Mysteries of the Medicine Cabinet-How and when to properly dispose of old medication

Medicine cabinets tend to bring out the packrat in most of us. Once we"ve gone to the trouble and expense of a doctor"s appointment or a trip to the pharmacy, we find it hard to part with anything remaining in the bottle when we feel better.

Is there anything wrong with keeping those three Hydrocodone tablets left over from your root canal last year? How about the cough syrup your daughter"s pediatrician prescribed this winter? Even if you don"t need it, how should you dispose of it? Dealing with it seems like so much trouble, we"d rather just close the door and forget it.

Location, Location, Location

Real estate isn"t the only business where location matters. Whether you"re dealing with prescription or over-the-counter medication, storage location is important. According to Heidi Kallivayalil, PharmD., Ambulatory and In-Hospital Practitioner, one of the worst places to store medications is the bathroom medicine cabinet. The steam and humidity from the sink and shower produce moisture that can seep in and cause drugs to degrade.

Unless special storage instructions are given, medications should be kept in a cool, dry place. **End Summary** Topics: mysteries of the medicine cabinet medicine cabinet health news health articles medical prescriptions
About the Author:
Medicine Cabinets tend to bring out the packrat in most of us.

Committing to healthy eating habits can be a challenge. You have to pay particular attention to how you shop for groceries, which products and ingredients you buy and the exact recipes you prepare. But eating healthy at home is only half the battle. When you commit to a healthy eating lifestyle, restaurants, family gatherings and travel can seem like obstacles in your path to being well fed and nutritionally fit.

What are some good choices you can make when dining out? How can you turn a family feast from a decadent overindulgence to a guiltless delight? Whether it"s a family vacation or business travel, what can you do that will keep you on task with the commitment to eat healthy?

Let"s start by reviewing the basics. Jillian McMullen, a registered and licensed dietician in Northeast Florida, provides a brief overview of ideal daily caloric intake. "While individual needs may vary, for weight loss I generally recommend a daily intake of 1200 to 1500 calories," McMullen says. "That daily amount should include 40 to 45 grams of fat, 130 to 180 grams of carbohydrates and 60 to 75 grams of protein. **End Summary** Topics: healthy eating eat healthy when away from home jillian mcmullen health articles health food
About the Author:
Healthy Eating When Away From Home- This health article by Jillian McMullen of Health Source Magazine explains how when on the road or on the run, these eating tips will keep you healthy and fit when you"re away from home.
Boost Brain Power With These Brain

When it comes to food, you have a wealth of delicious choices. And each one not only tastes good but also supplies unique health benefits. From blueberries to dark chocolate, leading nutritionists and physicians are pointing to certain foods that enhance brain power and, they say, a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Although there"s no conclusive research about the healthful brain benefits of particular supplements, food sources rich in vitamin E and Omega 3 fatty acids may provide benefit, says Jillian McMullen, R.D., LD/N, Outpatient Clinical Dietician with Mayo Clinic.

Vitamin E-rich foods include vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables, and whole grains. Omega 3-rich foods include fish, walnuts and flax seeds.

"We also know that adequate amounts of B vitamins are essential for brain function," says McMullen. "Some studies suggest a protective role of vitamins B9 (folic acid) and B12, but more research is needed before we can recommend these supplements. It doesn"t hurt to eat foods rich in folic acid such as green, leafy vegetables, fortified breads and cereals, and dried beans, as well as those chocked full of vitamin B12 like fish, meat, eggs, cheese and chicken. **End Summary** Topics: Health articles healthy living resource center health article directory jacksonville florida business directory Florida Jacksonvile Physicians P
About the Author:
Boost Brain Power With These Brain Super Foods -This health article written by Jillian McMullen of Health Source Magazine gives you the knowledge you need to stay healthy and tells you the top 10 foods that make you smarter...and healthier.
