"But, Doctor, It Hurts When I Exercise…"

What do you do when your neuropathy or some other painful condition just makes it hurt to work out?

It helps to not only lose weight but keep your weight under control…

It strengthens your bones…

It improves your cardiovascular health…

It has even been shown to fight depression…

And if you happen to have diabetes, you know how important exercise is in managing your glucose levels.

But what do you do when your neuropathy or some other painful condition just makes it hurt to work out?

If you struggle with neuropathy, complications from diabetes, post-chemo nerve pain or any other painful medical condition, it can be really easy to just sit around and do nothing.

Because it just hurts too much to be active.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Do some exercise that doesn't need ache from your joints. Try it now but don't give yourself into so much pain just like what you feel.

Most of us would agree that it be far better to prevent suffering like this by doing the necessary amount of exercise every day. **End Summary** Topics: neuropathy exercise yoga exercise swimming exercise tai chi exercise stretching
About the Author:
Meet Dr. John Hayes, Jr. - Envy Award Nominee who writes "Living and Practicing by Design" and "Beating Neuropathy.
How Do You Prepare When Meeting With Your Health Professional

In order to properly treat you, the professional you trust with your medical care has to know what you're feeling and the more detail you can provide, the better.

Your health professional can have every medical degree known to man but he doesn't live in your skin…

What's normal for you may not be normal for someone else.

In order to properly treat you, the professional you trust with your medical care has to know what you're feeling and the more detail you can provide, the better.

The bottom line is, you have to get involved in your own care if you want any chance of a good outcome.

Plan Now For Your Next Visit

Regardless of whether you're seeing a health professional that you've seen before or if it's a first time visit, the more information you can provide about your current symptoms, the better. Don't expect to just walk into the office and "wing it" and get the best possible outcome.

Be honest in the information you provide to your health professional. If you don't provide accurate information, there is no way he can accurately diagnose and treat whatever problems you're having. **End Summary** Topics: back pain cancer neuropathy chemotherapy neuropathy diabetes Diabetic Neuropathy
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr main purpose now is to provide fellow health care practitioners with the systems, platforms, tools and executive skills needed in today's very complex arena, without unneeded stress. So what do you do? How do you help these patients the most? Where do you the clinician actually begin?

Giving Importance To Patients

Few people think of themselves as customers when they go to their healthcare provider.

And even fewer people on staff with doctors recognize that their patients are actually customers.

But they are.

And there is just as much competition for your services as for any other consumer product or service.

To make your practice stand out from the crowd, give your staff a few pointers on treating patients like valued customers.

Marketing your practice as a special experience is easier when you take steps to ensure that your patients consider their time with you a good experience. Go ahead. Be brave. Put a lot of customer reviews and client testimonials for your online business to boost up your internet marketing efforts. You'll be respected for it.

Make a visit to your office an experience that will have your patients referring family and friends to you the next time someone needs a good doctor. Here are few things to brush up on with your staff to make your patients' experience a memorable one:

1. Get patient information discreetly as soon as they arrive. **End Summary** Topics: patients good patient treatment patients are customers
About the Author:
Meet Dr. John Hayes, Jr. - Envy Award Nominee who writes "Living and Practicing by Design" and "Beating Neuropathy.
Helpful Tips To Improve Symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome

For years, clinician treating degenerative diseases as well as peripheral neuropathy have focused almost exclusively on symptom control with medication. Now we know that many patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy have metabolic syndrome as the root cause of their illness. With the rampant obesity in the United States, those numbers will continue to grow at an alarming rate. Knowing that, we have no excuse not to step up to the plate and treat the whole patient. Not just prescribing drugs when essential but designing treatment protocols that address:

• Lifestyle changes
• Nutrition education and changes in diet
• Biomechanics and exercise

Let me just say - if you aren't interested in taking a hands on approach to the treatment of your patients…really getting to know them and guiding them through the regimen, this program is not for you. Just standing back, prescribing and not getting involved - really involved - with treating the whole patient leads to nothing but frustration. For you and your patients. And when patients get frustrated, they don't follow your instructions, they stop coming to you for treatment and over the long haul, they certainly don't refer friends and family. **End Summary** Topics: successful doctors successful practice doctors the world's most successful doctors
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of "Living and Practicing by Design" and "Beating Neuropathy".
Peripheral Neuropathy Self-Treatment

Patients suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy often asked if it is possible to do self-treatment. The answer is of course YES, self-treatment is possible. However, it is strongly recommended that patients undergo an initial period of supervision as vast majority of patients who do have been more successful in their treatment.

Why is there a need for an initial period of supervision? It is our opinion and experiences that peripheral neuropathy patients need to be very thoroughly evaluated and monitored by a central treating licensed healthcare professional. This is to allow patients to have someone to coordinate their care and make sure that all necessary diagnostic tests are done. The healthcare professional will also make sure that all other healthcare conditions are fully addressed during the evaluation period.

We strongly recommend that patients undergo a five-week clinical trial in the office prior to being discharged with the homecare unit because we believe in the success of having patients undergo initial supervision. The trial includes a nutritional evaluation, extensive clinical baseline and follow-up exams.

For the entire 5 weeks, your healthcare professional will be administering con-current manual therapies, prescriptive exercises, and nutritional support. **End Summary** Topics: neuropathy peripheral neuropathy neuropathy treatment
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of "Living and Practicing by Design" and "Beating Neuropathy".
3-Part Treatment for Neuropathy

Earlier, Dr. Phillip and I have talked about developing an appropriate treatment for peripheral neuropathy that can be initially administered in the office but ultimately in part can be done by patients from their home.

In recent studies, it has been discovered that hypoxia or nerve damage is the common link to almost all cases of neuropathy. Because of this, Dr. Phillip and I theorized that any method that can help reverse this situation at the cellular level is bound to improve patient's condition. Clinically, this seems to be the case.

In a treatment that we've developed specifically to address this condition, we have combined manual therapy, nutrition therapy and the application of Rebuilder dual-frequency nerve simulator to help patients who are suffering from peripheral neuropathy.

To be specific, when a patient sign up for the program and has been confirmed to be a candidate for the treatment after a thorough evaluation, manual therapy is applied. The manual therapies may include spinal manipulation, massage, stretching and exercise therapy. Keep in mind that these therapies are only applied, when indicated, by licensed healthcare professionals and specifically directed towards biomechanical faults. These are identified during the patient's initial physical examination. **End Summary** Topics: neuropathy peripheral neuropathy hypoxia chronic pain
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of "Living and Practicing by Design" and "Beating Neuropathy".
What are the Common Links in Sensory Neuropathy?

One amazing part that I've discovered while working with Dr. David Phillips is that in all neuropathy cases, regardless of the caused, the common link appears to be Hypoxia.

Hypoxia is a word used to describe loss of oxygen. This is a condition where in whole body or part of the body is deprived of adequate amount of oxygen. It often occurs in the area of the body where nerve cells exchange impulses or what is called neuronal junctions.

The neuronal junction is where nervous impulses pass through. This is a form of electrochemical communication of nerve cells across a gap. In theory, when a patient is suffering from neuropathy due to hypoxia, the neuronal gap between their cells widens and therefore considered to cause some of the common symptoms experience by patients such as numbness, burning sensation, tingling and shooting pains.

According to Dr. Phillips, "Neuropathy and chronic pain is characterized by pain, numbness, loss of tactile feedback, and poor tissue perfusion. These may be indications that oxygen is not reaching all the cells and thus causing dysfunction. **End Summary** Topics: neuropathy peripheral neuropathy hypoxia chronic pain
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of "Living and Practicing by Design" and "Beating Neuropathy".
Peripheral Neuropathy and it's Diagnosis

Peripheral Neuropathy has many types and are classified based on their root causes. Among them include those caused by diabetes, heavy metal toxins, alcoholism, nerve injuries, and medication intake. Other causes are hereditary while others are idiopathic in nature, or those causes that are unknown.

Although peripheral neuropathies vary from one patient to another, symptoms are remarkable similar. Among the common symptoms experienced by patients include loss of sensation, tingling, numberness and sleep disturbance.

Doctors perform thorough evaluation in order to determine the components of a patient's peripheral neuropathy. This will include things such as checking your vital signs, body mass index, the mobility and range of motion of your lower back and hips, and the overall health of your feet, skin, nails and hair, blood vessels and circulation. This could include a simple painless test to check for blood flow or blockages called Doppler ultrasound.

As the doctor performs clinical examination, neurological examination including reflexes, muscle-testing, and sensation to touch using a device as simple as a pin, a brush or perhaps even a pinwheel, will also be conducted. Your vibration sensation which is often disturbed in peripheral neuropathy will also be checked by your doctor. **End Summary** Topics: neuropathy peripheral neuropathy neuropathy diagnosis
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of "Living and Practicing by Design" and "Beating Neuropathy".
Thousands of cases of Peripheral Neuropathy is being recorded every year. It is a very wide spread and had affected million of people in the US alone. But what exactly is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral Neuropathy can be described as a condition characterized by one or all of the following: loss of sensation, tingling, numbness and burning, sleep disturbance and all the other unpleasant sensations that patients who have been diagnosed with this condition (PN) experience. Some patients may experience only one of these many symptoms. However, there are patients that experience all these very bothersome symptoms.

Peripheral Neuropathy is very widespread. In the United State, it has been estimated that around 15 to 20 million patients are suffering from it. What causes Peripheral Neuropathy? It is no longer Diabetes. Many cases are due to unknown causes or whats commonly called idiopathic.

In some cases, Peripheral Neuropathy is caused by medicine intake, post-chemotheraphy, or heavy metal toxicities. More and more people in poor physical shape suffer from the Metabolic Syndrome, where blood sugar and blood lipids (fats) are abnormal. Metabolic Syndrome is now becoming a very common in sedentary and obese society. **End Summary** Topics: neuropathy peripheral neuropathy neuropathy diagnosis
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of "Living and Practicing by Design" and "Beating Neuropathy".
Are You Suffering From Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy patients suffer greatly. Based on the experience of many physicians including myself, peripheral neuropathy patients would often have the symptoms for years but would not seek medical help until the symptoms worsen.

These symptoms initially may include such things as mild loss of sensation of the hands and the feet, progressive worsening of tingling and numbness that will often times wake the patient at night, or completely disturbed sleep.

Also, we find that a lot of neuropathy patients suffer from a combination of these annoying symptoms. Aside from the presence of tingling and numbness, it also includes shooting pains. I have had many patients tell me that one of the most annoying symptoms, especially in colder climates, is the coolness of the feet as well as the (trophic) changes that occur in the skin. Sometimes, the skin would have extreme dryness, cracking, fragility etc.

The diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy really is a diagnosis of exclusion. This is what I always tell the doctors that I work with all the time. It is very important for doctors to be able to perform the most thorough evaluation possible. **End Summary** Topics: neuropathy peripheral neuropathy neuropathy diagnosis
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of "Living and Practicing by Design" and "Beating Neuropathy".
One of the Most Important Tool in Your Arsenal

Everyone of us make decisions daily. However, it is important to note that studies have shown that most people are not very good when it comes to decision making. This is often contrary to what they think.

One of the biggest skills to acquire is effective decision making. The best decisions in life are usually made slowly, ultimately, with dedication, and are unwavering. If you can learn to do this in a well-considered way, then you can lead in anything, to spectacular and well-deserved success.

By definition, a decision is behind every truly great achievement anyone ever makes. The most successful of people tend to make decisions quickly and, once made, seldom change them. They stick with the decisions they have made. Failures, on the other hand, are very slow to make any decision at all (most never make any), and they often change the ones they have made very rapidly indeed.

Decision making is a process of first diverging to explore the possibilities and then converging on a solution. The Latin root of the word decision means "to cut off from all alternatives". This is what you should do when you decide. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
Planning for Success

One of the best strategies in ensuring success in private practice is implementing a step-by-step game plan consisting of what to do and when to do it. Doctors often ask: "Can you please tell me what to do next?" There is a formula that I use. And with some effort, you can also come up with your own implementation game plan.

Let's do this step by step.

1. The very first thing is to outline in writing exactly what it is you want to accomplish and produce. Yes, that's right. Your goals and targets. The more precise you can be, the better will be the results. Doctor, do not overlook this vital step. In private practice, you are the CEO, CFO, Marketing Manger, and, most often, the Team Captain. If your behavior is not congruent with these roles, success will always elude you in private practice. This is a very powerful lesson that way too many ignore. You can be the best clinician ever, but private practice success and fulfillment require much more skills. Always keep in mind that the rewards are so much better when you operate at this highest of levels. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
A timely outlook on establishing a phenomenal practice that provides a lifetime of patient value and continuous income.

In retrospect, about a year after writing about Commanders of Change as a progressive new breed of doctors, I did not realize how prophetic it would be. The most successful doctors in private practice that we see today are making their own changes and continuously improving themselves and their practices. All of it despite the happenings in the outside world. They have clearly learned to Practice by Design.

On the other hand, those that are unsuccessful in private practice are actually practicing by default.

It's no secret that your patient's lives are very different now too. Beyond just an election year uncertainty, entire pillars of American society are facing changes that come very, very quickly.

So here's the simple choice: Learn new systems, grow, and become more patient-centric while reinventing your practice, yourself, and your future.

Or do nothing and hope that things will continue to be like they used to be. Either way, know that it is a decision that will leave a lasting effect on your entire life.

I am not telling you it's easy, far from it. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
If you find yourself asking this question, even once, in the past week, Doctor, then there is something wrong, broken, or absent in your practice's game plan. If you have implemented the strategies at Perfect Practice Web in the past three years, your practice and, indeed, your personal life should be a fortress. The events of this year would have little effect on you, except to listen to those who reach out and want to learn the secret of why YOU are so happy.

Your practice is strong. Your investments are more valuable than ever and you continue to lead your team in eager anticipation of a brighter future.

If this is not happening, then a really critical appraisal of EVERY system in your practice and, probably, even your personal life is long overdue. This analysis should be done every six months anyways, at a minimum.

Here are some important issues to consider right now.

Have you made your patient care plans simple and understandable? Or are they confused? And when payment time comes, do they usually say: "Let me think about it." "I can't really pay for THAT at the moment. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .

Lately, I've been having a very unique run of days. The latest of my many recent life adventures started with a cross-country flight to Seattle, and the beginning of an incredible journey. Here's how it all began.

My father in law, who is now 84, has been raving about Alaska since I met him 35 years ago while dating my wife, Patti. He spent some considerable time here while in the Navy, and was even here during the great earthquake of '64. That entire experience stayed with him for life. I can't tell you how many times he has told us we have to go to Alaska. Now, this is from someone who has worked and traveled the globe extensively.

In 2007, you may remember, my brothers and I took my dad back to Ireland. That was a phenomenal journey in which we rented a home on a 130-acre farm and traveled all over about one-third of the country. Right after that trip, we vowed to take Patti's dad back to Alaska. So here I am!

Our first night on board, the sun set just before 10, and last light was about 11. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .

Those who continue to be very successful in private practice have an ever evolving vision about the way they want their life to be and then carefully design the way they want their practices to support their personal goals and dreams.

Never before have there been more simultaneous changes facing those amongst us who continue to choose the private ownership of a viable business, the entrepreneurial pathway.

Make no mistake about it. Private practice today is not for the indecisive or faint of heart. There are far easier ways of making a living.

The question then becomes: Why would anyone pick this more difficult road over other and, in many respects, far easier paths?

In my opinion and experience as a private practrice owner of many years and, currently, as a consultant, those who continue to find success fully recognize the immense rewards that can only come from ownership and being wholly in-charge.

Indeed, it is that same spirit that drives anybody that strives to stay on top in any worthwhile chosen endeavor. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .

Last week, I wrote extensively on really taking command of the direction of your practice and your life as a powerful economic stimulus. In reality, it's all you have in private practice. There are some really simple ways to do this. But before we talk about that, here's an "Economic Summit" reality check-up.

If I told you, right now, there are doctors like you doing seven figures cash per year, would you believe me? If not, why?

Likely, it's due to a very limited worldview on what you can really accomplish with all the correct systems and tools. More often than not, this is so defeating, especially when it occurs early in one's career.

If I also told you Concierge MDs are collecting 10-15k per patient per year, cash, and these same patients gladly pay and, in fact, request that type of healthcare while also paying health insurance premiums, what does that say about how you value and price your services?

A better alternative is to use an Excel spreadsheet since it will allow you to graph it easily and tweak it in all sorts of ways. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
How A Changing World Affects Personal Power, Profit and Influence

The absence of personal power, profit and influence in your own life and practice can have the following consequences: You will be less likely to learn from the past, deal with the present and plan, as accurately as possible, for the future. But just why are these so important?

One of my fascinations as a consultant comes from dealing with the vast differences in how people view the world, as well as their own professions. Even more fascinating is how they respond to the wide variety of situations we are all presented with every day. Now, this is something I've written on extensively during the last three years and continue to research on almost on a daily basis.

Of course, there are many reasons for these vast differences even amongst similar groups of people like DCs, MDs, DMDs, JDs, etc. There is no denying that there are biologic and even genetic responses. Some are cultural. Some are environmental. And lets not forget education and professional training. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
The Time to Do Everything

Time is a commodity that we only have finite amount of. It's amazing how some can use it so well with phenomenal results. For others, even basic functions seem to elude them. There are those who are able to parcel out time to the different parts of their lives that success and growth seems to just migrate to them. Others seem to chase one thing after another and ends up not having enough time to accomplish anything.

Keys to time management. Are there really any keys to doing more with the time we have? Yes! And it's not nearly as difficult as you may think. What I want to discuss is a very simple time management system I suggest you try. You only need a black pen and 2 or 3 white legal pads. How much time is this going to cost you? This will just take up a few minutes every day but it will save you countless hours of wasted effort and time. Why two or three white legal pads and a black ink pen? Black ink stands out well and is easy to read against a white background. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
Don't Wait for Tomorrow

While reading the Sunday paper, I was painfully reminded of the fragility of a professional life that can teach us all a valuable lesson. As you know, Perfect Practice advocates building your life first, and your practice to follow suit. We talk about this extensively in the first module called "The End in Mind." It discussed about your close friend, spouse and family who knows your passions as a health care provider and how you incorporate them (or fail to) into your personal life every week.

The story was about an executive, 58 years old, who built a very significant company, with tons of time, travel and a grueling schedule. He takes very little time off because he thought he can later enjoy his life when he retires.

Unfortunately, retirement never came. He died of brain cancer in 90 days. He reflected back in his last days, even writing a book encouraging his colleagues not to follow in his footsteps.

Life is brief, with no second chances. So many times, I have seen clients and friends go down this very same road.

Here are other true stories that have touched my life a few months back. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
What Is It That Makes Your Practice Unique?

Most people think that their practice is unique but they never really look at what they do that makes it one. In general, you get better results on some techniques than on others. Have you looked at which techniques and treatments are most effective for you? Probably, quite a bit, because the beauty of private practice is that you tailor it to your likes, dislikes, hours, procedures, etc. Do you use these successes in all of your marketing and networking? Extraordinary practices communicate these to their patients and their community by effective positioning. But most offices never effectively communicate these, and thus they leave a tremendous marketing opportunity on the table. I am not talking about big buck campaigns here. These are just simply what your staff and your patients should perceive, as to why they should be in your practice and refer patients to YOU!

Mission statements

Do you have a mission statement that clearly states what your practice is about and where it's going? Have you applied this statement to all of your policies, marketing, employee policies, patient policies and decision-making. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
Returning To Basic Marketing

We recently celebrated our 28th anniversary in our private chiropractic practice. In celebration, we held a simple event and invited our new and old patients, as well as other people in our community.

We started early getting the word out. With the use of systems that we advocate, a month before the event, my staff sent out press releases to several newspapers. Local newspapers published a brief story and history of our practice before the event. Then another one was published again after the said event.

Aside from the press releases, we also composed a very brief one and a half page letter, which told the story of how my life was changed by a DC back when I was just a college student. I have also included a simple expression of my gratitude to all patients that I had the privilege of caring for throughout my career. I mailed one to everybody in our list.

A week prior to the event, my staff busied themselves decorating the office and putting up fliers. After that they got on the phone with a selected group of patients to spread the word about the event. **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
You Can Be Successful Too

Recently, I had been asking myself about the real differences between doctors who are wildly successful and those who struggle year after year in practice. It's actually becoming more and more frequent now as private health care environment harshens.

The thought really hits me hard after I listened back to my most recent webinar on Perfect Practice for prospective members. To be honest, I sometimes wonder what makes those who take our programs, implement and follow them and become successful different than those who don't.

One morning, after a fabulous outing at a local yacht club, it hit me again why anyone would even expect to be successful, or better yet become truly independent, without careful attention to every aspect and area of business, success and personal achievement.

At first, I thought about this at some length on my way home early that morning. I put it aside until a little later on, and then the differences became readily apparent. The answers came to me with blinding simplicity. So, I listed the top three reasons why people fail to thrive in practice. And you know what? Its just three things! **End Summary** Topics: chiropractic medicine chiropractic practice medical practice practice building
About the Author:
Dr. John Hayes, Jr. is an Evvy Award Nominee and author of Living and Practicing by Design .
