Arizona Surplus Auction Guide to Getting a Deal

Considering the state of the economy, the number of businesses going belly up, and the need for many corporate entities to turn surplus assets into solid cash to deal with mounting debt, an Arizona surplus auction can be a great resource for deals. It's yet another example of thinking outside of the box. Jobs may be scarce, but there's money to be made in surplus merchandise. I know many second hand store dealers whose business has picked up considerably. They get great deals on quality merchandise at an Arizona surplus auction, add a reasonable mark-up, sell it in a second hand store or on eBay and pocket the difference.

What's Available?
At an Arizona surplus auction, you can pretty much find anything under the sun. You name it, and it is usually available, from cars to real estate to electronics to office furniture. You may be skeptical about the deals, and that's healthy. Deals are real, but they have to be recognized. The competitive nature of the auction process means you've got to use your head. There are usually no minimum bids, so you can walk away with a steal. **End Summary** Topics: Arizona surplus auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company. Considering all the businesses that are being liquidated these days to create quick streams of cash, liquidation auctions can provide incredible deals on a wide amount of merchandise. One way many people manage during this economy is to find great deals at a liquidation auction, and then turn it into a greater profit through second hand stores, E-Bay or other methods.

Yet you've got to be smart at an Arizona liquidation auction, or you can lose a lot of money if you're not careful. Like many things in this hard edged world, you've got to learn to read the fine print. Consider these tips for getting your best buck at your next auction.

Realize You're Only Human
Even if you're a hardened auction professional, the bidding at an Arizona liquidation auction can feel like a surge of adrenaline.
Auction Houses & Live Arizona Auctions

Do you have valuable that you wish to sell at live Arizona auctions? Do you want to want to get the highest dollar as well as the quickest cash settlement for the items you wish to sell? This article will discuss selling items and the benefits for sellers.

Selling
The quickest way to secure capital from unproductive assets is by selling at live Arizona auctions. And the surest way to realize the highest cash return is to call upon the services of an auction house. These firms have produced millions of dollars for sellers in the history of their operation. With statistics such as these, it's no wonder that firms conduct so many auctions a year, selling virtually every type of industrial, commercial and personal asset.

Types
Most auction houses offer a variety of auctions to buyers and sellers. The most common types are live, Simulcast, Internet only and Private. Live Arizona Auctions allow assets to be liquidated on location at your business or home; or the assets can be sold along with the merchandise of other consigners at the warehouse. Simulcast combines the live auction method along with the Internet. **End Summary** Topics: live Arizona auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
Arizona Government Auctions Have Items People Can Use

One of the greatest, little known secrets for buying cheap vehicles and other property is the use of Arizona government auctions. Many have heard of these "mythical" auctions, but very few have actually seen, or been to an auction. However, they do exist and they are the ticket to buying vehicles and other products at prices well under market value.

There are a several types of government agencies that participate in Arizona government auctions throughout the state. Some of these agencies provide seized assets while others simply have surplus. These agencies have seized vehicles, computers, furniture, land and just about anything you can think of. The best part is that by gaining access to the government auctions, you will have the ability to purchase new or near new items for pennies on the dollar.

Government auctions have become very frequent because of the high number of foreclosures and forfeitures. Because of this, bidders are able to purchase many high ticket items for well below market value.

One of the most popular items that can be found at Arizona government auctions are vehicles. Bidders can find cars, trucks, vans, and much more. **End Summary** Topics: Arizona government auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.

Every day the Phoenix Police Department has to seize assets as a result of criminal cases wherein the assets are considered to be proceeds of the crime committed. These assets, if unclaimed, often go to police auctions. At these auctions bidders can find a wide variety of items at prices that are sometimes well below market value.

The number of Phoenix Police auctions has significantly increased due to the constant stream of new items that come in, combined the police department's lack of storage space. Because of this constant turnover bidders are able to purchase many high ticket items for well below their usual retail prices.

An example of some of the items that can be found is jewelry. Bidders can find pieces like rings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, and much more. All the information regarding the jewelry is provided including the type of metal, stones, and sizes. This information, along with high resolution pictures, allows the bidder to know exactly what they are bidding on, both live and online.

Electronics are also popular items people can take advantage of, usually bringing buyers big savings at Phoenix Police auctions. **End Summary** Topics: Phoenix police auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
Buying Tips for a Scottsdale Auction

Are you new to the Scottsdale auction world or are you considering attending your first Scottsdale auction? Auctions can be overwhelming to first-time attendees and if you are unfamiliar with the auction process they can be rather confusing. This article will provide buying tips that will help you avoid common mistakes made by buyers.

Auction Buyer Tip #1: Do not mistake auctions for retail sales. The two have very little in common. Auctions are different from retail because auctions are governed by federal laws, state laws, Uniform Commercial Codes and city ordinances. When you bid at a Scottsdale auction you actually enter a legal contract.

Auction Buyer Tip #2: You must have a bidder's card in order to buy at the Scottsdale auction. To obtain a bidder's card, you must put down a deposit for a bid card. This insures that you will pay for all your purchases that you bid on. Once you pay for your items or decide to leave the auction without purchasing any items, your deposit is immediately returned to you. If you do bid and win, your deposit is applied to the purchases.

Auction Buyer Tip #3: Be careful when you bid on lots. **End Summary** Topics: Scottsdale auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.

Contrary to public opinion, a real property auction in Arizona offers selling conditions that are sometimes better than traditional real estate sales methods. Real estate auctions, in the United States, are on the rise. Banks, lawyers, and property owners are discovering that a real property auction in Arizona is a sound option and an avenue to profitability. This article will discuss real estate auctions and provide information about what property is suited for auction.

Ever wonder how you can tell if a property is well suited to auction? Think of your listing, then take the Two-Thirds Rule test!

Q. What properties are suitable for real property auction in Arizona?
A. Most properties are salable by auction. All types of real estate, including residential property (e.g., town homes, condominiums, cooperative apartments and single-family homes), commercial and industrial property, vacant land and even boat slips are sold at auction. Not all property, however, is suited for auction. If a property will only appeal to a narrow market, auction may not be the most effective marketing method.

Self-Test:
One method to determine if auction is the best marketing strategy is the Two-Thirds Rule. **End Summary** Topics: real property auction in Arizona
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
The History of Auctions

Some scholars argue that the very first auction occurred when Joseph of the Many-Colored Coat was sold into slavery by his brothers, however the first generally accepted auctions occurred in Babylon in about 500 B.C. In those times an auction was held annually, and women were sold on condition that they be married. Beautiful maidens engendered lively bidding, but less comely women had to pay a dowry to be accepted and thus the price could be negative.

Ancient Romans also auctioned goods. Those auctions were held in the "atrium auctionarium", and the trading was carried out by four functionaries: the dominus, on whose behalf the property was sold; the argentarius, who organized, regulated, and possibly financed the sale; the praeco, who advertised and promoted the auction as well as conducted the bidding; and the emptor, the highest bidder (recall caveat emptor, let the buyer beware.). It is not known whether the auctions were ascending or descending, but ascending is presumed since auctus means increase. Bidders normally did not call out openly, but rather winked or waved to indicate a bid. **End Summary** Topics: arizona auctions phoenix auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
Phoenix Auction: The Golden Rule of Consignments

A local auctioneer recently picked up some very nice antiques at a storage auction. He needed to turn the merchandise around quickly due to a cash flow problem. He rushed them into his next Phoenix auction without having time to properly advertise the antiques. The buyers who showed up at the Phoenix auction weren't interested in antiques and the bids were lower than the auctioneer felt was acceptable. So what did he do? He had one of his employees bid on the antiques so that he did not lose any items if the bids were too low. Oddly enough, this very same auctioneer has a reputation for becoming very upset with consignors when they bid on their own merchandise. He discourages in others the very same self-protective behaviors he engages in himself.

Why is this story important? I believe that it nicely illustrates a widespread problem in the Phoenix auction industry. It is the cavalier way many auctioneers treat the property that is consigned to them for sale. Auctioneers treat consignor's merchandise in a manner they would never treat their own property if it was up for auction. **End Summary** Topics: Phoenix auction Phoenix auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
Arizona Auctioneer: Ethics in the Auction Industry

My company recently ran the "Do you hire auctioneers?" ad campaign. We received so many calls from other auctioneers that share concerns and frustrations about the ethics in our auction industry. It is even more apparent that there is a distinctive need for the industry to police itself and that policing begins with each Arizona auctioneer.

Along with auctioneers, we have heard from many clients of auctioneers -- possibly your clients. Most had easy questions to answer about the terminology of "absolute" or "reserve". We explained these terms and sent out a terminology sheet that also reviewed the typical auction process. We heard from other clients that had stories of bad auction experiences and just wanted to vent their frustrations.

The worst story we heard was from an Arizona auctioneer's client less than 200 miles away. Three days prior to his call to my company; his mother's lifetime doll collection had been sold at absolute auction. I was shocked as the client told me that he found original boxes and packaging for the dolls in the trash behind the auction site. **End Summary** Topics: Arizona auctioneers
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
Attracting New Bidders to AZ Auction

Are you on a first name basis with most of your AZ auction buyers? Do you stand around at a preview talking with those long time buyers? Are you surprised when you see new face at one of your auctions? These are all danger signs that you might not be recruiting and retaining enough new buyers to make your auctions maximally profitable for you and the seller.

One of the most basic rules of the AZ auction business is that for an auction to bring a fair market price for its merchandise, there must be at least two eager bidders for each lot. When there is only one bidder for an item or almost as bad, two unenthusiastic bidders - merchandise sells at below market prices.

In a previous article, I mentioned one of the major reasons that sellers hesitate to use auctions to sell their merchandise is the public perception that merchandise sells at an AZ auction at unusually low prices. This perception is aided by the stories of $50 surplus Jeeps and $1,000 Cabin Cruisers. **End Summary** Topics: AZ auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.

This article will provide answers to frequently asked questions regarding paying, picking up and shipping at Phoenix auctions. It will answer questions such as: How much does it cost to participate? How do I know if I won a bid or bids? Do auction houses usually ship my purchases directly to me? What forms of payment are commonly accepted?

Q: How much does it cost to participate in Phoenix auctions? / How much is charged to my credit card when I register as an Internet bidder?
A: At most auction houses only the price of the winning bids you place plus sales tax, if applicable and shipping if you choose not to pick your item up directly. There are no fees charged to bidders who are not winning buyers. Many auction houses do not charge Buyers Premiums fees. However the first time you place a bid in any auction your credit card is commonly authorized for $10. The authorization may appear for one to three days (depending on your banking institution) but is not a charge.

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
A: Most Phoenix auction houses accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover Card. **End Summary** Topics: Phoenix auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
Auctioneer in Arizona: Who's in Charge?

Every auctioneer in Arizona has experienced the auction where no matter what you do - you aren't in charge of the crowd. The crowd is directing you how to sell, when to sell and where the "real" bidder is located. This creates havoc for everyone, especially the auctioneer in Arizona. I have seen it occur at my own auctions and have watched it happen to other unfortunate auctioneers.

I have also seen the auction where the consignor is in control. The family members of an estate are standing around looking distraught to be selling off grandma's possessions. There begins to build a tension in the air when the family members begin explaining to auction attendees the history of each piece that is being sold. Bidders stop bidding, because of a concern that the family will be insulted by their bid. Or even worse the consignors begin to bid and you have to send a staff member over to remind the family that the auctioneer in Arizona is not allowed to take their bid.

The best scenario is when the auctioneer in Arizona is in control. The auction is running smoothly; **End Summary** Topics: auctioneer in Arizona
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
Government Auction: How to Get the Contract

This article will provide information about how to get government auction contracts. The first step is to find out where the government auctions are being conducted; you will need to obtain a list of government agency's procurement offices. Most states have an Office of Cities and Counties that produces a list for $5-$10. Once you have the list you will want to have your company's information placed on a vendor's list for the agency you would like to work with.

There are three ways in which your information can get to these agencies; you can call, write or subscribe to a service that makes your company aware of upcoming bid opportunities; I have done all three and recommend writing. Mail a simple postcard that states, "we request our company's information be placed on the vendor's list for upcoming contracting opportunities in auctioneering or liquidation services." Remember to include your company's name, address and telephone number. If you decide to make telephone calls, be prepared to stay on hold and probably be told your request needs to be in writing. **End Summary** Topics: government auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
An Auctioneer Guide to Auction Purchase Surprises

Items of an auction can be full of surprises and most auction surprises are actually discovered by the auctioneer prior to the sale. In fact, it is their job to prevent surprises because surprises mean that an auctioneer did not bring the maximum amount of money for selling the seller's merchandise. A box of stuff with an undiscovered treasure buried in it does not bring nearly as much money as the box and treasure sold separately.

It is not at all unusual to find valuables hidden amongst the large amounts of household items in estate sales. People will hide valuables amongst clothing in a dresser or will wrap up antiques and place them in boxes of old clothing for safekeeping. To a lesser degree, the same trend in hidden treasures occurs in business liquidations where valuable items get thrown into boxes with lower value items.

The difficulty for an auctioneer is how much effort should be expended to discover these hidden surprises. An auctioneer cannot expend huge amounts of employee time looking through every box. The auctioneer needs to weigh the likelihood of something valuable being present. **End Summary** Topics: Arizona auctioneers
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.

Building a team of professionals to work for an AZ auction firm requires finding people that share a like mind with the auction company's vision. So the auction firm must have a vision. The subject of company goals, mission statements and list of values has been written about ad nauseam in past years. And as someone who has sat down with the purpose of writing a mission statement I will personally attest to the overwhelming challenge to put the goal, purpose and vision for my AZ auction company into one paragraph. However to make the task less daunting ask yourself, "what do we do better than our competition?" The answer to the question will provide the list of your company values. Once in place share this list with your team and make sure all of the team is of a like mind with the statements for success.

Whether you are a one-man show with just a few part-time people assisting on auction day or if you are a large corporation, it is critical that each member of your AZ auction team understands and agrees with the vision set forth for the company. **End Summary** Topics: AZ auction
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.

This article will discuss Arizona auctioneers and how auction regulations affect them. I stood beside a woman wearing shiny black thigh high boots, a hot pink mini skirt and a sparkling silver tube top. Thinking to myself that this would be a great time for Richard Gere to walk in and rescue his "Pretty Girl"; I realize I am standing in the special licensing office of the City of Phoenix. Special licenses regulate topless dancers, adult bookstores, escorts and Arizona auctioneers. It is rather ironic that the auction industry, which has roots that date back to the ancient time of Babylon, is classified right along side the world's oldest profession. It does cause one to wonder how Arizona auctioneers were grouped into this outstanding gathering of "professionals".

Arizona auctioneers and the industry have acquired unfair notoriety. Our state was recently faced with a potential law that would regulate Arizona auctioneers using the same laws that govern pawnshops. Our state association was able to successfully keep this law from passing, but not without a fight. **End Summary** Topics: Arizona auctioneers
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.

As an AZ Auction House CEO my daily planner closes everyday with a question "What have you done to make money today?" The question is somewhat trite and redundant for those of us in business, but I have it in my planner as a reminder to stay focused on business. Many times I answer the question with the number of scheduled auctions on the books. But it is easy to forget that we need buyers for the auction worse than we need sellers.

If you have been in the auction business for any length of time, you're certainly comfortable knowing that if you have AZ auctions your buyers will come. And gratefully this is true. But it is the same group of buyers that always show up for that kind of auction. No one new -- no new blood. The standard group of buyers is comforting to us because they know the auction procedure and auction rules. New attendees just slow the auction down and make the regular crowd angry because the new bidders are bidding "too much".

It has almost become second nature to discourage new bidders at AZ auctions. **End Summary** Topics: AZ auctions
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
A Scottsdale Auction House's research staffers and appraisers accumulate knowledge of value by regularly monitoring their own and other auctions around the country. This article will discuss appraisal services at a Scottsdale Auction House as well as answer frequently asked questions regarding appraisal services.

Q: What is an appraisal?
A: An appraisal is an educated opinion, using sound research and experience for the conclusion of value of property.

Q: Why do I need an appraisal?
A: Courts, insurance companies and banks often require appraisals of property to determine value for legal purposes. For example, if you have a certified appraisal of your personal property and make an insurance claim for loss - the insurance company will be bound to your appraisal value when making a settlement on your property loss. Without an appraisal it is your word against the insurance adjuster's estimate.

Q: Will you testify in court if I need an appraisal defended?
A: Yes, as certified appraisers are often requested by the courts to explain and defend appraisals. They should always have a copy of your appraisal report at their offices and can refer to those documents for a period up to fifteen years. **End Summary** Topics: Scottsdale auction house
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.

The quickest way to secure capital from unproductive assets is by selling at an auction. This article will provide important information regarding selling merchandise at a Phoenix auction house as well as provide some tips to sellers. The surest way to realize the highest cash return is to call upon the services of an auction house.

Live Selling Methodology
A Phoenix auction house's live auctions should allow assets to be liquidated on location at your business or home; or the assets should be sold along with the merchandise of other consigners at their warehouse. Regardless of location, auctions should be thoughtfully set-up to properly display the merchandise for sale. Careful attention should be paid to divide and combine assets in a way that will bring the highest sale dollar possible. An individual advertising campaign should be designed for the selling merchandise and should be targeted towards the buyers that will pay the maximum amount for the assets. The live selling at auction method creates a sense of urgency for the buyer and brings about the quickest cash settlement for our sellers.

Simulcast Selling Methodology
A simulcast auction combines the live auction method along with the Internet. **End Summary** Topics: Phoenix auction house
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
Arizona Auction House: Accepting Auctions

Our Arizona auction house is busy. Everyone is so busy that " busy" is almost a mantra in our Industry. And what are we busy doing? That question can take an hour or two in staff meeting. We know we are supposed to be bringing in as much business as possible to our auctions. But is the business always worth the effort when the yield to the company is minimal.

Recently, a very large auction firm larger referred some business to us. The client who needed an auction didn't have enough revenue for the larger auction firm to pursue. Of course the referral made me question why they thought it would be a large enough account for our Arizona auction house to touch. Perhaps they are a larger firm because they know how to say "no".

Many auctioneers are hesitant to turn any business away because they never know what future business that client might have. And in theory it is easy to understand that concern. However the once in a lifetime client may never produce another auction for the company. What the auction can do is wear down staff and eat at the company's resources. **End Summary** Topics: Arizona auction house
About the Author:
Deb Weidenhamer is CEO of Auction Systems, the Southwest's most active auction and appraisal company.
