Stress Management Programs: 5 Reasons Why They Don't Work

Stress management programs are so fashionable these days that Trade Unions are even negotiating them into their labor contracts as happened recently for Bay Area Rapid Transit workers in San Francisco. But do they work? Mostly they don't work very well, especially long term, and here are some reasons why.

1. Information alone does not produce change.

Many stress management programs are packed with valuable information and lists of things to do to combat stress. But after hearing about it most people go home to their lives and do the same things they've always done. Change has to come from the inside out. Not the outside in.

2. One size does not fit all

Programs that are designed for work groups are usually based on research of what things help combat stress and what causes stress. Even so called "father" of stress management Hans Selye, had difficulty defining stress. Why? Becuase stress is different for different people. What may cause one person stress might cause another to laugh.

3. The fish smells from the head down.

In organizations with a high stress culture, it usually comes from the top. **End Summary** Topics: stress management programs stress stress in the workplace
About the Author:
Michael Lee is the author of "Turn Stress Into Bliss" and the founder of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy .
Yoga For Stress - What Kind Works Best?

Ever hear someone offering advice to people who admit to feeling stressed. More often than not you'll hear them say "You should do yoga!"

Most of us know that yoga is good for stress, right? But there are a couple of catches. If someone is stressed how can they find the time to do yoga? And if they do manage to find the time, how can they do yoga in a way that doesn't stress them out even further.

I've seen many stressed out Type A's over the years grunting and groaning their way through an asana sequence as they make every effort to get each posture just right and get their head at least as close to their toes as that big guy on the mat next to them.

It's likely that this kind of approach to yoga might create more stress than it relieves. But first things first - how to find the time.

Here, you just have to bite the bullet and make an initial commitment for one class per week to start with. Hey, it's only an hour and it might help save your life down the road so just do it. **End Summary** Topics: yoga for stress stress relief yoga stress stress management yoga therapy
About the Author:
Michael Lee is the author of Turn Stress Into Bliss and the founder of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy .
