Victoria

Located on the southern edge of Vancouver Island is the city of Victoria. It has a population of around 390,000 and is steadily growing due to its mild climate compared to other parts of Canada - pleasing those of retirement age and attracting mass tourism to the city and surrounding areas in the summer months. The history of Victoria dates back to the early 1700’s when its first occupants were the Salish people. It then later became a city in 1862 due to the fact that Victoria was the main port for the British Columbia gold industry and today it serves as its Capital City.

Victoria’s economy relies heavily on the tourism industry with it hosting many annual festivals including the Tall Ship Race and Swift Sure International Yacht Race that attracts sailing professionals from around the globe. It has also hosted many sports events such as the Grand Prix, Ice-skating Championships and even the 2007 Commonwealth games were hosted here. Aside from tourism and sporting events Victoria’s other contributions to the economy include telecommunications and pharmaceutical manufacturing as well as Federal Government administration and finance. **End Summary** Topics: Vancouver Holidays Holidays in Vancouver Flights Vancouver
About the Author:
<a href=http://www.flyglobespan.com/canada/" Travel to Canada/a and visit the marvelous city of Victoria on the edge of a href=http://www.flyglobespan.com/to/vancouver/">Vancouver</a> for a breathtaking experience

Negative Impact of Physical Abuse in Children

Childhood physical abuse involves the physical injury or maltreatment of a child or adolescent under the age of eighteen. Physical abuse includes hitting, punching, slapping, kicking, shaking, burning and other ways of inflicting pain. Other forms of physical abuse include not giving a child food to eat, denying a child medical attention, and giving a child drugs and alcohol.

Physical abuse can have short and long term psychological, emotional and physical effects. Short term effects include physical injury and brain damage. Children may become withdrawn, sad, experience difficulties sleeping and eating, become irritable and aggressive towards their peers or younger siblings, have lack of confidence and self-esteem and start using alcohol and/or illicit substances. The long terms effects include difficulties forming and maintaining healthy relationships and a propensity to be victimised or abused in future relationships.

It is often difficult to tell if a child is being physically abused, as injuries may be inflicted in areas that are hidden from view. Signs of physical abuse include bruises, broken bones, bites, burns and unexplained or untreated injuries.

There is no direct cause or reason attributed to the physical abuse of a child. **End Summary** Topics: physical abuse physically abused abuse physically
About the Author:
<a href="http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/AbuseSafety/Pages/Physical.aspx">Physical Abuse</a> is if someone is hurting or hitting you to cause bodily harm.
Lack of care and attention lead to Neglect

Neglect is the lack of care or failure to provide adequate nourishment, stimulation, safety, education and love to a child or children. Neglect can have serious consequences on a childâ€'s psychological, physical and emotional development.

It is often difficult to identify signs of neglect as it can take many forms. Signs of possible neglect include a child frequently missing school for no apparent reason and children regularly been left alone or unsupervised. Also, when demands placed upon them are high, such as looking after younger siblings. Neglect can be life threatening for babies and young children. For instance, if children are not provided with a healthy balanced diet, adequate amount of physical activity and adequate clothing, especially in cold weather or lack medical attention when necessary.

Severe failure to meet a childâ€'s needs can result in slow learning, in particular walking and talking; feeding problems and slow growth, a child being easily distracted, and doing badly at school. Other possible effects are children been unable to form close relationships with peers, low self-esteem and self worth, loss of interest in activities, depression and withdrawal, and an inability of being spontaneous and making decisions. **End Summary** Topics: neglect neglected being neglected lack of care
About the Author:
Inadequate care and attention can sometimes lead to a feeling of <a href="http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/AbuseSafety/Pages/Neglect.aspx">Neglect</a> in Children.
Affects of Emotional Abuse in childhood

Emotional abuse is the wilful or reckless infliction of emotional anguish which significantly harms a childâ€'s emotional development. It most often occurs at home, when a parent, carer, sibling, relative or baby sitter behaves in a threatening, humiliating and aggressive way. This can range from neglect, rejection, continuous criticism and lack of affection.

Identifying when a child is being emotionally abused can be very difficult. The effects can be damaging affecting the child developing into a healthy and well-adjusted adult. A child who is being emotionally abused or neglected may be slow to learn to walk and talk, be passive and unable to be spontaneous, find it hard to develop close relationships, be easily distracted and struggle or perform badly in school.

Children need to be loved, shown affection, disciplined, encouraged and protected by those close to them. An important part of normal child development is the growth of moral awareness, acquiring a sense of what is right and wrong and the ability to abide by rules or norms. Children growing in an environment which lacks affection and is continuously threatening often lack self esteem, moral awareness and remorse. **End Summary** Topics: Emotional abuse emotionally abused abuse emotionally
About the Author:
Inadequate care and attention can sometimes lead to a feeling of <a href="http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/AbuseSafety/Pages/Neglect.aspx">Neglect</a> in Children.
Increasing Incidences of Racist Bullying

Racism is children is another form of bullying known as racist bullying. This is very common and occurs when someone is treated unfairly, picked on and harassed by other children because of their race, colour, traditions or beliefs. Bullying of this kind may take different forms such as making racist remarks, threats, not letting the victim join in play or games, hitting, punching and kicking and taking or damaging personal property.

There are many reasons why children become bullies. Children who grow up within racist families often adopt these attitudes and behaviours because they have seen it done to others and may think that this is acceptable. It is also possible that they themselves have been victims of violence at home and therefore pick on children who appear different to them. Racism is also a sign of people feeling threatened by another person who looks different or is from a different culture.

Being the victim of racist bullying is very distressing and can make you feel sad and isolated. **End Summary** Topics: racism racist race racist bullying racial abuse racial bullying racial attack
About the Author:
If you are affected by <a href="http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/Pages/Racism.aspx">Racism</a> or are <a href="http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/Pages/Bullying.aspx">being bullied</a> because of it then you should take immediate measures by talking about it and getting support.

Issues and Problems of being in School

School life can be fun and exiting. Schools encourage children and young people to learn and develop skills whether social, academic or work related. However, it can also be a stressful and upsetting process for some, due to bullying, difficulties with home work and exams. Experiencing difficulties such as these can often leave children feeling sad, anxious and angry. You may feel that you do not want to go back to school but remember that you are not alone and that there are ways in which these problems can be solved.

There are many ways to help you cope with the stress that school life may create. For example, if you are having difficulties understanding a subject or what it is that you are supposed to do for homework, always ask your teacher to go through instructions a second time. It may be embarrassing to ask a teacher a second time in front of your peers, so speak to them in private and explain what it is that you are having difficulty with. If you feel anxious about exams, don’t leave it to the last minute. **End Summary** Topics: School bullied in school bullying in school being bullied in school education educated going to school
About the Author:
Being in <a href="http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/Life/Pages/School.aspx">School</a> can have its own issues.
Affects of Family Relationships on Children

Family relationships are important and children should grow up in a loving and supportive family unit. However, difficulties in relationships are often common, such as constant arguing, and physical abuse which can result in parents finding it difficult to live together so they eventually separate or divorce.

Children are seriously affected by this experience. They often feel upset, worried and sad. The way in which the child copes with this situation varies depending on how the parents separate, the age of the child and how much support they get from their parents, family and friends.

Children often feel angry at one or both parents or guilty as they may think that they are responsible for the separation. They may worry about the future, often feeling unfamiliar and unsafe, especially if they have to move homes or move in with a new family. These often lead to children feeling a sense of loss and rejection.

It is important to open all lines of communication so that children can talk about what is happening with their parents and are able to ask questions about it. Parents often feel that children are too young to understand what is going on. **End Summary** Topics: family families relationship relationships support help argue parents
About the Author:
<a href = "http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/HomeFamilies/Pages/FamilyRelationships.aspx">Family Relationships</a> can affect anyone which are mainly caused by problems such as abuse, neglect and arguments with parents.
Facts about Suicide and Self Harm

People of all ages and from all walks of life die by suicide each year. Suicide in children and young people is increasing. Children can feel overwhelmed and helpless when under stress. They may have encountered difficulties at home or school and may think that suicide is the only solution. Depression is a major risk factor for suicide, although not everyone who attempts suicide is depressed.

An increasing number of children are also engaging in self-harming behaviour. Self harming occurs when someone deliberately hurts or injures themselves by cutting, hitting or burning oneself, overdosing and self-poisoning, taking illegal drugs and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. Self-harm is often a way of dealing with difficult feelings about a problem or situation. Children who self-harm may feel more in control and relieved from the tension they feel. Self-harm may also be a way of punishing oneself for something that is shameful and to cope with feelings of guilt.

Suicide and self-harm are often the result of an argument with a parent or a close friend. It is also the result of abuse, neglect and rejection. Anyone struggling to cope with these difficulties is in need of support. **End Summary** Topics: suicide suicidal commit suicide self harm damage yourself damaging yourself take your own life kill yourself kill myself
About the Author:
Feelings of despair and isolation can sometimes lead to people thinking of commiting <a href="http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/DamagingYourself/Pages/Suicide.aspx">Suicide</a> .

The death of a family member or close friend is an overwhelming experience that affects everyone. Children are particularly vulnerable during this difficult time as they may not understand fully what has happened or the events that led to their loss. Children’s reaction to death and how well they cope depends on a number of factors, such as whether the person who died was close to them and was involved in their life; also on the child’s age and level of understanding.

Death can seriously affect children’s lives, especially if the loss affects their daily routine and the way in which they are looked after. Children often feel anxious about the future, worried and sad. They might blame themselves or worry that they caused the death by something that they did. They may also experience sleep disturbance such as nightmares and become withdrawn or aggressive towards others.

Children are in need of attention during this difficult time. Coping may also depend on the way family and friends respond to the loss and whether or not they provide the child with support. **End Summary** Topics: when someone dies bereavement death died what to do when someone dies what happens when someone dies
About the Author:
It can be a difficult to deal with the grief that one goes through <a href ="http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/Life/Pages/WhenSomeoneDies.aspx">When Somone Dies</a> who were closest to you.

Cyberbullying occurs when someone is threatened, harassed or teased via e-mail, chat rooms, mobile phone and other form of technology. This is a form of bullying which is becoming ever so popular given how easy it is to remain anonymous, therefore reducing the chances of getting caught.

When using the internet it is important to stay safe, as there are many ways in which people can get hold of your personal details such as e-mail address and phone number for the purposes of bullying. For example, chat rooms are a great way of having instant conversations with other people, however, it is easy for people to pretend that they are someone else and trick you into disclosing your personal details.

The effects of cyber bullying vary from person to person. It can leave children feeling very upset, fearful, isolated and distressed. Some may also feel embarrassed or become aggressive by responding to messages in an abusive manner also with the hope that the abuse will stop. However, this problem might escalate and will leave the victim feeling worse. **End Summary** Topics: cyberbullying cyber bullying safe surfing. being safe online online safety internet safety safe internet
About the Author:
If you are being threatened by someone over the phone or internet and need help about <a href =

Running Away from Home can be Damaging

Children who run away from home face great difficulties and dangers. Most run away due to problems with their parents and/or families. For example, violence in the family, arguing, separation or divorce. It is usually the hurt and anger resulting from experiencing these difficulties what pushes children to run away from home.

There are many other reasons for children to run away. Some of these include, being bullied at school, being ashamed of something that they have done and afraid of their parents’ reaction, peer pressure or simply due to not wanting to follow rules or being disciplined.

Many children face difficulties at home and school and may think that the easiest way to deal with them is by running away in the hope that their problems will just go away, however, children are often faced with other problems such as not having money or a safe place to sleep. Children may turn to crime in order to meet their basic needs, and end up in risky situations which lead to taking drugs or alcohol or doing things against their will. These will make them feel even more isolated and depressed. **End Summary** Topics: running away run away homeless homelessness childline child line life issues
About the Author:
Children can think of <a href = "http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/HomeFamilies/Pages/HomelessnessRunaway.aspx">Running Away</a> from home for various reasons related to family, abuse, stress or pregnancy.
Worried about How You Look or your Body Image?

Lots of people worry about what they look like and what other people think of them. Often, children and young people think that they look too fat, too thin, too short or too tall and would rather look like someone else, such as actors on TV or the movies, models, sports people or someone they know. Children as young as 7 believe that they are fat and are unhappy with the shape of their bodies.

Body image is how you perceive, think and feel about your body. This may have nothing to do with the way you actually look. Many factors contribute to forming your body image such as television programmes, magazines, relatives, friends and peers. Being teased about your physical appearance also has a strong impact on the way in which you perceive your body. Many are teased because they are overweight or underweight, are too dark or too pale etc. This experience often has a negative effect on self-esteem and behaviour. Resulting in drastically changing how you dress, what and how much you eat. For example, many children may start avoiding food or over eating. This will have negative health implications in the long term. **End Summary** Topics: How you look your looks body image life issues childline
About the Author:
If something is making your worried about <a href = "http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/Life/Pages/HowYouLook.aspx"> How You Look</a> and your Body Image then you can get help on these <a href = "http://www.childline.org.uk/Info/Pages/Life.aspx">Life Issues</a> now.

Mother's Day

Mother's Day is the special day for special woman, in order to make her feel the most important and respected. Children should consider it essential to acknowledge their mother with some special arrangements, for being fortunate to be blessed with such great figure. The day is glorified by giving gifts like chocolates, cards, and jewelry to mothers on this day. This day is dedicated to thank all mothers for their responsibilities and hardships they undertake in a child’s upbringing.

This festival is celebrated across 48 countries on various days. Though the days of celebration are different but the feeling and essence remains the same all over; to show gratitude for their efforts. Mothers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in most of the countries including US, Australia, Canada and India when children shower their mothers with cards, chocolates, and flowers.

Evolution of mother’s day

The origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Romans and Greeks. But the roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated; **End Summary** Topics: Mothers Day Mothering Sunday gift Mothers Day Gifts Chocolate Gifts mothers day chocolates gourmet chocolate premium chocolate
About the Author:
Hotel Chocolat is a premium chocolateir specialising in Gourmet and Gift Chocolates. http://www.hotelchocolat.co.uk has a selection of <a href="http://www.hotelchocolat.co.uk/Mothers-Day-Gifts-CHCOMOTHER/">Mothers Day Gifts</a> and chocolates which are just perfect to express the love for your mum.

Chocolate Eggs and Bunnies make Easter Special

Easter is one of the most fondly celebrated holy festivals of Christians. It is the sacred celebration for Christâ€'s rebirth. Churches all over are decorated with flowers and filled with worshippers.

Earlier Easter was celebrated on separate days of the week. Then later on a rule was issued, which stated that Easter shall be celebrated on a Sunday, between March 22 and April 25. So, the first Sunday which comes after the first full moon following March 21 is celebrated as ‘Easterâ€'. That Easter Sunday marks the end of lent, a 40 day period of fasting and prayers.

Symbols of Easter

There are many symbols associated with Easter- such as eggs, rabbits, chicks, and lilies.

The Easter Bunny or the Easter Rabbit is a popular image of the holiday. Rabbits are known as the most fertile, as of which they are marked as important symbol of the festival. The first kind of Easter bunnies were made of pastry and sugar. However today, the Bunny is often made from chocolate and given to children in celebration of the Easter Bunny.

Another popular symbol of the festival is Easter egg. Egg is considered as a symbol for new life. **End Summary** Topics: Chocolate Easter Egg Easter Bunnies Easter Chocolate Easter Gifts Easter Sunday Chocolates
About the Author:
Hotel Chocolat is a premium chocolateir specialising in Gourmet and Gift Chocolates. http://www.hotelchocolat.co.uk has a selection of <a href="http://www.hotelchocolat.co.uk/chocolate-easter-eggs-gifts-CHCeaster/">Easter Gifts</a> and chocolates which are perfect for a classic Easter Day celebration.
