How to Make a Claim Following a Needle Stick Injury Suffered in the Workplace

It is a well known fact that healthcare workers are most at risk of needle-stick injuries in the workplace. Healthcare workers do not only include clinical staff (i.e. doctors and nurses etc.), but non-clinical ancillary staff such as receptionists and ward clerks who may have social contact with patients. However, these are not the only group of workers that are vulnerable and needle-stick injuries also occur in other areas of work such as the police force and amongst youth workers, who are all constantly at risk.

The injury itself suffered is not of course the important aspect for accident victims. It is the psychological impact of having to wait for HIV and related tests to be carried out to determine if any infection has been acquired. Many victims suffer depression and extremely low moods during the testing phase and these are issues which generally may need medical attention.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, the main risk posed by needle-stick injury to workers is when the worker is exposed to blood-borne viruses ("BBV"). Whilst there are certain protective vaccines available, not all types of BBVs can be protected against. **End Summary** Topics: needlestick syringe injury needlestick injuries
About the Author:
If you have been injured in this way then you may be entitled to make a needlestick injury compensation claim Specialist solicitors will be able to advise you on whether your employer should be held accountable for your injuries.

Whiplash Compensation Claims in the UK

According to an online article by the BBC ("Warning over whiplash epidemic"), the Association of British Insurers say that its members receive almost 1,200 whiplash claims every day, worth almost a staggering £2bn a year. This is an increase of approximately 25% over the past 5 years. Apparently, these types of injuries are a huge burden on NHS resources and costing them almost £8m a year.

The AA has suggested that these drivers could reduce the risk of whiplash injuries by ensuring that the head restraints in their cars are adjusted to the appropriate height. In fact, the top of the head restraint should be almost level with the top of the driver's head, but very few drivers or passengers make these adjustments before setting off on their journey.

There are many other ways in which whiplash injuries can be avoided and the most obvious way is to keep a safe distance from the car in front and to brake 'early' and 'lightly'. Very few drivers are aware that you must keep at least 2 seconds from the vehicle ahead. **End Summary** Topics: whiplash neck injury whiplash compensation back injury
About the Author:
It is a well known fact that many of these whiplash claims are often fraudulent and many claimants exaggerate their injuries to obtain maximum compensation.
Road Traffic Accident Scams

The increasing number of traffic accident scams in the UK is becoming a cause for concern for many road users. In fact, it is costing the insurance industry around £200 million a year and causing an unnecessary increase in car insurance premiums. More importantly, it is putting the lives of innocent motorists at risk!

Organised traffic scams often involve criminals deliberately staging road traffic accidents so that innocent motorists have no chance of avoiding a collision. There are numerous gangs out there who operate to set up traffic accidents and then make personal injury claims to benefit from large cash payouts. These gangs will stage accidents with vulnerable motorists by deliberating creating a situation that will encourage a road traffic accident.

A classic example of a commonly used road traffic accident scam is when you are attempting to merge into a flow of traffic, and the driver behind gives you a hand signal to enter his lane. As soon as you have entered the lane in front of him, he accelerates and bumps into the back of your car. **End Summary** Topics: road accidents road accident scams whiplash compensation
About the Author:
However, if you are unfortunate enough to become a victim of an accident scam , it is essential to obtain as many details as possible and get photographs of the scene of the accident. It may be difficult to find an independent witness but it is vital you inform your insurance company and the police of any suspicions.

Accidents Involving Foreign Truck Drivers in the UK

Over the past year, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of accidents involving foreign lorry drivers on the roads and motorways in the UK. In fact, according to statistics by Accident Exchange (traffic specialists), the number of accidents involving foreign lorry drivers have increased by almost 10% in the past twelve months. According to an online article by the Telegraph, lorries registered abroad are involved in around 9,000 accidents a year, and the Association of British Insurers says that foreign lorry drivers are three times more likely to be involved in collisions than UK lorry drivers.

However, the Road Haulage Association states that lorry drivers are not only to blame for the increase in accidents and that many motorists simply do not understand the 'blind spot hazard' of foreign lorries, which are mostly left-hand-drive. This is no excuse for lorry drivers not to be more vigilant on the roads, and especially foreign lorry drivers who should certainly drive with more care and attention and be more assertive whilst overtaking! **End Summary** Topics: foreign truck drivers foreign drivers accidents uk
About the Author:
If the foreign driver is uninsured or drives off without stopping, this does not necessarily mean that you will receive no compensation.
Is the New UK Motorcycle Test 2009 Causing Safety Issues For Motorcycle and Moped Riders?

The new DSA Motorcycle Test 2009 has recently been under public scrutiny due to the number of crashes within the first few weeks of its use. The aim of the test was to improve the standard of road safety for motorcycle riders and ultimately all road users. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) said that the new test was essential to help reduce the number of deaths of motorcyclists in the UK. However, within the first few weeks since the test was brought in (end of April 2009), there were approximately 15 incidents within the test centres, and one of the learners actually ended up with broken bones!

The instructors blame the new "swerve test" where learners have to reach a speed of approximately 30mph and then perform a swerve on special tracks. Many instructors say that this is extremely dangerous, particularly in wet weather conditions. Jeff Stone from the British Motorcyclists Federation told the BBC that "a brake and swerve manoeuvre on a wet road is fraught with danger for even an experienced motorcyclists". It is therefore difficult to understand why the DSA are putting such inexperienced learners at an unnecessary risk? **End Summary** Topics: moped accident motorcycle accidents 2009 motorcycle test
About the Author:
If you have been hurt or seriously injured motorcycle accident it is important to seek professional advice from specialist solicitors who will ensure that you obtain the maximum compensation for your injuries.

CYCLING ACCIDENTS AND SAFETY IN THE UK

It is a well known fact that not only is cycling good for your health, but it is good for the environment too. However, whilst it certainly has a positive impact on the environment, some people may argue that the health claim is debatable!

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents ("RoSPA"), over 16,000 cyclists are killed or injured in reported road accidents in the UK each year. Over 2,500 of those are either killed or seriously injured. It is important to note that there are thousands of unreported incidents each year, and the RoSPA have suggested that there are over 150,000 accidents that occur off-road each year.

Around 25% of the cyclists killed and injured are young children and apparently males are much more likely to be involved in cycling accidents than females. In fact, the RoSPA have suggested that four out of five cycle casualties are in fact male. However, majority of cycling accidents occur during the daytime, and in particular during peak-time traffic (i.e. around 8:30am and 5:00pm), when most people start and finish work. **End Summary** Topics: cycling cycling accidents cycle accident claims
About the Author:
If you have been hurt or seriously injured in a cycling accident it is important to seek professional advice from specialist solicitors who will ensure that you obtain the maximum compensation for your injuries.

Health Service Negligence Cases - When Does a Complaint Become a Legal Compensation Claim?

When dealing with Medical Negligence cases (also known as Clinical Negligence), it is extremely important to distinguish between a Claim against the NHS and a Complaint. Whilst majority of operations and treatments go according to plan, there are often times where things do occasionally go wrong. However, this does not necessarily mean you have a claim for Medical Negligence and in order for a claim to be viable, you must show that you have suffered personal injury or harm following a medical procedure or as a direct result of wrongful advice given by a medical professional within an NHS organisation.

A few years ago, the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee condemned the way in which Medical Negligence incidents were dealt with in the NHS:

QUOTE: According to the Department of Health, one in every 10 patients admitted to NHS hospitals is unintentionally harmed. These statistics would be terrifying enough without our learning that there is undoubtedly substantial under-reporting of serious incidents and deaths.

This is rather shocking, especially after many of us believe that the general standard of healthcare in the UK is considered to be very high in comparison with other European and foreign countries. **End Summary** Topics: medical malpractice medical negligence nhs complaints
About the Author:
If you have suffered personal injury or harm then you may well be entitled to make a Medical Negligence compensation claim against the NHS.
MIB Claims - Uninsured and Untraced Drivers

The Motor Insurance Bureau ("MIB") is a non-profitable organization which was established in 1946 to compensate victims of uninsured and untraced motorists. Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, all Insurance companies are obliged to be members of the MIB and contribute to its funding each year by means of a levy. There is one office in England based in Milton Keynes and the MIB employs almost 320 employees who deal with uninsured and untraced motorist claims all over the Country.

It is a legal requirement for motorists to stop at the scene of an accident and to exchange insurance details with each party involved. However, whilst the majority of motorists do stop, there is still a large number who don't and drive away at the scene. This is most commonly known as a "hit and run" accident. It can be very dangerous and not advisable to drive after a vehicle which has driven off at the scene, and it is more than likely that either the vehicle will have no insurance, or the driver will be uninsured. **End Summary** Topics: automotive vehicle mid calims uninsured untraced
About the Author:
If you have been hurt or seriously injured as a result of an uninsured and untraced motorist, it is important to seek professional advice from MIB specialist solicitors who will ensure that you obtain the maximum compensation for your injuries.

Driver Safety - Mobile Phone Usage Whilst Driving

Driving is an extremely dangerous activity and requires our full focus and attention at all times. A single driver error could potentially lead to a catastrophe and loss of lives! Whilst many motorists think they have full control of their vehicle whilst talking on a mobile phone, research suggests that using a mobile phone whilst driving significantly increases the risk of causing a road traffic accident.

Over three quarters of the UK population are mobile phone users, and subsequently there has been a dramatic increase in the number of motorists who use a mobile phone whilst driving. According to research by the Department for Transport, the reaction times for drivers using a mobile phone are 30% worse than for driving under the influence of alcohol at the legal limit. In fact, you are four times more likely to crash when using a mobile phone whilst driving.

Majority of motorists are aware that usage whilst driving is illegal and those drivers who commit this offense will be prosecuted. **End Summary** Topics: mobile phone driving car vehicle legal
About the Author:
If you have been involved in a road traffic accident which was not your fault and was caused by a motorist who was using his/her mobile phone whilst driving, you may be entitled to claim compensation for your injuries.

According to a survey of 1,000 drivers carried out by "Brake" (the road safety charity), 50% of drivers admit to drink driving and 25% of drivers admit to driving after drinking an amount of alcohol which they clearly know is affecting their driving.

The current legal alcohol limit for driving is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. However, it is a well known fact that there is no foolproof way of consuming alcohol and staying within the legal limit. Each individual's tolerance to alcohol is dependant upon several factors including their weight, gender, age and the amount of alcohol consumed etc. There is simply no way of knowing how much an individual can drink and still drive safely and stay within the legal limit.

Many motorists are simply unaware that any alcohol, even a small drink, will impair their driving ability. Each individual's tolerance to alcohol is dependant upon the above factors and subsequently it is impossible to calculate how much alcohol you have in your blood, even if you are aware of the exact amount you have consumed. The alcohol content of each alcoholic drink (i.e. **End Summary** Topics: drinking and driving alchohol under the influence
About the Author:
If you have been involved in a road traffic accident which was not your fault and was caused by a motorist who was under the influence of alcohol, you may be entitled to claim compensation for your injuries.
