My Experience With Bipolar

As a counseling psychologist, I enjoy a variety of clients each day with a variety of needs. I see couples who are on the edge of divorce yet still want to save their marriage and I see young children who are struggling after the loss of a parent or sibling. Some of my most interesting clients are those that deal with bipolar. I was never trained to specifically deal with bipolar, so I had to dive in with my first bipolar client and learn as I went. I'll never forget meeting with my first (of many) client who was struggling with bipolar. I was a little bit afraid because I only had a basic knowledge of the problem and even less understanding of effective treatment plans for the disorder. The first three sessions I had with this bipolar client I simply let her talk. I asked questions as a method of gaining information, but I barely gave any tidbit of counsel or direction. Why? Because I didn't know what to say. I had never experienced someone in my years of preparation and internship for counseling who was so clearly up and down and almost living two different lives.** End Summary**

Experience A Charter Boat

I love going on vacation to Florida. I have been vacationing to Florida at least once each year since I was a little kid. My parents, siblings and I would pile into our family station wagon and make the long drive from Wisconsin to Florida every summer. We would stop at camp grounds along the way to spending at least two weeks as close to the ocean as we could find a place to stay. I remember spending endless hours on the beach shores looking out on all the large boats that passed me by. I wanted to be on one of those charter boats more than anything else. As an adult, I have continued to vacation to Florida with my own family and our friends. We go to a condo every spring for two weeks and we love it. I never tire of Florida vacations because they are absolutely beautiful. I love walking with my daughters along the water and playing football with my sons along the beach. My absolute favorite thing to do each year on vacation, however, is spend a day fishing on a charter boat.** End Summary**

The Leather Jacket I Now Love

Like many people I know, I used to have a semi-serious aversion to leather jackets. I'm not sure why really, I just grew up not liking the look of a leather jacket or the look of almost anyone that wore a leather jacket. All that changed recently, however, when I decided to get a motorcycle. As much as I had always hated the look of a leather jacket, I had still always wanted to get a motorcycle. It seems like a contradiction, and I guess it was. Anyway, the opportunity to buy a used motorcycle recently fell into my lap and I took up the offer. I knew that having a motorcyle would change a lot more than just the way I got to work. It took me only a few days of owning a motorcycle and a few conversations with friends to realize that I really did need a leather jacket for my new ride. I needed a new leather jacket they said, not just because every motorcyclist should have one, but also because a leather jacket is the safest thing to wear in case of an accident.** End Summary**

My Collection Of Sports Cards

I have never been too keen on collecting things. I am sort of a simple guy at heart, so I love having only what I need. I have one running collection, however, that only seems to get bigger as the years go on. Sports cards. I really love gathering, trading and owning sports cards. My love for sports cards began as a young child. My dad would reward me with sports cards when I did well at my chores or when I studied well for school. It was one of the only rewards he offered, and it quickly became the only reward that I was interested in. I remember the joy of buying my first binder to hold my sports cards in. I had saved my allowance for a couple of months and could finally buy the special sports cards holder that I had been looking at in the sports cards store. As I got older, I phased in and out of looking for new sports cards, but I continually cherished my sports cards collections and I spent many hours of free time looking at them and memorizing everything I could about them.** End Summary**

Wake Up With An Alarm

Over the last thirty years of being a professional counselor, I have obviously dealt with a wide range of people and an even wider range of issues. Depression is one of the issues that I have seen in a growing number of clients over the last decade. It sounds bizarre, I know, but I have found over the years that many of my clients dealing with depression all have one symptom in common: they sleep too much and they hate getting up and starting their days. It seems to be a quite obvious result of feeling depressed. I mean really, who can't wait to get up and start a day if they are feeling depressed and hopeless about life. It makes total sense. Don't Build A House Without Bathtubs

As an architect, of course I have strong feelings about elements that should never be left out of any home building project. For example, I believe that no home should be built without bathtubs. When they ask me why I can usually give a pretty strong defense of bathtubs. Bathtubs do something for a bathroom and for a home that ordinary showers without bathtubs cannot do. Bathtubs give the people of a home the ability to have a quiet place of refuge to relax and unwind at the end of a hard day or week. Think about how great it feels to take a hot shower at the end of a long and cold day. Now think about how much nicer it would be to soak in a hot bathtub for thirty minutes instead.
