Dynamite comes in small packages. Nub sized ones. This is especially true with the arrival of Cain F Nub. Litto Gomezâs Small Batch has Big Demand

I’d say the third times the charm but let’s face it- all the cigars Litto makes tend to be winners. The latest limited edition from La Flor Dominicana, Litto Gomez has released Small Batch #3 to a very anxious world of cigar lovers. A Dominican puro, the binder and filler consist of tobacco grown on Litto’s farm in 2004. This tobacco is rare. This tobacco is in limited supply. And this tobacco is awesome. This installment of Small Batch is enveloped in a strikingly beautiful, dark Sumatra-seed wrapper. A particularly brilliant choice, the blending of this cigar fashions a very flavorful and complex stick, riddled with spice but sprinkled with sweetness. Nuances of cedar fill the gaps so perfectly that I dare say this is my favorite of the limited editions from camp La Flor Dominicana. But I should warn you, this cigar is on the meaty side. Meaning, eat some serious meat before you settle in to smoke it….Like two giant steaks worth. Last year, Camacho introduced the cigar world to Matt Booth and his edgy, fantastic style with Room 101. Famous already for his clothing, jewelry, and accessories, Matt definitely brought a much needed point of view to the industry. For those of us who already see cigars as a kind of art form, Matt Booth fit riiiiight in. This creatively executed concept coupled with a darn right tasty cigar ignited something new in the cigar world which made Room 101 a favorite at my local tobacco hangout, Emerson’s Cigars. I think if Santa was a cigar smoker (the rumor is he’s a pipe man) then the latest cigar from Abraham Flores would be his stick of choice. Though not officially released until IPCPR 2011, 1500-2000 of the brand spankin’ new PDR 1878 Reserva Dominica Capa Oscura were given to select retailers around the country. Lucky for me, one of them was my local brick and mortar, Emerson’s Cigars. Originally coined the Holiday Blend (another selling point for Santa) this cigar has been blowing up the blogs and peaked my interest enough that I had to track some down. Well let me tell you, it’s not all hype. I thought I had found my favorite cigars already for 2010 at this year’s trade show but this one has squeaked in at the last minute. The PDR 1878 Reserva Dominica Capa Oscura (try saying that five times fast) is an all Dominican cigar but doesn’t really smoke like one. Allow me to explain. There’s nothing like a well-constructed box-pressed cigar. Not sure if it’s the wave to tradition or the way the tobacco is experienced but either way- it’s special. Alec Bradley knows it too. That’s why the Prensado is such an exciting companion to their collection of cigars. Literally meaning “box-pressed" in Spanish, the Prensado’s inspiration springs from a rare Corojo 2006 wrapper grown in Trojes, Honduras, located right next to the Nicaraguan border. Hampton Roads Cigar Store to Host Charity Golf Tournament

Emerson’s Cigars is giving back. This September the five-location brick and mortar will be hosting a golf tournament at Cahoon Plantation Golf Course in Chesapeake, Virginia. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Montecristo Relief Organization. This charity was formed by cigar group Altadis USA, maker of some of the world’s most popular cigar brands like Montecristo , Romeo and Julieta, Trinidad, Por Larranaga, and more. Donations from their collected funds benefit disaster stricken causes. They immediately provided $25,000 to the Haiti Relief Fund after tragedy struck earlier this year. Also, reaching their goal of their flagship effort, the Montecristo Relief Fund was able to raise over a million dollars for the American Red Cross to allot to victims of Hurricane Katrina. This year, the 3rd Annual Montecristo Golf Tournament at Cahoon Plantation will be held Tuesday, September 14th, beginning with a 1pm shotgun scramble. Kristoff- new size, same amazing cigars

This year as part of their Superstar Cigar Tour, Emerson’s Cigars hosted Glen Case of Kristoff at their brick and mortars. Recently, Kristoff introduced a new Corona size for their blends so I thought I’d review a couple of my favorites- The Kristoff Sumatra and the Kristoff Ligero Maduro. Kristoff Sumatra After the popularity of the Kristoff Series came the release of the newest line, the Kristoff Sumatra. Very indicative of an elite Cuban, this cigar has a beautiful, rich Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. The filler, like many others from the Kristoff line, is a combination of Cuban seed Dominican and Cuban seed Nicaraguan tobaccos. It's easy to taste the velvety, floral flavors meld nicely with the rich spice from that Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. The cigar still maintains a lovely smooth, sweet finish that makes the Kristoff Sumatra the definition of quality craftsmanship. Cigar Math 101: Cain + Nub = Cain Nub

When I first discovered these were coming out, I have to admit, I felt a smidge incompetent for not expecting it. After all, Cain- both the Maduro and Habano blends- has done quite well. Not bad for Mr. Leccia, who is just, as he jousts himself, a “white boy from Pennsylvania.” However, Sam’s success was no accident. Amid the residual profits from a seemingly aggressive, albeit passionate and targeted marketing campaign, a very smart cigar emerged. Both the Maduro and the Habano were designed to be straight Ligero, a boast they proudly display on both the box for the Cain as well as the Cain Nub. The Cain is comprised of roughly 83% Ligero, which indeed commands a good deal of respect. For those of you who haven’t delved that deeply into the world that is the tobacco industry, or you just need a refresher (please keep your eyes peeled for my upcoming article on cigar terms), Ligero means taken from the top of the plant, where the leaves are soaking up the most sun. As someone who works in the cigar industry, it takes a lot to get me excited about a cigar. I’m used to sales reps hyping up the “latest and greatest” from whichever brand they happen to be representing. It’s their job, I get it, but it’s made me very skeptical. So, you can imagine how thrilled I was to discover that one company always delivers the goods. That company is Davidoff and their newest line, Puro D’Oro, did NOT disappoint. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t already partial to Davidoff. I don’t think I’ve experienced many cigars smoother than the Davidoff Thousands series that offer such an amazing caliber flavor profile.
