How To Tune A Violin Correctly

Knowing how to tune a violin is an essential first step when learning violin. If you do not tune your violin properly, the music you attempt to play will never sound quite right. Learning to play the violin is difficult enough and having your violin out of tune will make it that much more challenging and downright frustrating.

There are a couple of methods of tuning a violin. You can use a tuner that is attached to the E string only or you can have four fine tuners for the E, G, D and A strings on the tailpiece. When using the E string tuner only, your violin will have some type of synthetic strings such as gut or perlon. On the other hand, if your violin has metal core stings, you will want to use the four fine tuners and your pegs for tuning. Otherwise, it will be extremely difficult to tune all strings with just an E-string tuner.

Synthetic core strings are easier to tune with just the one tuner because as you turn the peg, the string core stretches and the pitch moves slowly. **End Summary** Topics: how to tune a violin tuning a violin tune violin learn violin learn to play violin learning violin
About the Author:
For more information, please go to How to Tune a Violin at our Learn Violin community blog.

Nook vs Kindle Review - Which Is The Best Ereader?

The Barnes and Noble Nook vs Amazon Kindle is an ongoing debate between two popular ebook readers. Which one is best? Both are in a very tight race with each other with feature upgrades and pricing, but there are a few differences between the two.

If you will primarily be using an ereader to read books, then the first feature you would want to examine is the display. Both the Nook and Kindle 3 use E-Ink technology. Basically, it's high-tech digital ink that is the closest thing to looking like paper in an electronic gadget. One notable difference is that Amazon, being the tech leader in the ebook reader world, uses the latest generation of E-Ink, called Pearl. Barnes and Noble uses an older version on the Nook. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this is upgraded in the future.

The next thing you would want to consider is the types of files you can download and read on your ereader. Both can read pdf, mp3 and various photo files such as jpg, gif and others. The main difference is with ebook files. The Nook can read EPUB files, which is the standard public format. **End Summary** Topics: nook vs kindle ereader comparsion ebook reader comparison kindle 3 nook color nook vs kindle review compare nook and kindle
About the Author:
For more information, view the Nook vs Kindle Review or our complete eReader Comparison Chart for Nook vs Kindle vs Sony vs iPad.

Nikon Monarch Binoculars Review

Nikon Monarch binoculars are a favorite among bird watchers and many outdoor enthusiasts because you get a lot for your money compared to other binocular models at the mid-price level. In fact, the Monarchs have some of the same features that higher-priced models have, especially the better quality optics.

The latest model of the Monarchs have several improvements. One that stands out is the new dielectric prism coating. This high-reflective, multi-layer prism coating; formerly only used on the higher end Nikon EDG binoculars, provides a brighter, crisper image of birds and wildlife with sharper colors and is especially helpful during low-light conditions such as at dusk or dawn. Monarch always had good optics, but now this improvement alone is worth the purchase.

Their ATB line, which stands for All-Terrain-Binoculars, provides durability and ruggedness that can withstand all your outdoor birding activities. All the ATB models are nitrogen-purged making them 100% waterproof and fog-proof which is a necessity for most bird watching and really any outdoor wildlife watching activity. It is possible to purchase Monarchs at a cheaper price that are not waterproof or fog-proof, but it is not recommended. **End Summary** Topics: nikon monarch binoculars birdwatching binoculars birding binoculars nikon binoculars best binoculars bird watching hunting binoculars 8x42 binoculars
About the Author:
For a comparison of all Nikon Monarch models, go to Nikon Monarch Binoculars or review how to choose the Best Birdwatching Binoculars .

Bird Watching Binoculars - Choosing the Best Magnification

What magnification should you choose for bird watching binoculars? It all depends on your needs as a bird watcher and what type of birding you mostly will be doing. Let us review some magnification basics.

When you start shopping for bird watching binoculars, you will first notice that they come in different sizes. They will be designated by two numbers such as 8x42. The first number is the magnification or how many times closer the bird you are watching will appear through your binoculars. So in the 8x42 pair, a bird will appear eight times closer than with your naked eye.

The first obvious response from beginning birders when shopping for birding binoculars is to get a pair with the highest magnification. Why would I get a lower magnification when I can see the bird that much closer with a higher power binocular? This is bird watching not astronomy star gazing that is why.

As a good rule of thumb, you do not want to buy a pair of binoculars for bird watching over a magnification of ten. If you need more magnification, then consider getting a bird watching spotting scope with a tripod or window mount. **End Summary** Topics: bird watching binoculars binoculars for bird watching birding binoculars birdwatching binoculars binoculars bird watching
About the Author:
For more information, please go to Bird Watching Binoculars 101 and read our binocular review by price level of the Best Birding Binoculars .

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder - Win the War

The best squirrel proof bird feeder has to be smarter than a squirrel. It must thwart all attempts of those crafty mammals stealing your wild bird seed from your beloved backyard bird feeders. A squirrel's wit and perseverance should never be underestimated.

There are spinning squirrel proof bird feeders, ones enclosed in wire cages, those that have feeder ports that shut when the weight of a squirrel sits upon them and so on. The Brome Squirrel Buster Plus is one of the best feeders for doing the job. There are even those that shock the squirrels, but really is going overboard and is unnecessary. I mean they are squirrels; we should be able to figure this out without using torturous means, right?

Let us review some basic squirrel proofing techniques. First off, squirrels can jump really far. So if you place your bird feeder next to any structures such as trees, sheds, fences you will need to keep at least ten feet of distance between them and the feeder.

The next thing to use to fend off squirrels is placing a squirrel baffle on your feeder. **End Summary** Topics: squirrel proof bird feeder squirrel proof wild bird feeder squirrel buster bird feeder squirrel proof bird seed squirrel proof pole
About the Author:
For more information, please go to our squirrel proof bird feeder and squirrel baffle review pages.

Humminbird Portable Fish Finder Review of the 110, 120, 130 and 140 Fishin' Buddy Models

The Humminbird portable fish finder Fishin' Buddy series currently has several models for purchase. They include, in ascending price, the Hummingbird 110, 120, 130 and 140 model units. As the model number and subsequent price increases, there are subsequent additional features that the lower models lack.

All models, except for the 110, have both a single beam down and side sonar at 240 feet and 120 feet, respectively. All have the same power output at 125 watts RMS (roots mean square) and 1,000 watts, peak to peak. They all have a built in temperature gauge, are waterproof, have a backlight, mount with a portable clamp, have a target separation of 2.5 inches and run on 6 AA batteries. Now let us discuss the differences between all 4 models.

The Humminbird 110 Fishin' Buddy is the most basic unit of the series at an entry level price. The current manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) is $119.99. For just under $120 you will have a portable fish finder that will find fish, but not have all the bells and whistles of the more advanced models. **End Summary** Topics: humminbird fishin buddy review humminbird portable fish finder humminbird 110 humminbird 120 humminbird 130 humminbird 140
About the Author:
For more information about the Humminbird 110, 120, 130 and 140 models, go to Humminbird Fishin Buddy Review at our Portable Fish Finder Reviews site.

Bluebird House Plans For Mountain, Western and Eastern Bluebirds

There are several kinds of bluebird house plans that you can use to build a nest box. Depending upon where you live, you will be building a house for either an Eastern Bluebird, Mountain Bluebird or Western Bluebird. Or, where the ranges overlap with Eastern Bluebirds, you can build a bluebird house that will accommodate both species.

The basic bluebird house design can be made from one 1"x6"x4' and one 1"x10"x10.5" piece of untreated and unpainted wood. From these two boards, you will make cuts for the roof, floor, two sides and the front and back panels. Several different bird house designs for bluebirds include the Gilbertson, Peterson, Carl Little and Dandr nest box plans.

One major difference between making a bird house for Eastern Bluebirds versus one for Mountain or Western Bluebirds is the entrance hole size. For the former, you want your hole diameter to be either a 1/2 inch round hole or a 1 3/8 x 2 1/4 inch vertical oval hole whereas the Western or Mountain Bluebird requires a slightly larger round hole size of 1 9/16 inches or use the same vertical oval size as Eastern. **End Summary** Topics: bluebird house plans free bird house plans eastern bluebird western bluebird bird house designs
About the Author:
For more information, please go to bluebird house plans and free bird house plans .

Bird House Plans - How To Build A Nest Box For Different Species

Bird house plans can vary according to which species you wish to attract to nest in your backyard. There are nest box plans specific for bluebirds, wrens, chickadees and purple martins. Each bird house design consists of a roof, sides and bottom, but there can be different dimensions for each species.

For wrens you can use either a 4-inch by 4 or 6-inch floor with 8 inch walls. The hole should be centered six inches above the floor with a diameter of 1 1/8". For bluebirds, use a 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" floor, ten inch walls with a 1 1/2" centered hole six inches above the floor. If you make your holes larger, house sparrows and starlings will be able to enter the house and take over the bird house and sometimes even kill the adults and/or nestlings.

Bird house plans should not include placing a perch on the nest box. This will invite potential predators, such as aforementioned house sparrows and starlings as well as raccoons, cats and snakes, and enable them to easily find a way into the house. **End Summary** Topics: bird house plans bird house designs bluebird house plans wren house plans purple martin bird house
About the Author:
For more information about building bird houses, please go to Free Bird House Plans and Bird House Dimensions .

How to Choose the Best Bird Watching Spotting Scopes

Bird watching spotting scopes can range in price from $200 to $5,000. So what is the difference between a cheap scope and an expensive one? The expense mostly is in the lens design and lens quality. Other features such as being waterproof, fogproof and shockproof also play into the price.

You may be wondering what makes a good bird watching spotting scope compared to any other spotting scope. These type of scopes are not used for looking at stars. You want a birding scope to see birds at long distances like viewing shorebirds or falcons in their nest on a cliff face. You need a scope to view details on birds that your bird watching binoculars cannot provide mostly because of the longer distance and inability to get closer.

Magnification is the first thing you want to consider in choosing your scope. Do not get a scope with a magnification lower than 15x because that is what your binoculars will provide. You typically do not want to go over 60x magnification on the high end because the field of view becomes very narrow and the image brightness deteriorates.

The objective lens is the next thing you want to consider. **End Summary** Topics: bird watching spotting scopes spotting scopes reviews best spotting scope bird spotting scope
About the Author:
For more information, go to Best Bird Watching Spotting Scopes and Spotting Scopes Reviews , the best sources for wild bird seed as well as free bird feeder plans to build your own feeders.

With all the new ereaders on the market competing with each other, it may help you to review their features through an ebook reader comparison. When Amazon came out with their Kindle wireless reading device, there really were no comparable digital readers on the market, but other manufacturers are now competing for the wireless crowd of readers.

Let us first tackle the two ebook reader versions offered by Amazon. There is the Kindle International version and the Kindle DX. The main differences is the current Kindle DX only has 3G wireless capability in the U.S. whereas the International version is available now in over 100 countries. The Kindle DX also is larger in both screen size and capacity. The DX has a nine inch screen, whereas the normal Kindle only has a six inch screen. The Kindle DX also has a larger memory size and can hold 3,500 books versus only 1,500 books in the Global Kindle.

A fairly new competitor is the Barnes and Noble Nook ereader. It has a lot of the same features as the Kindle Global version with a few added features. **End Summary** Topics: ebook reader comparison ereader comparison ebook reader review sony reader barnes noble nook
About the Author:
For more information, view our Ebook Reader Comparison Chart at our Ereader Review site.

RV Awning Tips For Purchasing and Using Your New RV Accessory

An RV awning adds that extra bit of comfort during your journey on the road. As you may already have discovered, shade is not always accessible at your destination and having your very own sheltered patio is surely a nice luxury. When it is a hot day, no one wants to sit out in the direct sunlight, so the next best thing to a grove of shade trees is your very own RV awning.

Your RV awning will not only provide a cool area to sit outside, but also decreases the temperature inside your RV up to 15 degrees or more. As an added bonus, an awning can also be adorned with lights and used for nighttime meals and social gatherings. When purchasing RV awing lights, make sure they are made from shatterproof polycarbonate and UL approved for outdoor use.

RV awnings permanently stay attached once installed for convenience and can either be open and closed manually or by the push of a button with a motorized retractable awning. There are even high tech awnings that have an anemometer input. **End Summary** Topics: rv awning rv awning repair rv awning mats rv awning parts rv awning lights domestic rv awning
About the Author:
Please visit RV Awning Guide for more information and tips.

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder - Stop The Madness!

If you are looking for a squirrel proof bird feeder that actually works, you need to look for certain features. First, not all squirrel proof feeders do the job as many of you bird watchers know. Squirrels are highly intelligent, crafty little beings that are determined to crack the squirrel proof code and steal your bird seed.

Before even putting up your squirrel-free feeder, let us start by setting up a defensive feeding environment and implement all available strategies. Did you know that squirrels are excellent jumpers, 10 feet plus? So if there is any kind of launching pad within 10 feet of your feeder, for example, fences, rooftops, trees, assume they will make it to your feeder.

Squirrels will chew your wooden feeder to bits. You will need a feeder that at the very least has metal reinforced feeding ports. Also place baffles below and above your feeder to keep squirrels out. You must take every measure possible to discourage this most determined, undaunted mammal. One thing not to do is grease mounting poles unless you know you are using a non-toxic substance and that animals will not be harmed if the substance gets on them. **End Summary** Topics: squirrel proof bird feeder squirrel proof feeder squirrel free feeder best squirrel proof feeder
About the Author:
Here are some more tips about choosing a squirrel proof bird feeder so that your bird seed is for feeding the birds, not crafty squirrels.

Bird House Plans - How To Know Which Design Is Best

When choosing bird house plans to build a nest box, it is important to know that the type of design will attract as well as inhibit certain bird species from using it. The dimensions of the bird house and especially the hole size will determine who will use your bird house or not. For example, an Eastern Bluebird house should have a hole size of 1 1/2 inches in diameter, while a Purple Martin bird house needs to have a hole size of 2 1/4 inches.

The construction materials of the nest box should be made from natural wood. If you would like to paint or stain the outside of the bird house, use light colors to keep the inside of the box as cool as possible. Do not use stains or paints on the interior of the bird house walls.

You will need to protect your bird house and its occupants from predators. Cats, squirrels, raccoons and other mammals would love to get a hold of the eggs and nestlings inside. To prevent predation, do not place a perch on the bird house because that just makes it easier for something to get into the nest box. **End Summary** Topics: bird house plans bluebird house plans free bird house plans build a bird house nest box plans
About the Author:
You can get a variety of Free Bird House Plans , including designs for Purple Martins, Wood Ducks, Kestrels, Bluebird House Plans and more.

Antler Hunting - When, Where and How?

Antler hunting can be fun for the whole family, a good way to get some exercise, a way to spend a day in the field with your dog in the off season and can be an opportunity to find a record breaking profitable shed.

Each summer, big game animals such as elk, deer and moose grow new antlers prior to the breeding season (autumn). These antlers are shed (or fall off) during late winter or early spring.

When are antlers shed? Mule deer shed usually shed their antlers in January and February. Elk usually shed their antlers in February or March, and they usually shed at higher elevation, but both species can retain antlers into April.

So where is the best place for antler hunting? Well where do the deer, elk and moose spend the most time during the late winter/early Spring when they would be shedding their antlers?

Mule deer usually use open sagebrush areas where the snow is not very deep. Elk usually use South-facing slopes and feeding areas. Moose usually stay in riparian areas. **End Summary** Topics: antler hunting shed antlers deer antler growth antlers for sale deer antlers moose antlers
About the Author:
Please visit our Antler Hunting page for more information and tips including state laws and using dogs as well as viewing deer, moose, caribou and other antlers for sale .

New Amazon Kindle 2 Review

The new Amazon Kindle 2 has been upgraded to make reading on the go even more enjoyable. For those who never heard of the Kindle because you have been living in a black hole, it is a wireless reading device, or ebook reader, that can download wirelessly all kinds of reading material including books, magazines and newspapers.

There was nothing really else comparable on the market to the original Amazon Kindle, with the exception of the Sony Ebook Reader, which still is light years away from what the Kindle can do. And now it is especially left in the dust with the new improvements to the Kindle 2.

Battery life is always an issue with portable electronics so Amazon gave their new Kindle 25% more battery life. With the wireless turned on, you can read for four days before having to recharge. With wireless turned off, you get up to two weeks of reading time before having to recharge which takes about four hours.

One of the most notable new features on the new Kindle is the "Read-to-Me". **End Summary** Topics: kindle 2 kindle2 amazon kindle 2 new kindle review kindle 2 wireless reading device ebook reader
About the Author:
Please visit our page about the New Amazon Kindle 2 for more information and our site about choosing a Wireless Reading Device .

People who want to learn to play the violin often ask: Is violin hard to learn? How long will take to learn the violin? Am I too old to start learning violin? Like learning anything new, it takes dedication, persistence, enthusiasm and the desire to want to practice as much as one can in order to succeed.

Practicing violin cannot become a chore or something that needs to get done. Just like anything else, some people will have an innate ability or gift to play violin and will learn faster than others. You never want to compare yourself or your progress to others. Judge your progress by how much effort you have put into learning violin.

It helps if you set short term and long term goals for yourself, even mini-goals within a practice session. Perhaps your long term goal is to perform on stage in one year at a school or community event. A shorter term goal would be to learn vibrato in a certain amount of days or weeks. An example of a mini-goal could be to learn how to tune your violin properly at today's practice. **End Summary** Topics: learn to play the violin learning violin play violin violin lessons online violin violin teacher
About the Author:
Taylor has a Learn Violin community blog where he hopes to bring together fellow violinists, especially those who are beginners and want to Learn to Play the Violin .

The Sundance Film Festival - 5 Essential Tips for Tickets and Travel

Every year budding film makers, celebrities and droves of film goes descend upon the quaint little ski town of Park City, Utah for the infamous Sundance Film Festival. It occurs every January, lasting for ten days, with over tens of thousands of visitors attending film premiers, parties and other film related events such as workshops and panel discussions.

The festival has been around since the late 70s when co-founders Sterling Van Wagenen and John Earle along with chairperson Robert Redford started it all. In the early years, attendance was low. That's not a problem today. Long wait-list lines, registering for tickets and ticket packages begin as early as September. And registering doesn't guarantee you tickets. It doesn't even guarantee you a time slot to buy tickets; it's just a chance to get a time slot. Bobby's little festival has sure come a long way.

So here's some tip's to get you ready for the festival:

1) Register for your chance to buy tickets in September. Don't forget! Mark it on your calendar today. Registering early doesn't guarantee but greatly improves your chance for getting the tickets and packages you want. **End Summary** Topics: sundance film festival sundance resort park city utah park city robert redford
About the Author:
Go to our Sundance Film Festival page for more tips and information for this years event as well as skiing and lodging information for the Sundance Resort .

BMX Racing - What's it All About?

The sport of BMX racing is gaining popularity all over the world, especially since it was made an official Olympic sport in the summer of 2008. BMX racing is a sport that is derived from motocross racing, hence the name, bicycle motorcross (BMX). It's been around since the 1960's, however it wasn't until the 1970's when more and more kids started to mimic the Motocross legends that they looked up to, increasing the popularity of the sport.

The BMX race track is a dirt course that is made of a starting block, jumps in various places throughout the course and a finish line. Most races are ran in sprint format allowing only eight riders on the track at a time. Out of the eight riders the fastest will move onto the final race. The motos or the qualifying races give the BMX riders up to three times to get a spot in the final race. Depending on the number of riders there are in the event, there will be many mini races or heats that will filter into the last one that determines the champion.

Protective gear is an important element of BMX racing. **End Summary** Topics: bmx racing bmx racing bikes bmx bikes bmx olympics
About the Author:
Go to BMX Racing Bikes to get your start in the sport and learn more about the different types of BMX Bikes that best suits your style.

Unusual Wedding Cakes - Ideas for Designing Your Own

Unusual wedding cakes are the new usual. They are actually becoming more common than the traditional wedding cake. Do you want something besides the typical white, multi-tiered cake with butter cream icing and traditional bride and groom topper? Aside from your budget, your imagination is your only limitation.

Anything you can dream up is possible for your wedding cake. Sports themes, beach scenes, buildings, animals, movies, whatever you desire. There's a designer out there who can create it and bake it. Even if you are on a limited budget, you don't have to settle for plain and mundane.

The flavors of the cake can be just as exotic as the design itself. You can actually have something besides vanilla or even chocolate. Grand Marnier, pumpkin, cappuccino, chai tea, peanut butter and jelly, cookies and cream, all flavors are legal. If you feel like your tastes may be too unusual for your guests, have a second plain sheet cake as an alternative.

Now that you have a unique cake, design and flavor, don't forget to add a just as unusual wedding cake topper to match your theme. **End Summary** Topics: unusual wedding cakes unique wedding cakes celebrity wedding cakes wedding cake toppers
About the Author:
Please visit So Unusual Wedding Cakes for more unique and unusual wedding cake ideas and pictures, including Celebrity Wedding Cakes .
