How to Grow Beautiful Bird of Paradise Plants in Your Garden

Strelitzia, or Bird of Paradise, is a beautiful tropical looking plant with extremely showy flowers which indeed do look a bit like birds. It can be grown outdoors in areas that do not get more than a very light frost, meaning USDA zones 9 to 11 in the United States. Streletzia is native to parts of South Africa, where it enjoys a mild climate and year round precipitation. Bird of Paradise is a striking and easy to grow plant, making it a favorite of landscapers especially in Southern California. The only real criticism may be that Streletzia is over used because is so attractive and dependable.

Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, most notably including Strelitzia nicolai and Strelitzia reginae. Strelitzia reginae is also known as Bird of Paradise, and has showy flowers of orange and blue. Strelitzia reginae is normally 2 to 3 feet in height, but can reach heights of up to 6 feet. Strelitzia nicolai is also known as the Giant Bird of Paradise and has large showy flowers which are white and blue-black. Strelitzia nicolai is normally about 6 to 10 feet tall, but can reach heights of up to 20 feet. **End Summary** Topics: Strelitzia Bird of Paradise giant Bird of Paradise
About the Author:
Check out my resources for all things gardening at http://www.GardeningWithLarry.com with listings of local garden centers and specialty mail order nurseries.

Water Conservation Tips for the Yard and Garden

One of the biggest water wasters in the average yard is the grass lawn. If you live in a drought prone area consider eliminating or reducing the size of your lawn. Grassy areas can be replaced with water conserving plants, gravel, or even artificial turf. Areas that are kept as grass lawns may be made more water efficient by simply letting the grass grow a bit longer. Grass cut short is very water intensive, while longer grass is generally much healthier. Grass in shadier areas will usually use less water than grass in full sun. If you decide to eliminate some of your lawn you may get the best savings by eliminating the sunniest sections. Finally, some varieties of grass need far less irrigation than others to stay green. If you do keep a large lawn consider researching varieties that are best for conservation in your area and switch to one of those.

For plants in non lawn areas look at "water wise" choices for your area. Most garden centers will have a section devoted to these plants. They may have experts on staff or even classes. **End Summary** Topics: water conservation water conservation gardening
About the Author:
Check out my resources for gardening at http://www.GardeningWithLarry.com with listings of local garden centers and specialty mail order nurseries.

How to Dig up Your Lawn and Replace it With Water Wise Plants

This past weekend I finally finished digging out all of the grass that was my front lawn. I replaced the grass with water conserving plants. My yard is in San Diego, California, and so some of what I recently experienced in doing this is specific to Southern California. However, I also did this about fifteen years ago in Connecticut, so this article should apply to anyone who wants to be rid of their lawn.

The first step in replacing your lawn is to remove the grass. This is by far the hardest and least glamorous part of the project. There are a few ways to go about this. You can spray something like Roundup to kill your grass. You can take a rototiller to your lawn. You can dig your lawn up bit by bit with a shovel.

You can spray something like Roundup on your lawn and wait for it to completely die. I'm not sure how many treatments this would take, but I think it would take a while. Still, you might avoid a lot of digging this way. I did not kill my lawn with Roundup. **End Summary** Topics: remove your lawn kill your grass water wise plants
About the Author:
Check out my resources for gardening at GardeningWithLarry.com with listings of local garden centers and specialty mail order nurseries.

Great Names for Dogs and Puppies from Foods

Some of the best dog names come from foods of all kinds, including meats, cheeses, and sweets. These are even better as a dogs name if the dog either especially enjoys the food or is the color of the food.

Dogs love meat, and there are number of meat inspired names for dogs. Tbone and Ribeye are both cuts of beef, and Porkchop is a cut of pork. Meatball and burger are foods normally made with beef. Different Sausages including Hotdog, Schnitzel, and Wiener are great names.

Dogs also love Cheese, and so Cheese and Fromage (which is French for Cheese) are fun choices. More Cheese inspired names are Gouda, Cheddar (especially for a yellow dog), Feta, and Brie (which is best for a female dog).

Some nuts have fun names, and so can be used. Consider Almond (best for a small dog), Cashew, Macadamia (with a nickname of Mac), Pistachio (with a nickname of ... um ... tach), Peanut (best for a small dog), and to go with those nuts Jelly.

Most dogs love fruit, and so think about Banana (best for a goofball, or a yellow dog, or one who is both) and Peaches (best for a female). **End Summary** Topics: dog names dog names from foods
About the Author:
Read more about Dog Names from Food at www.PetNum.com.

I've been compiling a list of names for big and small dogs and puppies on my Pet Numerology website for some time now. There are a number of inspiring sources for big and small doggie names including things that are big or small and synonyms for the words big and small.

Large animals are a good source of names for big dogs. Bear and Moose are big hairy mammals, and so are good names for a hairy dog. Mammoths were huge furry elephant like animals millions of years ago, and so also good names for a big hairy dog. Dino, which is sort for dinosaur, fits any big dog. From cryptozoology are the names Sasquatch and Monster, with Sasquatch being another good choice for a furry dog.

Large things are also good inspiration for big dog names. Mountain, from geography, is a good choice - especially for a plumper dog. Sumo, as in the heavy Japanese Sumo Wrestlers, is another good choice for a large and plump dog.

Mythology is a fantastic source of names. From Greek mythology there are Titan and Hercules, with Hercules being especially good for a strong dog. Goliath was a legendary gigantic Philistine warrior. **End Summary** Topics: big dog names small dog names
About the Author:
Read more about Names for Small Dogs and Names for Big Dogs at www.PetNum.com.

Great Naming Ideas for Orange Cats and Kittens

I've been compiling a list of names for orange cats and kittens on my Pet Numerology website for some time now. There are a number of inspiring sources for orange kitty names, including fire, orange foods, and sunny things.

There are many foods ranging from yellow to red that make fantastic names for orange cats.

Spices make excellent names for cats. Clove, Cumin and Nutmeg are good for cats with slightly darker coats. Curry is good for a more yellow cat, Ginger is perfect if more orange, and Cinnamon or Paprika if more red or for a very active cat.

Fruits can be used for names. Citrus is a good name for any hue, as there are a variety of citrus fruits, all of them in the yellow to red spectrum. Banana is good for a more yellow kitty, especially fitting if they are something of a goof ball. For an orange cat consider Mango, Pumpkin, or Tangerine - which are all very orange fruits. Tomato fits a very red cat.

For a sweet cat consider the name of something sweet. Butterscotch and Carmel are both sweet toppings in a soft orange color. **End Summary** Topics: orange cat names yellow cat names red cat names cat names
About the Author:
Read more about Names for Orange Cats at www.PetNum.com.
