their bike may end up falling victim to motorcycle theft, and may find that they will have to fork out even more costs to get it back.

Paying to recover your bike

Another man has been left feeling "disgusted" after being told he has to pay £150 to get back his stolen motorbike. The man had his Honda CD175 motorbike stolen from outside his home in Wrexham three weeks ago. The North of Wales Police recovered the vehicle in some woods near Ysgol Morgan Llwyd.

The bike was then taken to a recovery garage where crime scene investigators tested the vehicle for fingerprints and DNA. However, the man has now been told he has to pay £150 or more to get it back unless the bike thief has been prosecuted. **End Summary** Topics: Bike insurance Insurance policies Bike theft
About the Author:
If you are after <a href="http://www.onlyinsurance.com/Bike-Insurance/">bike insurance</a> for your motor, find the right policy at <a href="http://www.onlyinsurance.com/">Only Insurance</a> .

How To Save On Home Insurance During Recession

The recession is causing a majority of Brits to search for new ways to reduce their costs, including opting out of insurance or reducing the amount of cover.

However, these options are more likely to be costly in the long run.

There are a number of ways to reduce the cost of your home insurance without opting out.

Shop around

Shopping around for cheaper home insurance is one of the best ways to reduce costs. Instead of renewing your policy with the same insurer, homeowners are being advised to shop around as there are still lots of cheap deals around.

AA Insurance recently advised homeowners to purchase home and contents insurance separately after a study revealed that 41 per cent of homeowners are paying more for their cover as the result of opting for a combined policy.

Simon Douglas, who is the director of AA Insurance, said: "Recent suggestions that the recession has led up to a fifth of householders to cancel or not renew their cover is worrying, especially at a time when claims for both burglary and weather damage are increasing.

Many insurers offer special discounts for buying a combined home and contents policy. **End Summary** Topics: Home insurance Contents cover Buildings insurance Cheap home insurance
About the Author:
If you are in need of <a href="http://www.onlyinsurance.com/Home-Insurance/">home insurance</a> for your property find the cover you need at <a href="http://www.onlyinsurance.com/">Only Insurance</a> .

'White Van Man' Stereotype Becoming Extinct?

Last year, a poll conducted by a price comparison service revealed that old drivers were the worst type of drivers on the road, followed by "boy racers," with white van drivers falling into third place as the UK's worst driver.

Approximately 21,000 motorists participated in the poll.

A spokesperson said: "According to our research, outdated myths are still prevalent - most think men are better drivers than women and old drivers are the worst."

However, a year later, van drivers are now being criticised for being the "worst on the roads" according to a recent poll by the same price comparison service.

With the number of van drivers having had soared by approximately 40 per cent within the past ten years, over three million registered light commercial vehicles are now travelling across Britain's roads.

White van man

And with the "white van man," (a term used to describe rude and reckless van drivers), being considered as the worst on the roads by 100 per cent of 1,500 UK motorists who participated in the poll, the insurance premiums for other motorists could be pushed up as a result. **End Summary** Topics: Van insurance Light commercial vehicle Van driver White van man
About the Author:
Need a <a href="http://www.onlyinsurance.com/Van-Insurance/">van insurance</a> policy for your vehicle?
Avoid Making A Claim And Improve Bike Safety: Tyres

With the recession increasing, a number of motorists in Britain are opting for two wheelers as a bid to reduce costs.

In addition to the hot summer season encouraging more people to hit the streets and take to their bikes, the number of Brits riding across the country on two wheelers is expected to soar.

As the National Motorcycle Week approaches, along with the current increase in the number of bikers on the roads, the number of insurance claims may soar as a result of road accidents, along with statistics for biker injuries and fatalities.

As a result, bikers are being warned to ensure they take a number of adequate safety precautions if they want to avoid making a claim on their bike insurance.

Nigel Bartram the senior motor underwriting manager at finance provider, Norwich Union, said: "As bike fans are keen to get back on the road after a long winter, our claims data shows that accidents are more likely to happen at this time of year."

Tyre checks vital

According to bike insurance provider, bikers must read their tyre pressure accurately if they want to reduce fuel costs and avoid getting into an accident. **End Summary** Topics: Bike insurance Car insurance Insurance Insurance policy
About the Author:
If you ned a ...

The recession has left a number of Brits cutting corners in a bid to save cash. More and more people are being found to have provided false information on their insurance applications to reduce costs, while others have staged car accidents in a cheap attempt to receive compensation for their 'injuries' through insurance firms.

But there are numbers of simple and legal ways to save cash and avoid making a claim on your car insurance policy without having to fork out thousands of extra pounds.

You and your car

With more Brits carrying extra weight on their shoulders due to the recession, motorists are failing to maintain their vehicles.

Tyre Pressure - According to ATS Eutomaster, a large number of Brits run the risk of being involved in a road accident by failing to check their tyre pressure before setting off on long journeys.

The group operations director of ATS Euromaster, Chris Hufflett, said: "It's a simple five minute job, but from our experience, the majority of drivers don't bother."

"[This] simple five minute job" could end up saving you from hundreds of pounds worth of damage. **End Summary** Topics: car insurance drink driving potholes mot and servicing
About the Author:
RESOURCES

Winter sport: is it safe?

Winter sport enthusiasts are being warned to ensure they take out adequate travel insurance, it has been revealed.

The warning came after Natasha Richardson’s death when she suffered serious injuries to her head after falling while skiing at Mont Tremblant in Canada.

The accident led to a number of injury lawyers highlighting the effects of winter sport injuries.

Christopher Moore, personal injury lawyer at Steeles Law, said: "This tragic accident highlights that whilst skiing is a fun sport, the injuries can be very serious and you should take legal advice if you have been seriously hurt in a skiing accident.

From a financial point of view it just shows taking out insurance is essential because often the accident occurs abroad and the medical costs have been known to run into millions of pounds."

However, according to experts, winter sport is just as safe as a game of football.

Winter sports is safe
Dr Mike Langran stated that it is highly unlikely for those taking part in winter sports to be seriously injured with the risk of death being less than one in a million. **End Summary** Topics: travel insurance insurance
About the Author:
Don't risk going away without adequate <a href="http://www.onlyinsurance.com/">insurance</a> , take tailored <a href="http://www.onlyinsurance.com/Travel-Insurance/">travel insurance</a> for your winter break.

With the downturn of the UK economy worsening, a growing number of Brits are beginning to feel the impacts of the recession as redundancy figures increase.

During the past few years, as more Brits borrowed more than they could afford with the help of careless lending by the banks, the number of those who are suffering from serious debt as they struggle to pay off loans and mortgage arrears are increasing.

Rise in personal debt
According to recent statistics from the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), personal debt has risen to almost £17,000 per person.

CAB found that despite receiving previous debt advice, just under a half of UK homeowners are struggling with loan and mortgage repayments with a majority of them spending over a half of their income in an attempt to pay off the arrears.

However, these figures are been based on the earlier stages of the crunch and are expected to be higher regardless of the ongoing reductions of the base rate.

Chief executive David Harker of CAB said: "These findings make sobering reading, especially as they are based on data collected just before the worst of the credit crunch began to bite. **End Summary** Topics: debt finance
About the Author:
Only finance has latest news and artcles covering the <a href="http://www.onlyfinance.com/Debt/">debt management</a> industry, bankruptcy and <a href="http://www.onlyfinance.com/Debt/Individual-Voluntary-Arrangements.aspx">IVA</a> industry.

With the various methods introduced by the government to improve the current financial crisis showing little improvement, the UK economy is worsening leaving Brits struggling to keep up with debt arrears and other living costs.

As a result, recent figures have revealed that more Brits are avoiding purchasing insurance.

Recent studies have found that a number of Brits are cancelling or lying on their life insurance policies while holidaymakers are risking losing more money by opting out of travel insurance.

Furthermore, motorists are downsizing as a bid to save more cash.

More motorists opting for two-wheelers
Not only has the crunch lead to an increase in the number of motorists downsizing their larger cars to smaller and cheaper cars, it has also lead to an increase in the number of those who are changing from four wheels to two wheels.

In a study conducted by a price comparison website, 19 per cent of commuters had said that they would consider cycling with one of the most popular reasons being because it would save them money.

Steve Sweeny, of the price comparison website said: With finances being squeezed, it's no surprise many would consider hopping on a bicycle to save cash. **End Summary** Topics: insurance broker insurance quote
About the Author:
Lower your <a href="http://www.onlyinsurance.com/Bike-Insurance/">bike insurance</a> premium by comparing the leading insurer's.

With flood insurance alone already being highly priced for homeowners living in flood risk areas, the value of properties will drop further and even then, homes will be harder to sell.

It has been estimated that already approximately 3.5 million UK homes are at risk of flooding due to the recent changes in the current climate.

To make matters worse, with the pressure for available land increases, developers may have to build on floodplains.

Last year, Association of British Insurers (ABI) director general, Stephen Haddrill said: "We need new homes, but the UK government's plans to build three million homes by 2020 are in jeopardy unless we make them more resistant to flooding."

Flood Insurance Guidance
The ABI has introduced flood insurance guidance for developers planning to build on flood risk areas.

The guidance for planners outlines the availability of insurance for those in high flood risk areas.

The guidance instructs builders and developers that homeowners and potential buyers should also be provided with the details of the measures taken to prevent flood damage. This includes raised flooring, risk assessment, and flood resilient building materials. **End Summary** Topics: insurance
About the Author:
Find out if your <a href="http://www.onlyinsurance.com/Home-Insurance/">home insurance</a> policy covers you for flood damage, if you are buying a home then make sure the area has no history of flooding.
