What is better to lose weight - a diet or exercise?

Leading research shows that weight can be lost through both diet and exercise. In fact, exercise induced weight loss in pure terms has less of an effect than a diet if taken in isolation. However, the big difference is the fact that exercise burns fat yet preserves muscle mass whereas diets cause the loss of both muscle and fat- meaning that when the diet is stopped the weight is likely to return because the muscle is not there to burn energy.

This is why it is so critical to have exercise as part of a weight loss regime, while continuing to eat a healthy, moderate diet. In order to burn more calories than you are putting in, you need to both exercise more and put less energy in (food!).

So how much exercise do I need to keep the weight off?

The latest university research in the United States (2007) shows that adult males and females should be doing at least 30 minutes of exercise per day at a moderate intensity, to maintain weight. The intensity should be in the fat burning zone (around 50% to 70% of your maximum heart rate- see earlier article titled Fat Burning”). **End Summary** Topics: diet exercise lose weight how to lose weight diets
About the Author:
Australian Lifestyle & Fitness is an online weight loss company that creates online weight loss programs to help you <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au" title="lose weight">lose weight</a> .
Many people are full of motivation when the start a fitness program. Generally they will join a gym and have a fitness program written by a personal trainer and get locked into long term contracts. Fitness programs don’t need to be difficult. A fitness program should be fun, and something that you want to do long term. Before commencing any fitness program though, it is advisable to consult your doctor if you haven’t exercised for a long time or you have any existing conditions.

Tip 1. Buddy Up

When starting a fitness program people can often get discouraged as they have generally not been exercising for some time. The first few workouts can be very difficult until your body gets used to exercising again. Having a friend by your side can make it fun and you can both encourage each other. People who exercise long term usually do as they make it social and fun.

Tip 2. Choose a sport or activity you enjoy

If you don’t like running, then don’t run. Choose something that you like doing. I have clients that like rock climbing, however he doesn’t have time to get out and climb very often. **End Summary** Topics: fitness program fitness plans
About the Author:
Michael Jenkins is the owner of Australian Lifestyle & Fitness which is an online weight loss and fitness company.
Which weight loss programs wor best?

With so many weight loss programs in the market these days it can become very difficult to work out which one to go for. The reality is most of these weight loss programs will work, however it is a matter of working out which one will work best for you. The bad news is that there are no magical program that will make all your weight just drop off, but there certainly are many options that do work.

Weight loss programs can be broken down into 4 areas. These weight loss programs include:
-	diet/weight loss pills
-	meal replacements
-	fad diets or weight loss programs
-	long term lifestyle weight loss programs.

Diet pills have become very popular in the last 10 years and certainly to some degree have shown success. Diet pills work by three different means: appetite suppressant, increased metabolism rate or decreased fat solubility. The problem is that no diet pill is without side effects. These can range from stomach cramps to diarrhoea and nausea. Without proper nutrition they can be quite dangerous and so as far as weight loss programs go it they are not a great idea. **End Summary** Topics: weight loss programs diets lose weight
About the Author:
At Australian Lifestyle & Fitness we understand that <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/diets/" title="diets">diets</a> are difficult to follow.
The Psychology of losing weight

Mind set is a huge part of successful weight loss. Having the correct thought patterns can make your weight loss journey sustainable long term. The reason for this is that when you create a shift in your thinking, you create a shift in your habits. Staying positive is critical. The fact is that it is difficult to lose weight. It is even more difficult to lose weight and keep it off. Thatâ€'s why laying the foundations, and creating the correct mental tool kit it critical. Letâ€'s explore how people lose weight and keep it off long term by shaping the correct habits.
Below are some effective weight management tools you can use to start to lose weight. These have been based on the success of hundreds of successful case studies.
1.	Eat slowly and stop eating before you get full. This might sound overly simplistic; however it has been found in a study of 3000 adults conducted by The British Medical Journal that people who eat too fast and also eat till they are full are up to three times more likely to put on weight than those who eat slowly. **End Summary** Topics: lose weight how to lose weight lose weight fast
About the Author:
At Australian Lifestyle & Fitness we understand that it can be difficult and confusing to follow <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/diets/" title="Diets">Diets</a> .
Understanding BMI

When dealing with obesity, or any other kind of weight problems, certain numbers measuring the ratio of a personâ€'s weight and height will come up. The body mass index (BMI) is one of the most recognized and reliable indicators used today to identify possible weight problems. It is a scale system that applies to both men and women, regardless of age or frame size. On the other hand, when it comes to children and teens, the interpretation of BMI is both age- and sex-specific.

BMI is an inexpensive and practical screening tool used to measure body fat. The simple calculations are indirect and should not be viewed as a professional diagnostic tool. If a person shows a high BMI, he or she should consult a healthcare provider for further assessment. This may include skin-fold thickness measurements, diet evaluations, physical activity, family history review, and other appropriate health screening evaluations.

Using the metric system, the formula for BMI is weight (kilograms) divided by height (meters) squared. Formula: weight (kg) / [height (m)]2. Imperial system users can calculate their BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and then multiplied by a conversion factor of 703. **End Summary** Topics: BMI BMI calculator Body Mass Index healthy weight
About the Author:
At Australian Lifestyle & Fitness we know that weight management and achieving a healthy <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/BMICalculator.asp" title="BMI">BMI</a>

People today are fixated on diets, and all have their own personal reasons to show for. Some feel they are at an unhealthy weight level, and need to pay closer attention to their food consumption and exercise habits, while others, like many celebrities, are obsessed with their appearance and think they have to look thin to be fascinating and attractive. Their drive often goes too far, providing a bad example for teenagers, who may get the impression that anorexia is cool, which it is not!

On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with a deep commitment if the dieters reasons are valid, which may be the case for a number of them. These people have no choice but to watch the scale, because if they dont the excess weight will affect their health badly and may even kill them. People who are at risk for, or suffer from ailments such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, osteoarthritis, and some forms of cancer need to monitor their food intake closely and usually will also have to incorporate a suitable exercise program. **End Summary** Topics: diets healthy diets weight loss diets popular diets fad diet
About the Author:
At Australian Lifestyle & Fitness we know that weight management and <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/diets/" title="Diets">Diets</a> can often be difficult and confusing, so our goal is to give you a weight loss plan and easy to follow <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/diets/" title="Diets">Diets</a> to lose help you lose weight and keep it off.

Successful Weight Loss For Life

There are many ways to lose weight, including a myriad of different diets, each with a specific goal. When deciding on a basic diet for your weight loss, you may find that there are several theories about what you should, and should not, eat. Indeed, your food intake will largely be determined by the diet you choose.
Most popular diets will fall into one of four major categories: low fat, low carbohydrate, high protein and vegetarian. Low fat diets involve reducing your fat intake and calories. There are more than twice as many calories in fat as there are in carbohydrates or protein, and since high fat diets are linked to many diseases, a low fat regime has value even beyond weight loss.

Low carb diets (also called reduced carbohydrate”, controlled carbohydrate”, or "low glycemic" diets) are eating plans that advise limiting the consumption of foods high in carbohydrates. High protein diets are often recommended by bodybuilders and nutritionists to help build muscle and lose fat. Emerging research has hinted that protein may be able to satisfy hunger better than either fats, or carbohydrates, and therefore can be part of particular weight loss plans. **End Summary** Topics: Weight loss natural weight loss healthy weight loss BMI
About the Author:
At Australian Lifestyle & Fitness we know that <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/diets/" title="Diets">Diets</a> and <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au" title="weight loss">weight loss</a> can often be difficult and confusing, so our goal is to give you a weight loss plan that will make it easy to <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au"title="lose weight">lose weight</a> .

Focusing on a Low-GI Diet Plan

Making positive, healthy lifestyle changes and finding effective weight loss solutions does not necessarily mean you have to cut back on food. Simply eating foods higher in soluble fiber can make a difference and many people are embracing this concept with open arms. Therefore it comes to no surprise that diets based on Low Glycemic Index have become a hot topic among celebrities, athletes and regular folks who want to lose weight, or are concerned about their health.

Glycemic Index or GI is a ranking system for carbohydrates, and how quickly they will burn and metabolize in your body. It is based on their effect on blood glucose levels and compares available carbohydrates in individual foods. Subsequently, a Low Glycemic Index diet focuses on eating foods that are more slowly digested by the body. For instance, instead of eating white bread, you would eat whole wheat bread and white pasta could be served, topped with some cheese or a meat sauce, which would also slow down the digestion of carbohydrates.

Following a Low-Glycemic Index diet lowers cholesterol, and clears up acne. It will help prevent macular degeneration and may decrease the risk of developing breast, colon and lung cancer. **End Summary** Topics: diets low GI diets low gi low glycemic index lose weight
About the Author:
At Australian Lifestyle & Fitness we know that <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au" title="losing weight">losing weight</a> and <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/diets/" title="Diets">Diets</a> can often be difficult and confusing, so our goal is to give you a weight loss plan that will make it easy to <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au"title="lose weight">lose weight</a> .

Obesity is one of those hot topics constantly receiving in-depth attention from the media. No wonder, with modern-day stress levels rising, and fast food more convenient than ever, especially for people with busy jobs, little free time, and those frequently traveling. Add all the chemicals and growth hormones that are being mixed into some foods and soon you realize that it comes to no surprise that countless people find themselves overweight. They are consuming unhealthy foods with the wrong types of calories per meal, maintain bad eating habits, and spend little or no time on fitness activities.

There are several weight loss diet plans that are designed to assist just about anyone lose weight. Be it a high protein or vegetarian diet, or possibly a low GI weight loss program, they all have several elements that overlap. For example, fast weight loss programs all stress exercising regularly and drinking lots of water. They also vigorously urge dieters never to skip meals, which would be absolutely the worst thing anyone trying to lose weight could do. Missing meals can force a body into a starvation mode”, causing it to hang on to the weight participants are actually trying to lose. **End Summary** Topics: lose weight losing weight how to lose weight loose weight
About the Author:
At Australian Lifestyle & Fitness we know that <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/diets/" title="Diets">Diets</a> and achieving a healthy <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/BMICalculator.asp" title="BMI">BMI</a>

Healthy and Natural Weight Loss

Physicians and dieticians will confirm that losing weight is not an easy process. If it is done right, in a healthy and sustainable way, it may require eating habit changes, and it will most likely, not happen overnight.

Like gaining weight, which manifests itself often gradually, a healthy weight loss should happen equally slow. Crash diets are quick fixes and usually do not keep the weight off for long. These diets are good if you need to lose a few pounds fast to get into a wedding dress, or a revealing beach outfit, but are not the preferred weight loss tactic if you want to achieve a healthy, sensible weight managing lifestyle.

A natural diet is the best way to lose weight and keep it off. That means, opting for proper nutrition and a sensible food intake, which includes three small main meals a day and two snacks in between. Every diet expert will agree that having just one or two large meals a day is unhealthy. Our body needs a steady flow of fuel and energy, just like your car does, or your alarm clock. Confused? Picture, the electricity goes off! **End Summary** Topics: Weight loss natural weight loss healthy weight loss BMI
About the Author:
At Australian Lifestyle & Fitness we know that <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au" title="weight loss">Weight Loss</a> and achieving a healthy <a href="http://www.alfitness.com.au/BMICalculator.asp" title="BMI">BMI</a>

When getting started with a calorie counting plan because of a weight loss program, you first need to find out what you are currently eating. Successful weight management programs often start by asking you to keep records of everything you consume, even if you plan a vegetarian diet. This can be particularly helpful in finding areas where your eating habits need to be improved. These plans challenge you to find out where you can make easy changes you can sustain, and point out where you may encounter difficulties.
A few weeks with a diet journal can be a valuable experience in understanding how many calories you consume each day. Keeping track of your food intake, and watching the calorie counter is not going to make you lose weight. It only informs you about your eating habits, which will have to be modified, if you want to book results.

Fitness and health experts will tell you that active women will use about 2500 calories, while men require 3000 calories a day. These numbers will fluctuate depending on age, activity level, or if a person is exercising, and how much. **End Summary** Topics: BMI Body Mass Index BMI Calculator

The media constantly barrages us about new diseases and alarming medical findings. Reporters, physicians and scientists alike bring us disturbing results of the latest research almost daily, and confront us with health issues we may never even have thought of. If it was not for them, we would probably ignore definite and important warning signs and not worry so much about our physique, what we eat, and how much we exercise.

A healthy weight assessment is recommended by anyone who works for, or is interested in, fitness and the well-being of mankind. That means keeping track of how much people weigh, and what it does to their bodies.
BMI and its association to health risks

In diagnostics, Body Mass Index (BMI) is an essential value for correlating a personâ€'s height and weight with medical health risk. These assessments are quite important in todayâ€'s world, especially considering the steadily growing number of overweight people, and experts worldwide stating that these high values do not appear to be slowing down. This fact is becoming more and more alarming and gives us the forewarning that mankindâ€'s future is at stake!

Body Mass Index values have to be calculated regularly and always considered when managing oneâ€'s health. BMI is widely used in health studies, because it is the only body fat index available today that can convey the risks of disease or death associated with uncontrollable weight increase.

A lot of health problems can be avoided if a personâ€'s body mass remains in the ‘normalâ€' or acceptable” range. With all of todayâ€'s available technology, there is no longer an excuse not to monitor oneâ€'s body mass. For adults, the guidelines are relatively straightforward, as the BMI of any person who is not pregnant, or devastated by certain illnesses, will fall into one of these categories endorsed by authorities:

-	Below 18.5 means you are underweight
