Preventing Fires in Long Island

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) reported nearly 45,000 fire events in 2008. Just this past March, there were over 4,000 fires citywide. We all love and appreciate our local firefighters for their dedication, strength, and protection. They keep us safe and remind us of the precautions that need to be taken to reduce the risk of fires.

Consider the following advice on fire prevention and escape for New Yorkers based on information from the FDNY and other fire prevention specialists:

Fire Prevention
Reducing the potential for a fire breaking out in your apartment or home is relatively simple. It just takes paying attention to the dangers that pop up around the house along with some simple planning. To prevent a fire from starting in your home:

- Install smoke detectors on each level of your home and test each device once a month. Smoke detectors should have the batteries checked and/or changed twice a year.
- Keep portable space heaters at least three feet from anything flammable and never leave them on when you are not at home.
- Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children. **End Summary** Topics: New York fires Long Island fires Staten Island fires fire damage fire prevention
About the Author:
New York fire damage restoration is just a phone call away.
5 NW Places To Go Fishing This Summer

If you're like me, you simply can't resist the thrill of the catch. When you see the tip of your pole bend toward the water a split-second before the powerful pull of the "big one" fighting on the other end, that's the lure of the lake, the draw of the fishing hole, the call of the river. To help you thoroughly enjoy this coming season, I've highlighted five of the best fishing areas around the Pacific Northwest.

1. WASHINGTON - Lewis River
Flowing from the western slopes of Mt. Adams, the north fork of Lewis River is among the most popular in Washington. The lower portion of the river, with ample bank and boat access, provides plenty of Coho and Chinook salmon as well as steelhead. Because there are a number of protected species, check with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for current and updated information on catch limits.

2. OREGON - Rogue River
Beginning near Crater Lake in southern Oregon, the Rogue River is often called "an angler's paradise."The lower section of the Rogue River is heaven for serious fishermen. **End Summary** Topics: oregon fishing trips pacific northwest fishing filet knife fishing light flex light
About the Author:
Get what you need for your next Oregon fishing trip , including fishing flex lights and filet knives at lightsandknives.com.

LED Lights: Testimonials In Safety

What's in your emergency survival kits? The kit in your car probably includes blankets, water, and non-perishable food. Your hiking kit might contain a compass and whistle as well. In addition to basic survival tools like these, every emergency kit should also include an LED flashlight. An LED flashlight is a life-saving tool, as shown by some of the user testimonials below.

Lost
Robert, a law enforcement official, was enjoying a two-hour hike in New Hampshire with his son's Boy Scout troop until unforeseen delays and obstacles threw them off course. The sun set, the temperature dropped, and snow began to fall. The trail was soon lost as markers were covered by the rising snow. Everyone was cold, tired, and wet. After finding shelter in the form of a cabin, the three troop leaders began retracing their steps, no easy task in dark, snowy conditions. Fortunately, the LED flashlight that Robert had pocketed almost as an afterthought helped lead the troop to safety by illuminating their footprints in the snow. Robert wryly remembers: "One of the adults lugged a 3 D-cell light up the hill only to find out it was dead. **End Summary** Topics: LED flashlight LED bright light LED keychain light tactical torch
About the Author:
Note: The testimonies referenced in this article can be found in their entirety at http://www.coastportland.com/testimonials .

Proactively Prevent Business Data Loss

For most individuals and businesses, data loss happens. Even the most established technology companies with expert experience in network and laptop security, accidents and hacks happen and data is lost. With the right support and preventative measures, however, losing information doesn't always have to end in disaster. By making information safety a priority of your computer IT staff and for the employees who use your equipment, data loss can become a rare occurrence.

Preventing Data Loss
Most causes of work station (laptop or PC) data loss can be attributed to human error, physical malfunctions and hardware failure. The Boston Computing Network characterizes data loss into four different types: human error (overwriting a major file), file corruption (virus attack), hardware (fried hard drive), and site-related (earthquake causes coffee to spill on laptop). **End Summary** Topics: data loss prevention portland computer it beaverton computer it data recovery it security portland computer support
About the Author:
Richard McNeal is a frequent writer for Ascensha, a VTM Company.

Five Fire Damage Prevention Tips

Fire damage can cripple small businesses, a fact that many business owners don't consider until disaster strikes. According to the popular cliché, hindsight is always 20/20. After a disaster, it's easy to see where careful planning and preparation could have prevented damage. To help you prepare for the worst, here are ten tips to help improve your fire prevention foresight.

1. Damage Due to Flames and Smoke.
The damage fire causes is typically two-fold. Obviously, flames consume everything they touch, reducing objects to ash and corrupting the integrity of larger structures. Smoke is attracted to cool areas and rises, so it travels through vents, plumbing, and any other openings. Smoke causes two main problems: soot stain and odor. Things like carpet and upholstery trap and absorb the horrible odor, and it's very difficult to completely rid furniture, computers, art, and walls of the lingering stench. Additionally, toxic chemicals can be produced when safe materials are combined and heated by fire. Part of your recovery plan should include a screen for toxic chemicals before any form of fire restoration is attempted.

2. Common Fire Starters.
The two most common sources of a fire in a workplace are easy to avoid. **End Summary** Topics: fire restoration fire damage recovery fire insurance disaster prevention planning
About the Author:
Document Restoration Services : Contact the fire damage specialists at Rapid Refile today and find out about their water and fire damage recovery services in Pennsylvania, Virginia and the greater Northeast United States.

Waterproof Flashlights: A Boating Must Have

Whether you're spending time on the water in a boat, raft, canoe or inner-tube it is always a good idea to have a handheld light easily accessible. You can never predict what circumstances may cause your plans to keep you out past dark. In most areas, a working light is mandatory on all vessel, large boats as well as canoes and kayaks. While large ships and boats require strong, spotlights as well as handheld flashlights, a compact, portable waterproof flashlight is perfect for a smaller vessel.

Waterproof Flashlight Must Haves
There are a number of aspects to consider when looking for a good waterproof flashlight to keep on board your vessel.

Size: A waterproof flashlight should be easy to carry and access at any time. Avoid bulky handheld lights you are apt to leave at home rather than take with you on a small boat. If possible, have two lights, one small one that you can attach to your life jacket or fishing vest and a larger one that is tied into the boat.

Directional: Large sailing vessels utilize stationary mounted boat lights to handle their emergency light needs. **End Summary** Topics: Waterproof flashlight boat lights LED torches
About the Author:
Richard McNeal is an Oregon-based writer.

Theater Therapy: Soothing Your Recession Woes

In today's economic recession, many have lost their jobs, more can't find work, and unemployment rates are breaking records. While many businesses are as hard-pressed as consumers, one industry could see an increase in business during these rough economic times: movie theaters.

Historically, Americans have always turned to the cinema to escape their everyday woes. In the Great Depression, movie theaters drew nearly 60-70 million viewers each week, more than half of the population at the time. Skip ahead to today's recession, and it's easy to see why Americans still love to go to the movies. Here are a few reasons why Americans are attracted to movie theaters during times of economic hardship.

1. Cinema is an affordable form of entertainment.
Logic would seem to dictate that with money and budgets getting tighter, less people would find themselves spending extra cash at the theater. Yet, some sources say that movie theater attendance during the Great Depression was higher than attendance during times of economic growth and expansion. And that makes sense. As a relatively cheap form of entertainment, attending a local movie theater allowed Americans to forget the troubling economic times without making their financial situation worse. **End Summary** Topics: movie theater Eugene movie theaters movie theatre local movie theater
About the Author:
Check out what's playing at the David Minor Theater, the first beer and movie theater in Eugene .

Five Rules For A Safe Winter Hike

For novice and avid summer hikers alike, the winter hiking season does not need to be feared or avoided. It should however be respected. The precautions a hiker should take when hiking in winter conditions are similar to those they should in the summer, with only some minor variations to account for the weather and potential changes in weather.

Below are the five keys to being a safe winter hiker.

Be Conscious of the Weather
If you are planning a hike, check the local weather forecast for your destination area throughout the week prior in order to better understand the current weather patterns and temperatures. Make very sure to check the forecast on the day of your hike and take note of the expected weather and temperatures for the day of the hike as well as a day or two past. Also, it is best to understand how those weather conditions change or are modified as your elevation changes in the area. Never plan a hike when the conditions are expected to be harsh and unnavigable.

Even the best laid plans can be thwarted by the weather. **End Summary** Topics: LED flashlight LED lantern LED headlamp multi-purpose knife
About the Author:
Richard McNeal lives in the Northwest and writes for Discount Lights and Knives.

Making Your Emergency Kit Top Priority in 2009

Many people dismiss the time honored-tradition of making personal resolutions this time of year. That tradition has gone along the wayside for most the idea of adding pressure to our hectic lives seems daunting in this day and age. While I am not one to encourage people to make personal resolutions around New Years, I am one who likes to see people make practical changes to the way they act and live in order to improve safety and give a little peace of mind.

One of the easiest things families can commit to doing this year is to create an emergency kit for their home. Unforeseen disaster and complications can hit us at any time. Preparation for these things can increase safety and give you peace-of-mind.

What You Need to Know
I break emergency kits into two types: Home and Travel. A kit stored at home will usually contain more supplies because of the added room and the potential to be stuck in the home for long spans of time during a disaster. However, during many disasters, evacuation is necessary. **End Summary** Topics: LED flashlight emergency light portable emergency light LED lantern multipurpose tool
About the Author:
Richard McNeal lives in Oregon and is a contributing writer for DLK

Memorial Tributes: Using Poetry In a Service

Planning a funeral service is no easy task, as people are weary and uncertain during such an emotional time. Finding ways in which to express thoughts and feelings is difficult when there are no perfect words to say. A funeral poem is a useful aid, as its words are specifically intended to help mourn and honor a loved one. Appropriate at a funeral, memorial, graveside service, or wake, memorial poetry speaks to the heart.

In the Eulogy

Memorial poetry is a powerful medium of expression and often communicates our thoughts and feelings better than our own words. As such, using poetry in the eulogy can be a most fulfilling and moving experience. While writing a memory poem yourself is always a meaningful endeavor, there are many memory poems available that can accurately and appropriately express the particular message you're trying to communicate-whether it be one of sorrow, remembrance, or hope. A few examples of appropriate funeral poems include: All Is Well by Henry Scott Holland, Farewell by Emily Dickinson, No Longer Mourn for Me by William Shakespeare, or Psalm 23: The Lord is My Shepherd. **End Summary** Topics: funeral poem in memory of poems memorial poetry memorial poem
About the Author:
The right poetry in a memorial service can evoke remembrance, compassion and sympathy.
