SEO Training Workshop on Blogs at SES London 2009
One of the four SEM and SEO training workshops that will be held at SES London on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, will be focused on “Reaching Your Audience through Blogs.” The instructor is Jennifer Evans Laycock, the Editor-in-Chief of Search Engine Guide, an online publication aimed at educating Small Business owners about search engine marketing, viral marketing, social media marketing and blogging.

Microsoft Could Win Mobile Search With Verizon Deal
While Google may own the web search market, Microsoft’s announced deal with Verizon could put them at the top of the mobile search space. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced the partnership at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas yesterday.
With the purchase of Alltell expected to be completed soon, Verizon would have the largest market share of the mobile space in the United States.
“Under a five-year agreement, Microsoft Live Search will become the default search service on cellphones and smartphones running on the Verizon Wireless network. Verizon’s customers will still be able to access other search services through their mobile Web browsers,” the New York Times reported.
Though they can access other engines, just like the browser installed on a computer, most would likely use the default. Given the growing use of mobile devices in place of computer use this could be a major play by Microsoft in what could become the future of search.
MapQuest Incorporates Personalization Feature
MapQuest is bringing personalization into their online and mobile mapping offering. Dubbed My MapQuest, the feature lets users save routes and maps, giving them access later whenever they need it.
My MapQuest pages can be created through an AOL account or an OpenID account. You can set language and mileage preferences as well as store mobile numbers and addresses.
The feature will be rolled out to MQ4M (MapQuest for Mobile) for Blackberry soon. Initial Blackberry models will include AT&T BlackBerry Bold, Verizon BlackBerry 8830 and 8330, and T-Mobile BlackBerry 8300, 8800 and 8820.
“The launch of My MapQuest continues MapQuest’s commitment to innovation and improving the user’s experience. Our studies have shown that our customers want a personalization feature that includes the ability to save previously searched addresses,” said Christian Dwyer, Senior Vice President and GM, MapQuest. “Giving our users the ability to save not just maps but also their routes sets us apart and extends MapQuest’s commitment to offering users choice and flexibility.”

Microsoft Goes after the Verizon Default Search Deal
Microsoft is attempting to pull the rug out from under Google’s talks with Verizon to be the default search engine on its mobile phones. And they’re doing so by dishing out the dough.
It’s no secret that Microsoft has a bunch of cash on hand. They’ve been using some of it to create incentive programs like Cashback and SearchPerks to essentially pay people to search.
Now, it looks like they’re willing to shell out some green by offering Verizon a larger piece of the revenue-sharing pie than Google has thus far offered.
Could this be why Google was unwilling to spend moolah on a costly court battle defending its now-defunct search advertising deal with Yahoo? Both Google and Yahoo said they could have won the suit, but Google declined to pursue it.
Could this be why Steve Ballmer is saying he’s not interested in acquiring Yahoo anymore (depsite the blue light special)?
Mobile is hot and it’s only going to get hotter. Becoming the default search engine on the largest mobile carrier in the U.S. (Verizon recently won approval for their acquisition of Alltel) is prime real estate indeed.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin in Favor of Freeing Up White Space TV Spectrum
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is in favor of freeing up the “white spaces” in the tv spectrum between television stations. While concerns over interference have been made by some groups, testing has not shown that to be a problem. As Techdirt points out, the complications found in testing were from failed devices, not interference.
Martin is seeking a vote from the full commission on the matter as early as November 4th, which just so happens to be another important election day.

AOL Adds SmartBox (aka Query Suggestions) to iPhone Mobile Search
AOL is adding query suggestions to its mobile search for the iPhone and iPod touch. Dubbed SmartBox, it’s designed to aid searches on mobile phones since it is a pain to type on mobile phones. (Well, it is!)
Writing on the AOL search blog, Farhon Memon says, “By combining the functionality of query auto-complete and related searches all in one place, we’ve maximized the screen space of the iPhone and hopefully made AOL Mobile Search easier for you to use.”

Larry Page to Keynote White Spaces Advocacy Event in DC
Tomorrow, Google co-founder Larry Page will keynote the “Broadband for the Future Event” in Washington, DC. The event is designed to advocate for white spaces, something Google has been adamant about for a long time.
If you’re unaware, white spaces are a unused airwaves between TV stations. Google wants them to be used for free nationwide wireless. Opponents say that it will interfere with the television signals.

Omniture Launches Analytics-Driven Site Search
Web analytics provider Omniture today launched Omniture SiteSearch, a hosted site search product it picked up in its Visual Sciences acquisition, which closed in January 2008.
The SiteSearch product was an early entry in the software-as-a-service (SaaS) space. It was originally launched in 1999 as Atomz Search, part of its content management suite. Atomz was later acquired by analytics provider WebSideStory, which later acquired Visual Sciences. The entire company changed its name to Visual Sciences, and was then acquired by Omniture.
A few clients, including Verizon and BusinessWeek have been using SiteSearch as a standalone product, according to Jeff Minich, senior product marketing manager at Omniture. Today, it becomes an integrated part of the Omniture online marketing suite.
The biggest effect of this is the ability to impact site search results using data from Omniture’s SiteCatalyst analytics package. So on an e-commerce site, for example, a search for “shirts” could be made to return the most popular shirts of the season, or those that return the highest margin, or those that are converting highest, Minich said.
“You can set business rules to break ties, or to push a page higher in the results,” he said. “You can also combine metrics, and weight them relative to each other, and relative to the natural relevancy ranking in SiteSearch.”
AOL’s ADTECH to Provide Ad-Serving Capabilities for React2Media
AOL has announced that ADTECH will provide ad-serving capabilites for React2Media. R2M is a full service online advertising network. ADTECH’s ads will be served up on R2M’s network of 150 sites, including search portal QuikZilla as well as CookingTown.com.
“With the future of digital advertising unfolding, and TV and the Internet increasingly becoming indistinguishable, React2Media has been able to identify and surpass some of the greatest hurdles in the industry,” said Dirk Freytag, CEO of ADTECH. “Our goal in bringing ADTECH’s robust, scalable technology to React2Media is to help them further this impressive progress in the current advertising climate, as well as into the future.”
