Magical Benefits Of Meditation For People With Eating Disorders

Many researches have proven now that people with eating disorders derive a lot of benefits from doing meditation. Eating disorder sufferers have disturbances in autonomic nervous system, problems with impulse control and many emotional problems. All these can be improved with regular meditation.

You see, human beings are made up of three components: physical, mental and emotional. You can think of it as like a triangle with the same length sides. To correct eating disorders all the sides of triangle have to be balanced.

The Mental side represents the knowledge people learn about their condition and how to cope with it. The physical side represents the natural strength of a person's body which we inherit from parents. The Emotional side of the triangle is the one which always becomes unstable in people with eating disorders.

That's why eating disorders sufferers have very bad mood swings, uncontrollable negative thoughts, long-standing bad feelings and painful sensations in different parts of the body that they try to moderate with food (obsessive eating or abstaining from food).
Emotional strengthening is the key to curing many eating disorder problems. **End Summary** Topics: eating disorder and meditation eating disorder eating disorder sufferers
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
Adult Eating Disorders: How To Deal If The Person Doesn't Admit Having One

If you are dealing with an adult who suffers from an eating disorder, then you should adjust your talk to a relevant format.

Remember, an adult may use stronger language than a child would use. Do not get angry. It will not do any good, and will probably make things worse. Plus, the sufferer will not want to confide in you.

Remember that your appearance and tone of your voice should make her/him feel that you are coming with an open heart, and you do it only because you love her/him and care very much about the person: that you don't have any intention of putting them down or embarrassing them in any way.

Be sensitive, diplomatic and intuitive. Regardless of what happens during the conversation, you should finish the exchange letting the person know that you are willing to listen to them anytime they feel more comfortable about talking.

If the person you want to help doesn't admit they have a problem, then:

1. Understand that you (and the person close to you) are not responsible for their illness BUT you should take responsibility to do what you can to help them to improve and recover. **End Summary** Topics: Adult Eating Disorders Eating Disorders in adults
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
Male Eating Disorders: 10 Things You Can Do To Help

According to general statistic one out of ten patients with eating disorders is a man. That means that men are 10% of all eating disorders suffers, but according to the opinions of many experts the number could even be higher.

The problem with men is that they are reluctant to come and complain about their problems and hide their problems longer than women do. All these make it hard to show an accurate statistic for male-sufferers.
Clinicians agree that diagnosing anorexia and bulimia in men is more difficult than it is in women despite identical behaviours.

Men are also much more likely to be diagnosed with depression associated with appetite disturbances.
A large proportion of men suffering from eating disorders are athletes. There is a tendency among male-athletes to diet or avoid certain foods in order to achieve a target weight or body image.

Other occupations which are prone to developing eating disorders are horse racing, modelling, dancing, distance running and driving.

The lack of visibility of eating disorders in men means a number of things.

First, men don't discuss anorexia-bulimia problems and they don't share their information with other men. **End Summary** Topics: Male Eating Disorders Males Eating Disorders men Eating Disorders Eating Disorders in men
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
Cure Your Eating Disorder With The Power Of Neuroplasticity: 5 Crucial Steps

Neuroplasticity is the ability of the human brain to change itself based on how we live our lives. Our brain consists of cells or neurons that are interconnected.

It means that different life experiences and different behaviours are constantly changing the strength of these connections, by adding or removing connections, and by adding new cells.

"Plasticity" relates to learning by adding or removing connections, or adding cells. According to the theory of neuroplasticity, thinking, learning, and acting actually change the brain's physical structure or anatomy as well as functional organization, known as physiology, from top to bottom.

The brain's plasticity exists from "cradle to grave" and the adult brain is not "hard-wired" with fixed and immutable neuronal circuits as was previously thought.

So, neuroplasticity is the power to produce a more flexible and beneficial behaviour for the treatment of eating disorders. However, these positive changes will only happen if you target the eating disorder in a certain way. These can be subdivided into 5 steps of actions that you should undertake to stop your eating disorder.

The 1st step: Believe that you can stop your eating disorder. Do exercises to begin changing the way your mind works. **End Summary** Topics: eating disorder cure. eating disorders cure eating disorder eating disorder sufferers
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
Do Parents Cause Eating Disorders in Their Children

There has been a lot of discussion lately on the roll of parents causing eating disorders in their children, is this the case or not?

It is very sensitive topic because it is painful for families to even think that they are a possible cause of their daughter/ son bulimia and/or anorexia.

I am a medical doctor and suffered anorexia and bulimia for over 15 years. Also I have been involved in the treatment of hundreds of eating disorder sufferers. Personally, I don't know a family who wishes to foster eating disorders in their children. I would say that parents and the family do not cause eating disorders directly.

However, I know first hand that the family atmosphere, parenting style and undiagnosed mental and emotional problems in parents contribute a lot to the development of eating disorders in their children.

There is a lot of research around about the roll of genetic predisposition in eating disorders. Yes, eating disorders do have a genetic component as well, but it is only the vulnerability to develop an eating disorder not the disease itself that people can inherit. **End Summary** Topics: Cause of Eating Disorders eating disorders in children eating disorders
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
How Anorexia Could Have Contributed To Michael Jackson's Death

Autopsy report revealed that at the time of death Michael Jackson weighted just 50 kilograms which is very low for a man his height and age.

Also it was said that his body was covered with marks from injections of pain killers. He had no hair and wore a wig before his death. His stomach was absolutely empty except of partially dissolved drugs which he took a few hours before his final moment.

According to medical professionals Michael survived on one small meal a day and a regime of painkiller's injections and other drugs. The injected painkiller is believed to be pethidine, which were administered three times a day. Michael also was taking a cocktail of different drugs daily.

Jackson's use of painkillers has been linked to a burning accident on set while filming a 1984 Pepsi commercial. He was treated for painkiller addiction at a clinic in 1993.

How Anorexia Could Have Contributed to the death of Michael Jackson?

1.It is most likely that Michael died from the cardiac arrest which was caused by high dose of prescription drugs. **End Summary** Topics: Michael Jackson Michael Jackson and anorexia
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
7 Signs That Michael Jackson Had an Eating Disorder

Michael Jackson has died and there are speculations about the cause of his death. Stress, drug problems, weak lungs and heart and extremely low body weight are all implicated.

Numerous rumours suggest that at the time of his death Michael weighted slightly over 100 pounds. Taking into consideration his height 5'.10" his BMI at the time of his death was 14.3 (compare to a healthy range BMI between 18.5 and 25.) This is about 29 pounds lower than would be considered a healthy level.

Low body weight can be a symptom of many diseases but in Michael's case, reports saying that he suffered from an eating disorder.

Eating disorders often have their own causes and certain personality traits make different people more prone to developing them. Apparently, Michael Jackson had many personality traits that would make him susceptible to developing an eating disorder. His stressful life and deprived childhood could be causes for his mental problems.

According to many sources Michael Jackson suffered from Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.

What are the facts that could point to Michael Jackson having an eating disorder?

Building Self Esteem in an Eating Disorder Sufferer Might Help Them Recover

Very often people wonder how they can help an eating disorder person to get better. What they can do at home that can be useful for the sufferer's recovery?

My answer always is "First of all, help them to built their self-esteem up and trust in others. Trust will make them love themselves and respect others."

Also, family members often want to know if there was anything they have done in the past that could contribute to the development of an eating disorder in their loved one. They often say that they have never abused the sufferer not physically nor emotionally and they can't understand why their loved one has an eating disorder.

But the child emotional trauma is not always obvious to adults. The child emotional problems in the family could be due to:

- Poor communication between parents and a child: this is one of the primary problems from which many other issues come also. Poor communication with a child can manifest itself in several damaging ways.

When a child has issues with something that the parents do or say, that child may seek refuge inside themselves rather than talking to the parents. **End Summary** Topics: eating disorder eating disorders eating disorders and self-esteem
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
Orthorexia is a Dangerous Obsession With "Healthy" Eating

It is great to eat healthy and most of people will benefit greatly by paying more attention to what they eat.

However, some people get so involved with focusing on their food that it becomes an obsession. This obsession with "healthy" eating can override people's other interests in life, impair their relationships, replace their love and joy in life and cause other mental and physical problems.

Too much of "healthy" eating can easily turn into an eating disorder that is called orthorexia. Health food junkies are more at risk of developing orthorexia than balanced eaters. The sufferers avoid certain foods such as things with preservatives, fatty foods, animal products, sugar and others.

Many of them get obsessed with raw foods. Sometimes this obsession goes so far that the person lives just on raw green leafs for weeks or months. This results in malnutrition, starvation and even death.

Orthorexia often begins with a desire to overcome a chronic illness or to improve general health so people start watching what they eat. Unlike anorexics who want to just lose weight; othorexics have different motives for their behaviour.

People with orthorexia strive to be pure, healthy and back to what they call nature. **End Summary** Topics: Orthorexia eating disorder healthy eating
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.

Diabulimia is an eating disorder that is becoming more common among people with type 1 diabetes, especially in teenagers who are more affected than adults.

This is happening because teens often lose weight before their diabetes is diagnosed but then when their insulin treatment begins they quickly gain weight. Some teens get very unhappy with the fact they are putting on weight, they then figure out that if they skip an insulin dose it is possible to lose weight.

It is estimated that among type 1 diabetics the prevalence of eating disorders is 2-6 times higher than in general population. Nearly a quota of females with type 1 diabetes may have a diagnosable eating disorder. This happens because both disorders (diabetes and eating disorders) involve the control of food consumption and body weight. Food for both individuals is no longer considered to be just for nutrition but the object of strict control. **End Summary** Topics: diabulimia eating disorders in diabetics diabates and eating disorders
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
Pregorexia : Is It A Selfish Obsession Or A Cultural Problem With Modern Women?

Pregnancy has always been a time when a woman can put on 30 -35 pounds and still feel good and proud of herself, after all she is bringing a new life into the world.

But now it is not like this for every woman. A new study shows that 20% of all pregnant women in the Western world do not gain enough weight during pregnancy.

These women don't eat enough during pregnancy or induce vomiting, overexercise, take laxatives and diuretics. They do these dangerous things for the sake of having a slim figure during and immediately after pregnancy.

Many of these women get inspired by the super-slim celebrities whose pregnant images we often see on TV and magazine covers. These celebrities manage to go through their whole pregnancy without putting on much weight and continue to look slim. They keep their belly bump small so they become skinny again immediately after their baby is born. This unnatural "skinny" image becomes a role model of many other "non-celebrity" women to follow.

So, how much weight should a woman gain during a normal pregnancy? **End Summary** Topics: pregorexia anorexia and pregnancy anorexia
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
9 Types of Food that are Extremely Important for Your Eating Disorder Recovery

I am often asked what kind of food I would recommend for eating disorders sufferers that can help them to develop new neuronal pathways in order to stop their eating disorders.

Of course my first suggestion would be to eat a balanced meal but I do have certain foods I can recommend to make brain changes easier. Here is my list:

1. Omega- 3 acid products: Omega -3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids but it cannot be manufactured by the body. For this reason omega-3 acids must be obtain from food. It helps to keep your heart in good shape, blood vessels and most importantly your brain. It as been proven by scientific experiments that omega-3 acids improve learning processes and makes your brain work clearer. Deficiency of Omega- 3 causes tiredness, lethargy, poor concentration and memory: plus a constant feeling of stress and anxiety.

This is especially important to know for anorexics and bulimics because their body is normally lacking omega-3. And this contributes to even more mental and perception problems. **End Summary** Topics: eating disorders food and eating disorders eating disorder
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.
Is Anorexia a Form of Brainwashing?

I have been interested for a long time regarding what makes people change their beliefs, mindset, and attitudes towards things. I firmly believe that most eating disorders are caused by people's wrong beliefs and attitudes towards themselves and others. Genetic predisposition also plays the role too.

Once I was reading an article about brainwashing. Brainwashing is any effort aimed towards instilling in the mind of one person different beliefs and attitudes that eventually make a person behave in a certain way and believe in certain things.

Brainwashing was used a lot by communists to spread the mentality of communism. It was also used on war prisoners in the Korean war - when American soldiers after being captured and kept in Chinese camps sometimes ended up taking the side of the communists and considered themselves to be their supporters.

Brainwashing occurs when people join cults or weird religious groups. These change people's identity completely, just like anorexia changes people's identity completely.

So, you see, brainwashing is something that can change your total identity. The media does it all the time too. And not just only the media things like the culture you live in can also brainwash you. **End Summary** Topics: anorexia anorexia and brainwashing anorexia causes
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Eating Disorder Institute.

In 2006 the Australian Government launched a $6 million campaign to reduce Child obesity and the Australian Medical Association (AMA) welcomed the focus on kids' health.

The idea was to focus on junk food and get parents to stop the child from eating fast foods, sweets and other unhealthy foods. TV, radio and newspapers were running government sponsored ads to point out the dangers of these kinds of foods, with the idea to get kids eating more healthy foods.

This at the time seemed a very noble cause as overweight kids are a big problem in all western countries. The government was correct that for these overweight kids there was a great risk to their health from diseases such as diabetes, heart problems and high blood pressure etc, in later life.

What they did not factor in was the psychological effects on these overweight kids and may have inadvertently created a whole new generation of eating disorder victims. Kids were encouraged to start diet clubs at school and there have been stories of kids being weighed at school, at times in front of the whole class. **End Summary** Topics: childhood obesity eating disorders in children Child Obesity
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program which covers different areas of Women Health.
How to Develop Neuronal Networks to Cure Eating Disorders

A neuronal network is a group of connected neurons (brain cells) which are related to certain behaviours or certain functions in the body. The human brain has thousands of neuronal networks for different human behaviours or functions. An eating disorder takes an enormous amount of brain space because the disorder creates many neuronal networks, each related to certain eating disorder behaviour. For instance, people have certain neuronal networks for their binging-purging behaviour (bulimia), another one for starving (anorexia), others for taking laxatives or over exercising etc.

This is why when someone starts a particular destructive behaviour; it is extremely difficult to stop doing it because multiple new neuronal networks get built. These newly activated neuronal networks soon turn into a chain reaction within the brain. One neuron connects onto many others and they all start to shoot electric impulses which are spread to the connecting neurons and the reaction goes on, forming strong bonds that straighten with use: e.g. false emotions and feelings, like I am too fat.

These eating disorder's networks get activated when people put into action faulty behaviours and start abnormal action like binging, purging, starving etc. **End Summary** Topics: Neuronal Networks Eating Disorders cure
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program which covers different areas of Women Health.
Eating Disorders Are Result Of Brain Plasticity

What is brain plasticity? And how is it related to developing an eating disorder?

Brain plasticity, or neuroplasticity, is the lifelong ability of the brain to change itself based on new experiences. When we say "the brains ability to change" we don't mean something mystical or just "spiritual".

What we are alluding to is the brains ability to reorganise or rewire its neuronal pathways that has lead to certain wanted or unwanted actions or behaviours. For example, in case of people suffering with eating disorders it is unwanted actions like negative thoughts about their body image that lead to the development of at ED. This could have manifested itself by starving, overexercising or binging and purging over a period of time.

When people start having bad thoughts and feelings about themselves their brain begins to develop certain new neuronal wiring (or connections) to produce certain behaviours. When people continue to acting on pathological behaviours like starving, binging-purging, over exercising etc: these neuronal pathways grow stronger and stronger. Basically it is what you think is what you get.

You see any behaviour we have or regular thoughts we think there are certain brain maps developed and pathways formed. **End Summary** Topics: brain plasticity brain plasticity and eating disorders eating disorders and neuroplasticity
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program which covers different areas of Women Health.
Neuroplasticity Is The Key To Eating Disorders Treatment

Researchers are now suggesting that neuroplasticity could be the answer to treating eating disorders. They are of the view that our own brains, thoughts and emotions are not rigid or fixed in place. But can be changed in order to treat and even cure eating disorders.

So what is neuroplasticity? Let's define it. The first part neuro is for neurone (which are the nerve cells in the brain) and plasticity means plastic or changeable. Neuroplasticity is the property of the brain that allows the brain to change itself.

These changes occur in four ways:
(1) By responding to the world in a certain way
(2) By perceiving the world in a certain way
(3) By acting in the world in a certain way
(4) By thinking and imagining in a certain way.

All these activities can change the brain and the way it functions. With "directed Neuroplasticity" scientists and clinicians can pass onto the brain a calculated sequence of input and/or specific patterns of stimulation to make desirable and specific changes in the brain for the better. **End Summary** Topics: Neuroplasticity Eating disorders treatment Neuroplasticity for Eating disorders
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program.
5 Invaluable Tips On Becoming Pregnant Fast

How to become pregnant fast? Many people want to know the answer to this question. There are some tips which will definitely improve your chances on becoming pregnant fast. Let's look at the 5 main ones, but you should only follow these tips if you know that there are no other medical problems with you and your partner. But if you or your partner do have medical problems then you should address them first by checking it out with your doctor.

Tip 1: is to generally improve your health before trying to conceive. Very often people suffer infertility as a result of a bad life style. Things like regular moderate exercise; healthy eating, avoiding contact with chemicals and normalising your weight can help enormously in trying to conceive.Reducing (or better still eliminating) alcohol and nicotine consumption will play a positive role in your efforts to conceive a healthy child.

Relaxation and feeling happy are also major points in your preparation for a healthy pregnancy. Remember that it is extremely difficult to become pregnant if you are stressed and horribly unhappy. Falling pregnant will simply not happen for you if you are in a bad mood all the time. **End Summary** Topics: become pregnant how to become pregnant
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program.
Become Pregnant At Your Next Ovulation

You would be surprised how many women miss their best time to become pregnant: this is the exact time of ovulation. The best time only lasts for 1-2 days in a month (for women whose ovulation runs monthly). But for most women after 35yrs ovulation can occur once in a few months. And the older you get the rarer your ovulation happens.

There are many artificial methods that pinpoint your ovulation- like urine test, saliva test and the like. But not all of them are very accurate in giving you the exact time of ovulation; sometimes it is too late when they show positive.

For many women using a natural ovulation method is much more reliable in showing their fertile time then any of the artificial devices.

One of these natural fertility methods is watching for changes in cervical mucus. As ovulation approaches your cervical mucus changes to a more fertile egg white in consistency mucus. This helps sperm to swim through better and faster. After ovulation your cervical mucus changes back to a normal less fertile consistency.

So when your cervical mucus is egg white in consistency means your ovulation time is approaching. **End Summary** Topics: become pregnant becoming pregnant how to become pregnant
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program.
How to Stop a Binge If You Have Bulimia

To stop a binge is probably the most difficult tusk for a bulimic. All sufferers say that when the thoughts come about binging it is nearly impossible for them to stop. And the longer it goes on the more it becomes uncontrollable.

Moreover, many bulimics lose the ability to recognize when they are full and the ability to say what size of meal is normal for them to eat. They swing between bulimia and anorexia: if they try not to binge - they stop eating altogether and go into anorexic mode, when they start to eat - they go into a binge mode: for many there is no middle ground.

It takes time to re-learn again what a normal meal is and how to eat without binging. To re-learn how to eat normally they need constant remainders about what is normal and what is an abnormal meal.

How to fix this? **End Summary** Topics: how to stop a binge bulimia binge bulimic binge stop binge
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program which covers different areas of Women Health.
History Of Bulimia And How It Evolved Into a New Problem

The History of bulimia is old. Even in ancient Rome people used to vomit up food they ate in the period of feasting. They even had special places for it called "vomitorium". There is a lot of recollection about these events in ancient Rome books. Roman emperors Claudius and Vitellius were bulimic.

Some other cultures like ancient Egyptian purged themselves every month for three days in succession, using emetics and clysters to preserve health. They thought that human diseases come from food.

In Europe in Middle Ages purgation was used like a remedy for many diseases and was advocated by middle age physicians.

In ancient Greece and Arabia there were also descriptions in texts of binging and purging.

But all these ancient practices of binging and purging are similar but not the same as what we call "bulimia" now. There was no evidence of a drive for thinness that is the obvious trait in all modern bulimics; in fact skinny women were not the normal shape for women.

From the evidence that have been reported it is obvious that bulimia nervosa as it is presented now was an unknown disease until the late 20th century. **End Summary** Topics: History Of Bulimia bulimia bulimia in the past
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program which covers different areas of Women Health.
Getting Pregnant After Miscarriage

Is getting pregnant after a miscarriage any different from getting pregnant if you never been pregnant before?

Yes and no. No different because you still have to fall pregnant at your ovulation time and it is better to know when that will happen.

But it is also different because you need to look at the reasons why a miscarriage occur in the first place and try to avoid it happening again.

Miscarriages can occur for different reasons: being under stress, contracting an illness, physical trauma or many other reasons that remain unknown.

The reasons that remain unknown are normally related to fetus abnormalities. And very often it is due to fertilization which occurs because of old sperm with an old egg that is defective.

Let me explain...

In order to achieve healthy conception you need a freshly released egg and fresh sperm. Sperm is considered to be fresh and viable on 1st and maybe 2nd day after ejaculation. But the normal life span of sperm is around 3 days.

So, if on the third day after ejaculation the sperm fertilizes the egg, the pregnancy is likely to abort in the early stages.

The same thing can happen with old eggs. **End Summary** Topics: getting pregnant after miscarriage get pregnant getting pregnant
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program.
Personal Web-Sites About Bulimia Nervosa

Do you think personal sites about bulimia give you better information about this disease? I personally think yes, they do.

Although professional medical sites provide you with a lot of statistics, description of the symptoms and probable dangers of bulimia, personal sites show a human side to the problem.

They show people\'s stories about how they contracted the disease, how they cope with it and treated it.

And the readers can relate themselves to these stories, relate to the feelings and thoughts and emotions which are revealed on someone\'s personal site.

It is proven that we humans learn much better and faster by following other people examples and using someone as a role model then by following a cold script in a textbook.

I love to search personal sites. Once I found site which broke my heart. It was a story of an extraordinary mother whose daughter suffered anorexia-bulimia for more then ten years.

This lady (Karen) tells all her and her daughter story: from the time before the disease to the time when the disease was beaten.

The story evokes so many emotions in my soul because I can relate myself to it. **End Summary** Topics: personal web-sites about bulimia bulimia help bulimia cure
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program which covers different areas of Women Health.
Best Time To Get Pregnant

When is the best time to get pregnant? How many women (and maybe men) want to know the answer to this simple question?

But is this question really simple to answer? For some people maybe yes. But for others who have been trying to conceive for a long time and have never succeeded it is not.

So, when you are likely to conceive? Of course it is at ovulation time when an egg is released and ready to be fertilized. But why is pregnancy so difficult to achieve sometimes?

What happens is: when a woman is young (in her twenties) she ovulates nearly every month, excluding the time of severe stress, illness or other changes that affect ripening and releasing an egg.

The older she becomes her ovulation comes less often. Some women may have a chronic condition or illnesses that can also make ovulation irregular.

So a women in her late 30s or 40s who are still trying to get pregnant but can't despite of having frequent intercourse, may experience ovulation only once in 2-3 months, in some cases maybe even less often. **End Summary** Topics: best time to get pregnant get pregnant getting pregnant
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program which covers different areas of Women Health.
Mom, Please Help: a True Anorexia Bulimia Story.Part 3

When Amy and I saw our local doctor, he told us that Amy had this dangerous disease called anorexia.

Well! I nearly fell of my chair; I just could not understand how in the world this had happened to Amy. I knew absolutely nothing about anorexia, except what a had read about movie stars who supposedly had all these kinds of problems through the stress of keeping thin for their careers, but Amy was only a little girl. She didn't have these kind of pressures how could she have anorexia?

Dr Thomson told me what he could and recommended we try and get Amy to see a councilor as soon as we could. He told me people die because of anorexia, it is a psychological problem not an eating one.

That the eating is a symptom of a bigger problem and we have to get to the bottom of the problem to fix it. There is nothing he could prescribe only getting her to a councilor was her only chance, or she probably would die.

I sat there completely dumb founded, my little girl could die. **End Summary** Topics: anorexia story bulimia story anorexia-bulimia
About the Author:
Dr Irina Webster MD is the Director of Women Health Issues Program which covers different areas of Women Health.
