For anyone following the Search Zeitgeist, this is a sad day. Google has just changed updates on Google Trends from hourly to daily.
The change is so new, Google hasn’t even updated its FAQ on Google Trends:
How does Hot Trends work?
Hot Trends reflects what people are searching for on Google today. Rather than showing the most popular searches overall, which would always be generic terms like “weather,” Hot Trends highlights searches that have sudden surges in popularity. Our algorithm analyzes millions of web searches performed on Google and displays those searches that deviate the most from their historic traffic pattern. The algorithm also filters out spam and removes inappropriate material.
For each search, Hot Trends shows related searches, a search-volume graph, and the top cities. We also display news, blog, and web results to help give context about why a search may be appearing on the Hot Trends list today. Hot Trends is updated hourly. You can also choose a date in the past to see what the top Hot Trends for that date were.
It’s a shame Google has made this decision. The company shares very little data about searches done on the search engine. Google Trends was the best way to keep abreast of what captured people’s imagination in more-or-less real-time.
We hope Google didn’t make this change due to our report on glitches in Google Trends or the appearance of spam more frequently in the Google Trends results.
We also hope Google returns Google Trends to an hourly basis before the service comes out of beta.

ad:tech San Francisco 2008 gets underway today and a whole slew of announcements are expected to be made at the event. (”Whole slew” is a journalistic term meaning more than I plan to cover.)
Among this morning’s announcements is one that will be of interest to search engine marketers: ABCSearch, a PPC search network, is partnering with AdWatcher, a third party service that helps small to mid-size businesses track and optimize their online advertising campaigns.
Through the partnership, advertisers in the ABCSearch network can receive extra, independent feedback on the quality and conversions of the traffic to their sites. Adwatcher will assist ABCSearch to monitor and boost traffic quality for advertisers on its network, improve campaign conversion rates and provide greater transparency.
In a social media press release, Daniel Yomtobian, president and CEO of ABCSearch, is quoted as saying, “Our intent with AdWatcher is to help our advertisers get a better picture of their campaigns and further improve their results on our network.”
It’s also worth noting that ABCSearch’s proprietary technology, ClickShield, identifies and removes suspicious PPC traffic across the network. ClickShield has been certified by ClickDefense, a leading tracking, optimization and click fraud detection company.
Last week, Andy Beal released an online reputation management tool called Trackur. It was created for “individuals and companies concerned that they may be the subject of an online conversation, but don’t have the time or knowledge needed to set up their own online monitoring tools.”
It’s also aimed at PR firms that want to add online reputation monitoring to their existing “clipping” services.” Users can be up and running with Trackur in just 5 minutes, which Beal says “removes the hassle out of maintaining dozens of manual reputation searches.”
At first glance, Trackur appears to be a simple RSS aggregator of social media search queries. Indeed, a social media-savvy individual could likely replicate what Trackur does with a bit of time and effort. But not every business has the knowledge, or the desire, to know what they should be tracking. Trackur makes good business sense for those types of users, Beal says.
“We take the hard work out of monitoring social media. We monitor news, blog posts, images, videos – even Twitter! Users can set up multiple searches, use sophisticated filtering to remove items that are not relevant to them, bookmark items, share items, sort items, then subscribe by email or RSS – or just use our beautiful AJAX interface,” Beal says.
All of this sophistication comes at a price. Trackur offers plans from $88-$388 a month, or less than the cost of a venti latte at Starbucks a day. But for small businesses, Trackur is essentially reputation insurance. “A smear against the reputation of a small business can be more detrimental than one against a Fortune 500 firm. Small businesses live and die by referrals and word of mouth. Just a single blog post can hurt the business of a restaurant, attorney, or flower shop,“ says Beal.
Technology alone cannot manage a reputation, so a Google support group and consulting services are in place for those who need help acting on their results. Trackur offers a 14 day free trial of its Standard version so users can experiment with the tool before shelling out the monthly fee.
In the coming weeks, Beal says to expect new features such as trending reports to be rolled out with the tool.
