No, the two are not related, as far as I can tell. But Congratulations to Firefox (my personal browser of choice) for reaching 20% of market share. They reached the number for 2 out of 4 weeks in October. For a browser that doesn’t come pre-installed on most computers, that’s quite impressive.
The new privacy feature is included in a pre-release version of Firefox 3.1. It’s called “Private Browsing” and you can turn it on via the Tools tab. When you do, it won’t store data such as history, cookies, and cache. But it only prevents such storage for the browsing you do when the feature is turned on. To store that info again, just turn it off.
What Private Browsing does NOT do is keep you anonymous on websites or your ISP. It also is not a security tool to prevent spyware downloads and such.
A good use of the tool is if you’re looking online for Christmas gifts but you don’t want your husband to find out what you’re getting him! (Just make sure to take note of the things you want to remember.)

Read the news and it quickly becomes obvious how complex this world is. So, it’s no wonder that what’s popular in social media and electronics is simple.
MySpace (IMHO) was easier than Friendster. But Facebook took the best of both and now reigns.
LinkedIn makes it easy to network professionally, and YouTube makes it easy to be entertained - and quickly.
Twitter makes a bunch of things easy - from breaking news to gathering feedback about a product you’re considering.
In electronics, the Flip Video has revolutionized camcorders (I am a proud owner of one myself). And now, smaller, more affordable laptops are all the rage. Plus, Apple threw its iPod on a mobile phone, inserted the internet and simplified mobile communications.
So why are these services and gadgets so popular but companies like Microsoft are watching their market share slowly fade?
Dan Kimerling at TechCrunch thinks its all about motivation. Microsoft is motivated by features, while Facebook, et al, are motivated by the user experience.
He has a point. Microsoft considers Google a major rival, and Google is almost always talking about the user experience.
Steve Ballmer might want to take a cue, because he talks an awful lot about catching Google via advertising. And while advertising revenues are most certainly a key to Microsoft’s long term success, it will only prove profitable if the customer is happy.
Google should also watch out to avoid the pitfalls that plagued Microsoft. But a Google failure would not automatically equal Microsoft success. It would only leave the door open for a Facebook-esque startup to come along and steal the show.

Seems GoDaddy is having some problems with their just launched .me domains. People were applying left and right for them and obviously GoDaddy seemed to have a “box office” hit with the new domain extension.
But as SEW moderator Discovery details here, everyone seems to get an initial you got your domain only to find out a little while later that the names have already been assigned to someone else. Jeremy Shoemaker had the same problems over at Shoemoney and posted the responses.
GoDaddy is going to make a lot of money with this new domain roll out, but now that people are being rejected after being told otherwise, the loss of goodwill may have a much bigger longterm negative effect for the company.
Hope GoDaddy registered younolongerlike.me and dontblame.me, as they may need to use them to offset the bad publicity.

If you’re getting ready to go to Search Engine Strategies Toronto next week – or still on the fence about whether to attend SES Toronto June 16-18 – then check out the buzz from more than two dozen search blogs that has been leading up to the SEM conference.
If fact, the buzz in Canada has been louder this year than the one coming from the periodical cicadas that emerge every 17 years from underground haunts on Cape Cod. (Hey, I’m not making this up. Just read “Cape is again abuzz” from The Boston Globe.)
What Google calls “the buzzing blogger community” has been blogging about the speakers who will be speaking at Search Engine Strategies Toronto. I should know. I was among the first bloggers to start buzzing about “Why search engine marketers should attend SES Toronto 2008.”
But, I haven’t been alone.
More than two dozen other search blogs joined the chorus. Here’s a list of the posts about next week’s SEM conference that I was able to find today – and I’m sure that I’m missing more:

Is There A Need For More Search Conferences In Canada?
So, “the buzzing blogger community” has really been abuzz about the SEM conference that gets underway on Tuesday, June 17, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (South Bldg.), in Toronto, Canada. It’s not too late to register to find out what all this buzz is about for yourself.
