Herbal Medicine: Ginseng Uses and History

Prized more than gold for thousands of years, Ginseng root has been Asia's most revered “tonic” and most effective herbal medicine. It is viewed as an aphrodisiac that strengthens the body, enhances health and aids in longevity. Early Jesuit missionaries in Canada discovered American Ginseng in 1704 and made a fortune shipping it to China. For years it was America’s most valuable export until over collection just about wiped it out. Today it is grown in Wisconsin and most of the crop is shipped to Asia.

Until recently most scientists scoffed at the ginseng claims. But research is mounting that shows it helps the body resist illness and damage from stress. Studies show that it stimulates the immune system, helps reduce cholesterol buildup, protect the liver from toxic substances and increases stamina and nutrient absorption from the intestines. Asian athletes use it to boost their performances.

The Chinese for years said it enlightened the mind, increasing wisdom. Continuous use leads to longevity. Recent studies have said that ginseng prevents heart disease, blood coagulation, and protects cells from radiation damage. They are continually studying ginseng to find more positive results for its use. **End Summary** Topics: herbal medicine
About the Author:
Kevin Smalley is an herb enthusiast and expert.
ITALIAN HERB GARDEN

Growing your own herbs in an Italian Herb Garden provides a huge amount of possibilities. It cultivates interesting culinary ideas and leads the way to creative cookery. They can improve bland recipes for people on restricted diets. Oregano, for example can replace salt, and sweet cicely can replace sugar if restricted diets are required.

These five common Italian herbs will add color to your summer garden and zest to your cooking.

Basil – is the herb of love and is favored by many. Its sweet flavor and aroma gives it infinite uses, whether for main meals or desserts. Basil is probably best known for its uses with tomatoes. It can be sprinkled over sliced tomatoes with an oil and vinegar salad dressing, or used to make homemade tomato or spaghetti sauce.

Bay Leaves – are very spicy and pungent. Usually they are used when cooking meats. Because of their strong flavor only one-half to one leaf is needed for a medium-sized stew.

Oregano – is probably the most famous American herb. Its fame is primarily due to pizza pies. Oregano is also known for its use in spaghetti sauce. **End Summary** Topics: italian herb garden
About the Author:
Kevin J.
Classifications of Herbs

Herbs have been companions of man for many,

many centuries. You have seen the many uses to

which herbs can be put, accompanying and serving

man through his life.

Herb garden plants thrive not only outside in the

garden, but year after year they reveal their

undefinable ability to grow to one’s heart. The variety

of fragrances, the display of brilliant colors, the pride

of their majestic growth, the surrounding liveliness of

humming insects, all these imponderables and more

make lasting impressions upon the soul of the

observant grower.

Herbs are classified as tender annuals (like basil,

marjoram, borage, nasturtium), as Hardy annuals

(like chamomile, heart’s ease), as Biennials (like

clary sage, angelica, mullein), as Tender Perennials

(like rosemary, curry plant) and as Hardy Perennials

(like lavender, sage, hyssop, chives).

The annuals have to be seeded each year unless

conditions are favorable enough in the garden to

have these annuals seed themselves. The biennials

also should be seeded each year so that, for

example, a mullein will be in flower each year. These

plants form leaves only the first year and flower the

following year. **End Summary** Topics: herb garden plants herb gardening
About the Author:
Kevin J.
The Many Uses of Herbs

Herbs have been known for its many uses since ancient times. They are generally used for cooking (chefs would use them to decorate in plates or for garnishing), for its medicinal purposes and even for pest control. There are a lot of ways where one can grow an herb garden. It can be indoor or at some area outside the garden. But just like any other plants, herbs grow as annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. In growing your herbs, you will need a well-drained soil for it to grow perfectly. Herbs often don't need fertilizers. Herbs can grow well in a sunny location although some prefer full shade.

Herbs can be grown into a home garden or they can also be grown from seeds. If you choose to grow them from seeds, it is best to put them in a shallow pot or box in the late winter. Proper use of light can also be a big factor in growing your herbs. Make sure not to cover the whole seed with soil as herbs don't have a deep root base. **End Summary** Topics: growing herbs herb gardening
About the Author:
Author's Bio:
