Ten "New Rules" For Successful E-Newsletters

Here are ten "new rules" that are shaping effective ezine content today.

1. Headlines are more crucial than ever. A cleverly crafted headline (or subject line for email) will determine whether or not your email gets opened and read. Headlines that can appeal to a reader's desires on an emotional level will be more effective. "Insider secrets," "5 tips you can apply now to save time/money/energy," and "What they don't want you to know," are examples of titles that work because they are compelling. They offer a promise to solve a problem. They leave the reader with great curiosity. They seduce the reader to open and read the email.

2. Keywords should be placed in the headline. Use them again in the first paragraph, and repeat several times in the body of the content. When somebody sits down and types keywords into a search engine looking for information they need, will your content be found?

3. Content length should be short and to the point. Once you write your message, review it and delete as many words as possible. Ask, "So what?" to each sentence. Keep the focus on your core intention for that email message. **End Summary** Topics: ezine e-newsletter email marketing internet marketing
About the Author:
For more leading edge ezine tips go to www.coachezines.com .
Ezine Mistakes: Avoiding The Delete Key

If you are like me and many other busy professionals, you subscribe to several ezines and newsletters. Then, when you open up your Inbox, you quickly scan the titles and subject lines, and hit the delete key. Very few ezines actually get opened up and read.

Ezine open rates are around 25-40%, and that's for the good ones! Of those opened up, only 11% are actually read thoroughly¦ meaning you have only a few seconds to make a good impression and deliver the promised goods (relevant information)!

What can you do to avoid the delete key? Based on these statistics, you can see the importance of your headline and subtitles. But what about the actual content?

Out of the hundreds of email promotions and newsletters I review each week, here are the six most common errors:

1. The ezine is too personal, informal and friendly, or too formal, too impersonal, and has too much jargon or corporate-speak.

2. There is too much content; the ezine is too long, has too many topics and has multiple "calls to action."

3. The ezine is boring. There is nothing compelling about the content, the subject line or the headline.

4. **End Summary** Topics: ezine e-newsletter email marketing internet marketing
About the Author:
For more leading edge ezine tips go to <a

Email Marketing Is Not Dead: Top 10 Reasons To Publish An Ezine

Email marketing is far from dead, despite the fact it can be a challenge to build an opt-in list of email addresses. Even with the popularity and ease of publishing on blogs, an ezine should be a standard in your online marketing toolbox. Ezines are easy, accessible, inexpensive, instant, and interactive

Here are ten reasons to publish an ezine:

1. Gain name and fame; become widely known as an expert in your field to people you might not ever see or meet. You establish yourself as a thought leader and demonstrate your expertise in a way you could never do on a website or brochure.

2. Cultivate a relationship with your readers; establish trust and credibility. Your ezine is an opportunity to teach, to share interesting information, and to share your philosophy and real life experiences. Readers get to know you. Show them what you know, and also that you care. (There is that old adage that says 'people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care!')

3. Create quality content for your website. **End Summary** Topics: internet marketing business ezine coaching consulting strategies tips blogging weblog
About the Author:
For more leading edge ezine tips go to www.coachezines.com .
Internet Marketing On A Low Budget: An Open Letter

Recently I was contacted by a client who was frustrated that her marketing efforts were not producing results like she expected. In an attempt to address her concerns, I realized how many other professionals are in the same boat. What follows is an open letter to professionals everywhere who are struggling to attract new clients and make money online.

Dear Entrepreneur and Professional:

First, let's address the issue of finances. I understand fully what it is like to invest in your own business, work hard, and see little income. Sometimes it seems as if you work for pleasure, and indeed there is much pleasure involved. It's not unusual for entrepreneurs to be passionate about their business and services and many would do what they love for free.

But it can't work that way, and you must see the money or your business will perish. Finally, after a couple of years of trickle income, we are now seeing results in our own online business, and are making a comfortable living solely from information and services sold on the Internet.

It takes time. And it involves having lots of digital information products people can buy and download instantly. **End Summary** Topics: internet marketing business ezine coaching consulting strategies tips blogging weblog
About the Author:
For more leading edge Internet Marketing tips go to biztipsblog.com .
Searching For Clients? How To Research Using Keywords

In a previous article about how to be found on the Web, I told you about my experience typing in key words I thought potential clients would use when trying to solve a problem for which I had some answers. I wanted to know if they could find me by using the search engines, and I wanted to know who else they were finding as well.

To do this research, I imagined what a potential client would type into a search engine. For my newsletter service business, I guessed that a potential client might type in "ezines" or "how to do an ezine" or "ezine publishing tips." Each time I used a version of these keywords I got different results.

For example on Technorati, a search directory of blogs, "ezine publishing" brought 10,164 results; most of them article directories where there are thousands of articles written on this topic. For "how to publish an ezine," there were 7,631 results. "Newsletters" brought in 250,692 results, and many of them were themselves newsletters rather than articles or resources about newsletters and ezines. **End Summary** Topics: keyword search SEO Google article marketing online marketing Yahoo Patsi Krakoff blogs
About the Author:
For more leading edge ezine tips go to www.coachezines.com .
Searching For Clients? Search Like They Do...

When is the last time you researched your area of expertise on the major search engines like Google or Technorati? This week I did a web search using key words and phrases people use when searching for information about ezine publishing. I was pleased that my blog CoachEzines.com came up first and second for some terms in Technorati, and in the top 10 for some terms in Google.

But I was disappointed that there were hundreds of articles on the topic of ezines in article directories, and only a few were mine. So I learned that I need to submit more articles about ezines to the article directories in order for people to find my business online.

Doing this research is time consuming¦you can't help but get screen sucked for hours. There is a lot of garbage on the Web and a lot of splogs -- spam blogs that exist only for generating ad link revenue.

It makes you wonder how anybody searching on Google or Yahoo ever finds anything useful. If you are a professional and want clients to find your website, you have to know what key words your potential clients are using in their searches. **End Summary** Topics: keyword search SEO Google article marketing online marketing Yahoo Patsi Krakoff blogs
About the Author:
For more leading edge ezine tips go to www.coachezines.com .

1. Be identifiable: Make sure your name badge is easily viewable to others. This may mean attaching it up near your collar or face, so that people don't have to look down your body towards your navel to find it at the end of a lanyard. Make sure it doesn't twist and dangle there back-side out where nobody can read your name.

2. Be identifiable, part 2: Use your own button or name tag in addition to the event name badge. Nothing wrong with overkill here. For this, we use our Blog Squad bright pink buttons, and put them on our shoulders (of both our jackets and shirts in case we take off the jackets), our purses, the conference tote bag. (We haven't yet bought pink laptops and put our decals there, but this might be a good idea in a conference where everybody has a laptop open!)

3. Be identifiable, part 3: Hand out your biz cards to everyone you meet, right away, and ask for theirs. If you wait, there may be a distraction and it doesn't happen. Of course, be sure you have plenty on hand. **End Summary** Topics: networking conferences marketing professional business
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff wrote the ebook "Secrets of Successful Ezines" with partner Denise Wakeman.
Four Agreements With Yourself

In his book "The Four Agreements," Don Miguel Ruiz distills the essence of Toltec wisdom into four principles for living a life of value:

1. Be impeccable with your word.
2. Don't take anything personally.
3. Don't make assumptions.
4. Always do your best.

How elegantly simple! But simple wisdom isn't common practice. While most of us believe we are impeccable with our word, we know others who are not. And most likely, others, from time to time, consider us far less than true with our word.

The Four Agreements are deceptively simple, yet difficult to apply. With practice, they're extremely effective, providing a way to experience inner peace and happiness.

Each agreement is self-directed. It's not about what you can do to change someone's behavior. Rather, these guides teach us how to respond appropriately to others' difficult behaviors and develop smoother relationships.

So, how do you apply these principles at work? Let's examine each one.

1. Be impeccable with your word. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using words to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

2. **End Summary** Topics: The Four Agreements personal developement self help coaching
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy. 2. You format it yourself using your Outlook email program

3. You send your ezine from your email program

4. You get business cards of people you meet at events and add them to your subscriber list

5. You manually add and delete email addresses from your list

6. You manually send subscribers a welcome message, thanking them for signing up for your ezine

7. You miss your monthly or weekly ezine deadline and send it out 'whenever you can'

8. You only send it out whenever you have a new product or service to announce

9. Your ezine consists mainly of sales copy, with a clear call to action: buy your product

Presentation Skills That Persuade And Motivate

Almost everyone feels a bit nervous about delivering a presentation before a group. Some people would rather undergo a root canal than experience the anxiety of giving a speech.

Follow some basic guidelines for preparation and delivery, and you can transform your nervousness into positive energy that achieves the results you desire.

The secrets to successful presentations are simple, based on common sense. Many people, however, fail to employ them.

Step One: Purpose

What’s the purpose of your presentation? There are many reasons to make a speech or announcement, and you need to clearly define your goal. Do you have to deliver bad news to your department? Do you require a decision from your superiors on a problematic business situation? Do you have a solution and want to convince people? Are you trying to sell a solution or product?

Most presenters try to persuade their audience to buy into specific ideas. They must sufficiently inspire and motivate listeners to take action or give the green light to act on suggested solutions.

You need to lead your audience through the decision-making process so members can go through it with you. **End Summary** Topics: presentations presentation skills leadership management persuasion
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
Keeping Your Brain Healthy And Smart: Keep Active And Learn New Things

For years fitness enthusiasts have suspected that exercise positively affects the brain as well as the body. But while it seemed logical that an active lifestyle would help the brain, the scientific evidence was lacking.

Now several biological studies indicate that working out does benefit the brain.

The reasons to get moving are greater than you think. Now researchers are finding biological evidence that exercise benefits specific brain mechanisms. And, it even contributes to growing new neurons! While we used to think that the brain loses cells as we age, we now know it is not true for those people who keep active and learn new things.

Much of the new research suggests that exercise positively affects the hippocampus, a sea-horse shaped brain structure that is vital for memory and learning.

In one recent study, researchers found that adult mice doubled their number of new brain cells in the hippocampus when they had access to running wheels. The fact that the mammalian adult brain can increase its number of brain cells is surprising in itself. This is good news for aging adults.
It was once thought that the brain stopped producing new brain cells early in its development. **End Summary** Topics: brain fitness health well-being seniors
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
Tune Into What Customers Really Want

Customer relationship marketing is powerful in theory, but troubled in practice. We need to take time to figure out how and why we are undermining our own best efforts.

Perhaps we're overlooking the fundamental elements of a good customer relationship program. With the means to connect with customers easily, maybe we're rushing to cash in on the potential rewards, while forgetting the essentials of all relationships: intimacy and trust.

Close examination reveals that relationships between companies and consumers are suffering. U.S. satisfaction rates are at an all-time low. Complaints, boycotts and growing unhappiness with big corporations are strong indicators that most CRM isn't working.

Ironically, the very steps marketers are taking to build relationships with customers are often responsible for destroying these connections. Companies may delight in learning more about their customers and providing services to please them, but customers are fed up. They're tired of irrelevant survey questions, overwhelming product choices, features they'll never use in phone plans and cars, and rebate-driven buyer reward programs.

The New Frontier: Mining the Internet

With the proliferation of online stores that complement traditional outlets, companies now have a tremendous source of information about consumers' preferences. **End Summary** Topics: marketing communication business blogs buzz word of mouth
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
Ready To Snap: Crazy, Busy And The Lure Of Modern Life

Are you too busy? Are you always in a hurry, juggling work and family tasks like balls in the air? Are you ready to snap?

You're not alone. Millions of successful adults are being swept up by today's frenetic, globalized, technology-driven lifestyle. We have plunged into a mad rush of activity, aided by high-speed Internet, cell phones, instant messaging, BlackBerries and email 24/7. We work longer hours, with escalating demands at work and home.

We expect our brains to keep track of more than they can handle and then find ourselves losing and forgetting things-impatient, anxious, worried and plagued by short attention spans. Modern life, for all of its timesaving conveniences, is sapping our creativity, humanity, joy and, occasionally, our sense of humor.

The speed of our lives threatens to destroy our most important connections. Unless you deliberately set aside time for what matters most to you, your connection to it will erode. When it does, you'll find yourself less energetic, less optimistic, less hopeful, less confident and less enthusiastic than before-and you won't even know why.

ADD Nation?

Since the mid-1990s, people have increasingly complained of being chronically inattentive, disorganized and overbooked. **End Summary** Topics: time management productivity business ADD techology lifestyle
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
How To Write Articles Quickly

Yuck, it's that time again, newsletter time. Are you stuck in front of a blank page or computer screen? Do you struggle each time you have to write? People seem to find all other tasks preferable to writing an article. We have a friend who finds himself washing out socks instead of writing. There's a term for it: "shaving the yak."

Originally coined by Seth Godin, marketer and author extraordinaire, "shaving the yak" means that when faced with writing, some people find themselves doing any other chore they can think of, eventually finding themselves down at the zoo, shaving yaks.

Writing can be painful to many people. It doesn't have to be. Here's a basic outline of how to write an article quickly and without the painful struggle.

1. Pick a topic that appeals to your readers. This may not be what you think they want, so you need a way to ask, or find out what they want to know. Either ask them directly, or use keyword search tools to find out the most popular requests on the web in your field.

2. Write to appeal to basic human emotions. **End Summary** Topics: article marketing articles marketing ezine newsletter Internet writing
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
5 Ways To Make Money With One Article

Would you like to know a winning formula on how to make money on the Web from writing articles? Here's how I do it: I write an article, create 4-5 versions of it, and sell it for use by others in my same profession. In fact, just that one part of my business generates enough income to fully support myself comfortably. Just about anyone in any profession or business can copy this formula.

I write articles for executive coaches and business consultants. They use different versions of my articles in their own newsletters, with their own names in the byline. When they purchase an article, they get reprint rights, but not exclusivity. But since they are in all parts of the country, and the world, they don't bump into others using the same article. They are also free to change the article.

This formula can be used in any industry. Let's say you are a veterinarian. You know a lot about pets, and about your vet clinic clients. You can easily write articles that appeal to your customers who are pet owners. **End Summary** Topics:
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
Good Self, Bad Self

Do you walk your talk? Most of us like to think that we mean what we say and say what we mean.

Then why do we keep saying we will quit doing this, or start doing that, and we find we keep on doing the same old things? Most New Year's resolutions end up abandoned shortly after they were made.

We are not liars. We are sincere at the time. But soon or later, we find ourselves faced with conflicting emotions, convictions and our real actions.

Most of the time we kid ourselves with a system of delusions and denial. We say we are one kind of person, while doing things that are contrary to our desired image.

Psychologists call it "cognitive dissonance," a state of discomfort when we say one thing but do another. We will go to any lengths to avoid that feeling, hence we construct an elaborate system of delusions, denial, and some behaviors we don't even notice.

To face the fact that we aren't acting like the person we believe we should be is painful and unpleasant. We don't have time for that. **End Summary** Topics: ezine leadership management executive coaching performance manager productivity
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
Beware The Busy Manager

Only about 10 percent of managers work purposefully to complete important tasks, according to a 10-year study of managerial behavior across a variety of industries. The other 90 percent self-sabotage by busily engaging in non-purposeful activities, procrastinating, detaching from their work and needlessly spinning their wheels.

In a revealing study over a 10-year period, 1993-2003, authors Heike Bruch and Sumantra Ghoshal tracked behaviors of managers in a wide variety of industries (A Bias for Action: How Effective Managers Harness Their Willpower, Achieve Results, and Stop Wasting Time, Harvard Business School Press, 2004).

They found that over 90 percent of managers fail to act purposefully in their everyday work. Bruch's and Ghoshal's study identifies four profiles of managerial behavior, as charted in a grid measuring focus and energy. Managers were charted as being high or low in focus, and they were charted as being high or low in energy.

High focus, high energy managers were described as Purposeful.
High focus, low energy managers were seen as Detached.
Low focus, high energy managers were described as Frenzied.
Low focus, low energy managers were seen as Procrastinators. **End Summary** Topics: ezine leadership management executive coaching performance manager productivity
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
The Meaning Of Life - In 25 Words Or Less

What is the meaning of life - and could you sum it up in 25 words? What if someone offered you $10,000 for your best description?

The website www.themeaningoflife.com is running such a contest, and while it may be a marketing ploy, it's an astute one. Who isn't intrigued by this question? Who hasn't struggled to figure out his or her true purpose?

Like Arthur Dent in A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, we wish the meaning of life could be reduced to one simple solution: in his case, "42."

What if there are no meanings to life, except those we choose? As new-age gurus assert, "It's all made up, anyway!" Or, as religious doctrines proclaim, "Follow God's will for you. This is the true meaning of life."

Between "any which way you want" and "His way or the highway (to hell)," many decisions must be made along the way.

Even if we turn over some parts of our lives to leaders, religious or otherwise, other parts and decisions remain. What do you eat? What kind of work do you do? What about play and having fun? Marriage and relationships? **End Summary** Topics: life purpse coaching self help self improvement
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
Confessions Of A Reluctant Online Business Woman: How I Hired (And Fired!) A Spa*mer !

If you want a six-figure income sitting at your computer, working the hours you choose, doing what you love, then learn to market online the smart way.

You may be like me. You've got a great service business - or a small business - and you decide you want to have "an online presence." You start with a website. Then you realize nobody is going to find you unless you do something to drive traffic.

You used to drive "in" traffic to a job, now you're "driving traffic to" your website. You are herding "unique visitors" to web pages, hoping they'll stay long enough to read what you have to say and become interested in your services.

Just about anybody who has put up a website has realized it is not enough to "build it and they will come." Many people realize this after spending big bucks on website design. One woman spent $50,000 to put up an elaborate website; it looked gorgeous, only it didn't sell anything. It didn't even capture email addresses from visitors to follow up with them.

Most independent professionals don't have a big budget to hire someone for marketing their business online. **End Summary** Topics: internet marketing blogs ezines newsletters shopping cart website
About the Author:
Patsi Krakoff, Psy.
