Plan an overnight trip and experience the splendor and beauty of these unique religious institutions. Come explore their significance to Morristown's history, and learn about key historical figures that are buried in two of the church cemeteries.

Historic Churches of Morristown

St. Peter's Episcopal Church,
South Street at Miller Road
St. Peter's Episcopal Church was founded on January 1, 1827. Services were first held in George Macculloch's home. Within a year, the congregation built a place of worship that was used until the late nineteenth century when the current larger structure was begun. The construction of the McKim, Mead and White design took 24 years to complete because the church specified that no stone would be put in place until it was paid for. Between the church and the parish house are two cemeteries. Many well-known Morristown residents are buried there, including George and Louisa Macculloch, and members of the Ford, Miller, Vail, Ogden, Wood, and Foote families.

The South Street Presbyterian Church,
65 South Street
The South Street Presbyterian Church was formed in 1840 after the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church on the Green was divided by internal strife. **End Summary** Topics: morristown new jersey nj historic visitor visit
About the Author:
Carol Barkin is the research and product development coordinator for the Morris County Tourism Bureau as well as a tour docent for the Bureau's Summer and Fall walking tour programs.
Morris County, New Jersey sits squarely within "The Crossroads of the American Revolution National and State Heritage Area". The National Park Service recognized the importance of NJ's pivotal role in the founding of our democracy and as an important battleground state during the American Revolution, with its 2006 designation. There are sites of historic importance in each of Morris County's 39 municipalities. Here is a sampling of five places to visit that will excite and educate visitors and provide them with an authentic feel for how life evolved in one of America's original colonies over the course of three centuries:

1. Morristown Historical National Park
Established in 1933 as the nation's first "National Historical Park," history truly comes to life here in Morristown. The park consists of four non contiguous units, Jockey Hollow, Fort Nonsense, The New Jersey Brigade/Cross Estate and Gardens and the newly renovated Ford Museum and Mansion, which served as George Washington's military headquarters for 200 days during the harsh winter of 1779-1780 where snow was as deep as six feet. Troops of more than 10,000 were lodged in Jockey Hollow. **End Summary** Topics: morristown new jersey new jersey tourism
About the Author:
Carol Barkin is the research and product development coordinator for the Morris County Tourism Bureau as well as a tour docent for the Bureau's Summer and Fall walking tour programs.
