The Fees Will Get You

Renting a car can be a tricky venture. There are a number of "fine lines" that you need to read and understand before you drive the rental car off the lot. If you are in a rush, not reading or following these guidelines could end up costing you a pretty penny.

One of the biggest fees that rental companies get is a refueling charge. If you think that gas prices are high when you go to your neighborhood gas station then just turn in your rental car with anything but a full tank and see what it costs you. Many rental companies charge over eight dollars a gallon when they have to do your work for you.

Rental car companies will have to cut back though - at least in the Baltimore/Washington International area. The attorney general's office in Maryland has cracked down on the high fees and rental car companies have agreed to cut back on the charges. It will still cost around 145% more than retail.

It will save you a lot of money when you rent a car if you take the time to fill the tank before turning it in. **End Summary** Topics: rental cars rental car fee lowfares
About the Author:
Harry also writes for LowFares.com.
Airlines Cutting Back on Smaller Markets

Airline companies are doing everything imaginable to try a survive the rising costs of fuels. Many have added additional fees to tickets for everything from extra luggage to choice seats. Some are now announcing a cut back in destinations. The first to go will be the smaller markets.

Smaller regional airports are losing a large number of their flights and services. That means many people will have to drive a little farther to get to an airport that offers the destination they desire. It may also require purchasing a flight TO the airport that does have service to the destination. However you look at this latest development it means more cost to the consumer.

Something had to give. Soaring costs of oil and fuel have pushed many airline companies over the edge already. Those that are left are doing everything they can just to hang on and survive.

The government is one of the reasons many of the airlines got into the smaller markets in the first place. They have been subsidizing the services since the airline industry was first deregulated. Even that subsidy is not enough today. **End Summary** Topics: airlines cut back fuel consumption statistics airline tickets
About the Author:
Click the link to see detailed <a href="http://www.bts.gov/publications/national_transportation_statistics/2004/html/table_04_08.html">air carrier fuel consumption and travel statistics</a> .
