Gadolinium is a naturally occurring rare-earth metal. This metal has a few properties that are appealing to both the scientific and medical communities. Yasmin Birth Control Pills

Yasmin is a type of birth control pill marketed and manufactured by the German company Bayer Schering Pharma AG. Yasmin first entered the American market in 2001 and has generated close to 500 million in sales to date. Yasmin is an oral contraceptive and is a synthetic spironolactone analogue known in the medical world as drospirenone. Drospirenone binds to the progesterone receptor, the resulting complex becomes activated and binds to specific sites on DNA. This leads to an increased difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus and implantation. When the Yasmin TV advertizing started the FDA took issue with the television commercials which featured women discussing the benefits of the product. Denture Cream and Zinc Toxicity, a Sticky Situation.

Denture cream products have been on the market for over 30 years and have offered denture wearers the benefit of not losing their grip or dentures while eating. Denture cream products have long been made with zinc and it is this ingredient that has been looked at in the medical community. Denture creams were first classified by the FDA as a “Class 1 medical device” and were considered a low risk item that did not need any labeling requirements. Denture creams also come with no warning stickers for side effects. It was the FDA’s decision many years ago to not have warning labels and perhaps this issue needs be revisited. Avandia Side Effects, Heart Attack Risks

Many of us suffer from type 2 diabetes. In fact there are about 14 million people in the United States who are in this situation and a good number are being treated with Avandia, a medicine designed to increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin. The drug was first marketed in 1999 by GlaxoSmithKline and it became so popular among physicians that more than 60 million prescriptions have been written. Avandia, also know as rosiglitazone, is an oral anti-diabetic agent that also improves glycemic control and reduces circulating insulin levels for those who have Type 2 diabetes and are not insulin-dependent. Avandia is sometimes prescribed with other medicines but is not used for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. Diabetes sufferers should know the signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and how to recognize them, including hunger, headache, confusion, irritability, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, tremors, sweating, fast heartbeat, seizure (convulsions), fainting, or coma (severe hypoglycemia can be fatal). Modern medicine has become remarkably adept at treating a variety of shoulder, knee and hip injuries through arthroscopic surgery that repairs injuries that used to keep people, particularly athletes, on the shelf for months or years. Now, it’s not uncommon to see a professional athlete recover in a matter of weeks from these injuries and such operations are becoming more and more commonplace even down to high school athletes. However, there is still no getting around the pain the follows such surgery and heavy doses of serious narcotics such as codeine and morphine may be necessary during the recovery process. While these drugs can be taken orally, another medical advance, the shoulder pain pump, is frequently used to pump pain medication directly into the shoulder through a catheter and provide more direct and effective relief.
