What about file-sharing?

What is File-Sharing?

The term file-sharing refers to the sharing of computer data or space on a network. File-sharing allows multiple users to access the same file, giving the user the ability to read, modify, copy and/or print it.
What is "Peer-to-peer Networking"

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology enables the sharing of computer resources such as files by a direct exchange between end-users' computers. P2P networking means files are not stored on a central server. Instead, client software (such as the popular Kazaa) works as a server for shared files on an individual's computer. This allows each computer with the software to act as a mini-server from which other P2P users can download files. P2P's popularity stems from its easy-to-use, convenient setup that has empowered informal networks of file sharers to make files available to each other around the globe.
What are MP3's?

MP3 is the short form for MPEG3, which stands for "Motion Picture Experts Group, Audio Layer 3". The MP3 format produces CD-quality sound in a highly compressed file. The technology creates sound files a tenth the size of standard CD music files with very little loss of sound quality. **End Summary** Topics: legal law download downloading movies games
About the Author:
Articles about laws and downloading services on my website! - http://friendlycream.com

Downloading on the Rise!

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has just released their annual commercial piracy report, claiming that one third of CDs worldwide are pirated. The report itself is a fascinating piece of positioning, because the group wants to maintain two positions that are in tension with each other: 1) piracy is a horrible problem of epidemic proportions that threatens the world economy and 2) the recording industry's efforts against piracy are having an impact.

So the report's headline trumpets the "one in three CDs is pirated claim," but further down in the report summary you find a mix of good news and bad news statistics like this:

COMMERCIAL MUSIC PIRACY REPORT 2005: KEY FIGURES

 * Music disc piracy rose 2% to 1.2 billion discs in 2004, the lowest level of growth in five years but nearly twice the number of pirated discs in 2000
 * Anti-piracy enforcement efforts helped in the de-commissioning of 87 CD production lines (up from 68 in 2003) and the seizure of 28,350 CD burners, double the level of 2003
 * Sales of all pirate recordings fell slightly to 1. **End Summary** Topics: legal law download downloading movies games files
About the Author:
Articles about laws and downloading services on my website! - http://friendlycream.com

Downloading in Canada!

Downloading copyrighted music from peer-to-peer networks is legal in Canada, although uploading files is not, Canadian copyright regulators said in a ruling released Friday.

In the same decision, the Copyright Board of Canada imposed a government fee of as much as $25 on iPod-like MP3 players, putting the devices in the same category as audio tapes and blank CDs. The money collected from levies on "recording mediums" goes into a fund to pay musicians and songwriters for revenues lost from consumers' personal copying. Manufacturers are responsible for paying the fees and often pass the cost on to consumers.

The peer-to-peer component of the decision was prompted by questions from consumer and entertainment groups about ambiguous elements of Canadian law. Previously, most analysts had said uploading was illegal but that downloading for personal use might be allowed.

"As far as computer hard drives are concerned, we say that for the time being, it is still legal," said Claude Majeau, secretary general of the Copyright Board.

The decision is likely to ruffle feathers on many sides, from consumer-electronics sellers worried about declining sales to international entertainment companies worried about the spread of peer-to-peer networks. **End Summary** Topics: legal download downloading movies games law
About the Author:
Articles about laws and downloading services on my website! - http://friendlycream.com
