Avoid Extreme Makeovers During the Optimization Process

Whether you're optimizing a page for the first time or tweaking a page to improve your rankings, it can be tempting to give a page an extreme makeover. From title tags to keyword selection and density to link building, sometimes an SEO may feel the pull to change it all in the hopes of getting a quick return.
But making a bunch of changes all at once is not a prudent process. When multiple changes are made simultaneously, it's difficult to know what is contributing to any changes (declines or increases) in rankings.
Instead, try focusing on one change at at time. So what should your first change be? It can vary from keyword to keyword. Using SEO tools can help you perform competitive intelligence to figure out which metric is most likely to have the greatest impact for a given keyword, as well as analyze your site for strengths and weaknesses within those metrics.

basically if you track where you are, and then you make a change - track to see where you go - then you know the effect of each change.
Often times people change a whole lot - and then don’t know what change actually allowed them to move up.
i almost do makeover each time upgraded my wp versions but i dont know if there is an impact to the ranks of my blog
@Anox - measuring blog rank is tough. I say do what you think is best for your visitors the rest is just semanatic.

It isn’t talked about much but from my experience with optimizing websites it usually pays to put the extra effort into choosing your keywords in the beginning so that you don’t have to change much in the way of titles or URLs in the future. Search engines seem to favor stability and will give a page more weight if it is deemed stable and doesn’t frequently change (more specifically the titles, meta tags, and URLs - it’s favorable to regularly add new content)

First of all let me say that you have done an excellent job. For people who are new in SEO business this is actually one of the first lessons. This is actually a basic idea to try to see waht is the effect of a change in your site. But according to me if you are thinking to get a good Pr for the next update, doing the above will be a waste of time. just concentrate on keyword analysis and link building accordingly.

This is great advice! I always try small changes to my pages at any given time. This allows you to easily see what changes helped, which hurt, and which really did nothing. Plus if you are constantly doing this the search engines like the changing content, even if it is just a little.
Well said. Extreme makeovers and changes brings more harm than benefit. I have had many blogs since i started blogging and i can tell you i know the effects of extreme changes.
