Case Study: Unused Domains – What to Do What to Do

I spent about an hour on the phone yesterday with a person who works at the tech support department of Godaddy. I have most of my domains registered there and I was having a problem with some email going through.

After we discussed the reason I was calling – the person of course tried to upsell me some addons. This time he was talking to me about the Godaddy Discount Domain Club. Well I thought about it for a little bit and realized that it would be saving at least $2 per domain even at the bulk pricing and it came with several other things like free cash parking.

I asked him to go see if they have a coupon as godaddy almost always has coupons they can use if you call in. Mind you the staff there is not on comission, but it does look good when they are selling. So he came back with 10% off. I went to google and searched for Godaddy coupons – and came with one that was for $20 off $75 or more (CATALOG1 is that code). He typed it in and bingo I got my discount.

After I hung up the phone, I realized that I was sitting on about 40 domains that I wasn’t really using. Domains I had purchased for one reason or another. Mainly things for projects or for companies I was no longer promoting. So rather than let them go to waste or forward them to a random lead capture page, I decided I would try out the Godaddy cash parking system.

Below is the list of domains I decided to park as well as some of the keywords that i entered for this case study. I will post back periodically with any updates I come up with or tips and tricks. Some of these I set up as default, others I picked a new theme and typed in 4 keywords (yes you are only allowed 4). I designated a few of them as able to show adult links as well – just to experiment and see what happens. The following have been designated as allowed to show adult ads – i’m testing this to see if it pays more or less than the non adult ones. In a future update I will post the results and any changes that have been made.

I have so many unused domains and it makes me sad just thinking about it because i now realize just how much money i wasted on domains. And what makes it even worst is when i purchase a domain through Yahoo for 1 year, and they automatically renew. Yahoo “stole” so much of my money that way because sometimes i forget about the domain i purchased if it was a long time ago.

I use NameCheap. I used to have lots of unused domains. I had to sell them off because is difficult to manage many sites at once.

Is it paying well to you at the moment coz i have several domaons which are still in the development stage and I would like to monetize them during the period when they are not being used
