Valentines Day Is Over-Rated

A few days after Christmas store fronts were filled with cuddly stuffed animals, heart-shaped chocolate boxes, and candy hearts with little sayings on them.

Some believe that February 14th is the most romantic day of the year, while others are ready to boycott the money making holiday for it has become over-rated. Forgive me if I decline to enthusiastically join this commercialized holiday ritual.

Valentines Day at one time was a symbol of youthful love. Though the origin of the day is somewhat hazy, the importance of the day has been stripped by the commercialism that now puts a huge guilt trip on us to show our love" by purchasing our significant other a gift they don't really need or want.

Valentine's Day ranks second to Christmas in terms of the number of greeting cards that are sent. How pathetic is that.

If my husband does choose to give in to the commercialism of this holiday, I hope he does it days after. I'd much rather has a discount box of chocolates. I know that I've been guilty of contributing to the pockets of the retailer. Go ahead, call me a hypocrite. **End Summary** Topics: Valentine Day Valentines Day Valentine\'s Day Happy Valentines day
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is a published poet and freelance writer.
Honor Them With A Dance

As I look back on my life, I realize that everything happens for a reason. I watch the seasons of my life quickly pass me by and I think about how we are born, we live and we die. I think of those so deep in their job that they neglect those around them.

They put off calling those they love until tomorrow, but tomorrow never does come and then it's sadly too late. When you look at the word Hello, look at it as a dance. When you pick up the phone or stop by to visit a loved one and let them know you are still around; you are honoring them with that dance.

Let me tell you a story.

Roger was a man who, from the time he was a young teen, he shut out those around him. He put his mind into his work. His mother and father both died before he was 40 and he didn't talk to either of his teen boys. He never had much of a relationship with them growing up and he had disowned his only sister. **End Summary** Topics: Everyday Life Family life Family Issues Family Advice
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the founder of Today's Woman Writing Community http://www.todays-woman.net, a supportive online writing community for men and women over 18.
The Feminist Movement - Yesterday's Woman Vs Today's Feminist

I'm a guide, mentor, mother, nurturer, wife, and friend. I am a new woman in an ever changing new world. When life gives me lemons, I take those lemons and makes lemonade.

As a woman, I have the same goals in mind today as my mother did yesterday. I want just as much to raise and care for my children in a healthy home environment. The only difference between me and my mother is that she was born in 1932, a time of poverty. By the age of 12, she was at home raising her brothers and sisters instead of attending school.

My mother grew into a woman and took on the job of mother and wife. She never worked outside of the home until my father's death in 1988. At this time she was forced back into the workforce with no education and little job experience. She returned to the factory that she had worked at before marriage until ill health required her to retire early. But she did what she had to do to survive. **End Summary** Topics: feminist feminist movement Today\'s Femenist Stay at home Moms Sahm
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the founder of Today's Woman Writing Community http://www.todays-woman.net, a supportive online writing community for men and women over 18.
How To Optimize Your Blog For Search Engines

Blogs are naturally search engine friendly and optimizing your blog for search engines is really no different than optimizing your website.

Here are some suggestions to get you started.

Back Links: Backlinks play a very big role in Google's pagerank algorithm. Backlinks are extremely important to your blog's rankings, so make sure you have a large number of backlinks.

Here is a list of places to submit your feed or blog.

http://www.bloggertalk.net/blog_resources-cat-369.html

Make use of the alt description tag: Spider bots cannot read images, so when adding images to your blog it's important to place information within the alt and anchor text of pictures.

Make good use of anchor text: Don't use "click here" or other non-descriptive link text. Always use keywords as your anchor text. Google loves anchor text.

Use relevant keywords: Did you know that in a 48 hour period there was 6138 searches done for game cheats? Wow! It looks like a majority of gamers are cheaters. When creating titles for your blog posts think about the words that web surfers will be typing to find your blog.

'Inventory Overture Keyword Selector Tool' is one of the best-known services for helping you choose the right keywords. **End Summary** Topics: Search engine optimisation Blog optimisation.
Major Search Engine Submission: How To Get Listed In Google, Yahoo And MSN

Bloggers often ask how to get their blog listed in the major search engines.

Here's how:

1. Submit Directly: Submit your blog via Google's free submitting form. http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

2. Submit your sitemap to Google. http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/

3. Submit your site to DMOZ, the Open Directory Project. Keep in mind that http://DMOZ.com is run by volunteers; therefore it may take some time before you are listed and a submission does not guarantee listing.

4. Get a Qualified Backlink: Get linked from a website that search engines crawl regularly and add your link to forum signatures. Google states, Google's robots jump from page to page on the web via hyperlinks, so the more sites that link to your pages, the more likely it is that we'll find them quickly.

5. If your blog isn't already listed in Google's Blog search engine, you can submit it manually. Add your blog to Google's Blog Search. http://blogsearch.google.com/ping

It usually takes a new website about a month before it's fully indexed by Google. Google Blog Search indexes blogs by their site feeds, so be sure that you publish a site feed. **End Summary** Topics: Blog Directory Yahoo Msn Search Engine Submission Google Sitemap
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the founder of Blogger Talk Blog Community <a target="_new" href="http://www.bloggertalk.net">http://www.bloggertalk.net</a> , a friendly fast growing blogging portal, offering bloggers support, advice, tools, tips and information about blogs and blogging.
Understanding Fair Use Rights

What is copyright? Copyright is defined as The legal protection given to authors which protects them against unauthorized copying of their work. Copyright infringement is defined as a violation of the rights secured by a copyright.

All writers at one time or another have quoted something someone else has written. I see it all the time throughout the writing industry. Maybe you quoted the lines of a poem or a line from an article or the words from a song. I quoted the work of another author in the above paragraph, where I defined copyright. Given my example in the opening paragraph, did I just infringe on the author's copyright? Should I have gotten permission from the said author to quote them? No, under what is known as fair use", I may quote the author without seeking permission.

There is a misconception in the writing world about what fair use is. Fair use is defined as a concept in copyright law that allows limited use of copyright material without requiring permission from the rights holders, eg, for scholarship or review. **End Summary** Topics: Copyright Fair Use Rights faur use law fair use copyright laws
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the founder of Today's Woman Writing Community http://www.todays-woman.net, a supportive online writing community for men and women over 18.
Promoting Your Poetry Book

At long last your book is finished. As a self-publisher poet it is up to you to market your anthology or chapbook. Self-publishing requires you to self-market successfully. Marketing your book can become a full time job and it isn't going to happen overnight. So you might be asking yourself, Where do I begin to market my book?

Website

Create a website to showcase your book. Did you know that blogging is a great way to advertise your book? Google bots crawl blogs more often, than other web sites. If you would like a professional website and know little about creating a website, I recommend hiring a web designer. http://invision-graphics.com offers writing templates and book covering design.

Reciprocal linking

Once you have a website, you can generate targeted traffic through reciprocal linking with related high traffic web sites.

Join a Community

Online communities and discussion groups are a great way to meet people. Most communities do not allow advertising. So if you jump right in advertising your book, you may find yourself removed. Instead join in a few discussions. **End Summary** Topics: Advertising poetry marketing Press Releases Radio
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the founder of Today's Woman Writing Community http://www.todays-woman.net, a supportive online writing community for men and women over 18.

There is a rising trend in Paypal phishing scams. The latest Paypal spoof I received warns me that my Paypal account has been suspended. It asks me to restore full access to my account by logging in to Paypal. When I click on the link provided in the email, I am sent to a website that looks exactly like the PayPal login page. But the link does not go to Paypal.

This is the link displayed in the email I received.

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run

When you click on the link it actually takes you to a phisers page.

It is generally not a good idea to click on links in an email. If you do, be sure that you are signing into the Paypal website by looking at the address location area of your browser.

If you have already replied to the fraudulent email, contact your bank or credit card companies immediately to prevent identity theft. If you wish to check your Paypal account status, manually type PayPal's address into your browser and log in normally.

I was able to tell that it was a spoof email because the email began with Dear PayPal member. **End Summary** Topics: Spoof Pay Pal spoof phishing fraudulent email
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the founder of Today's Woman Writing Community http://www.todays-woman.net, a supportive online writing community for men and women over 18.

My daughter's grade 8 grad is coming up in June and I was eagerly thinking of ways to keep the cost down. Even grade 8 grad is a big time in a girls life. This is a night for my daughter to remember but it shouldn't cost me and my husband a fortune.

For many parents prom is an expensive time of year and families are struggling financially to give their son or daughter the perfect night that they will remember a life time. Well there is no reason why you can't give them that night but on a budget you can afford. I have put together ten tips to help you save a few dollars. Attending a prom doesn't have to cost a fortune. Prom night doesn't have to break us. Girls the memories of prom will not be if you spent 20 dollars to get your nails done or arrived in a limo. The memories will be of who you were in school and the special times that you all shared.

Thanksgiving Thoughts: Thankfulness In Times Of Trouble

Thanksgiving is a time for food, celebration, and fun. Every year on Thanksgiving, families gather around the table to enjoy a meal and give thanks. But for some folks, Thanksgiving can be a lonely time. Many adults spend the holidays feeling isolated and depressed.

Today as we celebrate this Thanksgiving, it is important to remember that it's about more than being thankful for one day, it is an entire lifetime. Today is the day to be thankful for all the things in your life, no matter how big they are, or how small. Even in our deepest sorrow, we can find things to be thankful for.

Holidays bring out emotional pain. This time of year can be difficult for any one who has suffered a loss. Should you be missing loved ones this holiday, rejoice in the knowledge that they are with God. Don't push yourself today; allow yourself that time to grieve.

For those who may be feeling depressed this Thanksgiving holiday, open your heart to giving. Helping other people in need is a wonderful way to celebrate the day and may make you feel less alone. **End Summary** Topics: Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Blessings Thanksgiving thoughts thanksgiving prayer
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the founder of Today's Woman Writing Community http://www.todays-woman.net, a supportive online writing community for men and women over 18.

Backlinks play a very big role in Google's pagerank algorithm. There are several ways to get backlinks to your site. Let's get started.

1. Directories: Get your website listed in Yahoo and DMOZ (The Open Directory Project). Dmoz can be extremely difficult to get listed it, but no worries as there are a great number of directories online.

Like http://www.invision-graphics.com/link-directory.html which has a pagerank of 5/10.

2. Reciprocal links: Find reciprocal link exchange partners and exchange links. One way to find reciprocal link partners is to search Google's Directory. The green bar next to each link tells the page rank. If the bar is green half way across, then that page has a PR of 5. If it's green all the way across then the page has a PR of ten.

3. Forum Signatures: Most Forums allow a user to add a signature tag to their posts. Signature tags allow you to promote your website and by doing this you will also increase your link popularity. Be sure to use keywords in your anchor text. **End Summary** Topics: Backlinks google backlinks seo optimization blogger backlinks Reciprocal links Press Releases
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the founder of Blogger Talk Blog Community http://www.bloggertalk.net - a community portal for bloggers.Visit her new blog Rose DesRochers Bizarre news http://rosedesrochers.net .
Poetry Critique - Critique The Poem - Not The Poet

The act of writing poetry is something that is very personal to us poets, and sharing it for the first time can be a very frightening experience. The first experience of having your work criticized can boggle your mind and set you back a step in your writing. However, critique is essential in any writer's career. Accepting criticism is something that we all must face, even if we don't like it.

When I received my first harsh critique, it was on an Ezboard workshop, and right then I wanted to give up writing. My critics were arrogant and, in my opinion, very mean. It was a most painful experience. After running an online writing community for the last four years, I have met a few arrogant and mean people, just like the one on Ezboard. I think that some of these poets have gone to workshops, and have been critiqued in this manner, so now they think this is how one critiques. Wrong!

How to give a critique:

Short reviews like: "good poem," "I like this," and "awesome," are not useful to any poet. When giving a critique, remember that poets are looking for an in-depth critique. **End Summary** Topics: Poetry Critique Critiquing Poetry Poetry Critique Forums Poetry Rose DesRochers
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the founder of Blogger Talk Blog Community http://www.bloggertalk.net, a friendly fast growing blogging portal, offering bloggers support, advice, tools, tips and information about blogs and blogging.

It appears that today everyone is a writer, and we all have the same dream. We all hope to someday be published. So as writers, where do we get started?

I suggest joining writing groups first and start seeking feedback that can help your career as a writer. It is most likely that your closest friends and family are telling you that your writing is the greatest thing since Steven King's, and maybe it is, but it doesn't hurt to get some feedback from your fellow writers.

Once you are ready to take that plunge into the deep oceans of writing to see your work published for the first time, the best places to start are magazines and e-zines looking for calls for submission. For example, there are over 150 publishers listed on the Today's Woman Writing Community website, all looking for stories and poetry.

You are going to want to purchase a copy of Writer's Market that is published annually. This is an essential book for writers who are interested in publishing their work. You are also going to want to research your market. **End Summary** Topics: Rose DesRochers how to get published Published how to get a book published published poem self
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is a published poet and freelance writer.
Are You Your Own Worst Enemy Or Your Own Best Friend?

Are you the kind of person who is your own worst enemy? Do you live your life with doubt, always trying to live up to the standards others set for you? Life can be filled with disappointments if we live each day seeking the approval of others.

Remember that you are who you are because of you, not because of another's perception of you. At the end of your life the only important question will be: "Did you live your life as you saw fit?"

In all honesty, I can be my own worse enemy. I let people get the better of me.

When you let someone get the best of you than you are really letting them win. In life we are faced with the joy of living life or the pain and disappointment of not living life to its fullest.

I have always gotten by the strength and courage that I learned from my mother. One thing that she taught me was that life is a battle and sometimes you have to fight or you will die having never tried. **End Summary** Topics: Self help motivation Rose DesRochers depression self help self help advice self help
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is a published poet and freelance writer.
Seven Common SEO Mistakes

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Most of your quality traffic comes from search engines, therefore when building a website it is important to know the hints, tips and tricks that will give you better placement in the search engines. Mistakes can actually hurt your site in the search engines without you even realizing it. I have come across a number of websites in which beginners not yet familiar with search engine optimization make the same common mistakes.

Are you making these seven common mistakes too?

1. Irrelevant keywords: Many webmasters use irrelevant Keywords. Be sure to choose the right keywords that relate to your company. Be specific. Think about the words that web surfers will be typing to find your website. Inventory overture keyword selector Tool is one of the best-known services for helping you choose the right keywords. Use Inventory overture keyword selector Tool to find what people are actually typing in to the search engines.

2. No back links: Back links are extremely important to your website's rankings, therefore this should be one of your main priorities. The easiest way to get back links is to ask for them. **End Summary** Topics: SEO mistakes Search engine optimization Search engine placement search engine marketing
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is the assistant administrator of Invision Graphics Webmaster forum http://www.invision-graphics.com the ultimate webmaster resource center offering you free downloads, webmaster resource links, top sites, a free link directory, and a friendly support forum.

When do we start taking responsibility for our own actions? It appears that we no longer own our actions. Owning our actions involves taking personal responsibility for what we do. Why is it that when something goes wrong, we need some place else to lay the blame? Part of being a mature, responsible adult is knowing that when we make a decision in life, we are responsible for the outcome, not someone else.

Let’s look at the following examples:

A married man goes out and has an affair. He blames the wife for not satisfying his needs in bed. Did he ever stop to think that maybe his problem lies with him and not with his wife?

Your electricity gets turned off because you didn’t pay the bill. Do you blame the mail man for not bringing the bill? Do you blame the electrical company, because you didn’t receive the bill? You knew the bill was due. You pay it every month, don’t you? It comes down to responsibility.

You join a website and the administrator bans you for breaking the terms of service. You blame the administrator? Why? **End Summary** Topics: Rose DesRochers Motivational Responsibility social responsibility parental responsibility
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is a published poet and freelance writer.
Rose Desrochers’s 7 Tips: How Do You Generate Traffic To Your Website Or Blog?

Ahh yes, the question that is on everyone’s mind is ‘How do you generate traffic to your website or blog?’ Many first-time bloggers assume that you make a few posts, submit your blog to the search engines and traffic will come naturally. It's not that simple and it takes a little more work than just that.

Here are seven tips to generate traffic to your website or blog.

1. The primary way of promoting any website is by creating valuable content. It is important to have something of value to offer to your readership. Adding quality content to your Web site or blog is the best way to keep visitors returning. Not only will it keep them coming back, but it will encourage them to create links to your website or blog. Make sure that you update your content regularly. Once people realize that you add fresh content regularly, then they will constantly check back to see what is new. The purpose of having a website or blog is to attract regular visitors.

2. You've worked really hard on your Blog, but no one is reading it. **End Summary** Topics: Rose DesRochers Blogs Blogging pingoat Technorati free e-books
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is a published poet and freelance writer.
You've finally created a blog and you've made your first post. Now how do you get people to actually read what you're blogging about?

Here are some tips on promoting your blog.

1) Quality Content - Interesting content will keep your readership returning. Update your blog regularly.

Googlebot, which is Google's web-crawling robot loves content. The more you update your blog, the more frequent the search engine spiders will return to it.

2) Take part in forums that are related to blogging. Ask other bloggers for their opinion on your blog and take their suggestions to heart.

Ask other bloggers for their opinion on your blog and take their suggestions to heart.

3) Publish an RSS/Atom/XML feed. If you're using Blogger, you can turn on RSS feed by clicking on settings in your dashboard and then clicking on site feed and make sure that your settings are set to yes.

4) Carefully choose your subject titles, taking into consideration what other internet users may be searching for.

Use keywords in your title. I suggest subscribing to Word Tracker. Their report of the most popular searches is published each Tuesday and distributed to over 30,000 subscribers.

I Don't Even Know Your Last Name, But Let's Hook Up! : Teen Relationships

The times are changing. I have come to the conclusion that old fashioned dating is a thing of the past; today’s youth have turned to casual and random “hook ups.”

Teens are in such a hurry to grow up. As the mother of a teen daughter, I have seen this first hand and it is frightening. Parents want the best for their children, but how do we protect them from the unhealthy consequences associated with random hook ups.

Excuse me, but ladies you need to have a little self-respect here.

In high school, dating has been replaced with random hookups that in turn result in meaningless relationships. What happened to taking things slow and getting to know one another? Young girls feel a need to have a boyfriend. They are unable to be independent. It is low self-esteem along with a need to feel loved by a male figure that leads girls into these unhealthy relationships.

Unlike when I was a teen dating, young men now no longer need to earn a girls respect. There is no longer any courtship. A young lady meets a young man and the next day there already boyfriend and girlfriend. **End Summary** Topics: relationships dating teen relationships teen dating teens parenting
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is a published poet and freelance writer.
Teens And Blogs - Internet Safety Wake-Up Call

In November of 2005, I read that a Roman Catholic high school in Sparta had ordered its students to remove personal blogs from the Internet, in the name of protecting them from cyberpredators. Which brings me to an important question, just how can you keep your child safe online?

The Internet is a "gateway" which leads the adult predator to your child. Parents need to recognize the need to better monitor their children’s online activity. I believe that websites like xanga, myspace, and livejournal, make it all too easy for sexual predators to prey on our children.

Children are vulnerable and they don’t realize that anyone can and most likely is reading their blog entries. Both my children have blogs, however they are under moderation by both my husband and I. Frankly, as a parent of two teenagers I believe that it is up to us as parents to educate our children about the online dangers.

Children's blogs are a pedophile’s playground, because of the easy ability to look into a child’s world. As parents we can help our children stay safe while using a blog. **End Summary** Topics: myspace blog blog blog site internet safety internet child safety internet safety for teen
About the Author:
Rose DesRochers is a published poet and freelance writer.
