Covid 2019 affected all types of sports. In the first quarter of 2020, there were not many sporting activities for fear of contracting and spreading the coronavirus. But after months of no action, football resumed, with enhanced safety measures in force. Besides the mandatory Covid 19 test for all players and staff, fans were not allowed into stadiums up and down the country.
Although 2020 was not action-packed like previous years, there were some shocking results that probably wouldn’t have happened during normal times. Below are the top 4 shocking results of 2020, according to football predictions experts GoatGoals.
1. Marine AFC vs. Colchester United: 7th Nov 2020
2020 saw Marine A.F.C reach the FA Cup 3rd round for the second time in their history. In the third round, Marine AFC faced Tottenham Hotspur, following their win against League Two side Colchester United. Marine AFC play in the Northern Premier League, which is level 8 in the English league pyramid. This was 4 divisions below their opponents Colchester United, and Marine’s team were all part time players.
Marine AFC took an early lead during the game when Anthony Milley scored, but Harry Pell scored an equalizer in the 25th minute. Scoring a goal was an outstanding achievement against their Football League rivals, but Marine AFC did not stop there. They took Colchester to penalties, winning 5-3, which proved to be one of the biggest results in recent FA Cup history.
2. Aston Villa vs. Liverpool: 4th Oct 2020
Liverpool started the season resounding champions, having bagged the Premier League title for the 1st time in their club’s history. The Reds completed the 2019/2020 season with 99 points, having lost just 3 times. In October, they faced Aston Villa, who survived relegation from the league a few months back before this game.
Many football fans expected Aston Villa to put up a big fight against the champions, but nobody knew what was coming. Villa took an early lead with two goals thanks to Ollie Watkins, before being pegged back by a goal from Mo Salah. While most fans expected Liverpool to come through and win, they were shocked when Aston Villa stepped up gear and ran out 7-2 winners.
3. Hoffenheim vs Bayern Munich: 27th Sep 2020
Bayern Munich started the season after a triple win, beating Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, and PSG. Bayern had also won 8-0 against Schalke in their opening game of the season, extending their unbeaten record in the Bundesliga to twenty matches.
When teams play Bayern, they tend to have more hope than expectation. However, Hoffenheim shocked football fans worldwide with a 4-1 win against Bayern Munich at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena. This was the only Bayern’s league defeat in 2020.
4. Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Real Madrid: 21st Oct & 1st Dec 2020
In Shakhtar’s two group stage games against Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk became only the 4th team in the competition’s history to have won against Real Madrid twice in the group stage. They defeated the Spanish giants 3-2 in the first game, before cementing their dominance when the teams met again in December with a 2-0 victory.
