So you have decided to build you home solar power and home wind turbine. You have searched the internet and come across the Make Natural Power guide. But does it really work? And is it the best diy energy guide out there? Let me tell you what I think of it.

The best thing about Make Natural Power is its cover. Everything beyond that was disappointing to say the least. Although it appears to have all the features of the the other guides, the information is very thin and not well-explained.

You will be able to build a solar and wind power system, but it will take you a very long time, unless you have great technical skills.

Dislikes

* Poor diagrams

Not only were the diagrams for both the solar and wind power instructions boring and dull, but they were badly labeled and and not even to scale.

* Low quality solar power system

Since the diagrams and instructions were difficult to follow, the reader has to make too many assumptions resulting in a low-quality solar panel, if any at all. **End Summary** Topics: make natural power make natural power review make natural power scam home solar power home wind turbine
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008. * The best diagrams

Home Made Power Plant had by far the best diagrams. They were well-labeled for the solar plans, easy to follow, colorful, and mostly to scale. And most importantly they were large enough to see what was going on in them.

* Great free extras

The information on the maintaining the systems, and getting the legal aspects of the systems sorted out was comprehensive and useful. We particularly liked the strategies of saving power - they were so simple, yet most of us overlook them. And the best part is, these tips have already helped us save hundreds of dollars over the past 4 months.

* Adds value to your home

Okay, this actually applies to any of the top 3 guides, but we thought it is worth mentioning. **End Summary** Topics: home made power plant homemade power plant home made power plant review
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.

Written by Bill Ford - a scientist, researcher, inventor and energy consultant - Home Made Energy is a great guide for people with limited technical knowledge. The instructions are easy to follow, and the only place where it falls short of it's rival, Earth4Energy, is that it lacks instructional videos.

* We had fun

Since the instructions for the wind turbine were so well laid out, everything went smoothly, and we really enjoyed putting the windmill together. The end result looks so professional as well!

* Cheapest option

Well, Home Made Energy is only about $2 cheaper than its rivals, but with the economy currently in crisis, every dollar helps.

* Written for the layman

Bill Ford obviously wanted to appeal to the masses when he wrote this guide. It was super simple to understand, and although the diagrams could be a little confusing at times, it was almost impossible not to end up with a working windmill after following the instructions.

* Value for money

Although similarly priced to its competitors, the Earth4Energy ebook is not only the longest guide (currently 73 pages), but also the most complete. And if the guide could not answer any questions we had, the great customer support helped fill in the blanks, which brings us to our next point...

* Excellent customer service

Our support tickets were answered not only quickly, but very thoroughly. Furthermore, a while back we recommended they provide video instructions to help people picture the building process better - and guess what? They recently did! How's that for meeting your customers' needs?

* Excellent solar panel plans

The solar panel system plans were the most comprehensive and thanks to the great instructional videos, they were by far the easiest to follow. Material cost estimates were accurate - the author, Michael Harvey, claims you can get all the solar parts for about $100-$150. We managed to find everything for $117.53. **End Summary** Topics: home solar kits earth4energy earth4energy review home solar power
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
5 Reasons To Get A Solar Attic Fan

Are you currently using an electric attic fan or some sort of electric ventilation system at home? Then have you ever thought of installing a solar attic fan? When most people think of solar products, they immediately think "expensive!", but when we investigated getting a solar powered attic fan and compared it to conventional ventilation systems, it was obvious which way we were going to go.

There are so many clear benefits for getting a solar attic fan, that you would be crazy not to invest in one. But before we delve into the reasons for buying one, we will quickly explain how a solar powered attic fan works:

A solar attic fan is a solar powered vertical turbine, that is installed on the highest point on your roof - usually the attic (hence the name). As soon as the sun hits the solar panels, the turbine starts to spin, drawing warm air out of the house.

As the sun rises further and the temperature in the house rises, the warm air in the house naturally rises to the attic, where it is then sucked out by the fan. **End Summary** Topics: solar attic fan solar powered attic fan
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Politics In The Home Solar Panel Industry

After recently reading a New York Times article, we started thinking about home solar panel politics. You see, although solar power is gaining popularity as a renewable energy solution for home, it will never become mainstream without the backing from the federal government.

A poll by the Nuclear Power Industry revealed that the number one choice for generating power was not from nuclear, coal or natural gas, but from solar energy. However, at the time the poll was taken solar only provided for about 0.01 percent of America's power supply. Solar power is popular, but there's not enough investment!

In Washington, where the energy policies are signed, solar power lobbyists generally work with small budgets in the tens of thousands of dollars. Now when you compare it to the tens of millions of dollars that nuclear, coal, gas and oil lobbyists have available, you can only guess which energy policies gain approval by our beloved politicians.

But when you look at countries like Germany and Japan, their government policies have increased solar power implementation beyond what was thought possible. **End Summary** Topics: home panel solar solar power home solar panel solar politics
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
The Pros Of Using LED Solar Powered Lights

Home LED solar powered lights are the latest in solar power products to hit the market. By being free of relying on traditional electricity sources, these modern lights are a dream for designers when it comes to outdoor lighting.

How solar power LED lights came about:

Ever since solar power became portable, people have thought of as many solar power uses as possible. What made solar power so attractive for outdoor lighting was its portability - replacing the need for long, unsightly extension leads in the garden. Initially individuals tried using compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, but the small solar panels could not produce enough wattage for the lights to burn bright enough.

As a result the solar light market was limited to places near the equator with large amounts of sunlight. And even then the solar panels and batteries had to be large enough to cater for the period of longest nights, shortest days and cloudiest conditions.

Then as LED lights started hitting the market, manufacturers realized they would be ideal for solar lighting since they burned brightly, but used minimal power. **End Summary** Topics: solar powered lights solar powered lighting
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
New Legislation Could Reduce Wind Turbine Cost

Recently the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, H.R. 1424, was passed by Congress that includes a new federal investment tax credit to assist the public in offsetting the wind turbine cost for their homes, businesses or farms.  Without any delay, president Bush signed the bill into law.

The Act offers a federal tax credit for 30% of the total installed cost of any wind power system with a 100 kilowatt capacity or less, but the credit will not exceed $4,000. The limitation of the Act is that it only applies to new systems installed from 3 October 2008 through to December 2016, so any current systems will get no tax relief.  In addition, for home wind turbines, the credit is further limited to the lesser of $4,000 or $1,000 per kW of capacity.

America, who has typically lead the worldwide small wind turbine market recently begun to feel pressure from other nations that offered enticing incentives for small renewable energy systems. **End Summary** Topics: wind turbine cost home wind turbine small wind turbine
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Cost Effective Solar Power Design

New solar power design research conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) could lead to higher powered, more affordable solar panels.

With the help of computer simulations and various advanced chip-manufacturing methods, a team of physicists and engineers at MIT have discovered new ways of getting greater efficiency from photovoltaic solar cells.

In the experiment, the team applied an anti-reflective coating to the front, and a innovative series of multi-layered reflective coatings and a defraction grating - a closely spaced array of lines - to the back of ultra-thin silicon films to increase the cells' power by up to 50%.

With the help of the carefully designed layers on the back of each cell, light is bounced around longer inside the thin silicon film, allowing it more time to transfer its energy into an electric current. Without those coatings the light would be reflected straight out of the cell.

One of the team members, Peter Bermel, a post-doctoral researcher in MIT's physics department explained that it is critical that any light entering the layer should travel through a long path in the silicon. **End Summary** Topics: solar power design solar panels solar power photovoltaics
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
A lot has been said about our wind generators' power over the past few years. Initially thought of as the answer to the worlds energy crisis, we soon realized how many turbines, and the vast amount of space that would actually be needed to power the world.

People are already up in arms about wind turbines ruining scenic landscapes, and environmentalists are worried about birds getting caught up in the blades. But what if there was a solution? An idea so revolutionary that it is hard to imagine...

It appears there is. Time magazine even named it one of the best inventions of 2008. It's called the "Flying Electric Generator".

So what is it?

The FEG is a type of "rotorcraft" that hovers above the ground and generates power from strong high altitude winds. But what's amazing about it is that it is lifted by the wind. To keep it from flying off, it is tethered to the ground, from which the electric current is sent back down to earth.

As the FEG lifts higher, it reaches stronger winds, which enable it to produce more power. **End Summary** Topics: wind generators power feg flying electric generator wind power
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Kinds Of Solar Oven Designs To Choose From

For several decades various solar oven designs have typically been used in third world regions where electricity or other fuel sources are hard to find. Solar cookers have been used effectively in sunny African countries like Sudan to not only cook food, but also for water purification and pasteurization.

And like other solar technologies, there's no reason first world countries should not promote solar cooking at home to help save energy. Although cooking may take four times longer than conventional ovens, no electricity or fuel is used - just the power of the sun.

Over time many solar oven designs have been mastered, but they generally fall into three main categories: parabolic solar cookers, panel cookers, and box cookers.

Parabolic Solar Cooker:

A parabolic solar cooker, as the name implies, is made from any reflective material in a parabolic (bowl like) shape that focuses sunlight to a single point. It is the most effective at cooking food quickly and efficiently, however, it tends to be more expensive and hard to make by hand. Furthermore, its fixed shape makes it less portable and raises some safety concerns. **End Summary** Topics: solar oven designs solar oven solar cookers solar cooking
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Swift Wind Turbine To Make Your Home's Power

After having much success installing over 250 home wind turbines in Scotland, Cascading Engineering is bringing the Swift wind turbine to America and Canada.

The company that specializes in plastics, partnered with Swift's Scottish designer, Renewable Devices, to install the revolutionary small wind turbine in the U.S. households.

What sets the Swift apart from other small wind turbines is the reduced noise it produces. In addition, the turbine can be attached to rooftops instead of towers. With it's five blades and "outer diffuser" ring, the company claims vibration is reduced, resulting in only 35 decibels of noise.

With the turbine's seven foot diameter and two fins to help it face the wind, it can rotate 360 degrees and it automatically shuts down in very strong winds. All the elements of its unique design allow the Swift to generate up to 1.5 kW of power in 14 mile per hour winds. This equates to approximately 2000 kilowatt hours per year, which is about a quarter of the electricity consumed by a typical U.S. household.

At a cool $10 000 to be installed, this turbine does not come cheap. **End Summary** Topics: swift wind turbine home wind turbine small wind turbine swift rooftop wind turbine
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Hydro Power: The Best Renewable Energy Available

Harnessing the power of water has been used for centuries for many useful purposes. Initially it was used for irrigation and operating various machines, such as windmills and dock cranes. But these days it has a more important use: as a renewable source of electricity.

So what is hydro power?

Well, basically it is the generation of electricity by using the natural force of water.

And how is hydro power generated ?

It is generated in 3 different ways: hydroelectric power, tidal power, and wave power.

Hydroelectric Power:

This is the most common form of hydro-power, making up the majority of all renewable energy produced. Electricity is produced in hydroelectric dams where the force of falling water drives massive turbines.

The advantage of this type of power is that not only does it produce electricity, but the dam helps collect water for our use, so it's a power and water source in one. Furthermore, the force of the water is so strong that megawatts of electricity can be produced to help power entire cities.

There is also a large amount of control over how fast the turbines spin. **End Summary** Topics: hydro power hydro-power wave power tidal power
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Nuclear Power: Are They Ever Going To Learn?

Early on man realized that fossil fuels would soon run out, and so nuclear power was born. It was glorified as the cleaner alternative to oil and coal power stations, promising lower emissions and environmental safety. But has it really lived up to our expectations? And is it the ideal energy solution for the future? We think not.
Although nuclear power is efficient and responsible for about 25% of the world's electricity production, it is flawed in many respects:
Nuclear power cannot solve global warming:
Once seen as the solution to global climate change, nuclear power is far from it. Everywhere along the nuclear chain - from the mining of uranium to its transportation to the construction of the power plant - greenhouse gases are emitted.
Furthermore, their construction takes too long to solve global warming. In fact, investing in nuclear power deprives other efforts - such as energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy - of further funding and development.
Nuclear plants release radiation:
The levels of radiation released in the air, water and soil are considered "safe". **End Summary** Topics: for nuclear power nuclear power nuclear power energy
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
How Biofuels Have Helped Us

As the name implies, biofuels are fuels derived from organic material. Since they can be made in many ways, they are classified as 1st generation, 2nd generation, and 3rd generation.

First generation bio-fuels are the more common fuels that are produced from food crops and animal fats. Some examples include bio-diesel, vegetable oil, and bio-gas.

Second generation bio-fuels are made from waste biomass, making them a more sustainable solution as compared to their 1st gen counterparts. They include various alcohols (such as ethanol) and diesel derived from wood and even human excrement.

Third generation bio-fuels are generally made from algae that are farmed on a massive scale. By way of photosynthesis and the breaking down of carbon dioxide, the carbohydrates extracted from these micro-organisms is used to make various fuels.
So what separates bio-fuels from fossil fuels?

Bio-fuels differ from fossil fuels in the following ways:

Where bio-fuels can be made very quickly, fossil fuels take millions of years to be made.
The pollution from fossil fuels is far more severe. Although burning bio-fuels also creates emissions, the carbon dioxide is more environmentally friendly and absorbed easily by crops and organisms. **End Summary** Topics: biofuel biofuel biodiesel biofuel production biofuels
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Why Have A Green Energy Home

With all the improvements in green energy technology, it is now simpler than ever to begin adapting your house into a green energy home. A green energy home makes use of renewable sources to supply hot water, power, heating and security.
There are a variety of methods to making your house a green energy home. The first is solar power. In your green energy home you could put in a solar heating system to heat and store water for use, and put in photovoltaic solar panels to convert the sun's rays into power. If you bought and had these systems put in by a specialist they could be rather expensive. However, there are numerous resources and guides on the market to produce your own solar panel and hot water systems that are much more affordable.
If your house is still being built, a good way to turn it into a solar power house is to employ passive solar technology during construction. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, this means making use of the south-facing sides of your house for heating and cooling. **End Summary** Topics: green energy home home solar power home wind turbine
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
How To Build A Solar Powered Pump Fountain

If you are thinking of doing a few upgrades to your garden, have you ever thought of getting a solar powered pump birdbath? In fact, why buy one, when you can make it?
So why would you want to make a solar powered pump birdbath?
The Advantages Are:

Fountains circulate the water, keeping the bird bath from going stagnant
The pump does not have to plugged into your power supply
The pump runs on DC power, so no inverter is needed.
It requires little power (about 6 volts) so you only need a few small solar panels.
No batteries are required, since the pump only really needs to operate during the day when the sun is out and the birds are in the garden.
You could learn to make your own solar panels, reducing the cost even further.
The birdbath can be placed anywhere in your garden, without the need for unsightly wires.

And what does it take to make a solar powered pump birdbath?
The easiest way is to simply buy a birdbath with a pump and fountain already fitted. Then all you need to do is wire up some small solar panels. **End Summary** Topics: solar powered pump solar fountain solar birdbath
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Calculating Your Home Solar Panel Watt Costs And Requirements

With our current economic melt down and energy prices fluctuating daily, many of us are thinking of installing solar panel power to contribute to our homes' energy needs, and reduce our power bills.
But how much solar panel watt power do we need to say halve our power bills? And how much will that power cost us to install?
Here is a four step process that you can follow to answer these two vital questions:
1 - Calculate Daily Power Used:
To do this, get your last 12 monthly power bills and calculate your average kilowatt hour (kWh) usage per month. The reason we use 12 is because our power consumption fluctuates with the seasons. But if you do not have all your power bills, then simply use last month's one.
Then divide your monthly usage by 30 (the average number of days in a month, to get your daily power used.
- So for example: If you have a monthly power consumption of 800 kWh, then your daily amount is 800/30= 26.7 kWh per day.
- Now if you want to only halve your power bill then you need to produce 26.7 / 2 = 13. **End Summary** Topics: solar panel watt solar power costs calculate solar power
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
4 Types Of Renewable Energy The World Produces

As the world reaches its energy crisis we need to reduce our dependence on non-renewable energy sources, and start generating renewable energy on a massive scale.
To date there are four main types of renewable energy that we can produce: wind power, solar power, hydro power, and geothermic power.
Wind Power: Wind turbines have been around for millennia, further back than the birth of Christ. Over the years they have been used to pump water, drag boats and grind flour. But at the turn of the industrial revolution, wind turbines were made to produce electricity.
Although many people envision windmills as those ornate ones in Holland or the small wind-pumps on farms, they have been developed tremendously in the past decade. Now wind turbines are able to generate thousands of megawatts of power, and when used on a small scale at home, wind power can substitute conventional energy sources, helping households to get off the grid.
Solar Power: The sun is the most readily available form of energy there is, so we should be using it to a larger extent. And as technology advances, households are provided with a number of ways to harness the power of the sun. **End Summary** Topics: types of renewable energy green energy alternative energy
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Power Off The Grid Is The Way To Go

With the fast exhaustion of non-renewable resources, the shortage of power, the need for a reliable electricity supply and daily alerts of global warming, it is time we make a change.
So, where shall we start?
How about making your power off the grid? If you never thought of doing such a thing, you should know that there are many reasons for making your own power off the grid. They are:
1 - Reduced Power Costs:
By making your own renewable energy, you no longer have to rely on the utilities for power. And since you no longer get power off the grid, your electricity costs will reduce substantially. And once you have recovered your investment in your solar or wind power system, you essentially get unlimited free power.
2 - Lowers Your Carbon Footprint:
Making power off the grid requires the use of no coal or fossil fuels, but rather clean energy from the sun, wind or water. So, as you make more power off the grid, you reduce carbon emissions, and lower your carbon footprint. This promotes a cleaner, greener earth for current and future generations. **End Summary** Topics: power off the grid off grid living renewable energy solar
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.

Imagine your neighbors told you they were going to produce their own home turbine wind power? Would you be shocked? Well, very soon that may be the norm. As we gain interest in making alternative power, we increase our understanding of making our own home turbine wind power. Lately, it has become so popular that a number of step-by-step instructions are available on the Internet, where in a short space of time you can learn to build your own home turbine wind power from scratch.
Before attempting to build any home wind turbine, it is best to do your research, such as on the various blades designs, what type of dynamo to buy, and how to put all the components together to make a working home wind turbine. While all the information can be found freely on the web, it is better to buy a complete step-by-step guide, with all the information in one place and easy to find. Another advantage to a guide is that it comes with free customer support if you need any help or assistance.
All guides are not the same, so investigate each guide thoroughly before pulling out your credit card. **End Summary** Topics: home turbine wind wind power small wind turbine home wind
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
Getting A House Solar Panel Kit

With global warming affecting the world's climates and energy resources rapidly diminishing, many of us are resorting to renewable energy for lowering our carbon footprint. But, what holds most of us back from using such energy is the high cost of professional systems and installations. The cost of a commercial house solar panel system can run into the tens of thousands of dollars, so a number of people are learning to build their own solar power system from home.
It is very possible to create your own house solar panel, but most of the time the panels are small and generate insufficient electricity to power more than a single light and only for a short time. And when an expert system would be too pricey, the ideal way for anyone to make their own power from the sun, would be with a solar photovoltaic kit. These diy solar power kits come with everything you need to produce your own solar electricity from home.
What's nice about these kits is that they are available from General Electric and other Fortune 500 companies, making them rather cost effective and providing you a faster return on investment as opposed to professional installations. **End Summary** Topics: house solar panel solar power photovoltaic power renewabl
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
The 3 Main Types Of Roof Solar Panels

When shopping for roof solar panels, not only are there a number of brands, but also various types of roof solar panels to choose from. And each type has its pros and cons.
So what kind of roof solar panels are there? And how do they differ from one another?
To date there are 3 kinds, which we will explore in this article.
Monocrystalline Solar Panels:
The first and most widely used type are monocrystalline solar panels. Since they were the first to be produced, they have dominated the solar market for quite some time. They are your typical blue iridescent panels with rounded cells packed in uniform rows and visible from all directions.
Monocrystalline solar panels tend to be very costly to produce since they require a single silicon crystal grown in a very complicated process. This results in higher prices for consumers. In fact, at the time of writing this (Dec 2008), monocrystalline solar panels are about 41% more expensive per watt compared to thin film solar.
The advantage of these photovoltaic panels is that they take up the least space, making them a good choice for people with not much space. **End Summary** Topics: roof solar panels home solar panels solar power renewable
About the Author:
Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008.
