This is the tale of a medieval Water Mill which now is a holiday cottage deep in the Creuse countryside. Here we have one of a collection of items telling the story of the mill and detailing the environs of Le Moulin de Pont de Chez Lord, France 23430.

When the mill was constructed the Limousin region of France was controlled by British soldiery. The mill was built in around the year 1271 and the local commander of the garrison lived in a dwelling alongside a bridge over the small river Beraude. Perhaps because he was a member of the British nobility the locality became recognized as Le Pont de Chez Lord which means literally ---- The Bridge by the House of the Lord.

Le Moulin de Chez Lord (which means The Mill by the House of the Lord) was constructed close to the residence of the English milord. It was required to prepare the flour to bake bread to feed the troops and also to grind the oats for the horses. It is not generally known that the potato did not exist in Europe until very roughly 1450. **End Summary** Topics: France self catering holiday cottage Travel water mill
About the Author:
A retired English University Professor now living in France where he is restoring a 700 year old water mill.

Can I now tell a tale of a medieval Water Mill which has become a holiday retreat deep in the Creuse countryside. Now I am relating one of a collection of items relating the story of and detailing the environs of Le Moulin Chez Lord, France 23430.

When the watermill was built the Limousin part of France was controlled by the English military. The mill was built in about the year.

1279 and the local commander of the garrison lived in a dwelling alongside the bridge over the river Beraude. Probably because he was a member of the British gentry the locality became known as Le Pont de Chez Lord meaning literally ---- The Bridge by the House of the Lord.

Le Moulin de Chez Lord (which means The Mill by the House of the Lord) was constructed close to the house of the English milord. It was necessary to make the flour to prepare bread to feed the soldiery and also to prepare the oats for the horses. It is easy to forget that the potato did not arrive in France until the middle of the 15th century. **End Summary** Topics: Travel self catering holiday cottage vacation rental villas watermill
About the Author:
I am a retired English University Professor now living in France where I am restoring a 700 year old water mill.

This is the tale of our Water Mill which now is a holiday home deep in the French countryside. Here we have one of a series of articles telling the story of the mill and detailing the environs of Le Moulin Chez Lord, France 23430.

When the water mill was built the Limousin area of France was controlled by the British troops. The mill was built in about 1278 and the regional commander of the garrison lived in a house alongside a bridge over the river Beraude. Since he was a member of the English aristocracy the area became known as Le Pont de Chez Lord meaning literally ---- The Bridge of the House of the Lord.

Le Moulin de Chez Lord (which means The Mill of the House of the Lord) was built close by the house. It was needed to mill the flour to make bread to feed the military and also to grind the oats for the horses. Do not forget that this was long before the arrival in Europe of the potato and bread was the main source of carbohydrate. The mill was still in use until the 1980s when it ground cow feed. **End Summary** Topics: Travel self catering holiday cottage vacation rental villas watermill
About the Author:
I am a retired English University Professor now living in France where I am restoring a 700 year old water mill.
